DAMION1White House blasts Amazon over tariff cost report: ‘Hostile and political act'The White House on Tuesday slammed Amazon for reportedly planning to display the cost of President Donald Trump's tariffs next to the total price of products on its site.“This is hostile and political act by Amazon,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters. “Why didn't Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” Leavitt asked. The Trump administration's aggressive swipe came in response to a report that Amazon will soon show consumers how much of an item's cost comes from tariffs. The amount added as a result of tariffs will be displayed right next to each product's total listed price, a person familiar with the plan told the news outlet.WHO DO YOU BLAME?CEO Andrew Jassy. He's the “boss.”Maybe he feels emasculated?Lowest overall batting average (.308)only 6% influence compared to his boss, Jeff Bezos (67%)Not paid like traditional CEOs (relying instead on his $275M in unvested equity) and the $38M that vested last year; so when he's hanging out withHis buddies like Target CEO Brian Cornell ($20M) eBay CEO Jamie Iannone ($22M) have the total summary compensation bragging rights. Not to mention the sad, unmanly CEO Pay Ratio which is listed as 43:1 for Jassy and 753:1 for the DEI-hating Cornell Jeffrey Preston Bezos (67%)I mean he's the actual boss, right?Executive Chair, founder, former CEO, superstar.Hangs out with people like Katy Perry, has a newspaper, sends penis rockets to nowhere, has pretend funds named after himself like the Bezos Earth Fund and the Bezos Day One FundBoard member and former Pepsi CEO Indra NooyiOr maybe this is a DEI problem? She said the US Air Force is accepting jets that lack "functional" radar systems, without offering evidence. She also claimed that Lockheed is "increasingly obsessed with pushing a woke agenda." Like many other US defense contractors, Lockheed scrapped its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in January after Trump returned to the White House. The $2 trillion F-35 program is an appealing target for activists and officials seeking to slash government spending, and it has a well-documented list of problems. The Pentagon's top weapons tester said earlier this year that the program had problems delivering functional software and had fallen behind schedule to test upgraded mission systems.WHO DO YOU BLAME?The 2025 Proxy Statement that mentions “diversity” five times!Of course all five of those instances were in the anti-woke/anti-DEI shareholder proposal introduced by the Bahnsen Family Trust. Not sure how this even made the proxy after Lockheed's anti-DEI move in January: “As we publicly stated following the issuance of President Trump's January 2025 Executive Order on DEI, we will not have goals or incentives based on demographic representation or Affirmative Action Plans. We are actively reviewing our workforce-related policies to ensure they are, and remain, compliant and aligned with the Executive Order and all related applicable legal precedent.”The three-headed white guy leadership group (53% influence)CEO/Chair James Taiclet (25%): $24M in payLead Independent Director and Nominating Committee chair Thomas J. "How Do We Lead?" Sunday, December 8, 2024 Church has always been a place (and houses of worship in general) where the definition and understanding of how leadership shows up among us is broader and fuller than the world sometimes defines it. It's not so much that we loosen the definition but that we see so clearly how it takes so many different skills and gifts to make the whole of what we want to do together possible. This Sunday we will ask three leaders, in different tenures of leadership, to reflect on what calls them into the work and what they have learned and reflect on our own notion of and call to lead. The service is created and led with our Nominating Committee -- the group charged at UUSF not just of identifying leaders but equipping and developing and celebrating their leadership. Rev. Wild sheep matter, and so does selecting the future leadership of the Wild Sheep Foundation in our upcoming fall 2024 WSF Board of Director elections. Last year, we started something new by introducing the candidates, not only in print with their biographies on our website and mailed ballots, but with brief interviews on this podcast. We have four (4) current director terms expiring April 30, 2025. The Nominating Committee approved five (5) candidates for the fall ballot for these four open director positions.  The fall elections open October 1, 2024, and close on December 15, 2024. John is joined by Jon Ballis, the Chairman of Kirkland & Ellis, LLP, one of the world's leading law firms with approximately 3,500 attorneys around the world.  Jon describes his path to leadership at the firm, from joining Kirkland in 2005 from another firm as an M&A lawyer without aspirations for management, to his election to the Management Committee and his elevation to Chairman in January 2020.  Jon explains Kirkland's governance, emphasizing the firm's flat organizational structure and the absence of many formal titles which he believes encourages organic leadership development.  He also explains Kirkland's unique Nominating Committee system, which seeks to avoid entrenchment and favoritism by allowing members to serve on the Nominating Committee only once in their careers.  They also discuss Kirkland's strategic focus, particularly its approach to talent management and strategy.  Jon says that the firm's strategy is client-driven, evolving organically based on where its clients are heading, rather than adhering to a rigid, top-down plan and how this client-focused approach has led to Kirkland expanding its private equity practice to include areas like energy, infrastructure, and private equity credit.  Jon then explains Kirkland's approach to compensation and lateral hiring, dismissing the idea that Kirkland "buys business" through offering high compensation for laterals based on their “book of business.”  He says that the firm focuses on hiring talent to meet growing client demand.  He says that Kirkland's litigation business grossed almost $2 billion last year and operates at close to the same margins as its transactional business.  Jon then discusses the merit-based compensation system at Kirkland, which is subjective and not formulaic.  Every two years, the firm conducts a review and assigns each partner a set number of points that determine that partner's compensation for the next two years.  Jon explains Kirkland has two classes of nonequity or income partners, one class that are on track to either become equity partners or move on and a second class of permanent income partners.  