Prepare yourself for a bone-chilling journey through the unchartered territories of the Wild West! Get ready to feel the sweat on your brow and the grit in your teeth as we traverse from Adobe Walls to Chicken Creek, recounting tales of confrontation, courage, and survival straight from the horse's mouth, Joe Plumber. We kick things off with the horrifying recount of Dave Dudley and Tommy Wallace's brutal deaths, caused by an unexpected Indian uprising. Listen as Plumber narrates their grim fate, and the admirable strength shown by Hannah Olds, a cook and boarding house owner, in the face of such adversity. The tension escalates as we return to Adobe Walls after burying our fallen comrades, only to discover more trouble brewing. We try to keep our spirits high, but the sound of a loud crack sends chills down our spine, leading us to a precarious situation that needs immediate attention. We wrap up with an intriguing exploration of a Daybreak Settlement before the attack of 700 Indians, offering a detailed look at its unique structures. The man on today's podcast is a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. He's from Wisconsin and his hit record was first played by rock and roll station WRIT in Milwaukee. Truck drivers loved him. He's remembered for his hit “Six Days on the Road” and for “Two Six Packs Away” and “Truck Drivin' Son-of-a-Gun.” Dave was born in Spencer, Wisconsin. He wanted to be a professional baseball player but after an arm injury he decided to pursue a music career. Besides selling over a million copies of his hit record, he recorded 70 albums. If you were a radio listener in the 60s, I'm quite sure that you'll remember his hit song. And I believe you'll recall the commercial bit going into the interview.
WILLY NELSON kicks our show off with "ON THE ROAD AGAIN"which sets the theme of traveling songs. JOHN DENVER gives us "COUNTRY ROADS" . JERRY REID IS "EAST BOUND AND DOWN" and ROGER MILLER is "KING OF THE ROAD". Lots more from DAVE DUDLEY, HANK SNOW, LORETTA LYNN, GEORGE STRAIT AND JOHNNY RODRIGUEZ. Hope you enjoy traveling my friends.
On this episode, we sit down with returning guest, Dave Dudley. Dave is the owner and founder of Dudley Construction in Rosemount, Minnesota where he and his lovely bride Michelle reside. He is the father of 4 daughters and grandfather to 9 grandchildren – 1 granddaughter and 8 grandsons. He is actively involved in marriage mentorship and men's ministry at River Valley Church in Apple Valley Minnesota. His passion is discipling men for Christ. He is a spiritual mentor and someone whom I love and respect dearly. If you've read my book “The Brave” you will know him by I call him, Mr. Dave.

In this week's episode we're jumping in the semi and travelling north to get our twang on with Winnipeg's Sean Burns & Lost Country. One of only a handful of traditional country acts playing that city, Burns and the band stayed busy in 2020. In between lockdowns they managed a Bakersfield EP and our feature album this week: an all big rig affair on "We Gotta Lotta Truckin' To Do" (2020). Anchored by Burns' unique and in-your-face delivery (bending notes within an inch of their lives), Lost Country race through a familiar-yet-fresh set of 13 truckin' covers (including one original). Leaning on the legends of this high-energy subgenre, renditions of songs made famous by Dave Dudley, Red Sovine, Del Reeves, Dick Curless and The Willis Brothers will keep your eyes wide and on the road. Recorded at their home away from home in the historic Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club in Winnipeg, "We Gotta Lotta Truckin' To Do" is a twangalicious and infectious slice of Sean Burns & Lost Country live and we couldn't help but include the whole dang thing in this week's show.

Where does the loveable-outlaw image of the professional trucker first come into play in a big way in American culture? Perhaps the earliest notable instance came with Dave Dudley's hit, “Six Days on the Road.” American culture expert Todd Uhlman makes that association in this ongoing "Overdrive's Songs of the Highway" series, part of Overdrive's ongoing 60th anniversary celebration with coverage of trucking history: http://overdriveonline.com/trucking-history “Six Days” remains in contemporary times one of trucking's most popular songs -- a decade ago around Overdrive's 50th anniversary, readers voted the track as the No. 1 trucking song of all time: https://www.overdriveonline.com/channel-19/article/14875984/results-the-top-10-trucking-songs-of-all-time It was initially record by Paul Davis and released in 1961, but it was Dudley who put it on the map with his version in 1963. It reached number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and crossed over at No. 32 on its broader Hot 100 chart. A former trucker, Dudley packed the lyrics with details from the road. The song included references to speeding, popping pills, a “Georgia overdrive,” emitting black exhaust, dodging scales and being behind on his logs. ...

In this week's episode, we're featuring a sensational Capitol compilation of all-truck driving country: "Put The Hammer Down!" (1976). Popularized by the booming baritones of singers like Dave Dudley and Del Reeves in the 60s, truck-driving country music hit a peak in the early-mid 70s in the USA, right around the time of a nationwide fuel shortage and significant spike in CB radio use. CB radio use amongst truckers, however, was oftentimes to get around speed traps and organise resistance against government regulation in capped speed limits and fuel price increases. The half-sung and half-spoken recitation style of truck-driving hitmakers Red Simpson and Red Sovine echoed the sound of a CB radio, and Merle Haggard and Dick Curless spoke to the trucker in plain, relatable lyrics often delivered with revved-up guitars and standout twang. Our feature album showcases those artists and more (most on the Capitol label itself, hence any glaring omissions) in ten songs that epitomise what the American trucker came to represent: a blue-collar hero who lived the American cultural ideals of autonomy, non-conformity and freedom but who had fierce pride in their country and the principles upon which she was founded. Highlights include Haggard's theme song to the TV show of the same name in "Movin' On", Dick Curless' twangy re-recording of "A Tombstone Every Mile", Red Sovine's tearjerker "Phantom 309" and Red Simpson's sense of zeitgeist in "I'm A Truck". A thoroughly enjoyable album.

