American singer and songwriter Jacob Tolliver was raised on classic rock and roll blasting from his grandmother's radio. After a spontaneous rendition of “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On” on a dusty hardware store upright piano went viral, a star was born. At 19, Tolliver was hired as the understudy—and soon the principal—to play Jerry Lee Lewis in the Las Vegas production of the Tony-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet, giving him three years of eight-shows-a-week schooling in rock and roll showmanship. In this episode, Tolliver shares his inspirational story and how his friendship with Jerry Lee Lewis and other rock ‘n' roll notables has shaped his life and career.

This episode contains: Daylight savings hit, and we're all just trying to cope.   Real Life (or Whatever That Is)   Devon Saw Apocalyptica in Dallas—three cellists and a drummer, blasting Metallica covers. It was energetic, intense, and apparently, the drums were a standout. Nita Strauss opened, because Devon only goes to shows with legendary guitarists involved. Also, he went to a production of Cheaper by the Dozen, which was… a different vibe entirely. Steven got into Marvel Crisis Protocol, which he describes as similar to Shatterpoint. More importantly, he won his first game against his friend Greg, which obviously means he's an expert now. Devon saw Wicked and was deeply underwhelmed. (Expect fan outrage.) Ben went to a production of Million Dollar Quartet, which tells the story of a legendary jam session between Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. If you don't know what that is, here's a Wikipedia link: Million Dollar Quartet.   Future or Now (Depends on Your Perspective)   Remember Me!  Steven presents a real-life prequel to Fallout. Sweden is burying its radioactive nuclear waste in sealed bedrock for 100,000 years. The challenge? How do we make sure future generations don't dig it up and think, “Oh cool, ancient glowing rocks!” Scientists have some ideas, and they range from the practical to the deeply sci-fi.   Check it out:  Science Daily | Highly radioactive nuclear waste: how to keep it from oblivion A PDF of the actual Key Information File   CALM DOWN, JEEZ  Ben brings us a podcast from NPR and the TED Radio Hour about how we handle emotions, featuring insights from neuroscientist Ethan Kross on managing emotional overwhelm. Science-backed coping mechanisms? Yes, please. An example: talking to yourself in the second person to coach yourself.   Listen here: NPR - Ethan Kross on Managing Emotions   Also, Ben's dog has got Diabetes insipidus, which, despite the name, has nothing to do with regular diabetes. More on that here: Diabetes Insipidus   Book Club:  Continuing coverage of the novella To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers. This week, our crew traveled to Mirabilis (also the name of the chapter we read)—a planet of ice, deep-sea creatures, and they brought with them some existential dread. Some key themes:   Survival of the fittest (but at what cost?) The emotional toll of killing an animal for survival Missing communications from Earth  The sheer terror of the unknown   Devon asked, “Are they vegan?”—a question inspired by his recent reading of Animal Liberation Now. Also, sometimes Devon's not in the mood for fiction, but Becky Chambers' writing is worth it.   Next week: the chapter “Opera” (same book, different planet).

While we often touch on the contemporary songs of our own and subsequent generations in the show, we also like to drill into the performers and sounds that contributed to our musical heritage. The foundation of America's music is not just a single flavor. It is a melting pot of many from all corners: the British Isles, the African continent, the islands of the Caribbean, and points south and north. The resulting harmonies, topics, and musical celebrations have further woven themselves into the fabric of our culture. This week's show leans on some pieces that were suggested by a listener and this allowed me to take liberties when digging a bit deeper for the show. We'll hear from Pete Seeger, The Million Dollar Quartet, Buck Owens, Alison Krauss and Mississippi Fred McDowell. We'll also take in the American Songbag's In The Pines and then proceed down the river and over the hill in the show this week.