Finally, John and Jon discuss the challenges of maintaining leadership in the legal industry, including the importance of continuous improvement, innovation, and a willingness to take risks to maintain excellence.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B. Senator Bob Duff is a state senator from Connecticut and has been the Majority Leader since 2015.  Bob's Norwalk family ties go back five generations. His passion for public service began at the age of eight. That's when Bob voiced his concerns for the future of Duffy Field to then-mayor William Collins. Today, we still have Duffy Field — now renamed Veterans Park. Since joining the legislature, Bob has been a tireless advocate for job creation in Connecticut. Bob has also earned a reputation as a consumer watchdog. As Chair of the legislature's Housing Committee, he created the state's first Housing Trust Fund to build more affordable housing in Connecticut. As Chair of the Banking Committee, Bob worked to safeguard Connecticut homeowners from the ravages of predatory lending by creating a package of first-in-the-nation reforms to reduce the number of home foreclosures in the state. Included was the foreclosure mediation program, Mortgage Crisis Job Training Program (the first iteration to the federally recognized and nationally acclaimed Platform to Employment program) to help those unemployed or underemployed avoid foreclosure and a law that provides tools to municipalities ensuring lenders maintain their vacant properties.  Bob's consumer advocacy continued as he went on to Chair the Energy and Technology Committee. As Chair, Bob championed two major pieces of energy legislation which taken together implement a new comprehensive energy strategy for Connecticut: restructuring support for renewable sources of electricity to provide for cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy for consumers and businesses. Bob also supported the nation's first cybersecurity report by a state government relating to safeguarding our electric grid and water utilities.  In addition, the Senate Democratic caucus with Bob has achieved numerous legislative victories. Most recently, the caucus passed legislation standing up for DREAMers, the National Popular Vote, net neutrality, data privacy, health care access, Time's Up, gun safety, LGBTQ rights, equal pay for equal work, raising the minimum wage and Paid Family Medical Leave. Bob has also been involved with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) serving on both the Foundation Board and Nominating Committee and active in their leadership programs. Throughout his legislative career, Bob has been honored by The Workplace Inc., AARP of Connecticut, the Lockwood-Matthews Mansion Museum, the Save Cranbury Association, Side-by-Side Charter School, the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, Greater Stamford Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Women's Business Development Council, the Maritime Aquarium, the Norwalk NAACP, the Norwalk Marching Bears, Inc., Action for Bridgeport Community Development and the Norwalk Public Schools Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee. After graduating Norwalk Public Schools, Bob earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Lynchburg College in Virginia. There, Bob honed his political skills as a student senator, campus leader and intern for then-U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT). Bob, his wife, Tracey, and their two children live on Toilsome Avenue in Norwalk with their rescue dog, Molly.

Hey there, I'm Angela Germano and today I am sharing my big thing -- my big thing that is bringing me happiness right now, and I hope it inspires you.     Transcript   Hey there. You're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today I'm Angela Germano taking over.   Katie asked me, what do you do now that brings happiness? What is your big thing? Come on now. It's doing the show. It's doing Everyday Happiness to chat with you. I mean, you've all been so fabulous to me and I love it. So very grateful to be here this week.   So, to answer Katie's questions, what brings me happiness? I think the biggest thing I do now that brings me happiness is well, it sounds a bit different, but I'm just being honest. It's my thing.   I do whatever I want to do at the moment. Yeah, that's my thing. That's what I'm going with. I wrote about this in my first collaborative book called Women Who Illuminate. My story is called Rooted. Doing my thing makes me happy. It gets my juices flowing. It's a mindset and empowering way of being that's rooted in self care and feels really incredible to the core.   If it's great driving weather, well, then I'm taking a drive. Music blasting, windows down, carefree joyride while singing my heart out and car dancing. Sometimes my thing is getting routine massages on customer appreciation day at the spa so I can spin wheels, talk about holistic health, play games and win prizes like oils and stretches.   I mean, I get my happiness on by going to the doctors for checkups because I can. You know, I'm fortunate enough to have good healthcare as a teacher, and I'm going to use it.   I chat with friends on the phone. I chat with strangers, I bike ride, I rollerblade, I explore in all the ways that I want. I push my limits. I dream, I fantasize, and then I manifest what I want. I believe in myself to the point where my mind just says it's okay and I just do my thing.   Following my intuition, having trust in myself to feel the right way to go and be. That's my thing. That's how I get my happiness. Thanks for listening to me all week. Catch another episode of Everyday Happiness tomorrow.   About Angela:    Angela Germano is currently an award-winning middle school Language Arts teacher, Communication professor, multi-faceted professional writer in the global medical and self-care sectors and produces inspirational documentaries. Hey there, I'm Angela Germano and today I am sharing how I bring happiness into my daily life.   Transcript   Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today, I'm Angela Germano taking over.   Katie asked me, how do I bring happiness into my life? And I can't help but to giggle. I mean, seriously. I just picture the all too familiar scene that you might be able to relate to. I don't know, maybe your kids are screaming over something stupid like, he's on my part of the couch. Or the TV is blasting YouTube way over the agreed upon level. Your husband is talking loud enough on the phone that they can hear him across state lines. Why do men talk that loud? I don't know. Coats, shoes, socks, sweatshirts, you name it, all over the living room you just straightened up. An endless pile of mail just mounting up. Your sweet little daughter is dripping from blood from yet another too close encounter with a family pet. Seriously, Callie, why do you have to give butterfly kisses to the cat?   