In the late 1960s, there were few better places to enjoy a night out in Glasgow than the Barrowland Ballroom. At weekends, as many as 2000 would cram into the venue to dance away the night. Among them, was one of the UK's most notorious mysoginistic murderers, whose true identity remains to this day, Unexplained. This episode was written by Emma Dibdin and Richard MacLean Smith. In this episode, Laura interviews award winning writer and reporter Audrey Gillan about her remarkable BBC Scotland podcast, Bible John: Creation of a Serial Killer. If you haven't listened to this 10-part series, you really should. In the 1960's Patricia Docker, Jemima MacDonald and Helen Puttock were brutally murdered in Glasgow. You may not be familiar with these names or the women, but it's a case that has haunted Audrey all her life and it's an important case for Laura too. Both Audrey and Laura explain why in this episode. Patricia, Jemima and Helen were strangled and killed after a night out dancing at the Barrowland Ballroom which was located in a mercantile area east of Glasgow's city centre . Their bodies were discovered just a short distance from their homes. All three women were young mothers of small children. Laura highlights seven problematic myths regarding the case, which she believes are significant obstructions to solving the murders. Audrey shares what she discovered in the police reports which shocked her and made her question absolutely everything about the case and the original investigation. You won't want to miss this. Listen to Bible John: Creation of a Serial Killer before you dive into Laura's illuminating interview with Audrey. Listener discretion is advised. On the 30th of October 1969, Helen Puttock headed out to the Barrowland Ballroom with her sister Jeannie. The pair loved dancing and while Helen's husband George could look after their two sons, the sisters made the most of a night out together. Jeannie travelled back with her sister in a taxi along with another man they had met while they were out. She got out of the taxi and Helen went on to her house. She never arrived. Her body was found in a back yard close to her home. She had been murdered. The Barrowland Ballroom connected all of these murders and so a huge investigation was launched. When Jeannie told them that the man they had met that night was called John and he quoted the bible, a new name for the suspect was born. On the 16th of August 1969, Jemima McDonald was on the way for a night out at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow, Scotland. Her sister Margaret usually went with her but that night she stayed at home and watched Jemima's children. Jemima didn't return to collect them and Margaret got worried. She would eventually find Jemima's body amongst debris and rubbish in an abandoned building. Glasgow Police now had two murders on their hands and they both revolved around the Barrowland Ballroom. In the late 1960s, a Glasgow Ballroom became the hunting ground for a suspected serial killer. Three women were killed within less than two years. All had been at the Barrowland Ballroom the night before their murders, all were killed in the same manner, and strangely, all three women were on their periods when they were murdered. Police began to hunt for a man they dubbed "Bible John" - and while plenty of suspects came about, even now, over 50 years later, Bible John has still not been found. Follow us! Bible John is an unidentified serial killer who is believed to have murdered three young women between 1968 and 1969 in Glasgow, Scotland. Bible John's victims were all young brunette women between the ages of 25 and 32, all of whom had met their murderer at the Barrowland Ballroom: a dance hall and music venue in the city. The perpetrator has never been identified and the case remains both unsolved and one of the most extensive manhunts in Scottish criminal history.https://twitter.com/ccunsolvedhttps://www.facebook.com/ccunsolvedhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmBf4jlussK3ga5vS5YRYFg
The Braw and The Brave is a podcast about people and their passions. In Episode 38 I chat with massive music fan Gareth Fraser. Attending his first ever concert in his teens, he has since clocked up over 1200 gigs, establishing the independent live music and album review site Musicscramble. What Gareth doesn't know about Glasgow's music scene ain't worth knowing and being quite the connoisseur of his beloved Barrowlands, he helped collate and verify the gig history for a book being published on this iconic venue. Gareth takes us on a back stage tour of the Barrowlands and gives us insight in to not only the soundtrack of his life so far but also the bands, the fans and venue that everyone wants to headline! Between 1968 and 1969, three women left the Barrowland Ballroom after a night of dancing. The all left with men of similar descriptions and they all were found dead close to their homes soon afterwards. All were brunette, all were mothers, all were menstruating at the time of their deaths, and all were strangled. The 3 killings were linked and the killer became known as Bible John. www.truecrimescotland.com (http://www.truecrimescotland.com/) for full details. Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom was meant to be a place for people to dance and enjoy themselves. Instead, Bible John, one of Scotland’s most infamous serial killers, used the dance hall as a hunting ground. Vanessa and Greg investigate the motives of this mysterious murderer who may have used the Bible as justification to target menstruating woman.
In February of 1968, 25-year old Patricia Docker visited the Barrowland Ballroom on a Thursday evening, leaving her son in the care of her parents. She was estranged from her husband but still legally married, so she didn't tell anyone her apparent destination, for fear of judgment. You see, Thursday nights at the Barrowland Ballroom came with a reputation. Some of the Thursday patrons were adulterers, looking for a night of fun away from the stresses of everyday life. One killer used this reputation to his advantage. In addition to Docker, this killer also claimed the lives of two more women: 32-year old Jemima McDonald in August of 1969, and 29-year old Helen Puttock just two months later in the latter days of October.Despite unique details about the suspect being released to the public, as well as one of the most intricate sketches in Scottish history, the identity of the figure named "Bible John" has remained a mystery for the ages.
