The Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education. Peter Berkowitz (Hoover Institution Fellow and educator) discusses the Trump administration's "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education," which requires universities to meet ten priorities to qualify for federal benefits like student loans and research grants. While many goals are proper or already legally required (like protecting free speech and obeying civil rights laws), several are highly controversial. These controversial points include demanding that hiring decisions be made solely on individual "merit," which critics redefine to include group diversity, and requiring universities to maintain institutional neutrality on political issues. Most universities rejected the compact, asserting it would impair academic freedom. Berkowitz suggests the administration should use direct financial incentives to reward universities that actively teach free speech, rather than relying on mandates. 1913 Princeton

SHOW 11-5-25 CBS EYE ON THE WORLD WITH JOHN BATCHELOR THE SHOW BEGINS IN THE DOUBTS ABOUT AI AND CHILDREN. FIRST HOUR 9-915 Canada's Troubled Relations with China and the US. Charles Burton (author of The Beaver and the Dragon) analyzes Canadian Prime Minister Carney's meeting with China's Xi Jinping following the APEC conference. Burton described Carney as a "supplicant" who echoed Chinese rhetoric of "constructive and pragmatic interactions," which means focusing on trade while avoiding criticism. Issues discussed included Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola and Canada's tariffs on subsidized Chinese EVs. Burton addresses the severely strained Ottawa-Washington relationship due to US tariffs and President Trump's stated unwillingness to talk, feeding "anti-American sentiment" in Canada. This trade uncertainty is a factor in Canada's massive budget deficit, which aims to fund government infrastructure to compensate for lacking investor interest. Furthermore, concerns persist in Canada regarding Chinese EVs potentially functioning as "listening posts" for state security. 915-930 Canada's Troubled Relations with China and the US. SECOND HOUR 10-1015 US-China Ceasefire and Competition in Technology and Space. Jack Burnham (Foundation for Defense of Democracies research analyst) characterizes the Trump-Xi meeting as a necessary "truce" that allows both nations to gain stability and strengthen their positions before the next escalation. Regarding rare earths, China is now employing the US "playbook," setting up a licensing structure rather than a full trade cessation. He emphasizes that building a complete rare earth supply chain outside of China, especially refining capacity, may realistically take seven to ten years. In technology, Beijing is pushing for domestic self-sufficiency in AI infrastructure, partly driven by paranoia that imported chips may contain backdoors or vulnerabilities. Burnham also details China's commitment to militarizing space, including copying US reconnaissance capabilities and practicing anti-satellite operations like "dogfighting." 1015-1030 US-China Ceasefire and Competition in Technology and Space. Spencer Klavan (Associate Editor of the Claremont Review of Books) reviews Michael M. Rosen's book, Like Silicon from Clay, which uses ancient Jewish wisdom, specifically the Golem legend, to analyze AI. Rosen categorizes AI believers into four camps: autonomists (who believe AI will achieve consciousness or sentience) and automationists (who view AI as a sophisticated, non-conscious tool). Both camps are divided into "positive" (optimistic) and "negative" (pessimistic) outlooks. Klavan identifies as a positive automationist, seeing AI as an "elaborate adding machine" or "better Google" that is helpful but requires human verification because it often "hallucinates" (makes up facts). He notes that chatbots conclude conversations with questions because they need human input to avoid becoming "deranged" and to improve their ability to predict human speech patterns. 1045-1100 AI Philosophy and Jewish Wisdom. THIRD HOUR 1100-1115 US Military Operations off Venezuela and the War in Ukraine. General Blaine Holt (United States Air Force retired) analyzes the significant US military buildup off Venezuela, headquartered at Roosevelt Roads, describing it as a "war-winning force" primarily targeting cartels and sending a global message of American might. He suggests that operations will likely use commando-style tactics rather than a full occupation, potentially leveraging historical events like the Bay of Pigs as cover for unconventional approaches. The conversation pivots to Ukraine, where Russia is effectively using new glide bombs and missiles, having shifted to a wartime mobilization economy. Holt notes the profound erosion of Ukraine's infrastructure and the demoralizing lack of manpower. He argues innovative, inexpensive defenses, such as Reaper drones with Sidewinders or lasers, are needed, as current air defense economics are unsustainable. 