"Juice" is a good film. It could have been greater if Tupac's character "Bishop" wasn't written to be so James Cagney and it's funny that the film ended in the fashion of "White Heat" but it's because of that film Tupac decided to go deep into the psyche of a man with practically nothing to lose at a young age growing up in early '90s New York. Harlem to be more exact. The film is about senior high schoolers trying to figure themselves out and it's root is basically the time and location they're living in. It's tough in the streets and if you want to make it, you might have to consider extreme measures. The film is not all violence, we are shown a window of Hip Hop which plays a deep role in the film. It's a character, it highlights a side of New York. You not only hear it, you see it in the fashion that is shown (great production design) & the music where society decides to vibe, and you also feel it as to how Bishop, Raheem, and Steel try to feign it as much as they can. But we all know, it shows us how music can be not only a way out, but it also has the power to fufill artistic purpose. I didn't mentioned this in the review, but Ernest Dickerson knows how to make a film and an effective one with his choice of shots that he knows it adds the right amount of tension and aloofness. Overall, what I saw is still ingredients for an iconic film such as "Juice".Three out of four tokes.#juicemovie #tupac #hiphop
Writer, editor and podcaster Edward Ongweso Jr. returns to the show to kick off Denzember, a monthlong celebration of our greatest living actor, with a conversation about Spike Lee's seminal 1992 biopic 'Malcolm X'. It stands as one of Lee's most triumphant achievements and one of Denzel Washington's very best performances as one of the most significant figures of 20th century America. We discuss the film's trouble gestation period, taking nearly 30 years to get to the big screen then courting controversy throughout its production. We also discuss the film's portrait of Malcolm X and offer our readings of Spike's ultimate intention - presenting a fractured portrait that embraces the many sides of the man and the many ideologies and sects that claim him. Finally, we talk about the film's noteworthy detractors, including social critic and theorist bell hooks, who makes a compelling case that the film ultimately fails to bring a meaningful portrait of Malcolm to the big screen.Read bell hooks's review of Spike Lee's 'Malcolm X' at Artforum.Edward's Top 5 Denzel Performances:1. Director and cinematographer Ernest Dickerson (BOSCH, JUICE, MALCOLM X) joins us in conversation on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. Having been exposed to photography as a young man by his uncle, Ernest first keyed into cinematography after watching David Lean's OLIVER TWIST and later attended graduate film school at NYU. Ernest reflects on his professional relationship with Spike Lee and reveals how Spike generously delayed pre-production on MALCOM X to allow Ernest enough time to finish post on his directorial debut, JUICE. Finding himself frequently directing his directors, Ernest also shares how he saw his transition into directing as a natural progression of his career. We later discuss the value of doing your homework when brought on to direct television and the different professional expectations that are unique to the medium. At the end, we consider how creation is a patient search and the importance, joys, and benefits of studying film history.

This week the kids discuss the 1997 Japanese classic, Cure, by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. But first! They discuss L.A. finance, Jane Fonda, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, Ernest Dickerson, Billy Zane, William Sadler, the weird career of Dennis Miller, Disclosure, The Net, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Columbo, Robert Culp, Straw Dogs, Video Archives, The Loved One, and more. From Wiki: “Cure (キュア, Kyua) is a 1997 Japanese psychological thriller film written and directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, starring Kōji Yakusho, Masato Hagiwara, Tsuyoshi Ujiki and Anna Nakagawa. The story follows a detective investigating a string of gruesome murders where an X is carved into the neck of each victim, and the murderer is found near the victim of each case and remembers nothing of the crime. It is considered a progenitor of the explosion of Japanese horror media in the late 1990s and early 2000s, preceding other releases like Hideo Nakata's Ring and Takashi Shimizu's Ju-On: The Grudge.[1]” NEXT WEEK: Pearl Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.com Drusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/ Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/ Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/ Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/ Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/ Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel
Part 2: Bordello of Blood came to be. Another movie was supposed to be made in it's place but the machinations of Hollywood turned and suddenly everything changed. They had a script called Fat Tuesday, a psychological thriller which was changed to Dead Easy. Gil had no interest in directing Demon Knight, so Ernest Dickerson was brought in. And Gil planned to direct Dead Easy afterward, set in Louisiana and got the green light from Universal and while scouting locations for weeks, the plug was pulled and it was decided that Bordello of Blood would be done in it's place. Then Steven Spielberg started Dreamworks and because of fear of losing Robert Zemeckis, the studio made a deal, which included buying a student script that Zemekis actually cowrote, for a ton of money and they ended up using that script that turned out to be Bordello of Blood. They had 3 weeks to rewrite and start shooting. With the making of this movie, they became pawns to everything. And not in Louisiana but in Canada. And instead of Bridget Wilson they got Erika Eliniak as the female lead. Al and Gil they wanted Robin Givens as the villain but, the boss, Joel Silver, cast, then Sylvester Stallone's soon to be ex fiancée, Angie Everhart instead. A part written for Daniel Baldwin was replaced with Dennis Miller by Joel, who improved all of his lines and didn't even want to be in the movie. But he got a million bucks to do it. Bordello was doomed from the very beginning. They were thwarted until the bitter end and by then, Al and Gil's friendship and business partnership was over. If you've seen Do the Right Thing, Malcom X, or Juice – the cult classic from 1992 that catapulted rapper Tupac Shakur into movie stardom – then you know Ernest Dickerson's work. Dickerson is a cinematographer-turned-director who's known best for his many collaborations with Spike Lee, and his roster of gripping thrillers. Host Kelley Carter talks with Dickerson about his love of the horror genre (he's loved it since the age of four !!), the ways horror films of the 50s and 60s influenced his work, and the process of making Juice and his new thriller DMZ. Then, Vanity Fair's Anthony Breznican and The Curvy Film Critic Carla Renata join Kelley to talk about the rapper-to-actor transition, the power of the underdog at the Oscars, and their bets for Sunday's Oscars show.

Masters of Horror? More like... not Masters of Horror, am I right? This episode asks the question... "Is she really eating pizza with a fork and knife right now?" Of course, each episode this month is accompanied by Josh from "For Nerds By Nerds," and Chris from "The Geek Peak." "The V Word," was written by Mick Garris (creator of Masters of Horror and writer of "Hocus Pocus.") and directed by Ernest Dickerson, who is best known for, "Do the Right Thing," "Bones (Snoop Dogg)," "The Walking Dead," and "Dexter." A promise is made at the end of this episode. A promise that will change the course for our boys forever. This promise may even determine the fate of ALL HUMANITY!

We discuss 5 of his performances: his debut, the influential hip hop classic Belly (1998), his trilogy of dumb studio action films by the overqualified cinematographer turned director Andrzej Bartkowiak - Romeo Must Die (2000), Exit Wounds (2001) and Cradle 2 The Grave (2003), and his most ambitious film, Ernest Dickerson's misunderstood crime drama Never Die Alone (2004). DMX discovered the source material by the Black pulp fiction novelist Donald Goines when he was in prison and used his clout in Hollywood to get it made as a movie: a disturbing and often grimly effective potboiler about how a sociopath's mind operates. We also discuss our shared neighbourhood of Bloordale: a magical land of bodegas, ice cream shops and numerous weed dispensaries.
