When Chuck Mead was a young boy, he and his sister moved with their parents to Lawrence, Kansas. He got a drum kit as a gift when he was 12, and soon after started playing in the family's band. It was made up of his mom, his dad, his grandparents and uncles who played country and western, and Chuck would also sing songs by Carl Perkins and Elvis. An uncle taught Chuck how to play guitar and by high school, he was playing in bands with friends. He continued to play while attending The University of Kansas, still having a fondness for rockabilly and country, but was also listening to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Springsteen and even the Ramones. His band, The Homestead Grays, recorded a couple of records and after college, Chuck moved to Nashville. He played in the window of Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and before long, he and Gary Bennett formed BR549. Crowds packed in to see them play Robert's on Lower Broadway. They were an enormous hit, and soon became famous worldwide. A few weeks after seeing him with his current band, The Stalwarts, I had the pleasure of talking with the extremely talented, and very very funny, Chuck Mead.Photo by Joshua Black Wilkins. He did the same on the band's 2010 Easy Wonderful. He produced and penned the title track for Lang's 2011 album, Sing It Loud, and acted as music director for the accompanying tour. As a producer and mixer Joes credits include: Ben Folds Five's, The Hush Kids, Zac Clark, Drew Holcolmb, Chuck Mead, Josh Rouse, Courtney Jaye, Matt Wertz, William Tyler, The Silver Seas and The Pierces and when the Grammy Award-winning band Fun needed orchestral recording for its Grammy performance, they called on Joe. In 2019 Pisapia recorded his first instrumental album, “Imbolc.” For a 2020 release of the album, he made music “videos,” which consisted of him making some of his favorite comfort foods. Joe also produced much of, and mixed all of Pam Tillis' “Looking For A Feeling.” Tillis cut Pisapia's song “Better Friends,” which was originally released on his solo album, “Connection.” NPR's Ann Powers singled out Tillis' version of “Better Friends” calling it a “quintessential country song.” Also in 2019 Joe produced Jillette Johnson's “It's A Beautiful Day And I Love You,” and was part of the live ensemble whom recorded the album “Outside Child” by Allison Russell, produced by Dan Knobler which Joe described as “tantamount to a holy experience.” THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! https://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com https://www.native-instruments.com use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://lewitt.link/rockstars https://www.Spectra1964.com https://MacSales.com/rockstars https://iZotope.com use code ROCK10 to get 10% off any individual plugin! https://www.adam-audio.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy https://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/ Listen to this guest's discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Y5ypkRrlcKQWcy6fPjgX8?si=dec7efe6473e4d00 If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/425

Carly and I would be eternally grateful as we continue to try to keep our head above water with this thing. Back in March of 2021 Carly and I released Episode #112 of The Troubadour featuring a western swing band that I knew had a boatload of talent. The interview featured Ryan Humbert and Emily Bates of the Ohio based band named The Shootouts. At the time they were promoting their latest record entitled “Bullseye” produced by Chuck Mead. Well, since that time they've been grinding it out on the road and have cut another record called “Stampede” with Ray Benson and Sam Seifert co-producing. “Stampede” features guest performances by Ray, Asleep at the Wheel, Jim Lauderdale, Marty Stuart, Raul Malo and Buddy Miller. Not exactly a bunch of light-weights! Today we're catching up with Shootouts frontman Ryan Humbert to hear all about the new record and their debut performance at The Grand Ole Opry on February 24th, 2023 which just also happened to be the day “Stampede” was released. There're some great conversation in this episode that you won't want to miss so let's get to it! Here comes Episode #174 of The Troubadour and our visit with Ryan Humbert, frontman of the red hot western swing band, The Shootouts.