How do I bring happiness into that life? Well, I try because happiness is everywhere. You just have to open your eyes and see it. With all the crazy, uncontrollable chaos that happens in our lives, we need to celebrate.   Celebrate every step of the way. And that is how I'm answering this one, Katie. Celebrate. Let's all sing some Madonna. Celebrate. This is how I bring happiness into our family.   Yes - when we get into an argument, I'm like, nope, you gotta sing it. You gotta sing it. We're not allowed to have that tone. So we got to sing. We celebrate every chance we get. We try to infuse laughter. We do this in all sorts of ways.   Sometimes I sound like we're so not the Brady Bunch, but I'm envisioning like the Brady Bunch here. Sometimes we do have a little talent show. My daughter's like, wait, I'm going to sing. My son is like, wait, I'm going to do a magic show. That's how we celebrate.   Like a good grade. Sometimes we make homemade food together. We take a walk on the boardwalk to celebrate. A bike ride, a hike. We go out for treats. It doesn't have to be costly. We just need to note the good that happened and then we're celebrating it.   So I'm going to tell you a little story. I have wonderful neighbors. I really do. I'm very grateful. And one of them, Sue, she follows all of my social posts. She's always in amazement of what we have going on. Like, “oh, you're always doing something with your kids, Angela”. She's very complimentary. And one day Sue says, I get it now, Ang, “you make a big deal out of everything and then you post it”.   It doesn't even have to be for a big reason. And you know what? She said it exactly right. It doesn't have to be for a big reason. We share the good. We celebrate. We commemorate memories, like a family movie, reminding us of good times. Those celebrations and memories of celebrations also help us to refocus when we lose our way and help us continue the good.   It's positive reinforcement, really. And I want my children to be conditioned that way. We celebrate all the good. We celebrate a beautiful day. We celebrate a compliment. We celebrate  recognition of effort. We celebrate trying something new. All of it. And with anyone who wants to join.   So how do I bring happiness into my life? Well, by recognizing the good. And all of us celebrating it. We celebrate it all because we're grateful. And as we know, with gratitude comes happiness.   See you tomorrow for another episode. Because I am here all week.   About Angela:    Angela Germano is currently an award-winning middle school Language Arts teacher, Communication professor, multi-faceted professional writer in the global medical and self-care sectors and produces inspirational documentaries. Hey there, I'm Angela Germano and today I am sharing what advice I would give my younger self, and friends, I've got tons!  Tune in to see if anything resonates with you.  And jump over to @everydayhappinesswithkatie on social and let's have a conversation!   Transcript   Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today I'm Angela Germano, and I'm taking over. So Katie asked me, what advice would you give your younger self? And I would have a lot to tell my younger self, like, tons.    For starters, always take the adventure. Don't pass up an opportunity just because of money. You know what? Honestly, my younger self is pretty smart, incredibly strong, and resilient. You know, maybe I need to shift my perspective here and have my younger self give me some advice for the me of today.   I give my youth a lot of credit. As a matter of fact, I give today's youth a huge shout out. There are so many incredibly smart young people paired with energy, philanthropy, and the entrepreneur spirit and the savviness of a global marketplace, and I'm just so impressed.   And I wish I could go back in time and be that confident. Sashaying onto cameras, jet setting on multiple airlines to work and then play in other countries, eloquently imposing deserved commands. I mean, the youth of today are seriously amazing. I want to be one.   So what would I tell my younger self? Well, be fearless. Explore all the parts. Be confident being you, because you're enough, all of you. The parts you're still figuring out, the parts you know, but may be afraid to show, all of it.   I would tell my younger self to just do it if you want. Don't be afraid of what society will think, what society may say. Just be the crazy, in love with life you, and it will all fall into place.   This all reminds me of my second published piece in Women Who Rise. That pretty much sums this lesson up. And I wrote it in 2020. But I wish I could go back and tell my 20 year old self. It was called Fear, Catapult, or Contain.   The choice is yours. Nobody else's. See you tomorrow for another episode. I'm here all week.   About Angela:    Angela Germano is currently an award-winning middle school Language Arts teacher, Communication professor, multi-faceted professional writer in the global medical and self-care sectors and produces inspirational documentaries. Hey there, I'm Angela Germano and today I am sharing one piece of advice I wish I had known on my happiness journey.  Tune in to find out.    Transcript   Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today I'm Angela Germano and I'm taking over. Katie asked me what is one piece of advice I wish I had known on my happiness journey?   Oh, that is a good question. An important question. A vital one, actually. So I am really happy that Katie asked me this, and I'm really honored to chat and share about it.   I actually wrote about it in a book. True story. Nineteen amazing women and myself had a book come out a month ago. A month or so ago, and it was called Leading with Legacy. We all had different interpretations of how to lead with legacy, even different definitions of legacy. That's kind of like the question Katie is asking, right?   First we have to define, what is happiness? Everyone has a different definition, a different understanding of happiness. I mean, happiness could look like a love affair, a family, a home, a bustling career, good health, a simple smile. So first we have to figure out what makes us happy.   So for me, happiness is being alive. I had a pretty tragic childhood with a lot of hardship and disease, abuse, loss and abandonment. It took being asked to be a part of Leading with Legacy for me to really formulate the key advice that I'm about to share.   