If you've seen Ginger Snaps (2000), you know it was a movie pretty much made for Spooky Tuesday — so it's kind of a shock that it's taken us this long to get around to it. But when it comes to ending the WW part of WWVVSDE (Werewolf vs. Vampire Seasonal Depression Event), we just might have saved the best for last. On this week's episode, we're diving into the Katharine Isabelle cult classic, breaking down the social commentary exactly as Emily Perkins would've wanted, and calling out all of the cultural touch points past and future that this flick was in conversation with. This week we have a look at the 2000 horror film GingerSnaps. This is Episode #454! Ginger Snaps is a 2000 Canadian supernatural horror film directed by John Fawcett and written by Karen Walton, from a story they jointly developed. The film stars Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle as Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald, two morbid teenage sisters whose relationship is tested when Ginger (who has started her period for the first time) is attacked and bitten by an unknown animal, and then later, during the next full moon, slowly starts to transform into a werewolf. The supporting cast features Kris Lemche, Jesse Moss, Danielle Hampton, John Bourgeois, Peter Keleghan, and Mimi Rogers.Ginger Snaps received a limited theatrical release in May 2001. Despite modest box office receipts, the film was a critical success. It has since amassed a cult following and has been reexamined for its feminist themes. It was followed by a sequel, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, and a prequel, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning, which were filmed back-to-back and both released in 2004.This week's endorsements:Julia - Severance and The TraitorsTony - Warlung, Scorpion Child, Trick r Treat Non-Special-Edition Version, Gothic Slayers, Companion, The GorgeDrew - The MatronBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.

Send us a textThe Final Chapter for Friday the 13th: The Episode? I'm afraid so. One movie does feature a guest appearance by one Fred Krueger, so there's that. And the other is a reboot attempt that fared well at the box office. But no! That's all. This Voorhees guy is finished! Maybe. But while you're waiting, you may as well hear our opinions of the 11th and 12th entries in the Friday the 13th film series. One, two, Freddy's coming for you. Three, four, Jason's at your door, in Freddy vs. Jason (2003)! And then from there, welcome to Crystal Lake. Again. It's Friday the 13th (2009)!
Eric from Bloody Good Horror joins Caitlin to cover 2004's Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed. We revisit monstrous menstruation as a trope and praise the movie for being a truly excellent sequel. Tangents include: podcasting, snacks, PSLs, urban legends, easter eggs in horror movies, legs vs eyes count, werewolves vs regular dogs, soups, flaws that would save us in a horror movie, and animated movies. Be sure to check out Eric's music HY-FY, especially his new album, dropping Friday, September 13th.
Happy FRIDAY Creek Talkers!

Gaius and Jackson look back at one of cinema's greatest grudge matches between two horror movie icons in Freddy vs. Jason for the film's 20th anniversary. Directed by Ronny Yu and written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the film is a crossover between the A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises and it puts their respective antagonists, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, against each other. Freddy has become weakened and forgotten because the citizens of his home town Springwood have defeated him by using medications to repress dreams. Freddy awakens Jason to stir up fear and grow his powers so that he may return and kill again but Jason turns out to not be easily controlled as Freddy initially thought and the two supernatural mass murderers come into a major conflict. Starring Robert Englund, Ken Kirzinger, Monica Keena, Kelly Rowland, Jason Ritter, Chris Marquette, Katharine Isabelle, and more, the pair look into the film's impact at the time of its release, the movie's long journey to the big screen, performances, favorite scenes and more! There were no visual effects; all effects are either practical, or Mary's patients are members of the real-life body modification community. The role of Mary was written specifically for Katharine Isabelle. The script was written while the Soskas were trying to sell their film Dead Hooker in a Trunk, and it mirrors some of the experiences that they had in the film industry, such as meeting sleazy people that seem initially reputable.ReleaseAmerican Mary premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival on 27 August 2012. It received a limited theatrical run in the U.S. on 31 May 2013 and became available on video on demand on 16 May 2013.Home MediaIt was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 21 January 2013 by Universal Pictures UK. The release includes a behind-the-scenes documentary with cast and crew as well as a feature titled An American Mary in London, which detailed the world premiere.ReceptionThe film received generally mixed reviews, with praise for Isabelle's performance and the film's use of black comedy, but criticism for the film's abrupt ending. Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, reports that 62% of 52 surveyed critics gave positive reviews; the average rating was 5.9/10. The site's consensus reads: "It suffers a bit from some uneven acting and an underwhelming climax, but American Mary utilizes pitch black humor and striking visuals to deliver gory, freaky thrills for body horror enthusiasts".It has score of 46 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 15 reviews. Andy Webster of The New York Times designated it a NYT Critics' Pick and wrote that American Mary "combines gore, quiet dread, feminist conviction and a visual classicism, often using a red palette, with impressive, unbelabored dexterity." Joshua Rothkopf of Time Out New York rated the film 2/5 and wrote that the film starts out promising but ends up "going for the gross-out". In a mixed review, Dennis Harvey of Variety called the film "outre and entertaining" but "doesn't develop all its narrative and thematic ideas to the fullest." Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times wrote that the film "turn[s] slack and unfocused after an enticingly lurid, wickedly tense first half."#americanmary #beyonce #prettyhurts #bodymodification #surgery #plasticsurgery #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic

