Every city has a family who shapes it. New York City had the Rockefellers. St. Louis had the Bushes. Boston had the Kennedys. Nashville has the Bone family. They are attorneys by trade but political powerhouses and real estate tycoons in practice. In this episode of Climbing the Charts, Angie Lawless and Brandon Miller sit down with Charles Robert Bone. The Nashville Post called the attorney turned developer “one of the most recognizable figures in Nashville's legal, political and development circles.” His resume defends that descriptor. Before joining Southwest Value Partners as Managing Director of Real Estate Investment, Bone was the President and CEO of Bone McAllester Norton, a prominent Nashville law firm. He is also the founder of Phoenix Boats, a bass boat manufacturer based in Winchester, TN, the Southern Steak & Oyster, a beloved restaurant in SoBro, and Acme Feed & Seed, a popular, multi-level restaurant, bar, and event space located on Lower Broadway. Bone has served on several boards, including: The Community Foundation of Middle TN, the Oasis Center, and Hands On Nashville. Most recently, Bone has taken on a key role in one of the most transformative projects in Nashville's modern history—Nashville Yards. The massive mixed-use development is redefining the city's skyline and economic future, blending innovation, entertainment, and urban vibrancy in the heart of downtown. The Nashville Democrat has also worked on local, state, and federal campaigns including, but not limited to: former Mayor Karl Dean's gubernatorial race, Harold Ford's 2006 Senate race, and both of former President Barack Obama's campaigns.

On this episode of The Vocal Lab Podcast, hosts Jason Catron and Shelby Rollins are joined by none other than Clark Beckham — artist, vocal powerhouse, and passionate teacher. In a candid and inspiring conversation, Clark opens up about the twists and turns of his musical journey, starting with his early days busking on Lower Broadway in Nashville, where he learned to command an audience one song at a time. From there, Clark shares the highs and pressures of his time on American Idol, giving listeners an inside look at what it's like to perform on one of the biggest stages in the world — and the lessons that experience taught him about himself, both as a singer and as a person. But perhaps the most powerful part of the episode is Clark's reflection on discovering his authentic artistry — letting go of external expectations, finding his voice, and learning to create music that's honest, meaningful, and true to who he really is.“I spent so much time trying to be what I thought people wanted. The real breakthrough came when I stopped performing and started expressing. That's when everything changed.” — Clark Beckham

When he was 7 years old, a friend's father was in the entertainment business. Hanging out at rehearsals and on the tour buses sold Matt on the idea of being a musician, or at the very least, a drummer. All this lead to spending his high school years at Fort Hayes vocational school for music and Capital University Conservatory of Music for college studying under drum instructor Bob Breithaupt. The musical diversity in Columbus gave Matt the chance to play with many great players and learning many different styles – from Big Band (Vaughn Weister's Famous Jazz Orchestra) and Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and Fusion. All the while, he was doing his share of gigs with original rock bands and top 40 bands. Matt moved to Nashville in the summer of 1999. Working as a freelance drummer based in Nashville has taken him to all 50 states in the U.S. and most of Canada, as well as overseas to Europe, Asia, The Middle East and The Caribbean. As well as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Matt has performed in great local venues like the Ryman Auditorium, Mercy Lounge, 3rd and Lindsley, The 5 Spot, The Sutler, The Basement, The Wildhorse Saloon, and many clubs on lower Broadway. Matt has toured both regionally and nationally, with the Adam and Shannon Wright, Mark Selby, Eddy Raven, Billy Dean, Stephen Simmons, Three Lane, Whiskey Cash & Roses, Michelle Wright - (throughout Canada), Julie Roberts, and The Frontmen of Country which is Larry Stewart of Restless Heart, Richie McDonald of Lonestar, Tim Rushlow of Little Texas. From 2009 to 2017 Matt was the full time drummer for the band Savannah Jack. He played percussion on their first studio record in 2010 opposite Steve Ferrone on drums. For their second studio record in 2015, Matt was the drumset and percussion player in the studio. In the studio, Matt has had the pleasure of working with talented producers including Eric Fritsch, Teddy Morgan, Jim Reilley and Brent Maher. Artist he's recorded with in the studio have included Sheryl Crow, legendary songwriter Buzz Cason and actor Kevin Costner. In 2015, Matt started a podcast for drummers called "Working Drummer", an interview based podcast