Jonathan Buford is the CEO and founder of Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company. He grew up in Ohio and moved to Arizona in 2002, when he drove his rusted-out 1988 Chevy Nova out West to explore the vast Arizona landscapes. He launched his first business, a window cleaning company, out of his garage in 2006. In 2010, while backpacking through the Arizona wilderness, Jonathan was inspired to take his interest in craft brewing to the next level to start his own brewpub. He orchestrated a successful Kickstarter campaign to obtain the necessary capital and opened the Arizona Wilderness Brewpub in Gilbert, Arizona, in 2013 as the very first brewery in Gilbert. Starting with just nine employees, Arizona Wilderness found quick success, growing rapidly and securing rave reviews from the likes of Esquire Magazine, The Phoenix New Times, Phoenix Magazine, Draft, Beer Advocate, and Sunset. Arizona Wilderness was even named “The Best New Brewery in the World” in 2013 by Ratebeer.com. Today, Arizona Wilderness has more than 160 employees and operates the original Gilbert brewpub, a European-inspired beer garden in downtown Phoenix, and a warehouse production and barrel-aging facility. Arizona Wilderness continues to celebrate hand-crafted, artisanal beers that are inspired by the beautiful and diverse state of Arizona and is consistently rated the best brewery in Arizona and among the top 100 breweries worldwide (out of nearly 20,000 total breweries). Arizona Wilderness also receives regular acclaim for its food, including being recently named one of the top 100 restaurants in Phoenix by AZcentral.com. In addition to providing world-class food and drink, Jonathan and his business partner, Patrick Ware, use their passion for the wilderness to continually drive improvements in Arizona Wilderness' impact on its community. Jonathan and Patrick have driven initiatives to: (1) save huge amounts of water from the Verde River (more than 320 million gallons) by transitioning the brewery's base malt to Sinagua Malt (which replaces heavy water use crops such as corn and alfalfa with barley in the Verde River Valley); (2) drastically reduce landfill usage by utilizing recyclable and compostable materials wherever possible; and (3) support local farmers and vendors by consistently seeking out local partners for all menu items, including exclusively offering 100% Arizona grass-raised and finished beef at the beer garden. Jonathan is also pursuing a career in capturing Arizona landscape photography. He embarked on a project documenting all 90 Arizona Wilderness areas which will be published by Arizona Highways Magazine. He also frequently contributes to the magazine. In the future, Jonathan looks forward to continuing to grow Arizona Wilderness to ensure a tangible, long-term, positive effect on Arizona. ---------- Guiding Growth: Conversations with Community Leaders Join our hosts, Sarah Watts and Ben Kalkman, as we explore the human journey of leaders - their stories of humility, triumph, roadblocks, and lessons learned - as they reflect on how they became who they are today and share stories of inspiration and hope with listeners. When Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company was named "Best New Brewery in The World" in 2014 by RateBeer.com many would have assumed that this would be the best thing that could ever happen. But it almost broke them. ALMOST. They fought tooth-and-nail the whole way and now coming up on their 7th anniversary the Gilbert-based brewery is in a new phase of growth. The roller coast that was their formidable years has forged the AZW team into a group determined to leave their imprint on Arizona by minimizing the impact we all make on our beautiful state. Oh yeah, they make amazing beer and delicious food too!
Here at Step Brewers we have a massive appreciation for those brewers in Australia paving the way in mixed culture, wild and dare we use the term, sour beers. We wanted to dedicate a series of episodes to those brewers and also partner with the best in the game. Dollar Bill won our hearts in 2019 and won the Steppie Award for Best New Brewery. Ed and Fiona join us to talk mixed culture, their inspirations and what they are looking forward to releasing over the next few years. Wild Leap Brew Co. keeps jumping with new beers and distilled spirits Wild Leap Brew Co. has been making waves with a huge showing in our Best of Georgia Beer awards and being named Best New Brewery by USA Today. They've earned their honors with a constant stream of tasty beers like the Truck Chaser series of ice cream truck-inspired brews and their DIPA Alpha Abstraction series feature the same base beer but with new hops in each release, currently on Volume 11. We sat down this week at the BGR Studios with the Wild Leap crew to talk beer. Chris Elliott, Chief Brewing Officer; Rob Goldstein, Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Office; and Doug Sayler, Lead Brewer all made the trip to hang out and chat over a few brews. We talk about having fun with experimental ingredients and the challenge of planning around those ingredients, their cool Three Harvest collaboration with Extreme Hops AL, an IPA utilizing hydroponically grown hops, and what that could mean for hop farming in the future. We press Goldstein on the possibility of a taproom in Atlanta and what we're going to see in Alpha Abstraction Vol. 12. In addition to brewing up beer after beer, Wild Leap has also ventured into distilled spirits. They currently offer a vodka for cocktails at the taproom and in retail 750s. Elliott tells us they're experimenting with distilling at the brewery/distillery now to see what's