This is Part 5 in the series that covers the story of Billy Sol Estes, Mac Wallace, Bobby Baker and other members of Johnson's Texas inner circle. Men who were quite intertwined around Johnson at the time of the assassination. These men were involved in circumstances that were closing in on Johnson too and that provided him great motive in the killing of the president. Today's episode continues with the story of Billy Sol Estes as we present the third mini episode wander into the story of the Henry Marshall murder. Today's episode goes deeper and covers the final portion of the story tell as it appeared in the 1986 Texas Observer article by Bill Adler. Marshall, who worked for the agriculture department, dared to step in front of Billy Sol Este's cotton allotment scheme and he paid the price for it with his life. The case was originally ruled a suicide until larger forces prevailed. According to Estes, this murder is but one of many that can be tied back to Lyndon Johnson and Mac Wallace. It also involves Cliff Carter and Estes himself. Rumors of Johnson's involvement began to swirl almost immediately after the assassination and there is a defined school of thought within the JFK assassination research community that staunchly believes in Johnson's involvement. His involvement in both the assassination and its cover up. Join us in one of the most fascinating story tells of the Kennedy assassination and stick around as we will be returning to the Mexico City series right after we complete this min-series that was spawned by the recent release of the Billy Sol Estes and Cliff Carter tape that the two recorded in 1971. Folks, you just can't write this stuff. Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it, were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This real-life story is more fascinating than fiction. No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.

Letters from Vietnam To connect with family, friends, and loved ones back home today's servicemen and women utilize email and live-video calls. That wasn't always the case. In Vietnam, our brave men and women deployed overseas had to rely on written letters. These letters could contain good news, bad news, or no news at all. “Mail Call” was either a respite from the stressors of war or a depressing event. But what specifically did these letters contain? And how did our troops respond? What details did they omit to protect their loved ones? Did they fear a Dear John or Dear Jane letter? Joining The Scuttlebutt this week to talk about the history of letter writing in the military including their personal letters home are Vietnam Veterans Donn Nemchick (Navy) and Jim Roberts (Army). Their wars couldn't have been more different. Donn served on a ship while Jim served in the bush. How did they each receive their mail? And what did they write about when it came time to respond? Was Mail Call always a happy time? And what of our boys that fought in WWII? What was V-mail? We also discuss the books, museums, and online exhibits that catalogue and preserve the stories of our servicemen and women for future generations. Back in the late 1970s a new music genre exploded on the world stage: rap. This episode's guest Bill Adler was right there near the beginning, first as a fan and music journalist, and then working for Def Jam Records and Rush Management. Adler recently donated his enormous treasure trove of hip-hop related artifacts to Cornell University, of which has become digitized and is available online for public use. We used some of the materials found there to talk about everything from the film Wild Style, rap pioneers like Busy Bee, Fab Five Freddy, the Funky 4+1, the massive career of LL Cool J to even the controversy over the presence of anti-semitism in the Public Enemy organization and how it touched Adler personally. Spring has sprung which means it's allergy season but also baseball season, so we are playing two today. First up we have a good chat with Brooklyn-based producer Steel Tipped Dove. It sounds like hyperbole, but it is a fact that some of the best modern rap music in the world was recorded in his home studio. He also released an album, Call Me When You're Outside, late last year featuring some of our favorite MCs. Our second interview this week is with the legendary publicist, author, and one of hip-hop's first professional explainers, Bill Adler. Bill worked at Def Jam during the dawn of hip-hop's international expansion. He worked with Run-DMC and LL Cool J among many other foundational artists, and has had a long and interesting career in the art world as well. DBRP is a proud part of the Stony Island Audio network, the only podcast network with two essential hip-hop podcasts according to a recent Uproxx article! Learn more about your ad choices. Music journalist and insider Bill Adler comes Back By the Woodpile with a big bag full of musical Christmas goodies, including tunes by Kurtis Blow, Run-DMC, Sonny Boy