Life threw a lot at me in my younger years, however, I somehow managed to be a straight A student, a big part of my school in sports, from class president to international thespian to forensics and debate champion, homecoming queen, so much in between. And I put myself through Monmouth University. I studied in London and I interned in Washington DC.   I graduated magna cum laude, I earned my masters, and now I'm on my way to earning my PhD so my two children can see that anything is possible with our superpower strength of choice. So what is the advice that I wish I had known sooner on my happiness journey? Well, I want to have a little fun here. I'm going to cite a part of my story in Leading with Legacy. Are you ready?   “Heart and throat, palms pulsing, eye twitching. Taste your dry mouth. See nothing. Do it, do it. The voice whispers, tongue the upper lip. Take a moment. Bite the lower lips softly. That was unexpected.focus. Come on now, let's go. Let us fall in love. But people are tricky. Lots of moving parts, unexplainable mind shifts, ever changing hearts. I want to fall in love. I want to love. I want a love. Comfort, security, confident love. Feel the smile from the inside kind of love. Laughter that calms. A few breaths and the world is more at peace, reliable, always there. Reassuring love. Wait. What's that I see? Let me readjust my lens. Oh, the perspective shifts. Drum roll, please.Say it. I am in love.”   Yes, there it is. Fall in love with life. That's the big advice I wish I'd known earlier. See you tomorrow for another episode. Hey there, I'm Angela Germano and today I am sharing the one episode of Everyday Happiness that has inspired me the most and how I used it in my classroom. I am a 6th grade Language Arts teacher after all.  Don't miss today's episode.    Transcript:   Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today, well, I'm Angela Germano and I'm taking over. Katie asked me if there were any episodes of Everyday Happiness that inspired me.   And wow, there have been many, like Intentional Margins®, her signature concept of making space for life so you don't get caught up and miss it all. That was totally inspirational to me and it drew me in. Then there's the one on making mindfulness work for you. Oh, I love that one. It's all about being present in the moment. I see a bit of a trend here.    But if I had to pick just one, well, you know, I think I'm going to go with gratitude glitter. Yes. Did you hear that one? Most inspirational episode of Everyday Happiness is the one on gratitude glitter. Yes. Gratitude glitter. 100%. That totally inspired me, and let me tell you how.   So, gratitude glitter is this concept of Katie's where she shares that gratitude can feel like little specks of glitter, but when you pile all those specs up, you have lots to be grateful for in your life. I loved this metaphor and really envisioned all that sparkle. I'm a very grateful person.   So, yeah, I was picturing huge mountainous regions sparkling of all of my appreciation. But this is why I'm shouting out gratitude glitter and making it rain glitter.   I teach 6th grade students and I used this concept in class the other day. We were taking our meditation moments like we do every day. And as we were about to embark on our writing assignment, I asked them to say positive affirmations in their mind. I shared with the students that their brain is listening to their voice. It's legit science. We are literally programming our minds for what we desire.   We're always saying what we want in this world. I said picture each bit of your positivity like glitter. You can barely see it. And then once you do, it sparkles. You know how glitter is. It's addictive. And yes, if you've ever been in a child's classroom, you know what I'm talking about.   Kids love glitter. Dash a little bit of glitter. You can't stop. Yes!  Kids love glitter and it gets everywhere. They love positivity, too. So that sparkle, those positive words about yourself. You just keep pouring it on and it cannot be missed. And you know glitter, even after you clean it up, you still find more, it's everywhere. Even better, you can't get rid of it.   That glitter. Those positive, encouraging words are everywhere. Seeping into your mind, programming it to be what you want. So turn to your neighbor and share your positive words. Sparkle that glitter and get it everywhere.    They are my love bugs, so they positively made it rain glitter. And I'm so grateful for Katie's episode about gratitude glitter. Very inspirational. See you tomorrow for another episode. Transcript Katie: Welcome to Everyday Happiness, where we create lasting happiness in about 2 minutes a day through my signature method of Intentional Margins®, (creating harmony between your to dos and your priorities),  happiness, science, and musings about life. I am kind of dying today on the inside because I get to chat with one of my friends, Angela Germano. She is a 6th grade teacher. She teaches English. I mean, can we just bless her for a moment? Oh my gosh, I can't even imagine 6th grade English. I just feel like smelly boys and girls passing notes. But anyway, she loves it and she does a really good job at it. She's also an author. And really, she just reminds me that when you show up, just show up big and live life to the fullest. And it's just so amazing when you get to surround yourself with the most incredible people. I'm so excited that you get a chance to get to know my friend Angela. Welcome to the show. Angela: Well, thank you so much for having me. This is super cool. Thank you. Katie: I am literally crawling out of my skin. I'm so excited to chat with you. So first off, why don't you start by telling the listeners if you remember how we met because it's kind of an interesting story. Angela: Oh my gosh, yes. Lots of dreams were coming true when I met you. Oh my goodness. It all started when I went to an event, precovid, right? So this was, I guess about three years ago now, and the event was called Dare to Dream. It was a beautiful, beautiful event put on by the amazing Kate Butler. And she had this event for all of her authors in her book series. New authors and authors that had been in a few books came together to celebrate ourselves and celebrate all of these new dreams. Hence the title Dare to Dream. And it was there that I met the beautiful Katie Jefcoat. Sparkled when you came in. That laugh. It's awesome. I fell in love.  Katie: It was really magical. And I can't remember exactly how your nickname happened, but it had something to do with thinking of the first thing that comes to mind, maybe, do you remember how it happened? Because I remember your nickname, I just don't remember how it happened.  