More women! More horror! Directors. And movies. We're right in the middle of a three-part series on horror movies directed by women! This episode features very strong evidence that sometimes dead is better, a young girl who dreams of creepy storybook characters while rabbits run wild in Australia, western expansion and cannibalism in the 19th-century, and a promising medical student driven to pursue an unconventional surgical career. Stephen King should be ashamed of himself. He gave a perfectly respectful graveyard honoring animals such a bad rap. It's a place where the dead speak. But you certainly do not want to go beyond, to the place where the dead walk! Director Mary Lambert takes us there and back again, in the first feature film adaptation of Pet Sematary (1989).Political tension, and rabbit panic are running wild in Australia in 1957. A young girl struggles with forbidden friendships, the death of her grandmother, the threat of her pet rabbit being taken away, and even her own imagination. Childhood proves to be a very challenging experience for Celia (1989), directed by Ann Turner. It's manifest destiny time in the United States. But some of these characters are definitely not who you would hope to encounter if you were heading west in the mid-1800s. Director Antonia Bird serves up a darkly comedic adventure of gruesome cannibalism, with some truly unsettling music setting the tone, in Ravenous (1999)!Ah, Katharine Isabelle is featured in the role of Mary Mason. A promising young medical student, who uses her skill to perform underground body modification surgeries. But why would she leave medical school for such a pursuit? Well, money. And revenge. The Soska Sisters invite you to spend a little time under the knife, with American Mary (2012).

This week we tackle a classic theme in the horror genre: WEREWOLVES. However rather than start with what might be thought of as the typical classic werewolf movies we decided to watch Gingersnaps, a canadian release from 2000 which explores the werewolf narrative through the eyes of teen girls.A heads up that this film and our discussion of it touches on subjects like animal death, gore, discussion of sex, drugs, and suicide. Additionally we will be fully spoiling the movie and we feel your experience will be a lot better if you watch this movie in particular before listening to the podcast. The plot is fairly complicated, there are some cool twists, and we don't want any of those to be dampened by spoilers ahead of time, so if you haven't seen it and wish to, pause now and come back when you're ready! We'll be waiting.SummaryGinger Snaps is a 2000 Canadian horror film directed by John Fawcett who would later go on to co-create the popular tv show Orphan Black. The film was written by Karen Walton, scored by Mike Shields, with cinematography by Thom Best and editing by Brett Sullivan. The film opens in the community of Bailey Downs. In a shot reminiscent of Poltergeist, the camera pans across grotesquely similar houses that have metastasized on the natural landscape in a relatively new housing development. The opening shots linger on the edge of the development where the cookie-cutter houses give way to the wilds of nature. We witness the early and horrific discovery of a family dog's remains, victim of an apparent animal attack and, we find out soon, only one in a series of such incidents. As the woman who discovers the dog screams in the background, we see her neighbor and central character, Brigitte Fitzgerald (played by Emily Perkins) walking cautiously out of the garage armed with a variety of dangerous looking tools including a blowtorch.Hunching her shoulders, glaring angrily at the world, pale faced and gothic, Brigitte enters the house to tell her sister, Ginger Fitzgerald (played by Katharine Isabelle) about the neighbors dog, interrupting what at first appears to be a suicide attempt. It is clear in a moment that Ginger is just showing off or playing at the theme of suicide, adopting a bored-of-life attitude that reeks of teen angst. After some angry banter we realize the girls have adopted identities as gothy town outcasts and have promised each other to escape their dreary town by 16 or else die in a suicide pact.We transition to a typical high school. After a classroom scene where the girls cause a stir with their suicide themed class project, we cut to gym class outside with boys ogling girls playing field hockey. Ginger and Brigitte fight with Trina Sinclair, a popular girl and apparent bully. Coming out on the short end of that exchange, Ginger cajoles Brigitte into kidnapping Trina's dog. That night, in the middle of executing that plan Ginger finds she is bleeding and realizes with horror that she is the first of the sisters to get her period.Drawn by the scent of blood, a beast in the night viciously attacks and bites Ginger, dragging her into the forest. In a panic Brigitte runs after her and tries to scare off the beast with the flash from her instant camera. The beast is startled and runs off, immediately killed after being hit by a van driven by Sam Miller (played by Kris Lemche), a local pot dealer and, we find out later, botany nerd.Ginger recovers from her attack, horrible wounds healing rapidly, and a series of physical and behavioral transformations begin. Her latent anger and aggression boil over, bristly hair grows in her scars from the attack, a tail buds at the base of her spine, and her period intensifies. Previously hidden under layers of clothes she strides into school in a tight outfit and with new self assurance.