Born and raised in Rahway, New Jersey, Pisapia migrated to Nashville in the mid-1990s with his brother, the drummer Marc Pisapia, as the namesake members of Joe, Marc's Brother. Following its Rick Clark- produced self-titled debut, the band quickly became progenitors of a burgeoning indie pop and rock scene that included artists such as Josh Rouse, David Mead and Lambchop. In 2000, the release of the Robin Eaton, Roger Moutenot and Brad Jones-produced Around the Year with Joe, Marc's Brother cemented the band's reputation as masters of the pop-rock genre. While Joe, Marc's Brother as a unit now performs infrequently, Pisapia continues to record and perform as a solo artist. As a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work as a member of Guster and k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang. He co- produced and co-wrote Guster's 2006 release, Ganging Up On the Sun, an album that cracked Billboard's Top 25 and was one of the best selling internet albums of the year. He did the same on the band's 2010 Easy Wonderful. He produced and penned the title track for Lang's 2011 album, Sing It Loud, and acted as music director for the accompanying tour.As a producer and mixer, he's worked on some of the finest indie rock and pop and Americana records to come out of Nashville in the last few years. Among his credits are: Ben Folds Five's The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, The Hush Kids (Self Titled,) Zac Clark (Self Titled,) Drew Holcolmb And The Neighbors' Medicine and Souvenir, Chuck Mead's Free State Serenade, Josh Rouse's Love In The Modern Age, Courtney Jaye's The Exotic Sounds Of Courtney Jaye, Matt Wertz's While We're Becoming, William Tyler's Lost Colony E.P. and Paper Hats, The Silver Seas' Alaska and ThePierces' self-titled album. When the Grammy Award-winning band Fun. needed orchestral recording for its Grammy performance, they called on Pisapia. In 2016 Pisapia collaborated with singer/ songwriter Kate York for the duet E.P. “Kate York And Joe Pisapia.” The song “All My Worry” was featured in the 2016 “Magnolia Mix Tape” vinyl release. 2018 was a watershed year for Pisapia as he released two full length solo albums. https://www.joepisapia.net/https://www.facebook.com/JoePisapiaMusic/https://www.instagram.com/joepisapia/?hl=enhttps://joepisapia.bandcamp.com/Host - Trey Mitchelltreymitchellphotography IGfeeding_the_senses_unsensored on IGtrey mitchell: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848For Sponsorship Information or Questions - ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne
In this time capsule episode from the eTown show archives, we're revisiting a live show from 2009 in Fort Collins, Colorado featuring Loretta Lynn and Chuck Mead. We'll also have a conversation with this week's eChievement Award winner, Jane Clark, about her work with the non-profit effort, the Land Legacy Trust, which works in preserving natural areas, and farm and ranch lands, for everyone's benefit.
Join Smilin' Jay McDowell, guitar-player-turned-upright bassist from the small town of West Lafayette, Indiana, as he takes you on his journey from watching and playing in bands in the back room at Lucy's to traveling the world with BR5-49. If you lived in Nashville in the 90s and loved live music you may have known about the punk scene at Lucy's, but you definitely knew about the resurgence of hillbilly and western swing played in the seedy honky tonks on Lower Broad. Jay felt equally at home in both places. Some nights he'd hang out and watch bands at Lucy's or play a gig there with the band Hellbilly. Other nights he'd go downtown to drink cheap beer and watch Greg Garing, Paul Burch, Tim Carroll, or BR5-49 play at Tootsie's or Robert's Western Wear. When he was asked to join BR5-49 he jumped at the chance (it may have been the liquor talking), switching his primary instrument from guitar to stand-up bass and adding some additional style and substance to a band already bursting with it. Jay's tales include his favorite shows at Lucy's, what the scene was like on Lower Broad both pre- and post-BR5-49, chatting with Keith Richards and John Fogerty, touring with Bob Dylan, and what it was like when ALL the record companies came a-callin'. Smilin' Jay McDowell heads the video department at The Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN, which opened to bring attention to studio and road musicians who play a vital role in the creation of music but rarely get the attention they deserve. He even has his own well-deserved exhibit in the museum celebrating his work as a session bass player with artists such as Marty Stuart, Dierks Bentley, The Black Crowes, Alan Jackson, Levon Helm, The Crickets and BR5-49. Go see it. This episode is dedicated to John Van Etten (1966-1995), Timothy White (1952-2002), and Jim Bessman (1952-2021). We'll be settling into some classic country sounds from the golden age alongside some contemporary sounds that stay steadfast in a sound that rings true and authentic. We'll hear some classics from Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, Webb Pierce and others. There will be plenty of original sounds from BR5-49 and Chuck Mead, k.d. lang, Don Edwards, and The Mavericks to remind us of the clear line between authentic and what's attempting to pass for country these days. Tune in for a mix of swing, story songs, love songs, and foot-tappin' treasures on Deeper Roots this week on Sonoma County Community radio where the music will always take you somewhere other than the main stream. We seldom venture there.