that maintains a focus on the drummer that makes a living at his or her craft. I've long been fascinated with neon signs. The glow of their lights is one of my earliest childhood memories. One of my hobbies is to take photos of them whenever I get the chance. Anytime I travel, I'm always on the lookout for a sign I've never seen. Nashville's tourist area, Lower Broadway, is filled with neon. Nearly every restaurant or bar that opens puts up a neon sign. They pop up almost every day. Our lights aren't as bright as Las Vegas, but we're getting there. Sadly, so many older examples are long gone. In many places, they fell out of favor years ago... When Chuck Mead was a young boy, he and his sister moved with their parents to Lawrence, Kansas. He got a drum kit as a gift when he was 12, and soon after started playing in the family's band. It was made up of his mom, his dad, his grandparents and uncles who played country and western, and Chuck would also sing songs by Carl Perkins and Elvis. An uncle taught Chuck how to play guitar and by high school, he was playing in bands with friends. He continued to play while attending The University of Kansas, still having a fondness for rockabilly and country, but was also listening to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Springsteen and even the Ramones. His band, The Homestead Grays, recorded a couple of records and after college, Chuck moved to Nashville. He played in the window of Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and before long, he and Gary Bennett formed BR549. Crowds packed in to see them play Robert's on Lower Broadway. They were an enormous hit, and soon became famous worldwide. A few weeks after seeing him with his current band, The Stalwarts, I had the pleasure of talking with the extremely talented, and very very funny, Chuck Mead.Photo by Joshua Black Wilkins. Florida native McCoy Gibbs made the move to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 18 to pursue a Music Business degree at Belmont University. He not only earned that degree, but also made lifelong connections and friendships while falling in love with the city, energy, and opportunity that is Nashville. The crazy part is that Gibbs didn't really learn to play drums until his college years. For this natural musician, drums and rhythm came naturally and he found his groove, literally. After college, Gibbs emerged as a drummer while playing with pop/rock band Hot Celle Rae. He then went on to become an independent drummer to soak in all the music he could. During this time he met tons of musicians, bands and artists, cut his teeth on the grind of Broadway bars and “honky tonks,” and jumped in a van for a random show in Montana. He loved every minute of it. In 2013, his hard work paid off when Gibbs successfully auditioned for CMA-nominated Duo of the Year, Love and Theft, and hit the road for the busiest year of his life thus far. It hasn't slowed down for him since. From touring, live TV performances, music videos and award shows, Gibbs has kept himself quite busy. Gibbs is currently playing with 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Lauren Alaina, and continues to find other ways to fill in the occasional off day with sessions, shows, and housework. If there is an example of hard work, passion, and preparation paying off, McCoy Gibbs is that example. Internationally acclaimed Nashville honky tonk Robert's Western World will celebrate its 25th Anniversary under the proprietorship of JesseLee Jones on August 5th, 2024. To celebrate, we welcome JesseLee himself to share with us the mega party expected to take over Nashville, and to share with us his one-of-a kind story that shines the American Dream on Lower Broadway. JesseLee, from his humble beginnings in São Paulo, Brazil, fell in love with classic American music - traditional country, gospel, rockabilly, and roots. He immigrated to the States in 1984, and was robbed of everything he owned on the first day! He was taken in by a family associated with his church, and did every odd job he could find to make money. One job was looking after the family's children, learning English from watching "Sesame Street" with them. JesseLee eventually began playing music and making a name for himself. In the 1980s, Nashville's Lower Broadway district fell on hard financial times, was run down, and became home to "adult" businesses. In the early 90s, Robert Wayne Moore started the venue which eventually became Robert's Western World. In 1995, Robert booked JesseLee to perform at the honky tonk; the house band at the time, BR549, nicknamed JesseLee "the Brazilian Hillbilly," and it stuck. In 1999, Robert decided it was time to pass the torch, and sold the venue to JesseLee, whose band "Brazilbilly" had become the house band (and it still is!). Since then, JesseLee has turned Robert's into a destination for people from all over the world who love traditional country music, which includes folks