On this edition of Parallax Views, a new movie called The Green Sea tells a story that combines straightforward drama with the magical realism reminiscent of authors like Haruki Murakami (Kafka on the Shore, Norwegian Wood) and elements of the kind of ghost stories bringing to mind M.R. James. Its writer and director has an interesting lineage, to say the least. Oliver Plunkett is the 21st Baron of Dunsany, one of the oldest continuously lived in estates in all of Ireland. He's the ancestor of the fantasy writer Lord Dunsany (aka Edward Plunkett, the 18th Baron of Dunsany), who influenced such authors as Cthulhu mythos creator H.P. Lovecraft and The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien. He's a noted fan of black metal and death metal, has directed numerous zombie and horror films, and environmentalist. In terms of the latter he has gained both praise and scorn for his notorious decision to rewild the Dunsany estate, turning it into the Dunsany Nature Preserve. With the recently released The Green Sea, Plunkett made his feature film debut as a director. And, as it turns out, the film has many deeply personal and even autobiographic elements in it that shed light on Plunkett's views on creativity, isolation, alienation, the mysteries of life, the importance of social relationships, finding solace in nature, regret and redemption, self-expression, and the power of the imagination. From the IMDB Plot summary for The Green Sea: Simone (Katharine Isabelle), an American writer living a solitary life in Irish countryside, is haunted by visions of her past which begin to intertwine with the fantasy world of the novel she is writing, blurring the lines between reality and the fantasy. Her life changes, when the protagonist of her book, known only as "Kid", played by up and coming Irish actress Hazel Doupe (Float Like A Butterfly), appears to her as a victim of a drunk driving incident that forces the pair together. This sets up the beginning of an unlikely relationship, ultimately setting off a chain of events that will force Simone to face her sinister past. Randal Plunkett joins us on this edition of Parallax Views to discuss this exciting new film that can only be described as a mysterious hybrid of genres. In addition, our conversation allows us to delve into the history of the Dunsany family estate, the musical genius of musicians Scott Conner of the infamous black metal and "doomgrass" one-man-bands Xasthur and Nocturnal Poisoning as well as Justin K. Broadrick of the industrial metal act Godflesh and the post-metal pioneers Jesu, the brilliance of The Green Sea's lead actress Katharine Isabelle (know for her title role in the innovative werewolf movie franchise Ginger Snaps as well as appearances in Freddy vs. Jason, American Mary, and hit TV shows like Hannibal and The Order among others), the rewilding of the Dunsany estate and the backlash it has caused against Randal, the difficulties of making an independent film that blends different genres, and The Green Sea's themes of alienation, the powers of the imagination, alienation, the mysteries inherent to life and consciousness, and how it all relates to Randal's own philosophy and experiences. All that and much more on this jam-packed nearly two hour long edition of Parallax Views.

If you love a good scare, this episode is for you! This week on the podcast, our host chats with Adam MacDonald and Katharine Isabelle, two veterans of the horror genre, who call Canada home. Since he was a little boy, Adam MacDonald was captivated by the horror genre. The thrills and chills from classics like The Exorcist and Evil Dead had him wondering how directors figured out the perfect scares. Fast forward to today, Adam is a filmmaker with two features under his belt, his 2015 film Backcountry and his 2017 film Pyewacket. He is also a director on the Netflix series Slasher Solstice. Katherine Isabelle grew up on the gloomy film sets of Vancouver, as she watched her father work as an art director on shows like the X-Files. Since then, her acting career has blown up, and you can catch her in major films like American Mary, Freddy vs. Jason, and in television shows such as Hannibal and The Order on Netflix. Perhaps Katharine is best known for her role as Ginger in the 2000 horror film Ginger Snaps, which is now hailed as a feminist horror classic. So sit down, kick back, and get comfortable (but not too comfortable, because you never know what's lurking in the shadows) and get a behind-the-scenes look at Canadian horror! Not only did GINGER SNAPS (2000) challenge typical horror movie tropes, but it was also a vibrant kick to the werewolf genre. This week the Horror Junkies dive into the world of Patrick Bateman and Mary Mason as we discuss American Psycho, American Psycho 2, and American Mary. American Psycho starring Christian Bale, is a movie that will forever be horror junkies must watch list. From its complex story line, to the narration by Christian himself, viewers can find themselves lost in the rabbit hole if they're not paying attention. Crazy kill scenes and the best soundtrack. American Psycho 2: All American Girl, is probably the worst movie we've seen and that's saying something. From the bad writing, acting, plot, and everything else. This movie is just a pathetic attempt of a studio trying to make some money on by slapping a title from a hit movie and claiming its a sequel. American Mary is a pretty dark movie. The main character goes through traumatic event, and then finds herself seeking revenge on the man who did it. Though it portrays a bad view of the world of body modifications, this movie does have some cool elements. Unfortunately, the last 30 mins of the movie really just fall apart. The only amazing thing about this movie is Katharine Isabelle. As always on the show we discuss the latest in Horror news and this week turned out to have some really good articles. First up, DC Comics is releasing Constantine: City of Demons on October 9th, and the trailer looks fucking incredible. Another article we talk about is the 3rd, and hopefully last, trailer for the upcoming Venom movie starring Tom Hardy. Do they show to much? Will this be the Venom we deserve? All of these answers and more to come. Our show teamed up with Shudder, a Horror movie subscription site that brings screams on demand.