next. A distilled IPA, maybe? Hanging with the cool kids from Wild Leap! Hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend! We have another great episode of the Happy Half Hour for you. This week, we’re recording from our sponsor, Sycuan Casino, which recently underwent a huge renovation, and are taping at their new restaurant, Bull & Bourbon Steakhouse. We talked with Marcel, Bull & Bourbon’s sous chef, about the restaurant’s in-house dry-aging program and a special tomahawk steak that is aged for 120 days. Our special guest this week is Arturo Kassel. He's the CEO of Whisknladle Hospitality, which brought us restaurants like PrepKitchen, Catania and of course, Whisknladle in La Jolla. In 2017, Arturo sold the company's Prepkitchen locations so he could focus on his next big project, Gravity Heights, a brewery in Sorrento Valley that just opened in January of this year. Gravity Heights was just named the all-around winner of Best New Brewery in our annual Best Restaurants list—this means that both Troy and our readers agreed that Gravity Heights deserved the title. Arturo is also working on another project in Sorrento Valley, a 10,000-square-foot food hall called Park Commons. His pick for Two People, $50, was The Fishery. Troy liked Cross Street Chicken and Beer, and Lauren’s pick was Morning Glory (which Troy reviews in our upcoming August issue!) In Hot Plates, we talked about Troy getting the First Look at Ciccia Osteria, Mario Cassineri’s new Italian restaurant in Barrio Logan, Puesto taking over Gordon Biersch’s location in Mission Valley and starting their own brewery, and Home & Away, a two-story cocktail and beer bar, opening in Encinitas. This week’s Hot Topic: soon, you’ll be able to order food from McDonald’s, and even a burger from Juniper & Ivy, and have it delivered by drone. San Diego is one of ten cities in the country where the tech giant partnered with McDonald’s to test out drone delivery. We got an email from a listener who needed a recommendation for good Mexican pastries and desserts—listen to find out what Troy and Arturo had to say.
Caroline and Ashley sat down with Brittany Goldstein (@bgoldstein59), Anna Watts (@annacaro), Tori Paquin (@toripaquin), and, a little later, co-founder Rob Goldstein (@rgoldstein45) of Wild Leap Brew Co. (@wildleap) We talk all things La Grange, reality TV, and what it's like to be the Best New Brewery in the nation. Make sure you stick around til the end because Rob makes an exclusive announcement you won't wanna miss! Jonathan Buford co-founded Arizona Wilderness Brewery without a brewing background and turned it into the #1 rated new brewery in the world in 2013. Listen to this episode to learn how they did it and last year generated $5.5M in revenue. Visit https://www.leadquizzes.com/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: [01:24] How Jonathan transitioned from a window cleaning business into the brewery business [06:02] How he learned how to brew beer and got things started [10:07] How they marketed the business and raised the money they needed in a short amount of time [11:50] How they signed a lease and started construction for the brewery [15:31] Why they had to delay their opening for quite some time [18:54] How they developed this incredible quality product [23:07] How they leveraged getting awarded Best New Brewery in the World to create a buzz [25:09] Jonathan’s marketing strategy advice [29:04] What worked and what didn’t work for them when it came to hiring people [39:00] What had the biggest impact on their growth Key Takeaways: You risk so much by not knowing what construction timelines are and the true cost of things. If you have a ‘hype person’, you should also match them with a ‘logic person’. If you put all your money in the quality of your product, one thing that’s going to have to become cheaper is either labor or marketing. As long as you’re doing business ethically and you’re including everybody in the community and you’re not discriminating against anything and you have a story that’s exciting, you can save a lot of money in marketing because you’ll have people telling your story for you at high rates. When you sign a contract with somebody, there is no law that can get you out of that contract until a judge gets you out of that contract, and you don’t want to go to a judge or an arbitrator. So what happens is that contract that you have with that person is just a negotiation point. There is a soul to a business and there does need to be an ownership team and an executive team that all really love each other. Action Steps: Keep your day job when you’re building a company unless you know what you’re doing. And you’ll know you know what you’re doing when you have money in your bank account. Be exciting enough to have other people tell your story for you. Jonathan said: “Always set yourself up that other people do the marketing for you, so be exciting, be bold, tread it heavily. Don’t tread lightly. Be loud about what you’re doing and tell the story…” “Sometimes the only way to win a battle is if you both win. And that’s a complicated topic but just know that when you’re going into business, you have to have a partner…” More from Jonathan Buford and Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.: Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.’s Instagram (@azwilderness) Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.’s Twitter (@AZWildernessCo) Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.’s Facebook Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.'s Website Jonathan’s Instagram (@thewildernesshumans) Sponsor link 14-day Free Trial to LeadQuizzes Thank you for listening!