They call him The Storyteller because he distills life into words. Behind any story worth telling, you'll always find another story. Maybe if we can get behind some of his best stories, we can reverse engineer the alchemy of Tom T. Hall. Maybe we'll find the story about who he is and how he's able to do what he can do with the English language... Probably not but, worst case scenario, it will be an incredibly entertaining waste of time. Beginning with a condensed history of country music radio, we follow Tom T. from his early days as a young DJ into a seemingly effortless realization of his destiny to become one of country music's greatest songwriters ever. This episode is highly recommended for fans of songwriting, arguing about music, Net Neutrality, the music business, Bobby Bare, Dave Dudley, Jimmy C. Newman, Hank Cochran and songs for children. Known as “The Storyteller,” the Grammy winner landed 35 songs in the Top 10 on Billboard’s country chart between 1965 and 1996. Many of those featured Hall as both writer and artist, including “Homecoming,” “Me and Jesus,” “Ravishing Ruby,” “That Song is Driving Me Crazy,” “I Like Beer,” and the #1 hits “A Week in a County Jail,” “The Year That Clayton Delaney Died,” “(Old Dogs, Children and) Watermelon Wine,” “Country Is,” “I Care,” “Faster Horses (The Cowboy and the Poet),” and “I Love,” which also became a hit on the pop chart. Tom T. Hall songs that hit the Top 5 for other artists include “Hello Vietnam” by Johnny Wright, “How I Got to Memphis” and “(Margie’s at) The Lincoln Park Inn” by Bobby Bare, “If I Ever Fall in Love (With a Honky Tonk Girl)” by Faron Young, “Pool Shark” by Dave Dudley, “You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me)” by Johnny Rodriguez, “I’m Not Ready Yet” by George Jones, “Little Bitty” by Alan Jackson, and “Harper Valley P.T.A.,” which Jeannie C. Riley took to the #1 spot on both the country and pop chart, making her the first woman to achieve that feat. Hall was named NSAI Songwriter of the Year in 1972, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1978, joined the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, was honored with the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award in 2010, and earned the prestigious BMI Icon award in 2012.
From existing as only a few trucks on some dirt farm roads to becoming the major source of transport in our nation, the history of trucking is impressive. The story of trucking's past is, in many ways, the story of the American economy. Trucking helped motivate the growth of our roadways, therefore allowing the transport of goods, people and ideas. It helped us endure both World War I and World War II. Trucking also provided opportunities for the rural working class whose livelihood was lost to the growth of big farms. This industry struggled to find its place in early American history, but once it started, it couldn't be stopped. Learn just how that happened in this episode. Under the circumstances, The Coal Men felt more like comfort food, with their gorgeous tones and tight roots rocking structures. Dave Coleman writes pop songs with the story quotient of country songs, so we got “Stones River” about old friends/mentors and a wintry outdoor setting. And “Willy Jett” is a portrait of the demise of a semi-loveable loser. Dave encouraged us to think of it like a little movie, and it was. More story in my favorite song on the new Pushed To The Side album in “The Singer From Louisville,” which channels a piece of Tommy Womack fiction that is drawn from hard experience. Guest host Peter Cooper worked with the Coal Men and other artists to pull together a really nice take on Dave Dudley’s “Six Days On The Road,” which hasn’t been a Nashville Jam in years. Great call and a great job.
Best known for singing a string of successful trucking-themed country songs in the 1960s and 70s, Red Simpson was also a highly influential behind-the-scenes songwriter from Bakersfield, California. Buck Owens recorded more than 30 Simpson originals, including the Top 10 hits “Gonna Have Love,” “Sam’s Place,” and “Kansas City Song.” Additionally, Red penned perennial standards, such as “Close Up the Honky Tonks” and “You Don’t Have Very Far to Go.” As an artist, he released a total of seven albums for Capitol and logged seven charting singles onBillboard’s country rankings, including the Top 40 hits “Roll Truck Roll” and “The Highway Patrol.” He is perhaps best known, however, for singing “I’m a Truck,” which hit the Top 5 in 1972. Simpson played guitar on most of Buck Owens’ recording dates in the mid-1960s, including sessions that produced hits such as “Buckaroo” and “Waitin’ in Your Welfare Line.” He went on to play numerous sessions with Merle Haggard, who referred to Simpson as a “hillbilly hippy.” Merle recorded a couple of Simpson originals on his 1969 album Pride in What I Am, and Red went on to play guitar on Haggard’s classic live LP, Okie From Muskogee. A half dozen other Simpson compositions have been recorded by Haggard, who wrote “A Bar in Bakersfield” in tribute to his old friend. As a songwriter, Simpson enjoyed additional charting singles by Charlie Walker, Wynn Stewart, Junior Brown, and others. His songs have also been recorded by Ferlin Husky, Johnny Paycheck, Wanda Jackson, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Dave Dudley, Roy Clark, Roseanne Cash, Steve Wariner, Lucinda Williams, Alan Jackson, Candi Staton, Dwight Yoakam, and many more. Simpson died on January 8, 2016. This is the final in-depth interview with the California country mainstay Bob Dylan once called "the forgotten man of the Bakersfield Sound."
