Well y'all, this is it. The series finale of Bourbon & Bordelons because we've reached the series finale of Queen Sugar, the television show that stole our hearts and minds and showed Blackness in an entirely unique and interesting light. New, original storytelling. The crew of Janay, Chaunece, Jibri and Corey break down the series finale episode "For They Existed" and take flight with the whole crew: Nova, Ralph Angel and even Charley, along with Aunt Vi, Hollywood, Prosper, Darla, Micah and Blue. We spend a few more minutes with them as they take flight into their own world from here on out. The crew drops some Advictions and as is customary, a shot of bourbon for the character who had the best SHOW, yep, for the ENTIRE series. Who might that be? You'll have to check it out. Thank you for listening each week and for sharing your thoughts and opinions with us via social media and emails, etc. It was all appreciated. “It ain't ova, b*tch.” But Donny's career in podcasting is, as he will ultimately be cancelled for his accent work and acting choices during this “Save the Last Dance” recap with Kendrick Tucker of “Reality and Comics Too” podcast. The dark (in more ways than one) opening makes Chelsea realize why she left sleepovers early, and her passion for Julia Stiles' pullout couch makes Donny realize he doesn't want to sleepover at her house anymore. Then, Chelsea reminisces about her time at the Thirsty Turtle while Donny reminisces about his time in the special gym class. Also, the Cuties send in their best stories of times they put their foot in their mouth. But mostly, the three just praise Bianca Lawson and Kerry Washington for an hour. This week we are diving into the noughties dance classic, Save The Last Dance (2001), directed by Thomas Carter. The film stars Julia Stiles, Sean Patrick Thomas, Kerry Washington and Bianca Lawson. We chat about the songs in the film with music veteran, Mitchell Leib, who produced the soundtrack. The film follows Sara, who moves to Chicago to live with her father after the sudden death of her mother. One of the few white people at her new school, Sara forms a relationship with Derek, a black teen from the South Side, where they bond over dance. With 21 years of hindsight, we look back at some of the problematic areas of the story, and talk in depth with Mitchell about the production of a music soundtrack that holds its weight for over two decades.Save The Last Dance is available to watch on Netflix UK.Next week, we will be looking at Censor (2021), directed by Prano Bailey-Bond. Censor is currently streaming on Mubi and Amazon UK.Transcript available here. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Prep your dogg jokes and don't go into the derelict old house because we're checking out Ernest R Dickerson's 2001 blaxploitation / slasher / Italian Gothic horror film Bones. Joining us is Carolyn Mauricette, Development Coordinator & Programmer of the Blood In The Snow film festival, who has a deep affection for both Pam Grier and Snoop Dogg. This episode is, first and foremost, an apology for sleeping on the film, which is a ton of fun. We heap praise on Dickerson's direction, the film's litany of homages and its many visually stunning sequences. Bones has characters we actually care about, doesn't make a big deal about a mixed race relationship and invests a ton of screen time on Snoop & Grier's romance that other films would have cut out.Plus: the agelessness of Grier and Bianca Lawson, undead decapitated heads, the film's questionable marketing, the lack of studio confidence in black horror and, finally, Carolyn's hilarious edible story.Questions? Live your dream, it’s not as hard as it may seem, you gotta work to get the cream! This week’s movie is a somber and heartwarming tale of Sara Johnson's (Julia Stiles) ambitions to become a ballerina while living on the “bad” side of Chicago with her deadbeat dad after losing her mother in a tragic car accident. It is the origin of the greatest comeback aka “Steps ain’t no square dance” / “That’s okay, I’ll dance circles...probably around you”...even if Sara Johnson definitely does NOT dance in circles around ANYONE that night. It feels like we say this every time, but this SOUNDTRACK THO. “Murder She Wrote,” K-Ci & JoJo, Method Man and Redman...not to mention the somber violin score that complements the extremely Real drama that unfolds. Shoutout to Kerry Washington’s free lesson on the Black community and Sean Patrick Thomas dropping some knowledge on the meaning of In Cold Blood. We may not LOVE this movie but we did find a way to discuss it at LENGTH due to a handful of entertaining tangents, so tune in! Starring Julia Child-I mean, Julia Stiles, Sean Patrick Thomas, Kerry Washington, and Bianca Lawson.