like Sting, Joe Walsh, Post Malone, Kacey Musgraves, and so many more. _____________________________ This episode is brought to you by Magic Mind. Nashville tourism leaders just released a new plan to move big events like the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve across the river to the East Bank in years to come, which does nothing to reassure folks that “Nashville's Next Great Neighborhood” won't simply be a back forty for Lower Broadway's debauched tourism culture. After another weekend of drunken violence downtown — and with stadium construction already making a mess in East Nashville — host Grace Fuisz, producer Marie Cecile Anderson, and executive producer Whitney Pastorek discuss what if anything can be done to keep locals from losing their minds over the next decade. Plus: ways to beat the heat from our in-house lifeguard. Thanks to Tecovas, our Western wear faves, for being our exclusive launch sponsor! Want some more City Cast Nashville news? Everyone knows that Nashville has been called Music City USA for eons. Everywhere you turn, there's music, and not just of the country variety. If you had the time, you could watch concerts nightly. It hasn't always been that way. Things started changing when they revitalized the Lower Broadway area. But enjoying shows every night may be the dream of someone visiting. But for those living in residential areas, we want our quiet time, that is, unless you live next door to a starving musician... Born Justin Brownlee Tolley in Central VA April 6, 1974, Justin took in a variety of early music influences from an early age including classic rock, R&B, funk and classic country and Americana genres to eventually learn piano, trombone & bass guitar and navigate his unique path and career in music. He has arranged & written in Virginia original bands including RedLightGo 97-99 (Lexington), Mafia Track Suit 09-12 (Roanoke), while hustling the cover band circuit for 13 years with the Worx. When not booked with the Worx, always eager to meet players and play with Roanoke valley bands. With the Worx, he opened for bands including: Keith Urban, Tracy Lawrence, Trace Adkins, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, to name a few. Always a proponent of moving the Roanoke scene forward, he spent the early 2000s at downtown haunts like Green Dolphin's open mic, Martin's, Blue5, 202, Awfuls - always up to hang and support members of the Roanoke music scene. His move to Nashville in early 2015 continued an ever-changing career path, connecting with Jon Wysocki former drummer of Staind to make music together. Lower Broadway & midtown became the grind and networking hub amidst one of the richest musician pools on the planet. Writing, recording and touring with Jon behind Natalie Brady Band (see FB and YouTube), then following the restart of the Covid lockdown, bassist of original rock act River Ghost. (found on all streaming platforms) During his 7+ years in Nashville, he primarily toured the midwest from the Gulf up to Minneapolis, Kansas City to Key West from 2015-2019 with multiple bands. One of his favorite tours as bass player for upcoming artist Kasey Tyndall, opening for Whiskey Myers & Jamey Johnson - both huge musical influences. Moving on from the Natalie Brady Band post Covid shutdown, he headed back to Nashville and through a shared reference met up with River Ghost, all original bluesy/ swampy-rock band akin to Crowes/ Allman/ Sabbath .. The remaining two years in Nashville was spent writing, showcasing and recording River Ghost material, while juggling steady shifts with “Loud & Co”, bending the rules with tired setlist at a time in and around Nashville, mostly in the Lower Broadway scene. Upon meeting Belgium native Kathleen Ongena in Nashville, they formed 369 Music, a Rock cover band putting hand-selected players together to gig around Nashville. Eventually the need to relocate to Virginia came to bear since losing his father to a stroke in 2019. The decision was made in fall 2022 to return home to take care of the home place in Natural Bridge Station. Justin and Kat set up 369 Music gigs in Virginia, enlisting players in the area to round out the lineup. Follow on FB at 369 Music. Now residing in Natural Bridge Station, Justin still pursues music when the gigs present themselves, as well as aviation - working toward his pilot license. And like the Nashville scene, willing to jump in when bands are in need of bass in the area. ‘369 Music', is currently putting together a press kit to promote bookings, also dates on his books playing for local Kid Rock tribute act “Cowboy”.
Today we sit down with Jessie Wilson. This young lady is climbing the country music ladder with her incredible duets and solo offerings that would make anyone stop dead in their tracks. You can catch her on Lower Broadway in Nashville but don't let that make you second guess the song writing ability and pure talent that Jessie has! Enjoy the show!