1115-1130 US Military Operations off Venezuela and the War in Ukraine. Alex Pollock (Senior Fellow at the Mises Institute) discusses Kenneth Rogoff's book, Our Currency, Your Problem, focusing on why the US dollar remains the dominant global currency. The dollar's strength is linked to US military power and superior legal and bankruptcy systems, which provide essential "social infrastructure." Pollock recalls the famous quip, "Our currency, your problem," made by Treasury Secretary John Connally in 1971 after the US defaulted on its gold obligations under the Bretton Woods system. Challenges from the Chinese renminbi and crypto are noted, but Rogoff finds serious institutional flaws in China's system. Critically, the growing US national debt is identified as the dollar's "Achilles heel," posing a major threat if global lenders stop lending. 1145-1200 The Dominance of the US Dollar and Its Challenges. VAST's larger planned station, Haven 2, is designed to rotate, creating artificial gravity. This capability is crucial for mitigating the damage extended weightlessness causes the human body, such as cardiovascular weakening, bone density loss, and vision problems (the eye flattens). Zimmerman notes the ongoing debate over NASA's Artemis program, where former administrators clash over SpaceX's ability to build the lunar lander on time, often driven by lobbying interests. He also reports that China recently set a new national record for successful launches in a single year (67 completed). 1245-100 AM Private Space Enterprise, Artemis Debate, and the Human Body in Space. The Trump administration's "Compact for Academic Excellence" faces near-universal rejection from the nation's leading universities, even as the White House continues to look for takers. Hosts Mushtaq Gunja, Jon Fansmith, and Sarah Spreitzer unpack why the compact's demands are legally shaky and practically unworkable. Then they turn to UVA's separate civil rights settlement, what it signals for Title VI enforcement, and how DOJ's growing role is reshaping oversight. Also in this episode: the shutdown that isn't shutting down, deep cuts to the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights and TRIO programs, and the new $100,000 H-1B visa fee. In two weeks, millions of Americans will be voting — but a Supreme Court case could change elections as we know them. Last week, the court heard arguments in Louisiana vs. Callais, a case that centers on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Basically, the court is deciding whether or not states can use race to draw voting maps — and depending on what it decides, it could give Republicans the ability to eliminate at least six majority-minority districts and land about a dozen more seats in the House of Representatives. So we spoke to Stacey Abrams about the court's deliberations. She's the Host of Crooked Media's Assembly Required and a New York Times Bestselling Author. What happens when universities refuse to tie their funding to political ideology? Several schools, including the University of Arizona and Vanderbilt, have rejected the Trump administration's “Compact for Academic Excellence,” which links federal money to promoting “patriotism” and limiting DEI programs. Their refusal underscores a growing clash between academic freedom and government influence. (Source: The Guardian)
The Trump administration has cut federal funding to colleges and universities it says don't align with conservative priorities. And now, the White House says it will reward schools that follow in its ideological footsteps.Earlier this month, the administration sent a list of demands to nine schools. Officials are calling it the “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” Its stipulations include ending considerations of race and sex in admissions and hiring, capping international student enrollment, and limiting what faculty can say about certain issues.Five institutions — Brown University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Southern California, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Virginia — have rejected the proposal. The others have yet to comment.Trump's compact is the latest chapter in the story of how his administration is trying to exert influence over higher education. In March, the White House canceled $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University over allegations of antisemitism. In this edition of “If You Can Keep It,” our weekly series on the state of democracy, we talk about higher education and what's at stake if academic freedom is compromised.Find more of our programs online. How does former President Trump plan to “fix” U.S. colleges? He unveiled a higher education reform aimed at removing what he calls “woke, socialist, and anti-American” ideologies while promoting merit-based admissions, free speech, and affordability. The plan also targets discriminatory policies, foreign influence, and DEI programs to foster what he describes as a “Golden Age of Academic Excellence.” (Source: NDTV)

What will happen if California universities agree to the Trump administration's new “Compact for Academic Excellence”? State leaders have warned they'll cut funding to any campus that accepts the deal, arguing it threatens academic freedom and state control over admissions and curriculum. The move sets up a major clash between California and federal officials over who directs higher education policy.

What would happen if universities had to follow government ideology to receive funding? The Trump administration's proposed “Compact for Academic Excellence” offers federal money to nine colleges if they adopt policies like tuition freezes, limits on international students, and bans on race- or sex-based admissions. Critics warn it threatens academic freedom by tying financial support to political compliance.