Dawson, Joey, Jack, and Andie all go to Cambridge, MA, to an unnamed university (hmm...wonder which one), where they get their first taste of college life. Dawson gets knocked down a peg or two when his movie bombs at a film festival, but we are introduced to Bianca Lawson's character Nikki Green, and we are not mad about it. Joey gets put in a room with a real dick named A.J. and we are definitely mad about it. Jack tries to discover the gay scene in Boston but goes to a place that really isn't for him. Trying to find stuff in the early-internet times was really hard. And Andie has a chance encounter with a career secretary named Fran that we love, but also, why can't Andie find some people her age? Put on your life preservers and remember to ask permission before boarding. We're in for a wild ride! We hope everyone is staying safe, healthy, and sane. Hope we help you get through this week. We're back from a little summer hiatus and had a LOT of catching up to do! We break down what we've been doing over the break and help Mel understand what a "Hot Girl Summer" is. We briefly talk new music; dabble in this Popeye's chicken sandwich debate; shout out "The Six" and our friends north of the border in general; and MiMi confuses a health trend for Flinstones lingerie (just go with it). Most importantly, we touch on what everyone's been watching; “Black Lady Sketch Show”, “The Boys”, “Stranger Things Season 3”, “Mindhunter”, “Euphoria” (Give Zendaya ALL HER THINGS), "Big Little Lies Season 3", "Years and Years", “Queen Sugar” (the show we all should be watching but aren’t), and what strain of virgin blood Angela Bassett, Bianca Lawson and Paul Rudd are bathing in to keep their youthful looks. We also do a couple 90s throwback show references that solidifies our place in "middle-age-dom". Please visit us at @4layeredtakes and don’t forget to subscribe, rate and review us on iTunes, Google Play and now Spotify!
Happy Juneteenth! It’s Wednesday and Bianca Lawson is here!
Now dig this, Snoop got to make his very own Blaxploitation film that is also horror film. Don't worry, it's a 2000's horror movie. Snoop got to have Pam Grier as his old lady. Everyone has a life checklist, don't judge. We talk about Snoop, 90s actors, Bianca Lawson, bad horror movies and maggots!
Get ya head in the game, because this week Emma and Danica re-watched High School Musical! Join us as we talk about PAX, flip phones, generic mascots, and LOL moments. Maybe don't listen to this one if you're a HSM fan, because we dunk on it pretty hard. Get it? DUNK on it. Like in basketball. Because Troy plays basketball. Ha ha.
In this episode of Fire Bad, Tree Pretty, Amanda and Lydia discuss S02E10 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "What's My Line? Part 1." Points of interest: Mister Pfister, door to door dildo salesman, sex boats, debasing the beef canoe, quality time with Mr. Gordo, Angel is feeling insecure, vampires on ice, Big Hockey's bloody secret, career fair feels, Dalton and Giles' buddy cop movie, the amazing and confusing Mr. Cross, and Willow and Oz finally meet!
Fan favorite Alexander Lester returns to our modest little graveyard to join the magical mystery flashback tour that is Angelus’ sordid history in 221, “Becoming (Part 1)” and rejoice at the very first Buffy/Spike team-up in 222, “Becoming (Part 2).” Is David Boreanaz’s Irish accent more or less abysmal than Bianca Lawson’s whatever-it-is accent? Mr. Pointy makes his inauspicious-but-important debut in the series; Spike likes Happy Meals; Joyce finally gets a clue; and Buffy shares her sword. Next: after the feel good cabaret that was the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Two finale I’m taking an oh-so-brief hiatus to catch my breath before diving into Season Three. But in the meantime I’ll be attending the 8th Biennial Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses. I will personally be participating in at least one roundtable panel discussion while there, which I intend to record. I’m also hoping to capture some other content as well, such as interviews and perhaps other panels or presentations. We’ll see how that all works out, but in any case look for a “Very Special Conversations” episode at some point in the near future. THE BREAKDOWN Intro / Guest (00:00 - 03:51) Main Topic (03:51 - 1:40:16) Outro / Next (1:40:16 - 1:45:26) THE LINKS Library Closed For Filing - Please Come Back Tomorrow THE MUSIC “Conversations (feat. They put out Slayage: The Journal of Whedon Studies, and Watcher Junior: The Undergraduate Journal of Whedon Studies, both blind peer-reviewed twice-yearly online publications. They also host the biennial Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses, which brings all these incredible scholars together to present papers, discuss ways of incorporating Whedon Studies in education, and basically just geek out together. http://www.whedonstudies.tv/
The wonder twins are full, happy, and filled of love after Thanksgiving and they want to spread the wealth! They got a fun joyous episode for ya'll this week... but first! MORE OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!111!!1!Money here, and I want a spinoff show just about Kendra the vampire slayer. She adds some much needed diversity to the show, as well as depth of character and nuance.Plot summary is as follows:Spike decides its high time to bring Drusilla back to full strength. Much digging into old books (especially the one pilfered from Giles) to find an answer, though Drusilla seems to be pretty damn good with the Tarot readings as far as answers.Three assassins are summoned- the biker, the worm, and the ginger. But none of that really matters because Bianca Lawson is on the scene, chewing the hell out of the scenery and fucking shit up.The first two-parter since the premiere, and it's welcome. The show spends too much time trying to encapsulate its storylines into forty-minute chunks, and when it gives itself some more breathing room, it really shines.Let's get some more of this.
