"I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way." Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Bob Hoskins, Charles Fleischer, Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Cassidy, Kathleen Turner and Mel Blanc Next Time: Deception 1946
An L.A. private eye investigating the murder of a local businessman uncovers a corrupt world of sex, money, and violence. Also, every major American cartoon character from the 20th century shows up at some point. Heavily influenced by films like Chinatown and The Big Sleep and featuring special effects that fully realize the potential of earlier films like Anchors Away and Mary Poppins that mix live acting and animation, this might be the greatest film of the 1980s. (This episode is a little bit of a cheat--we've both seen this film many, many times, but we needed a fill-in episode, and as this was playing in a theater near us this summer, we jumped at the chance to cover it.) Starring Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloydd, Charles Fleischer, Kathleen Turner, Joanna Cassidy, and Stubby Kaye. Directed by Robet Zemeckis. Written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman.
Tom and Julie rank James Bonds in terms of niceness, plan the Double Threat Party Album, and plumb the depths of Charles Fleischer's social media. Plus Andrew Tate's Crib and Steven Seagal's guitar solo. Also Dave's Not Here, Cosmic Cow, 10,000 Maniacs, Gerard Butler, what is Target good for, Barnes & Noble Starbucks and airport McDonald's, Cakes on a Plane, nautical indie bands, Aquaman's favorite song, hipster parents, Grateful Dead logos, and what Tom and Julie and Brett were like in high school. This week, we're heading down to the basement with no regard for our own well-being as an impromptu theme emerges from our weeks-long run of perfect pictures and Masterpiece Month continues with 2007's Zodiac, directed by David Fincher, written by James Vanderbilt, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Edwards, Chloë Sevigny, Elias Koteas, John Carroll Lynch, Brian Cox, Philip Baker Hall, Dermot Mulroney, Donal Logue and Charles Fleischer. It's very much a movie about obsession, the irresistable pull of a puzzle, and has a compelling case as Fincher's best movie. Watching it now, it's almost an ill omen for the cultural obsession with true crime content and podcasts in the years since, but this one manages to explore its gruesome crimes in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous or exploitative -- a tough needle to thread. If you'd like to watch Zodiac before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Paramount+. Other works discussed on this episode include Knives Out, Glass Onion, Mank, Citizen Kane, The Killer, Spy, The Heat, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Identity Thief, A Simple Favor, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Accountant, Twilight, Saint Maud, Ren Faire, The Idea of You, Kissing Jessica Stein, Friends With Kids, Bad Boys, Bad Boys II, Everybody Wants Some!!, Dazed and Confused, Nope, Evil, The X-Files, the music of Maggie Rogers, Summer of Sam, Fight Club, Se7en, Alien3, The Social Network, Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Spotlight, Prisoners, Hustle, Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Oppenheimer, Succession, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Devs, Twister, Mr. Show, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Boston Strangler, Cold Case Files, Forensic Files, I'll Be Gone In The Dark, and Accepted, among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up Masterpiece Month with the Wachowskis' magnum opus on what it means to create art under capitalism as we step behind the wheel with Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox in 2007's Speed Racer -- a movie that is sadly not available for streaming in Canada currently. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

We're dropping an episode every weekday this week to send off November's theme of COMFORT FOOD and coast right into our Christmas selections. We start the week with Bob's last nostalgia selection and there is truly none more nostalgic for a young Bob Sham than this ode to cartoon history in the form of a noir romp in the 1988 Robert Zemeckis film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” starring Bob Hoskins and Christopher Lloyd with the vocal talents of Charles Fleischer and Kathleen Turner featuring animation by Richard Williams. Big credit goes to Steven Spielberg as well who used his weight to actually get Warner Bros characters, as well as a few other cartoon properties, onto a Disney production. Seeing characters like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Betty Boop and Woody Woodpecker on the same project together was mind blowing to our young minds. The original character of Roger Rabbit was pretty great too but no cartoon character stood out of the pack quite like Jessica Rabbit. We were all horned up for this cartoon character at the time and she has never quite left our brains. Much of our nostalgia picks have been interpreted a little bit different in our adult minds but there's something about “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” that still hits us as strong as it ever did. That poor shoe. Goddamn, Judge Doom was scary as fuck. Ezen a héten egy legendás filmet pótolunk be a Vakfolt podcastban. A Roger nyúl a pácban (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) 1988-ban jelent meg, az ereje teljében lévő Robert Zemeckis rendezésében (valamint Richard Williams társrendezésében). Az élő szereplőket animációval vegyítő film noirról a Dot and Line főszerkesztőjével, Herczeg Zsófival beszélgettünk. Milyen animációs technikai eszközökkel nyűgözte le a nézőket a film? Walt Disney Pictures purchased the film rights for the film's story in 1981. Price and Seaman wrote two drafts of the script before Disney brought in executive producer Steven Spielberg and his production company, Amblin Entertainment. Zemeckis was brought on to direct the film while Canadian animator Richard Williams was hired to supervise the animation sequences. Production was moved from Los Angeles to Elstree Studios in England to accommodate Williams and his group of animators. While filming, the production budget began to rapidly expand and the shooting schedule ran longer than expected. The film was released through Disney's Touchstone Pictures banner on June 22, 1988. It received acclaim from critics, who praised its visuals, humor, writing, and performances (particularly Hoskins), with critics and audiences considering it to be "groundbreaking". It grossed over $351 million worldwide, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 1988. It brought a renewed interest in the Golden age of American animation, spearheading modern American animation and the Disney Renaissance.[7] It won three Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects and received a Special Achievement Academy Award for its animation direction by Williams. In 2016, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[8][9]