Today we discover the iconic jamming session that birthed ‘The Million Dollar Quartet' - Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl ‘Blue Suede Shoes' Perkins - who spent the day making music together at Sun Studios, Memphis on 4th December, 1956. Although the event began as an impromptu get-together, Sun's Sam Phillips was quick to call a press photographer to document the troupe, which also included Elvis's then-girlfriend, Marilyn Evans. Luckily, a savvy recording engineer also switched on the mics. Pamela Ziegenhagen-Shefland of Minnetonka, Minn., is an animation features editor and textile artist. Recently, she made the trip to the Owatonna Center for the Arts, where she marveled at the multi-sensory, interactive installation that is “Legacy Dream Space.” The exhibit was created by composer Craig Harris and visual artist Candy Kuehn, in collaboration with Kym Longhi and Jim Peitzman. Photographs line the walls, as do scrims, which are overlaid with video of exhibit visitors. Two play spaces invite visitors to interact with the exhibit by pressing buttons to hear spoken words or write their own words that appear on the scrims.Harris's original piano composition complements the experience. Taken together, the exhibit explores our hopes for the future and the legacy we leave behind. “There's things for everyone to enjoy,” says Ziegenhagen-Shefland. “It just made me feel really hopeful that the arts in this state and in this community are just so vibrant and exciting and explorative because it's not just the normal kind of going to a gallery show.” The show runs through Oct. 15, with an artist event scheduled on Oct. 8 from 1-4 p.m. Jaime Davis of Minneapolis says her current theater obsession is with the musical “Million Dollar Quartet,” currently playing at the Old Log Theatre in Greenwood, Minn. in the west metro. The show captures a real moment in musical history: the 1956 jam session of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley at Sun Records Studio in Memphis, Tenn. Directed by Christine O'Grady Roberts and featuring all local talent, the show is packed with hit songs that Davis says have the audience tapping their toes and singing along. The actors' voices and their high-energy performances are “phenomenal,” Davis says. If you attend the Thursday or Sunday matinee, she recommends getting brunch beforehand at the theater's restaurant. “Million Dollar Quartet” runs Thursday through Sunday through Feb. 17. Janet Anderson recently moved to St. Peter, Minn., and she's been enjoying discovering the local arts scene. One exhibit that captured her imagination has been Eric Ouren's textile figures on the wall of The Smallest Cog Bike Shop. It's a small show with about 10 pieces, but each one is intricately detailed and rewards close attention. The figures, which are about a foot tall, have stitched shoes and handmade clothing, and their faces are stitched with multiple colors of thread that reminded Anderson of an impressionist painter's brushstrokes. Many of the figures are mounted in elaborate frames that resemble wooden furniture. “There's a folk quality to the pieces,” says Anderson, “as if they were figures whittled out of wood, but they're made of textiles.” Ouren's show is viewable on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 7.

This week we welcome the Million Dollar Quartet! THE BOYS ARE BACK IN BRANSON! The fan-favorite Rock 'n‘ Roll show “The Million Dollar Quartet” is back in Branson in the Playhouse Dinner Theater at Shepherd of the Hills. This smash hit, based on the Tony award- winning production, takes you back to 1956 to the studio of the Father of Rock n Roll, Sam Phillips at the Sun Records Studios when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis actually came together for the greatest jam session in music history. Million Dollar Quartet takes you behind the scenes and puts you in the middle of the action as these four musicians, who became legends, returned to the studio of legendary producer, Sam Phillips, the man who invented Rock 'n' Roll. It is equal parts stage drama and foot-tapping live performance with hits like “Great Balls of Fire”, “Hound Dog”, “I Walk the Line”, “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On”, and more. We're serving up a delicious dinner while enjoying an unforgettable night of Rock'n'Roll! Shepherd of the Hills Homestead has been a favorite of Branson visitors for decades. The Ozark Mountains caught Nation's interest in 1907 when Harold Bell Wright's novel, The Shepherd of the Hills, was published. Wright's characters in the novel are based on people he met during his visit to the Ozark Mountains in the late 1800's, and the places he describes are on or surrounding the Shepherd of the Hills property of today.
While visiting, you can take a Historic Farm Tour and experience the Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Drama, which bring Wright's timeless tale to life. You can check out their website: www.TheShepherdOfTheHills.com. Or call: 417-334-4191.