The Shooutouts, Bullseye⦁ The Shootouts, I Don't Think About You Anymore⦁ Jesse Daniel, Think I'll Stay⦁ West of Texas, My Whiskey Life ⦁ West of Texas, Foolin'⦁ Brock Gonyea, All Night Long⦁ Brock Gonyea, Lovin' You⦁ Frank Jacket, There She Goes⦁ Frank Jacket, Walk On By⦁ Vincent Neil Emerson, Texas Moon ⦁ Jim Lauderdale, The Opportunity to Help Somebody Through It⦁ Kenny Brothers Band, Friends, Lovers and Radios⦁ Kenny Brothers Band, One That Got Away⦁ Madelyn Victoria, Right Here With You⦁ Madelyn Victoria, Good at Goodbye⦁ Ben Mastwyk, Devil So Close⦁ Blackberry Smoke, Lonesome for a Livin' (feat. Welcome to episode #112 of The Troubadour. We’ve got a great episode for you today featuring Ryan Humbert and Emily Bates of a great band I’ve become a huge fan of called The Shootouts. The Shootouts can be described and equal parts vintage Nashville and Texas Swing with a healthy helping of Bakersfield bravado. Their 2019 debut album, Quick Draw, was recently followed up by their newest record, Bullseye, produced by former BR-549 frontman, Chuck Mead. If you are a fan of good lyrics and strong stage presence, Humbert won’t let you down as the frontman of the group. Add in the harmony vocals of Bates along with a rhythm section made up of Ryan McDermott on the bass and Dylan Gomez on the drum kit. Finally, if you are a fan of incredible guitar work like I am, The Shootouts lead guitarist Brian Poston just might leave you a bit spellbound. I immediately heard similarities in Brian’s playing to my favorite guitarist and past guest on the podcast, The Chicken Pickin’ King, Johnny Hiland. You can find out more at www.shootoutsmusic.com, including all their social links. And for you fans of vinyl out there, this group has some of the coolest vinyl record designs we’ve ever seen. The Shootouts are known for their energetic blend of honky-tonk, Americana, and traditional country. After releasing their acclaimed 2019 debut Quick Draw, the band charted Top 50 on Americana radio and in 2020, were nominated for an Ameripolitan Music Award for “Best Honky-Tonk Group.” They have shared the stage with luminaries Marty Stuart, Jim Lauderdale, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Radney Foster, Sheryl Crow, and many more. Produced by Grammy-nominee and BR549 founder Chuck Mead, Bullseye ranges from catchy pedal steel-filled numbers (“Everything I Know”) to two-step worthy tunes (“Here Come The Blues”) to never before recorded fan live favorites (“Rattlesnake Whiskey” and “Saturday Night Town”).
Naughty Ho, Kinks Kontinue, and Happy Birthday, Chuck Mead and Katie Nichols!

A Charlie Brown Christmas has a special place in the hearts of many. The cartoon from 1965 introduced generations of children to “ennui” before they had a name for it, and the soundtrack by The Vince Guaraldi Trio added some emotional gravity to effervescence that characterizes much of the Christmas canon. The album’s centerpiece, “Christmas Time is Here,” became a Christmas standard in the 1990s, when it was covered by Mel Tormé, Chicago, Shawn Colvin and guitarist Steve Vai, and last year Houston’s global indie/psychedelic rock band Khruangbin released a great version of the song. During the 12 Songs conversation with Chuck Mead that started this season, Mead talked about his inability to play Christmas concerts because his drummer, Martin Lynds, was busy in December with another band, The Ornaments, who perform the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack from beginning to end in a series of show through the month of December in Nashville. The Ornaments have been doing playing these gigs for 14 years now, and recently, host Alex Rawls talked to Lynds and pianist Jen Gunderman about The Ornaments, Vince Guaraldi, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and what’s wrong with Santa in the animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. After that, this episode returns to a guest from earlier this season, Joel Dinerstein. Dinerstein is a professor at Tulane University who has written extensively about notions of cool in America, and he recently appeared on 12 Songs to talk about cool and uncool Christmas songs. During that conversation, Dinerstein talked about A Charlie Brown Christmas, but since the episode was lengthy with a lot to think about before it got to that section, Rawls decided to hold that section until now. The second section of today’s show is that exchange. Recently, listener Raymond Martin shared a massive Christmas playlist that he posted on Google Play. You can hear it here, and if you have a Christmas playlist you want to share, you can reach Alex through Facebook or by emailing alex@myspiltmilk.com. If you think you've got good taste in Christmas music and/or some cool obscurities, show us what you've got. 'tis the season! Finally, if you’re listening to this episode here, please subscribe to 12 Songs through Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. That way, you don’t miss an episode and I have numbers to help convince artists and their managers that appearing on the podcast is a good idea. Those numbers also help advertisers see “12 Songs” as a way to reach their markets. It’s a win/win!

Sometimes the greatest treasures are hiding in plain sight. Such is the case with Christine Smith. As a 20 year veteran of rock and roll’s inner circles, she is perhaps best known for her international touring and recording work with Crash Test Dummies, Jesse Malin, Ryan Adams, and the band Marah. She’s also shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, Shane McGowan, Amy Grant, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, Alejandro Escovedo, Chuck Mead, H.R. of Bad Brains, and Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group, just to name a few. Now, in 2019, she’s stepping from the background into the spotlight with her solo album “Meet Me on the Far Side of a Star.”