Okay, tell me how it happened, because this was the most funny story. Angela:  Yeah, it was like, what word can best describe you? And everyone's going around the room, and I mean, the room is large. I would say we have what, like over 100 people there. Well over 100 or 200 people, probably. So you're going around and it's like, okay, what word best describes you? And of course, after you get through the first ten people, you get a lot of repeats and I didn't want to be repeated, competitive. And I'm a very unique person. I'm like, what could I possibly say that describes me? And it's getting closer and closer, and I had my word. I feel like it stuck because it works. And the word was can I say the word? Katie: Yes, please. Angela:  We say my nickname is not even my nickname, but it's so cool that everybody from that event refers to me, and it's beautiful. So, anyway, popcorn. Popcorn. That's what I think of with me, because not only do I have a very, like, popping kind of personality, but I really do live my life in the sense that, you know, I lost my mom when I was really young, and I know she wanted to live a lot longer. She was only in her thirties, and she always talked about getting to live longer, and unfortunately, she lost her battle, and we lost her early on. So I said, you know what? I'm living for my mom. That's what I'm doing. I want to give her a really good show while she's up there in heaven. I want to live out all those dreams that she had, maybe she told me about, but I want to do it all. So grab the popcorn and have a good time as you watch me go through life because I'm popping. Katie:  You know, I think about that analogy a lot, and I think about popcorn, as in, this is the show, indulge. Just be in it, just enjoy all of it. And then I think of popcorn as, like, kernels popping, and I think both kinds of analogies are very similar because you're like, oh, that's a great project. That's a great idea. That's a great charity, that's a great kid. Oh, let's make a sign for this. Let's do this and let's do that. And you're always popping all these ideas, all of this brilliance, all of this magic all the time, and so it's such an interesting way that word came to you, and it was absolutely perfect, and it completely sums you up 100%. Angela: Oh, my gosh, I love that. I'm so happy this is recorded because I'm going to listen to it whenever I'm having a down moment. That was just so beautiful. Thank you. Katie:  Oh, my gosh, so good. So tell us all the things that you're doing.  All the kernels that you're popping, because we already talked about you being an educator and an author and showing up for life. But you have a lot of interests and you have a lot of things that make you happy and you're really intentional about leaning in to the things that bring you the most happiness. So even today, you are doing something that was really fun and exciting and you have all of these things. Tell the listeners, all of the fun things so they can live vicariously through you and just get a sense of what this feels like to live fully. Angela: Oh my gosh, thanks. Well, much like popcorn, right? There's so much developing. When I was in college, I went for communication. And I love to chat, I love to meet people, I love to study people. I love the art of people, right? So I had this awesome opportunity to be an intern in Washington, DC. And I was able to not only intern in public relations, which was my background, but also I got to take some law classes. I was really into constitutional law and very passionate about social injustices. I loved learning about that. Fast forward now into the world that we're in. I'm constantly, always trying to help people, no matter who they are, where they're from. I just love helping people just to help them. And I think that's why I love being an educator. And sometimes people say, oh, you're a teacher, you're in the classroom. But my life does not stop there. That is just where it begins. Some really great news that just happened yesterday. And then of course, I was doing more fun stuff today, but yesterday I found out that three of the grants that I had written were approved. So I put in these multigrand grants so that my middle school students could have extra supplies to go after different passions. So there are three different projects. One is a selfie celebration, which it's all about celebrating these beautiful 6th graders. They come after school with their families. We have desserts, we roll out the red carpet, we make vision boards, we're doing yoga, we're doing meditation. We have gratitude journals and exercises that we do. It is phenomenal for the students and then the parents. You know, I teach 6th grade, so it's a transitional year in our school. It's their first year of middle school. These parents need support. So a beautiful thing happens not only for the children, but the parents are all gathered there as well celebrating their children, but also start to bond with this new support system of their parents. It's fantastic. And I did it before. It was always a success, but every year you wonder, am I going to get that grant money again? And I did. So I'm completely stoked and very, very grateful that the Toms River, which is the town where we live, the Toms River Education Association, which is part of New Jersey Education Association, approved that grant. So now we get to have a selfie celebration. The kids love it.  And then the second grant that was approved is called Language Arts for a Cause. And this again, celebrating ourselves. This is all about English class. Sometimes teachers tell you what to read. That's not how I roll in my class. I'm very big on student voice and student choice. And in Language Arts for a Cause, the students can research anything they want to and then they take the power that's within them. So whatever skills, strategies, whatever craft they want to make in order to promote the cause, perhaps they're really good artists and they want to make some art and then sell the art and then the money can go towards that cause. So language arts for a cause. It's amazing. The parents come in and they learn all about these different causes that are near and dear to the students, which is a big deal because sometimes parents, we're doing our own thing and sometimes we forget to make time for our children and listen to what is really important to them. So a beautiful thing that happens during this event is the parents can actually see what's important to their child and also to their friend group, and they start to see things through their eyes, the shared perspective. So it's beautiful all around. And so I was really happy, really happy that Language Arts for a Cause got approved. That's a big one for me because it's kind