Robert's Western World on Nashville's Lower Broadway was home to the Don Kelley Band for as long as anyone can remember. Kelley's band was an institution in Nashville, serving as a stepping stone for super-pickers like Guthrie Trapp, Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, Daniel Donato, JD Simo, and more. “Slick” Joe Fick and Luke McQueary also came up through the ranks of the Don Kelley Band. After Don retired in 2020, Fick and McQueary enlisted drummer/vocalist Billy Van Vleet and kept Don's old shift going, throwing down at Robert's Western World each night from Wednesday through Saturday. John Bohlinger and the PG team joined Kelley's Heroes pre-shift at Robert's to rundown their rigs.Brought to you by D'Addario:https://ddar.io/wykyk-rrhttps://www.daddario.com/XPNDRR

Over the weekend, someone called in a bomb threat for one of the businesses in Nashville's Lower Broadway tourist district. My first thought was there could be a connection to 9/11. I don't know how the two might connect, but that's often my first thought when tragedy strikes this time of year. I've never understood the purpose of bomb threats. Do people call them in to cause panic? Many people suffer from mental health issues, but I don't understand the point. I must be missing something... Host Amber Athey, a Steamboat Institute Senior Tony Blankley Fellow, interviews John Rich, country music star and owner of Redneck Riviera. John discusses everything from his music career to cancel culture. This conversation is sure to leave you inspired and ready to defend liberty!John Rich is a multi-platinum hit generator and music industry leader whose creative talents are matched only by his business savvy. Whether through a raucous party anthem or a sober reflection on hard times in the heartland, Rich's ability to capture the American zeitgeist in song has made him one of the most successful and prolific entertainers in the music business today. And in 2011, Rich impressed Donald Trump and American TV audiences with his business acumen and leadership skills, winning NBC's The Celebrity Apprentice and raising $1.5 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Now, the multi-faceted Rich is applying his talents to his latest venture, a lifestyle brand called Redneck Riviera that launched in 2014 with an apparel line geared to what he dubs the 'WORK HARD PLAY HARD' crowd. In just 6 short years, the brand offers apparel, a boot line, a bar in the heart of downtown Nashville on Lower Broadway, a jerky line, and an impressive spirits division that serves up three American made whiskies offered nationwide. Along with all of these successes, Rich found time to host a show on Fox Nation, the streaming service for Fox News called The Pursuit! With John Rich that launched in early 2020. The show became one of the services' most popular series and is now showing on Fox Business Prime as one of the flagship shows of the network's new original programming launches of 2021. Note: This episode originally aired on March 4. The honky-tonks on Lower Broadway contribute to Nashville's economy and its reputation as a destination party city. While “NashVegas” has become a playground for bachelorette parties, locals have pushed back — complaining about unruly tourists and under-regulated party vehicles. Things got so out of hand that the word “transportainment” made its first appearance in The New York Times last year. In this episode, host Khalil Ekulona talks to some of the people who make Nashville's nightlife tick, and also asks the question: Who is Nashville's nightlife really for? But first, Congressional hearings about the January 6 insurrection are underway. WPLN political reporter Blaise Gainey joins us with an update about the Tennesseans accused of taking part in the riot at the U.S. Capitol. Guests: Blaise Gainey, WPLN political reporter Gabe Lee, Americana singer-songwriter The Nashville Cowboy Colby Barrett Katie Saddiq, manager and bartender at Rosemary & Beauty Queen Tiffany Taylor, doula and culture writer at 2L's on a Cloud Reginald Pierre, YouTube vlogger

Landon Magee joins the hustlers at Hustle Makes it Happen The Podcast to discuss his successes and failures thus far in the music business. Louisiana native Landon Magee has made big strides toward becoming the newest star in country music. The up and coming star has made quick connections and has a work ethic that will propel him to the next level. Magee started out playing in Louisiana at venues that were quite different than what you would find on Lower Broadway. “Back home, I didn't know anything. I didn't even know anything when I moved to Nashville. I used to play at Daiquiri shops and Mexican restaurants. I never even played a real show and I went to school for two semesters back home, but over that summer break, my mom told me that if I wanted to move to Nashville that now was the time because I wouldn't get that chance again so I gave it a shot” he says. The gigs at the Mexican restaurants will likely no longer be a needed, as he now performs in honky-tonks and barrooms. Just recently he played in St. Louis, at Game 6 Honky Tonk, located just blocks from Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals.