Americana artist Chuck Mead loves Christmas music and has performed and recorded it on his own and with the band that got him in the public eye, BR5-49. In today's conversation, he talks about getting a chance during one of those periods when country music labels signed country traditionalists, only to discover that radio and audiences wanted whatever's current more. Still, Mead's love of Christmas music has professionally come in short bursts for him. A single here, a compilation track there. As a songwriter, he thinks he has said all he has to say in "The Happy Holiday Song" and doesn't see himself doing an album of other people's songs or writing an album's worth for himself. Still, the Christmas tracks he has been involved with have all been interesting including his South Texas rock steady cover of Eddy Arnold's "Will Santa Come to Shanty Town," an idea that came to him from via his A&R man on the project, Cheetah Crome from punk band The Dead Boys. The experience inspired the track "I'm Not the Man for the Job" for Mead's most recent album, Close to Home. For the album, Mead recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Studio, continuing his run through legendary roots music recording studios. Memphis isn't obvious in the album's sound, but the choice made sense because Mead served as musical director for the Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet--a story based on Memphis Sun Studios' legends Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. In our conversation, we talk about BR5-49 performing a cover of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen's "Daddy's Drinking Our Christmas Away" with Marty Stuart on an episode of The Marty Stuart Show. For the episode, I cut the conversation before the song. Here's the clip in its entirety. Kansas native Chuck Mead is the subject of KMUW's upcoming music tasting on Thursday, Sept. 5, at Roxy's Downtown. Raised in Lawrence, Mead is a founding member of the Grammy-nominated band BR549. He also brought the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet to life via his understanding of the intersection between rural and urban music. As a member of Lawrence's Homestead Grays in the 1980s and '90s, he forged the future of Americana music by combining elements of country and rock ‘n' roll. Since BR549's disbandment in 2006, Mead has created a series of acclaimed solo albums, including Free State Serenade and this year's Close To Home . In two interviews with KMUW, he discussed his Kansas roots and his memories of the Sunflower State. This interview has been edited for clarity and length. Music was the family business for you. When my mother was young, my grandpa, my grandma and my mom's two brothers had a radio show in Nevada, Missouri. Right down 54 on a station called KNEM.

The decade-plus since the conclusion of his era-shifting band BR549 have been a case study in creative evolution for Chuck Mead. He's still a stalwart of classic country music and an original songwriter, but he's found new ways to express his expertise. Most significantly has been supervising the music for the Tony Award-winning musical The Million Dollar Quartet and the CMT series Sun Records. Those deep dives into Memphis music culture led to his most recent album Close To Home, which was made at Sam Phillips Recording. Also in the hour, the fresh new direction of songwriter/guitarist Courtney Hartman. Her life after string band Della Mae has been introspective and exploratory, culminating in a 500-mile pilgrimage in Spain and a solo debut album, Ready Reckoner.

Later this month (2/23), the series SUN Records premieres on CMT, with music supervision by friend of the show and friend of hillbilly music Chuck Mead. We’ve been thrilled to follow Chuck’s journey on this unexpectedly large gig. Years ago he was hired to keep the music real in the then off-Broadway production of Million Dollar Quartet. It grew into a global award winning phenomenon. This week we got to hear Chuck perform his own music again for the first time in a while, and he was part of our own quartet of Nashville artists. Worth a million? Who’s to say. What’s fair to notice, I think, is that for ten bucks, it was a very good deal.
In this episode, Moot interviews the one and only Chuck Mead. Kinney sits with his guitar, sometimes breaking into song while offering wisdom with regard to why musicians shouldn’t watch themselves on stage, how the popularity of vinyl has actually made It harder for many artists to release music on vinyl, fan behavior, his Best Of Songs release and the four separately-themed EPs from which it was culled, the project he is working on with BR5-49 co-founder Chuck Mead, performing in Europe, the evils of addiction, the Drivn’ n Cryin’ documentary “Scarred But Smarter,” why musicians should learn musical history, the danger of credit cards, appreciating and respecting our returning soldiers, the horrors of cabbage patch birth, Atlanta’s Ferris wheel and more. He also offers a li’l taste of his hit “Straight To Hell,” done reggae style, and demonstrates his various approaches to “Scarred But Smarter” and “Fly Me Courageous,” and performs other Kinney gems in their entirety. Closing music includes a sneak preview of next week’s episode featuring the brilliant Australian guitarist, Geoff Achison. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