of like our little entrepreneurs, they're building their nonprofit businesses and combining their smarts with their heart and getting the word out there, back to communication again. So I love that. And then the third one, this is a family book club. And that's kind of what we were just chatting about before we came on live, a family book club. It's for social, emotional needs. So the students select books that they want to read that are important to them. Usually they're nonfiction and we get enough copies for them and their family to read together and have some really important conversations that are eye opening, that are supportive, that their family needs. Sometimes the students are looking out for themselves. Sometimes they're looking out for their family and trying to find books that they want mom and dad or their grandma to read with them for a reason. So we kind of gave them an outlet to bond with their family. So I was really excited that those three grants got approved. And it brings it all together, what I do in the classroom and what I did when I was in college. And as a communication expert, it brings it all together. So very, very fortunate that some of my things were popping yesterday. And then today we were reading to the YMCA program at our local elementary school. I took my book club of middle schoolers and we went to the elementary school children and they had a blast. Katie:  Oh, my gosh, I bet they had so much fun. love it so much. And I can't wait for you to dive in all week long and talk with the listeners about all of your goodness. Because let me just tell you, friends, it is just getting started. Angela is coming in hot, hot, hot. And there's so much goodness for you to learn. So all of her links and all of the fun stuff she does will, of course, be in the show notes and you'll be able to follow her and really see what's happening.  But until next time, remember, kindness is contagious. In this episode, Physical Therapist and Advocate Dr. Mercedes Aguirre Valenzuela, PT, DPT, talks about advocacy in physical therapy. Today, Dr Valenzuela talks about the different types of advocacy and the latest updates in advocacy. How is grassroots advocacy different than lobbying? Hear about APTA advocacy, making a difference as one person, and get Mercedes' advice to her younger self, all on today's episode of The Healthy, Wealthy & Smart Podcast.   Key Takeaways Three types of advocacy: Self-advocacy. Advocating for yourself. Individual advocacy. Advocating for someone else. Systems advocacy. Advocating for changing policies, laws, and rules. “You don't have to be a member of a certain group in order to send an email or make a phone call.” “Don't feel like you have to start on your own.” “You can really make a difference, even as one person.” “Get used to making mistakes, not being perfect. It's all part of learning.”   More about Dr. Mercedes Aguirre Valenzuela Dr. Aguirre Valenzuela received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Rutgers School of Health Professions in 2020. Her dedication to professional advocacy has led her to leadership roles in the APTA on a National and State level. She was selected to serve as an APTA Board-sponsored Centennial Scholar and worked on the APTA “PT Moves Me” national campaign. In 2022, she began her term in the public policy and advocacy committee (PPAC) and CSM Steering Group. Within the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy, she is an active member and was elected to be in the Nominating Committee. In the state of New Jersey, she is an APTA Delegate as well as a Key Contact in her district. Clinically, she currently works in the early-intervention and school-based settings. Outside of the clinic setting, she uses social media to educate PTs/PTAs/students on how to advocate for their profession and encourage them to run for office.   Suggested Keywords Healthy, Wealthy, Smart, Physiotherapy, Advocacy, Lobbying, Legislation, APTA, Representatives, Interventions,   Resources Our Experiences Matter When it Comes To Advocacy APTA Patient Action Center   To learn more, follow Dr. Valenzuela at: LinkedIn:         Mercedes Aguirre Valenzuela Instagram:       @theptadvocate   Subscribe to Healthy, Wealthy & Smart: Website:                      https://podcast.healthywealthysmart.com Apple Podcasts:          https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/healthy-wealthy-smart/id532717264 Spotify:                        https://open.spotify.com/show/6ELmKwE4mSZXBB8TiQvp73 SoundCloud:               https://soundcloud.com/healthywealthysmart Stitcher:                       https://www.stitcher.com/show/healthy-wealthy-smart iHeart Radio:               https://www.iheart.com/podcast/263-healthy-wealthy-smart-27628927   Read the Full Transcript Here: 00:00 Hi, Mercedes, welcome to the podcast, I am happy to have you on and to see you again.   00:06 Nice to be here. Thank you for having me. Yes. And today we're gonna be talking about advocacy, which, in physical therapy, which I have spoken about with a lot of different people over the years. And I think it's great to get different perspectives on advocacy, especially from younger therapists, because I think it's great that you guys get involved. So my first question to you is, how did you get involved into an advocacy work for the profession? And why is it important to you?   00:37 So I graduated in 2020.   00:43 I was very even before I started PT, school, I was very into politics, legislation and public policy.   00:53 And then once I went into PT, school, I never learned about what the abt does in terms of advocacy, I felt like he kind of mesh, kind of like the two things that are really impassionate about and enjoy. And so I became more involved as a student. And then once I graduated, I wanted to create   01:16 content that was related to advocacy and explained in a very simple way. What are like the current updates going on right now? Because I feel like legislation, can we, it can be a bit intimidating for people to understand and to really get into. And I wanted to show people, what are the updates without all these extra details that they don't really want.   01:46 And that's what I've been doing thus far. And it's been really a great learning experience. When we talk about advocacy, I think that there are a couple of different types of advocacy. So could you go into a little bit more detail on the different types of advocacy, especially in the PT world?   02:09 Yeah, you're correct. So there are several definitions of advocacy.   