When Chuck Mead was a young boy, he and his sister moved with their parents to Lawrence, Kansas. He got a drum kit as a gift when he was 12, and soon after started playing in the family's band. It was made up of his mom, his dad, his grandparents and uncles who played country and western, and Chuck would also sing songs by Carl Perkins and Elvis. An uncle taught Chuck how to play guitar and by high school, he was playing in bands with friends. He continued to play while attending The University of Kansas, still having a fondness for rockabilly and country, but was also listening to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Springsteen and even the Ramones. His band, The Homestead Grays, recorded a couple of records and after college, Chuck moved to Nashville. He played in the window of Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and before long, he and Gary Bennett formed BR549. Crowds packed in to see them play Robert's on Lower Broadway. They were an enormous hit, and soon became famous worldwide. A few weeks after seeing him with his current band, The Stalwarts, I had the pleasure of talking with the extremely talented, and very very funny, Chuck Mead.Photo by Joshua Black Wilkins. Episode 294: Formed in Dallas in 1992, Old 97's became one of the seminal bands of the alternative country movement, alongside Whiskeytown, Son Volt, the Bottle Rockets and BR549. At its heart was the longtime friendship of bass player Murry Hammond and guitarist/songwriter Rhett Miller. Remarkably, across 13 albums and millions of miles, Old 97's remains the same quartet that broke out on Bloodshot Records three decades ago. They're still having fun and keeping company with their large base of lifelong fans. Craig made a field trip to Lexington, KY this summer to catch a show and sit down with Miller to talk about the long road and the newest album American Primitive.

Internationally acclaimed Nashville honky tonk Robert's Western World will celebrate its 25th Anniversary under the proprietorship of JesseLee Jones on August 5th, 2024. To celebrate, we welcome JesseLee himself to share with us the mega party expected to take over Nashville, and to share with us his one-of-a kind story that shines the American Dream on Lower Broadway. JesseLee, from his humble beginnings in São Paulo, Brazil, fell in love with classic American music - traditional country, gospel, rockabilly, and roots. He immigrated to the States in 1984, and was robbed of everything he owned on the first day! He was taken in by a family associated with his church, and did every odd job he could find to make money. One job was looking after the family's children, learning English from watching "Sesame Street" with them. JesseLee eventually began playing music and making a name for himself. In the 1980s, Nashville's Lower Broadway district fell on hard financial times, was run down, and became home to "adult" businesses. In the early 90s, Robert Wayne Moore started the venue which eventually became Robert's Western World. In 1995, Robert booked JesseLee to perform at the honky tonk; the house band at the time, BR549, nicknamed JesseLee "the Brazilian Hillbilly," and it stuck. In 1999, Robert decided it was time to pass the torch, and sold the venue to JesseLee, whose band "Brazilbilly" had become the house band (and it still is!). Since then, JesseLee has turned Robert's into a destination for people from all over the world who love traditional country music, which includes folks like Sting, Joe Walsh, Post Malone, Kacey Musgraves, and so many more. _____________________________ This episode is brought to you by Magic Mind. Kansas native Chuck Mead is the subject of KMUW's upcoming music tasting on Thursday, Sept. 5, at Roxy's Downtown. Raised in Lawrence, Mead is a founding member of the Grammy-nominated band BR549. He also brought the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet to life via his understanding of the intersection between rural and urban music. As a member of Lawrence's Homestead Grays in the 1980s and '90s, he forged the future of Americana music by combining elements of country and rock ‘n' roll. Since BR549's disbandment in 2006, Mead has created a series of acclaimed solo albums, including Free State Serenade and this year's Close To Home . In two interviews with KMUW, he discussed his Kansas roots and his memories of the Sunflower State. This interview has been edited for clarity and length. Music was the family business for you. The decade-plus since the conclusion of his era-shifting band BR549 have been a case study in creative evolution for Chuck Mead. He's still a stalwart of classic country music and an original songwriter, but he's found new ways to express his expertise. Most significantly has been supervising the music for the Tony Award-winning musical The Million Dollar Quartet and the CMT series Sun Records. Those deep dives into Memphis music culture led to his most recent album Close To Home, which was made at Sam Phillips Recording. Also in the hour, the fresh new direction of songwriter/guitarist Courtney Hartman. Her life after string band Della Mae has been introspective and exploratory, culminating in a 500-mile pilgrimage in Spain and a solo debut album, Ready Reckoner.
