Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2025 69:14

Your Stupid Minds sifts through some of Chris's $4 DVD acquisitions from Half Price Books and these things called "video stores" where our ancient ancestors used to purchase their entertainment wares. We start with the 1995 sci-fi direct-to-video low budget epic Galaxis (or Terminal Force), which some critic (we'll never know who) described as "Star Wars meets The Terminator." Starring Brigitte Nielsen, Richard Moll, Fred Asparagus (lol), Alan Fudge (lol), Sam Raimi for some reason, and professional Diablo III gold farmer Arthur Mesa. In a far off space battle that is in no way like the opening of Star Wars, Lord Tarkin (Craig Fairbrass) battles it out with evil space wizard Kyla (Moll). When Tarkin is betrayed by his sniveling wiener underling (Raimi) Kyla steals their magic crystal (which may be called Galaxis, the title is never mentioned nor explained) that gives them power or something. Ladera (Nielsen) comes upon Tarkin, who reveals to her that there is a second crystal, which she can use to defend the Sintarian people, or Kyla could use to destroy the universe or something. Unfortunately, the crystal is on Earth. Doubly unfortunately, it's now in Los Angeles (but good for the filmmakers, who already happened to be there). The film switches abruptly from a Star Wars ripoff to a Terminator ripoff, when Ladera teams up with a rogue-like drunk named Jed Sanders (John H. Brennan). They do some Terminator stuff and Kyla shoots them with force lightening. Meanwhile corpulent gangster Victor (Asparagus) chases after Jed with various Wile E. Coyote instruments of death, and two hapless detectives (Roger Aaron Brown and Cindy Morgan) traipse around 90s LA sighing and shaking their heads at all the violence.

Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. Are you ready for some recommendations? This week, I am focusing on films that are perfect for anyone looking for some Dungeons & Dragons inspiration. I have got four fantastic picks: "Hawk the Slayer" (1980), "Dragonslayer" (1981), "The Sword and the Sorcerer" (1982), and "The Dungeonmaster" (1984).First up is "Hawk the Slayer." This 1980 fantasy film directed by Terry Marcel is a great watch for those who enjoy classic sword and sorcery adventures. The story follows Hawk, played by John Terry, on his quest to defeat the evil Voltan, portrayed by Jack Palance. The film stands out for its creative use of special effects, particularly for its time. It's a cult favorite and a prime example of low-budget fantasy done right. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support our work.Next, we have "Dragonslayer" from 1981. Directed by Matthew Robbins, this movie features groundbreaking special effects that earned it an Academy Award nomination. The story revolves around a young sorcerer's apprentice, played by Peter MacNicol, who sets out to slay a dragon. The dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative, remains one of the most impressive and realistic dragons ever put to film. The combination of practical effects and CGI was ahead of its time, and it's one of my favorite fantasy movies."The Sword and the Sorcerer," released in 1982 and directed by Albert Pyun, is another gem. Lee Horsley stars as Talon, a mercenary with an AMAZING three-bladed sword on a mission to rescue a princess and reclaim his kingdom. This film has some action-packed sequences and impressive low-budget practical effects. Lastly, we have "The Dungeonmaster" from 1984. Directed by several directors, including Charles Band and Dave Allen, this anthology-style film follows Paul, a computer programmer who must face various challenges set by the evil Mestema, played by Richard Moll. The film's blend of fantasy and sci-fi elements makes it unique. Each segment of Paul's journey showcases different styles and imaginative scenarios that keeps it fresh. These four films offer a great mix of fantasy adventure, imaginative storytelling, and unique special effects. They're perfect for anyone looking to get inspired for their next Dungeons & Dragons campaign. So, grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy these classic fantasy films. Then go roll some dice.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. In this exciting episode of Open Collar, we covered a wide range of topics. Here's a peek at what we discussed: We opened with Cory nursing a cold, losing his voice in the process, while Steve was still coping with the Astros' loss in the baseball playoffs. "Open Collar Headlines" paid tribute to some iconic figures. We remembered Richard Roundtree and his legendary role as Shaft. We also remembered Richard Moll and his contributions to "Night Court" and his portrayal of Two-Face in "Batman: The Animated Series." Plus, we discussed the sudden passing of Matthew Perry, his legacy on "Friends," and his personal struggles with alcohol and drugs. As Shocktober came to a close, we had a Halloween Hodgepodge! We reminisced about what used to scare us as kids, our favorite costumes, traditions, and the best Halloween candies. In the world of Geek News, we delved into Marvel's plans for "Thor 5" with a new director, "The Marvels" tracking to have an underwhelming box office opening, the revelation that David Fincher almost directed Spider-Man, and shared our thoughts on Season 2 of "Loki." And finally, we wrapped up the show with a Halloween-themed edition of "Florida Man: True or False." Spooky surprises galore!