Was there ever a more brainless, incoherent, intelligence-insulting cash grab of a music album released during Elvis' lifetime than Elvis Sings Hits From His Movies, Volume 1?  As Gurdip and Bec discuss this week, at least many of the other Camden releases prior to this bothered compiling material fans might not have otherwise had from EPs, singles and unreleased studio cuts. But 1972's "Hits From His Movies" hit new lows in Colonel Tom Parker's attempts to snow Elvis' fans and part them from their money... which makes it all more fun to deconstruct all these years later! Then, both hosts still seem to have Easter on the brain, with Gurdip picking the Million Dollar Quartet jam on the gospel traditional "I Shall Not Be Moved," while Bec praises the uplifting take Elvis & the band gave on Charles Albert Tindley's old spiritual "By and By" on the "How Great Thou Art" album! "Crazy Arms" sold 300,000 copies in the South, and his 1957 hit "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" shot Lewis to fame worldwide. He followed this with the major hits "Great Balls of Fire", "Breathless", and "High School Confidential". His rock and roll career faltered in the wake of his marriage to Myra Gale Brown, his 13-year-old cousin once removed. Lewis had a dozen gold records in rock and country. He won four Grammy awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and two Grammy Hall of Fame Awards.Lewis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and his pioneering contribution to the genre was recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the inaugural class inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022. Lewis was the last surviving member of Sun Records' Million Dollar Quartet and the album Class of '55, which also included Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Elvis Presley. Music critic Robert Christgau said of Lewis: "His drive, his timing, his offhand vocal power, his unmistakable boogie-plus piano, and his absolute confidence in the face of the void make Jerry Lee the quintessential rock and roller." https://jerryleelewis.com/ https://m.facebook.com/JerryLeeLewis/ https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/jerry-lee-lewis-dead-obituary-1234616945/amp/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/2zyz0VJqrDXeFDIyrfVXSo https://www.instagram.com/jerryleelewisthekiller/?hl=en https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4bB5xL577r4&autoplay=1 https://twitter.com/jerryleelewis?lang=en @Jerryleelewis @Greatballsoffire @Thekiller @breathless @sunrecord @pianoplayer @rockabilly #Jerryleelewis #greatballsoffire #rockabilly #rocknroll #piano #sunrecord Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support

He named it Sun Records as a sign of his perpetual optimism: a new day and a new beginning. Sam rented a small space at 706 Union Avenue for his own all-purpose studio. The label was launched amid a growing number of independent labels. In a short while Sun gained the reputation throughout Memphis as a label that treated local artists with respect and honesty. Sam provided a non-critical, spontaneous environment that invited creativity and vision. As a businessman, Phillips was patient and willing to listen to almost anyone who came in off the street to record. Memphis was a happy home to a diverse musical scene: gospel, blues, hillbilly, country, boogie, and western swing. Taking advantage of this range of talent, there were no style limitations at the label. In one form or another Sun recorded them all. Then in 1954 Sam found Elvis Presley, an artist who could perform with the excitement, unpredictability and energy of a blues artist but could reach across regional, musical and racial barriers. He helped form the beginnings of the Sun Sound by infusing Country music with R&B. Elvis's bright star attracted even more ground-breaking talent to the Sun galaxy. Listed among his contemporaries and music mates were Johnny Cash, the inimitable Jerry Lee Lewis, and the “Rockin' Guitar Man”, Carl Perkins. These four soon became known as the Million Dollar Quartet. Right behind them came Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, Bill Justis, Harold Jenkins (a.k.a. Conway Twitty) and other equally memorable musical talents. All eventually sold on Pop, R&B and Country charts and grew to international fame.Rockabilly became the major evolution in the Sun Sound. Lyrically it was bold; musically it was sparse; but it moved. In the 1950's Country music rarely used drums that were so vital to jazz, blues, and jump bands. In fact, drums were prohibited on stage at the Grand Ole Opry. However, Rockabilly drums played an essential role in driving teens across the nation to become enamored with the Rockabilly movement and the revolutionary Sun Sound. Once again, Sun was able to break new ground recording music of unparalleled diversity in an incubator of creativity.Inherent in the music of Sun is a vibrancy that survives to this day. Sincere, passionate music. Music that has stood the test of time. It is music that has reached across race, age and gender boundaries. It reflects the diversity and vision of the talent that recorded on the Sun label, and indeed, American popular culture itself.