It's called the “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” It is anything but. It asks the schools who received Wednesday's letter to give up their academic freedom and adopt the right-wing partisan platform on education in exchange for preferred access to federal funding. Of course, the document points out (as it must) that “institutions of higher education are free to develop models and values other than those” in the memo, if the institution elects to forgo federal benefits. Up until now, the administration has used the stick — denying federal funds to those universities that refuse his unconstitutional demands...Article Link

What is the Trump administration proposing to reshape U.S. universities? It has invited nine major schools, including MIT and Brown, to sign a “Compact for Academic Excellence,” offering federal funding in exchange for frozen tuition, limits on international students, standardized testing, and alignment with the administration's gender definitions. Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
In 1973, three young lawyers founded Heenan Blaikie in Montreal, which grew to be a prominent Canadian law firm with notable members, including former political leaders. Despite its close-knit atmosphere, the firm faced significant internal issues, leading to its collapse in 2014. Adam Dodek, an impartial observer, examines the firm's rise and fall, highlighting its unique culture alongside underlying problems like workplace bullying, challenges for women and minorities, and sexual harassment. The narrative is contextualized within broader societal changes, including economic shifts and crises. Dodek's thorough investigation serves as an essential read for legal professionals and those interested in the dynamics of corporate failure. Adam Dodek is a professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. Among his numerous publications are In Search of the Ethical Lawyer; The Canadian Constitution, Third Edition, named by the Hill Times as one of the top 100 books on Canadian public policy; and Solicitor-Client Privilege, which won the Walter Owen Book Prize. He is a recipient of the Canadian Association of Law Teachers Prize for Academic Excellence, the Mundell Medal for excellence in legal writing, and the Law Society of Ontario's Law Society Medal. He is also a director of the Canadian Association for Legal Ethics and the Canadian Legal Information Institute, and a past governor of the Law Commission of Ontario. Judy has some feedback for you In this episode, we have another certified veterinary practice manager and improv afficianado, Judith Asséo. (But you can call her Judy.) Judy has a life long love of helping animals and people, which has led to a career in veterinary medicine. She is currently the Senior Director of Operations at Western Veterinary Partners. At the same time, she has been an improv performer for over 30 years and performs regularly in San Francisco as part of the Secret Improv Society. How much has improv influenced her career managing people? A lot? Are veterinarians challenging to work with as a group? Maybe. Are veterinary specialists special, but maybe not in a good way? I think we are. I loved meeting Judy and I know you will too. She is like a hot cup of tea on a cold day. Liz Allen Buries the Lede Our season 5 closer is a real treat! We have an incredible guest, Liz Allen, improv performer, director, coach, teacher and guru Liz Allen. Liz has performed and coached improv for 32 years! She works primarily out of iO in Chicago, (This is a big deal people!) but she has performed and coached improv all over the world, notably at the Edinburgh Fringe and, oh, by the way, she coached The Commune, the improv ensemble in Mike Birbiglia's 2016 feature film Don't Think Twice, NBD. (This actually blows Sarah's mind as Mike Birbiglia is her fave comedian.) Recently, Liz has been delving into solo show writing and performance, she recently performed her first solo show, Tonight I Am My Mother, and is completing her next solo show, There Were Signs, about her years in Las Vegas with her husband and their offspring. This is how Sarah met Liz, on an online solo show class with The Barrow Group, which is one good thing we can say about the pandemic. Okay, she sounds amazing, but how does she end up as a guest on Comedicine? Well, before discovering improv, Liz was a mechanical engineer! What? She worked for fifteen years as a consulting engineer and pharmaceutical technical writer. One night, on a lark, she joined some friends seeing a show at The Second City in downtown Chicago…and Liz got bit by improv. Do engineering and improv mesh? In this episode of ITR Live, Chris Hagenow is joined by David Hoyt, Executive Director of School Board for Academic Excellence, to announce the launch of IowaReportCard.org, a powerful new data transparency tool built to assess the performance and spending of public schools across Iowa.Chris and David walk through how the report card platform gives parents, taxpayers, and school board members the information they need to make informed decisions about student outcomes, district spending, graduation rates, literacy scores, ACT results, and instructional vs. non-instructional expenses. Built on the successful model of ITR Local, this new tool aims to make school-level accountability just as accessible and visual as city and county budget transparency. They explore how districts vary—rural vs. suburban, high-growth vs. high-need—and why having a common, accessible data platform allows users to compare apples to apples across the state. Hoyt explains that this may be the most user-friendly and comprehensive school performance tool in the nation, noting its usefulness for school board candidates, current officials, and any citizen looking to improve education outcomes without blindly increasing spending. The episode also addresses common education myths—like the assumption that more spending guarantees better results—and reveals real Iowa examples where high performance comes from tight, efficient budgets. The conversation ends with a discussion on future education reforms, including the Science of Reading, and the need for public schools to adopt best practices from charter and ESA-participating schools.