Mark and Niall Moore (@elniallo on Twitter) discuss the 1988 blockbuster classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, and starring Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Charles Fleischer, and hundreds of animated characters, the movie focuses on what happens when a surly detective and an animated rabbit team up to solve a crime. In this episode, they discuss deadly dip. Jessica Rabbit, and the insane amount of work that went into making the movie. Enjoy!
"Toons . . . Gets 'Em Every Time!" Robert Zemeckis's Who Framed Roger Rabbit On this week's episode of WatchThis, Mr. Chavez & I discuss the ground-breaking 1988 Robert Zemeckis Classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit. This is truly a game-changing film that succeeds far beyond any novelty it may appear to be. With a collection of classic fan favorite cartoon characters from Warner Brothers (Bugs, Daffy, Tweety, Yosemite Sam), Disney (Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and many of the cast of Fantasia), Max Fleischer Studios (Betty Boop), Walter Lantz Studios (Woody Woodpecker), and MGM (Droopy), this is a film that is both a nostalgic look back at Classic Animation and a beautifully realized 1940s style Film Noir. Better than it has any right to be, Zemeckis's film is a triumph of animation, technology, and acting led by Bob Hoskins (never better), Joanna Cassidy, the voice talents of Charles Fleischer, Kathleen Turner, Tony Anselmo, June Foray, The Greatest of All - Mel Blanc, and a live-action Christopher Lloyd - in one of his greatest performances - as Judge Doom. This is a fun conversation in which we dig into the film, the history of Animation, Noir, and Los Angeles. Don't miss out. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

Jimmy Fallon(Jeff Richards) traded wit and gossip with Charles Fleischer(Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Zodiac, Back to the Future II, A Nightmare on Elm Street) in this timeless classic of a tale. They go deep into the very surface of it all!
Charles Fleischer pushes the term “renaissance man” to it's limits by being an amazing comedian, actor, writer, musician, artist, inventor, and creator of MoLeeds! Best known as the voice of Roger Rabbit, Charles and I discuss his early days as a stand-up comic, meeting Robert Zemeckis, his trajectory as an actor and time at the Goodman School of Drama, his parents, and incredible artwork, and why and how MoLeeds connects to everything. We're on the second part of the “L.A. Trilogy,” and Sean and Cody are joined by two very special guests: John Dorney and Tom Salinsky, two of the three hosts of the Best Pick movie podcast! The Best Pick guys thought Who Framed Roger Rabbit should have won Best Picture in 1988, and they're here to make their case. In this zany live-action and animated comedy film noir send-up, cartoon star Roger (voiced by Charles Fleischer) is effing up at his job in 1940s Hollywood when he thinks his wife Jessica (voice of Kathleen Turner) is playing pattycake on him with one of L.A.'s biggest landlords. Private gumshoe and sometime alky Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) gets dragged into the case, which involves a mega-conspiracy to bulldoze Toontown's rail transit to build a bunch of ugly freeways. The major environmental question of the film is a big one in L.A. and American history: did a consortium of automakers and real estate developers deliberately sabotage the transit system? We puzzle out the answer, as well as the details of one of the most beloved films of all time in this toontastic episode of Green Screen. What's the real story behind the “Red Car” train that used to grace L.A.'s streets? Why were nine U.S. companies convicted in antitrust court in 1949 of conspiring to kill rail transit, and why did that case not solve the issue? Did something like the “Cloverleaf company” depicted in this film really exist? How and why did the Automobile Club of Southern California sketch out a plan to use freeways as a tool of ethnic cleansing in Los Angeles? Was the script for this film really first intended as “Chinatown, Part III?” How did the creators of this film manage to make such a huge technical achievement look so easy? What would the cartoon version of Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard look like? How is the film radically different than the book it's based on? Is Judge Doom the most terrifying cinema villain of all time? Who's Eddie Deezen and what does he have to do with this movie? All these questions and many, many more are bumping the lamp in this, one of the most fun episodes of Green Screen ever. Big thanks to John Dorney and Tom Salinsky of the Best Pick podcast, which has been a major influence on Green Screen.