02:16 I can just give you three of them. So number one, is self advocacy. So advocating for yourself, for example, you're advocating for a pay raise or a change in work conditions. There's individual advocacy, so advocating for someone else, for example, sending out a letter to your patient's insurance company in order to get more PT visits. Then there is systems advocacy, which is my personal favorite. And it's about changing policies, laws, rules, and how they can impact multiple people's lives. And that is more targeted at a local state or even national level.   03:05 And when you're talking about systems advocacy, is that when you know we as physical therapists, ourselves, and maybe encourage our patients to send a letter to CMS or send a letter to your Senator, advocating for whether it be you know, the stock, the Medicare cap, that was a number of years ago, things like that.   03:26 Yes. So what are you are describing right now is a grassroots movements.   03:34 So, grassroots movement is similar to how the way grass grows from the bottom up. So we are the grassroots advocates, we are at the bottom we are what legislators call constituents meeting, someone who can vote.   03:53 And we advocate for things that affect the top so the top is like policy, law, etc.   04:03 And the APTA has grassroots movements. For example, as I mentioned before with CMS, it was the hashtag fight the cut movement, which was one of them. And there are examples of different types of movements in grassroots, such as me to or love wins, black lives matter. So that's kind of how grassroots advocacy works. How is that different than lobbying? So how does that work if you can compare and contrast the two?   04:35 Sure. Let me explain what a lobbyists first perfect, though a good start. So a lobbyist is someone whose job is to build relationships and network with legislators and their staff. And that lobbyists represents an Oregon   05:00 datian So the APTA hires lobbyists. And their job is to advocate for us, they don't have to be physical therapists themselves. But we can also do the acts of lobbying, such as making phone calls to a legislator, sending emails, even having meetings.   05:24 But it's not like our job because you know, we have our own stuff to do.   05:30 Right, exactly, exactly. So you can be part of a grassroots advocacy effort, and then kind of take that into the act of lobbying not as a professional lobbyists, like you said, but like, for example, when a PTA and I know the private practice section will do this, will have groups of physical therapists go to meet with their lawmakers from their state on Capitol Hill, and also individual states will have lobby day within the state. Yes, correct.   06:08 And you don't have to be a member of a certain group and whatnot, in order to send an email write a phone call is really what you want to see change personally, or even like a small group of people don't ever feel like you have to like be a part of something big. Like, it's about what you are passionate and care about. Right. So if you're not part of the APTA you can still lobby on behalf of patients. Is that correct? Yes, I wouldn't call it necessary lobbying, but like advocating, advocating, like, you can still send a phone call, Hey, I had this patient experience and I want you to know about this and be aware about this. There's going to be a one this change in my practice, ag whatever like your state is advocating for you can still do that without being a member. Right. And how do we know as physical therapists? What is on legislative agendas, let's say for the APTA Is there a tool we can use to find out what's going on? Yes. So the APTA has an advocacy network, and you can join, it sends a newsletter,   07:29 every month, every couple of months, you can also visit that abt patient Action Center, which they have pre written emails that you can send out to your legislators, and you don't have to be a member in order to do those things. Great. So the APTA patient Action Center, and there's an app for that, right? Yes, there is a PT,   07:57 advocacy app that you can use, and you can also go on your browser as well. Right, right. So I think the big takeaways from there is there, there is an app for that.   08:10 Or, or you can go online, and you can find sort of pre written letters and things that you can send off to your senators or your congress people, whether that be at the federal or the state level. And you don't have to be an APTA member in order to have access to that. Yes, perfect, perfect. Okay, what are our current advocacy updates? What's on the table? What's on the line? What do we need to know? So for the last couple of Congresses,   08:47 there has been a bill that has been introduced called the Allied workforce diversity Act, which helps in recruiting a more diverse allied health workforce, as well as retaining those students and   09:07 just increasing the graduation rate as well, because sometimes you get these students in these programs, but they don't graduate. So that's the goal of that bill. It has not passed in the last couple of Congresses, but it was that bill was merged. Like the right the wording of it was merged into a pandemic bill, which has a high very high probability of passing. So that has been great news. That bill is called the prevent pandemics act.   09:43 And it's just to modernize the country's pandemic response, and they felt that workforce diversity was really important in it. So that's   09:56 that that's pretty huge since it was, has been a battle   10:00 To get this bill to pass for the last couple of Congresses, another one, if you're in pediatrics going to try to diversify these updates.   10:11 So there is a bill called the specialized instructional support personal services act.   10:21 You can also find it as a gross gross CIPS Act, as well, they call it hr 7219.   10:30 So this bill is going to create grant program, a Department of Education to increase partnerships between school districts and colleges to train specialized instruction support personnel. So PTS are included as that type of personnel, as well as PTAs. And they, and this is great, because, um, I was I worked at a school based physical therapist, and there is such a need for more therapists, so I could understand why they wanted to kind of increase, have more of a network between programs and school districts in order to retain the therapists.   11:17 Especially I,   11:21 you know, I saw, we're going to school way therapists, but like, I just always get emails all the time, like, we need therapists, we need therapists. And, you know, there's some kids that like I can't even see, even in the same school. So   11:34 very important for you school, PTs and PTAs. Out there, there is also a pelvic health bill that has been introduced. So moving on to pelvic health, the purpose of this bill is to educate and train health professionals on the benefits of pelvic floor physical therapy.   