We speak with Indy contributing writer John Teufel about his latest piece about growing up in West Islip, New York. Teufel has watched West Islip, also known as “White Islip," become a MAGA bastion in recent years that is now proud to claim Daniel Penny as a favorite son. Penny is the former marine who choked homeless subway passenger Jordan Neely to death in 2023 and was acquitted on all charges in December.

On May 1, 2023, in New York City, Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old homeless American man, was killed after being put in a chokehold by Daniel Penny, a 24-year-old United States Marine Corps veteran while riding the New York City subway. Neely, who was reportedly agitated and threatening passengers, was subdued by Penny, leading to his death. Penny was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide, and a charge of second-degree manslaughter was dismissed. Neely's death prompted protests and a broader debate around Penny's actions and Neely's circumstances. When is violence necessary?

Neely should have been in a mental institution and his family should have been more aggressive in keeping him off the streets. This case had nothing to do with racism. We know what took place, Penny is a great Samaritan. Those on the left celebrating Luigi Mangione and attacking our healthcare system should be condemned. We have the greatest healthcare system, on the face of the Earth. Yes, it's imperfect but if you compare it to Canada, France, or Britain – it's superior. The celebration of a suspected murderer is dangerous and disgusting. Also, Antony Blinken was testifying and said that no one was left behind in Afghanistan. We all know that's not true. Thanks to Benjamin Netanyahu, not President Biden and Blinken, the mass murderer in Syria ran off to Moscow. Netanyahu has saved more lives than Biden could dream of. Now, Biden is trying to take credit for Netanyahu's weakening of Iran. President Biden is pardon crazy. He pardoned 39 people and commuted the sentences of 1,500 others. Police arrested Luigi Mangione at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. According to reports, Mangione was carrying a handwritten manifesto critical of the health insurance industry as well as a firearm, bullets, and multiple fraudulent forms of identification. While appearing on CNN, a former roommate revealed that the suspect suffered from a severe back condition which prevented him from doing “basic things.” 3:10pm- The far-left has attempted to justify the slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. On Bluesky, former Washington Post columnist Taylor Lorenz posted: “And people wonder why we want these executives dead.” She appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored Monday night and explained that she felt “joy” when she found out about the murder—baselessly accusing Thompson of being responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of Americans. 3:15pm- During an event at the Princeton Public Library, Governor Phil Murphy was asked about mysterious flying objects that have appeared regularly at night throughout North and Central New Jersey. Murphy explained that the FBI and Homeland Security Department are investigating the sightings—and have determined that they are “very sophisticated” objects. 3:30pm- On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre commented on the mysterious flying objects that have been sighted in New Jersey. On Monday's Mark Levin Show, the suspect in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been caught. His radicalism most likely came from his education. Today, we're reacting to Daniel Penny's acquittal of all charges for the death of Jordan Neely after the former placed Neely in a chokehold to keep him from harassing other passengers on the subway back in May 2023.
