Join Smilin' Jay McDowell, guitar-player-turned-upright bassist from the small town of West Lafayette, Indiana, as he takes you on his journey from watching and playing in bands in the back room at Lucy's to traveling the world with BR5-49. If you lived in Nashville in the 90s and loved live music you may have known about the punk scene at Lucy's, but you definitely knew about the resurgence of hillbilly and western swing played in the seedy honky tonks on Lower Broad. Jay felt equally at home in both places. Some nights he'd hang out and watch bands at Lucy's or play a gig there with the band Hellbilly. Other nights he'd go downtown to drink cheap beer and watch Greg Garing, Paul Burch, Tim Carroll, or BR5-49 play at Tootsie's or Robert's Western Wear. When he was asked to join BR5-49 he jumped at the chance (it may have been the liquor talking), switching his primary instrument from guitar to stand-up bass and adding some additional style and substance to a band already bursting with it. Jay's tales include his favorite shows at Lucy's, what the scene was like on Lower Broad both pre- and post-BR5-49, chatting with Keith Richards and John Fogerty, touring with Bob Dylan, and what it was like when ALL the record companies came a-callin'. Smilin' Jay McDowell heads the video department at The Musicians Hall of Fame in  Nashville, TN, which opened to bring attention to studio and road musicians who play a vital role in the creation of music but rarely get the attention they deserve. He even has his own well-deserved exhibit in the museum celebrating his work as a session bass player with artists such as Marty Stuart, Dierks Bentley, The Black Crowes, Alan Jackson, Levon Helm, The Crickets and BR5-49. Go see it. This episode is dedicated to John Van Etten (1966-1995), Timothy White (1952-2002), and Jim Bessman (1952-2021). Cadences are used by soldiers during marching or running maneuvers. They are sometimes called “jody calls” or “jodies”, after Jody, a recurring character who figures in many traditional cadences; Jody refers to the man with whom a serviceman's wife/girlfriend cheats while he is deployed. After years of playing upright bass for cult country act BR5-49, Jay McDowell stumbled into a dream job for any music geek: Multimedia Archivist for Nashville's Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, established in 2006. From the actual drumkit Santana's Michael Shrieve played at Woodstock to the original lathe used to cut Elvis Presley's first recording to hand-written lyrics from some of the greatest songwriters ever, the MHFM is a literal treasure trove of artifacts and memorabilia that speaks both to the brilliance of music's biggest stars as well as the ingenuity of those behind the scenes. To Jay's end, he wears many hats day-to-day, whether giving private tours to everyone from school kids to the musicians themselves who are being honored, on top of video production, archival research and assisting with the presentation of specific exhibits. On today's program, recorded at the Russell Hotel in Nashville, Jay speaks to his own history with vinyl, how historical context can morph a good song into a classic, why we continue to absorb and collect music even though it's impossible to hear everything, and he shares plenty of stories behind some of the MHFM's coolest acquisitions and inductions, involving Elvis Presley, Velma Smith, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan. Twelve Songs of Christmas

Americana artist Chuck Mead loves Christmas music and has performed and recorded it on his own and with the band that got him in the public eye, BR5-49. In today's conversation, he talks about getting a chance during one of those periods when country music labels signed country traditionalists, only to discover that radio and audiences wanted whatever's current more. Still, Mead's love of Christmas music has professionally come in short bursts for him. A single here, a compilation track there. As a songwriter, he thinks he has said all he has to say in "The Happy Holiday Song" and doesn't see himself doing an album of other people's songs or writing an album's worth for himself.  Still, the Christmas tracks he has been involved with have all been interesting including his South Texas rock steady cover of Eddy Arnold's "Will Santa Come to Shanty Town," an idea that came to him from via his A&R man on the project, Cheetah Crome from punk band The Dead Boys. The experience inspired the track "I'm Not the Man for the Job" for Mead's most recent album, Close to Home. For the album, Mead recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Studio, continuing his run through legendary roots music recording studios. Memphis isn't obvious in the album's sound, but the choice made sense because Mead served as musical director for the Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet--a story based on Memphis Sun Studios' legends Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins.  In our conversation, we talk about BR5-49 performing a cover of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen's "Daddy's Drinking Our Christmas Away" with Marty Stuart on an episode of The Marty Stuart Show. For the episode, I cut the conversation before the song. Here's the clip in its entirety.  For more on Chuck Mead, you can visit him at his website and his Facebook page, and you can get Close to Home, his previous albums and merch from his website's store. If you have comments, suggestions or favorite Christmas songs, you can find me at the 12 Songs homepage and Facebook page.

The New Reality: Trump pulls ahead of Hillary in several polls, as he literally runs rings around his stationary opponent. Trump holds multiple full-house rallies, takes a constructive trip to Mexico, delivers a phenomenal speech on immigration, and visits a black church in Detroit. Meanwhile, we're still asking, Where's Hillary? Also, rapper Sean "P.Diddy" Combs says he feels "almost hurt" that Hillary Clinton is not directly addressing "the black community." Is a window opening for Donald Trump's GOP? With Listener Calls and Labor Day Music via the Beatles, R.E.M., BR5-49, Snoop Dogg and 2pac.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Double Standards in Louisiana. A "presidential" Donald Trump visits flood-ravaged Baton Rouge, unloads relief supplies and comforts the displaced. Meanwhile, many miles away on Martha's Vineyard, Hillary Clinton attends a lavish birthday party and President Obama plays yet another round of golf. Unbelievably Bad Optics for Democrats. We measure contrasting media-manufactured "narratives" vis-a-vis Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the current natural disaster in Baton Rouge. We sample 2007 audio clips wherein both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama assail former President George W. Bush for his high-altitude handling of Katrina. In light of Hillary & Obama's present absenteeism, we contemplate the depths of their hypocrisy. For historical perspective we survey Douglas Brinkley's scholarly chronicle of Katrina: The Great Deluge. Meanwhile, Trump pulls ahead nationally in the latest LAT/USC polls and Hillary unleashes an absurd "Colin Powell Defense" of her email improprieties. Kevn Kinney explains to Rob and Seth the improvisational spirit behind, and each week's theme of the, “Kevn Kinney Auto Shop and Magic Show” - his ambitious five-night residency which takes place at City Winery in Atlanta August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 (every Tuesday). Kinney sits with his guitar, sometimes breaking into song while offering wisdom with regard to why musicians shouldn’t watch themselves on stage, how the popularity of vinyl has actually made It harder for many artists to release music on vinyl, fan behavior, his Best Of Songs release and the four separately-themed EPs from which it was culled, the project he is working on with BR5-49 co-founder Chuck Mead, performing in Europe, the evils of addiction, the Drivn’ n Cryin’ documentary “Scarred But Smarter,” why musicians should learn musical history, the danger of credit cards, appreciating and respecting our returning soldiers, the horrors of cabbage patch birth, Atlanta’s Ferris wheel and more. He also offers a li’l taste of his hit “Straight To Hell,” done reggae style, and demonstrates his various approaches to “Scarred But Smarter” and “Fly Me Courageous,” and performs other Kinney gems in their entirety. Closing music includes a sneak preview of next week’s episode featuring the brilliant Australian guitarist, Geoff Achison. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