12:00 I think that's such a huge thing for pelvic health therapists is just a lot of people that don't know what it is. And you know, patients that go to their physicians for answers, they don't provide them the enough guidance, because they don't know that that help is out there.   12:20 So they'll be great. And the bill will also help to educate postpartum women on the importance of pelvic floor examinations and physical therapy.   12:33 And what it is and how to obtain a pelvic physical therapy examination, which would help increase access. And this bill was actually worked by representatives from a BT pelvic health, which is pretty amazing that, you know, Pts helped in creating this bill.   12:57 Yeah, and that was introduced into the house already are in committee. It was introduced, like into the house. Yep. Fabulous. Yeah. Anything else on the legislative docket? I can talk about a federal agency. Yeah, go for it. Update from the NIH. Okay. So the ABA is part of the disability rehab research coalition. And they some, which is occupational therapists are part of it, a lot of associations are a part of it. And they submitted a comment to the NIH requesting them to consider designating people with disabilities as a health disparity population, which I didn't think that they weren't. So I was really surprised by that. And this is just so important, because for the purposes of federal research, for this minority group, and it will develop and inform critical policy solutions to reduce and eliminate health disparities for people with disabilities. So I don't know the current update, but it is great that it is being brought up at this time. Perfect. All right, so we've got allied workforce diversity act. We've got the HR hr 7219, which was for school based PTS, and that was a really, really long   14:29 name for that bill. Yeah. And then we've got the pelvic health bill. So all those those three bills plus an update from the NIH. And if people go to the advocacy APTA PT Action Center, they should be able to find more information on that on those bills and how to contact their Congress person, correct?   14:56 Yes, perfect. So   14:59 in turn   15:00 terms of like federal agencies, if you're talking about the CDC, NIH, that's not necessarily something you just send an email to.   15:09 But for other legislations, yes, you can find pre written emails in regards to that. Excellent. All right. Well, that is a great overview of where we are right now. And current current advocacy updates. Thank you so much. Now, next question. What advice do you have for students and younger physical therapists, new career physical therapists who might want to get into advocacy? But maybe they feel like, Oh, I just don't know enough? Or I'm too new. What do you say to that?   15:43 Well, I will say contact me because I love   15:48 going to students sake meetings at different states and talking about advocacy, I have been to a few SEC meeting, so contact me and I will gladly, you know, present and help you guys out in any way possible. But also, when I was a student, I was really interested in to advocacy. And there wasn't much going on around in my program student lead wise. So I contacted my trusted professor, which is someone that I looked at as a mentor, and they really helped and guided me. So don't feel like going to have to start on your own, you know, find a professor that you trust and you feel is kind of already involved in advocacy in some level.   16:37 And they will help you out as well. Perfect. And who was that professor for you? Let's give them a shout out. It was Dr. Mike Rella. Ah,   16:48 yes, yeah. She just retired, right? Yes, he did. Yeah, that's a loss for sure. Yeah. But yeah, she really helped me out a lot. Oh, amazing. Yeah, she's a nice, she's a nice lady, for sure. Well, it's great that you had that professor to help guide you. And I think that's great advice for students and, and new graduates is reach out to those professors, because they, they can really help to guide you through advocacy, and through a whole bunch of other things as well. And they can also follow you on social media. Right. So what is your what is your social media handle? And where can people find you? At the PT advocate? Perfect, and that's on on Instagram? Perfect. That's the gram. Just the gram for now. That is great. And is that the best way for people to reach out to you they can just slide into your DM. Vic about advocacy only please?   17:48 Yes, or piece, you know, yeah, yeah, or pediatric care. Perfect. Perfect. All right. So what do you want people to take away from this conversation? If you can kind of distill it down to a couple of points? What would that be? I know, sometimes we can feel that we're just one person, one change can we make? And I know I feel that way. Sometimes too. Even though I have this advocacy, Instagram, sometimes I'm just like, all the stuff that's going on in the world's I walk in Mercedes do what can I even do about this, but you can really make a difference even as one person, that phone call that email that you send, even just reading about it and being aware and talking to colleagues about it or your patients about it, increasing a word that awareness of that can still be great and can still make a change. Don't feel like you are alone. There's a whole Association backing you up in this, and it's all for, you know, to progress our profession. So don't feel alone. And don't feel that like you can't not make a change because you can and your voice is really important. I love it. And last question, it's when I ask everyone, knowing where you are now in your life and your career. What advice would you give to your younger self? I would say get used to making mistakes not being perfect.   19:21 Because when I was a student everytime made a mistake, I was like, oh proceeds How could you do that? That's horrible scar for life. And as a new grad, I make a mistake every other day, every day. So just get used to it saltwater learning. Yeah, and I can say as someone who's been out for over 20 years, I make mistakes every day, too. Yeah. So it's never it's never ending we'll have mistakes and that's okay. Because like you said, you'll constantly learn from them. Thank you so much, Mercedes, for coming on and talking about advocacy. I love your passion. And I think it's great to see new graduates out there and making a difference. So thank you for that. And thank you for coming on. Thank you   20:00 for having me. My pleasure, everyone. Thanks so much for tuning in. Have a great couple of days and stay healthy, wealthy and smart.   20:13 Thanks for listening.