This week we welcome David Brooks and The Bretts! David began playing piano at the age of six. He honed his craft until he was in his teens, when he hit the road playing gospel music professionally with groups such as the Hinsons upon graduating high school. After a number of years touring, he moved to Branson in 2003. When he arrived in Branson, David began performing in many of the most well- known shows in town. As a matter of fact, David has performed in most of the theaters in Branson with one show or another for almost two decades. While David has been with many Branson shows, his most identifiable role to this day was his portrayal of Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet. He has also been named Piano Player of the Year for Branson on multiple occasions. In addition to the accolades already mentioned, David spent several years doing his own shows on many top Cruise Lines such as Celebrity, Princess and others, as well. Currently, David has embarked on a new show in town and he is excited to have everyone come see it. His new show is playing at the Copeland Theater in Branson Meadows, called "The Hits". He along with some of his talented friends bring some of the most well-known HITS from the 50s to the present. Along with his new show, David continues to perform with Cassandre, The Voice of an Angel for Christmas and will also be a featured performer at the Moon River Theatre for the Christmas season, as well. You can find David and his talented cast at the Copeland Theater. For tickets and information, call 417- 332-5338; or visit CopelandTheater.com. After over 23 years of award-winning entertainment in Branson, MO and throughout the world, the Brett family has announced that November 1 to December 10, 2022 will be their final full Christmas season and the last chance to experience this production of A Brett Family Christmas. For more than two decades The Bretts have had one of the most popular shows in Branson. In recent years, they decided to focus only on the Christmas season, and A Brett Family Christmas has become one of Branson's premier Christmas productions. Now, as the family expands further into new and exciting personal and professional pursuits that are requiring more of their time and energy, they've decided they can no longer commit to a full Christmas season schedule. “We have a family of big vision and ambition, and I have always told them that we would never hold them back when it came time to pursue their own dreams,” says family patriarch Tom Brett. “That being said, this has not been an easy decision for us. Even though we won't be doing full Christmas seasons in Branson anymore, the family is excited about continuing to expand our music, our creativity and the family legacy in new ways.” “We've always said that Branson is our headquarters, but the world is our stage and we feel like it's time to deliver even more on that,” says Brydon Brett. “Soon we'll be introducing a new family brand and website where you can keep up on all of the exciting things each of us is doing to continue growing the Brett family footprint in Branson and beyond. So be on the lookout for that this Fall.” But for now the focus is on Christmas. This year's presentation of A Brett Family Christmas at Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theater will be a last chance for friends and fans to reminisce with The Bretts and experience the trademark warmth, quality and class they have become known for over their distinguished career in Branson. “We really love our fans and the friends we have made over the years,” says Tom. “So please, please come and see us, hug us if you dare, and celebrate the wonderful times we have shared together through our show.” Don't miss this chance to experience A Brett Family Christmas with one of Branson's most treasured and esteemed families. R&SRNR_163 – “THE REAL STORY OF THE MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET” (Show_011 Remastered & Reimagined) Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash – their unplanned get together at the Sun recording studios in December 1956 became known as the Million Dollar Quartet. More than 50 years later it inspired a hit Broadway musical of the same name that made millions for its creators, and it's still playing at various venues around the country.  But the truth is that the story that stage musical tells is mostly untrue – when it comes to the songs that Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash sang that day during their impromptu jam session. So, we'll relate the real story of the Million Dollar Quartet and detail the not-real stuff that's in the stage musical…and speculate just a bit on why the producers staged that show the way they did. We've got a million dollars-worth of Million Dollar Quartet history for you, and you'll hear it all right here.

A History Of Rock Music in Five Hundred Songs

This is just to let everyone know that the second volume of the book based on the podcast should be available by the time you get this episode in your podcast app. It's been a long, long, time coming, because the last year and a bit has been far more difficult, for far more reasons, than I can go into here, but the book is now done. It's called "From the Million Dollar Quartet to the Fab Four", and contains versions of the scripts for episodes fifty-one through one hundred, revised for the book format rather than audio, along with a rewritten version of the Patreon episode on the Big Bopper, an introduction summarising the first book, and a bibliography. The ebook should be available from every major ebook store, though it might take time to filter through to all of them. I'll be including a link in the blog post for this episode which, if you click it, will take you to your preferred ebook store if the book's available there. The paperback is currently only available from Amazon. It should eventually also be available from other retailers, as it will enter all the standard distribution catalogues, but it's self-published through Amazon's service, so those of you who boycott Amazon, completely understandably, might not want to buy that version. The ebook link will also take you to the Amazon page for the paperback. The hardback is available from lulu.com. That too will eventually also be available from other online bookstores, but I make more money, and you get it quicker, if you buy it from Lulu rather than a third party. Again, I'll link that in the notes here. The physical books are relatively expensive -- twenty-five dollars for the paperback, and fifty dollars for the hardback -- but they're *big* books -- six hundred and fifty-three pages counting the indexes -- and paper is expensive right now because of supply chain issues, so I hope you'll consider them good value for money, as they're literally priced as low as I can make them. If money's tight, the ebook is only $5. And speaking of good value for money, for one week only I've reduced the cost of the ebook of the first book to just one dollar. That's a limited-time offer to promote the series, so if you've not got that and want it, now's your chance. Patreon backers at the five-dollar-a-month level and higher have already received copies of the ebook. Those at higher levels will be receiving their copies of the physical books shortly -- they'll be being sent out in waves over the next few weeks. It's because of those backers that I am able to do this podcast at all, and I can't thank them enough for their generosity.See you all in a couple of days, when we'll be looking at the Byrds, and "Eight Miles High".   Links to buy the book: Ebooks (and paperback through Amazon) Hardback Link to buy the first book (only $1 in ebook this week) The ebook for Patreon backers