Williamson, Irma Thomas and others. This episode is bittersweet for me. The things I love on Quad City DJs' All-Star Christmas make me very happy, and this week one half of the Quad City DJs, CC Lemonhead, tells the story of the Jacksonville, Florida DJs' journey from "Whoot! There it Is" to "Tootsie Roll" to "C'mon and Ride It (The Train)" to "What You Want for Christmas." It's the kind of story I love, with people working up homemade solutions to musical challenges, and what happens along the way. Unfortunately, one of the things that happened is that CC and his partner Jay-Ski fell out during the recording of Quad City DJs' debut album for Atlantic Records, Get on Up and Dance, and he was out of the picture entirely for the recording of All-Star Christmas in 1996. Equally unfortunately, I didn't know that until a half-hour into our interview. So far, Jay-Ski has not responded to interview requests, but I'm going to keep trying. Fortunately, last episode's guest, Bill Adler, tracked down one of the singers on the album, an artist who goes by the name of Big Tyme and recorded "Xmas Blues," otherwise known as Bonquisha and Otis, which bounce rapper Big Freedia turned me on to on a previous episode. Adler wrote the story for LL Cool J's Rock The Bells website, so I this episode I read an excerpt of it to help answer one more question about the album. In this episode, singer Alexandra Scott returns to talk with me about new Christmas music from Meghan Trainor, Ingrid Michaelson, and Amanda Shires. You can hear Alexandra's music on her Bandcamp page. This episode is sponsored by Car-Floats.com, purveyors of removable, reusable fabric stickers for your car. If you haven't already done so, please do what you have to do to get Twelve Songs in your podcast feed. You can find us at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, and Spotify.
The impulse to share my findings while collecting Christmas music led me to this podcast, and it led Bill Adler to Christmas Jollies, an annual Christmas mix that he has made and distributed to family, friends, and folks in the music industry since the mid-1980s. Adler started his career in the music industry as the director of publicity at Def Jam Records and Rush Management from 1984-1990, so while his tastes are much broader than simply hip-hop, hip-hop Christmas music by Kurtis Blow and Run-DMC play a meaningful part in his own Christmas music story. We talk about their Christmas songs today, along with the self-imposed parameters that anyone who makes mixes will recognize immediately. We also talk about some of the songs that he has and hasn't included on mixes in recent years including songs by Joey Ramone, Irma Thomas, and Aaron LaCombe. The episode ends with a track that I incorrectly identified in the episode as "Santa Rap." I have thought of the song as "Santa Rap" for so long that it didn't occurred to me to check the title of the Treacherous Three's track from from the Beat Street soundtrack from 1984. If I had done so before I packed up my recording gear, I might have correctly identified the song as "Xmas Rap." In the episode, I said that you can email me to get a special, listeners-only 2021 Christmas mix. Send me an email at alex@myspiltmilk.com and I'll send one your way.

In 1966, one sure way to make money was to tie your product to the Batman TV show in some way. Bill Adler was an expert at riding the latest wave, and in that year he released Bill Adler's Funniest Fan Letters to Batman, a collection of real (?) fan letters sent by fans (mostly kids) of the Caped Crusader's TV show and comic books. In this episode, we discuss this book and read some of our favorite letters from it. Then Ben Bentley of 66batman.com (AAA-aa, AAA-aa) stops by to fill us in further on last episode's question regarding the similarities of various "living room" sets from the show, and more. Ben and co-moderator of the board Scott Sebring have been enjoying tracking the reappearances of various bat-sets, and the living room question sent Ben down other set-related rabbit holes, including figuring out which set was used for the library in the Batgirl/Killer Moth presentation reel! Plus, the Kitsch and Camp version of the theme, and your mail about our discussion of Legends of the Superheroes: The Challenge! Tis the season—for Chinese food and a movie! Our first Jewish guest is Bill Adler, the Def Jam alum who helped Run DMC create their iconic 1987 song "Christmas in Hollis". He tells us how he went from being a music journalist to the second full-time employee at Def Jam in the 1980s; how "Christmas in Hollis," ended up on the soundtrack of films like Die Hard, and how his distaste for cliche holiday music led him to make an annual Christmas playlist for friends and family, and now, you! Listen to Adler's 2018 Christmas Jollies mix here. We also talk to Steven de Souza, the Hollywood screenwriter responsible for films like Commando, Judge Dredd, and, of course, Die Hard.