This week on the 2015 WHM Spooktacular, it's Franchise Time as the gang heads to Crystal Lake by way of Springwood to challenge the long awaited 2003 monster team-up, Freddy vs. Jason! Why do they insist on reminding us about Freddy and Jason's backstories? How do they not capitalize on any previously existing supporting characters in either franchise? And how do you have the audacity to recast Kane Hodder? PLUS: That sure is a whole lot of homophobia and racism, screenplay! Freddy vs. Jason stars Robert Englund, Ken Kirzinger, Monica Keena, Jason Ritter, Kelly Rowland, Katharine Isabelle and Lochlyn Munro; directed by Ronny Yu.
In this episode of THE MILKSHAKE BOOM, we sink our blood-soaked claws into the greatest Canadian werewolf movie ever made: 'Ginger Snaps'! This little gem, directed by John Fawcett, stars Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins! And since werewolves are often just a metaphor for puberty, the gang trade embarrassing stories of growing up and Christine schools us all on the art of playing dead!
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Werewolves and horror. It's been a mixed bag. Some classics like the Lon Chaney Jr. Wolfman comes to mind. As does a nice revival of the monster in the early 1980's with The Howling and An American Werewolf in London which has defined the careers of their directors (Joe Dante and John Landis respectively). Another cult classic can be added to the conversation with the Katharine Isabelle star making performance in Ginger Snaps. But another, Dog Soldiers, brought a director to the attention of many. Neil Marshall wrote and directed the 2002 film that allowed him the attention he needed to go on and direct such things as The Decent and Game of Thrones. This British production is about a group of special forces on training out in the middle of the wilderness. Unfortunately for them, the remoteness is also the home to what may be a family of werewolves. Was it coincidence? Could such a monster actually exist? With a training mission now as an operation of survival, the soldiers lock down in a isolated cabin to fight for their lives against not just monsters but possibly a conspiracy that goes higher than their pay grade. Back in 2014, Dark Discussions Podcast had a few polls where we listed a handful of films for listeners to choose for us to discuss. Dog Soldiers was one of them and swept away the competition. With our prior episode of the werewolf film Wer, it was time to release this episode to go hand in hand with a more modern lycanthrope film. Dog Soldiers, a minor classic, may not necessarily be Neil Marshall's best work, but it showed the potential of what was to come from a modern genre director. Written and directed by young Regina, Canada, filmmaker Lowell Dean, WOLFCOP is a horror-comedy that follows Lou Garou (Leo Fafard), an alcoholic cop who tends to black out and wake up in unfamiliar surroundings. However, lately things have taken a strange turn. Crime scenes seem oddly familiar, Lou's senses are heightened, and when the full moon is out, he's a rage-fueled werewolf. WOLFCOP is one cop's quest to become a better man... one transformation at a time.CineCoup's debut feature film WOLFCOP -- selected in a worldwide competition to be their initial offering -- opened to sold out audiences across western Canada on June 6. As a result of its howling success, WOLFCOP will expand across Canada in Cineplex theaters on June 13th, which auspiciously happens to be the full moon AND Friday the 13th! In the midst of all this lunacy, the filmmakers have announced a WOLFCOP sequel, to be released in 2015.“It is not often that Canadian films open to such high box office numbers,” says CineCoup Founder and CEO J Joly. “We used complete guerilla style grassroots marketing that focused on finding the film's core audience to spread the word ... this truly is a coup for the future of independent filmmaking.”Prior to WOLFCOP, Dean's best known work was the zombie flick 13 EERIE starring Katharine Isabelle.
