fWotD Episode 2952: 1880 Republican National Convention Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 4 June 2025, is 1880 Republican National Convention. The 1880 Republican National Convention convened from June 2 to June 8, 1880, at the Interstate Exposition Building in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Delegates nominated James A. Garfield of Ohio and Chester A. Arthur of New York as the official Republican Party candidates for president and vice president in the 1880 presidential election.Of the 14 men in contention for the Republican nomination, the three strongest leading up to the convention were Ulysses S. Grant, James G. Blaine, and John Sherman. Grant had served two terms as president from 1869 to 1877, and was seeking an unprecedented third term in office. He was backed by the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party, which supported political machines and patronage. Blaine was a senator and former representative from Maine who was backed by the Half-Breed faction of the Republican Party. Sherman, the brother of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman, was serving as Secretary of the Treasury under President Rutherford B. Hayes. A former senator from Ohio, he was backed by delegates who did not support the Stalwarts or Half-Breeds.With 379 votes required to obtain the nomination, on the first ballot Grant received 304 votes, Blaine 285, and Sherman 93. Balloting continued for several days without producing a nominee. After the thirty-fifth ballot, Blaine and Sherman switched their support to a new "dark horse", James Garfield. On the next ballot, Garfield won the nomination with 399 votes, 93 more than Grant. Garfield's Ohio delegation chose Chester A. Arthur, a Stalwart, as Garfield's running mate. Arthur won the vice presidential nomination with 468 votes, and the longest-ever Republican National Convention adjourned. The Garfield–Arthur Republican ticket narrowly defeated Democrats Winfield Scott Hancock and William Hayden English in the 1880 presidential election. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:40 UTC on Wednesday, 4 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 1880 Republican National Convention on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Olivia.

What does it mean to be a Stalwart? In history, it's just a name for political machine pros seeking jobs and being corrupt. But it was more. While telling how Chester Arthur became the nation's most famous fired civil servant, we explain politics in the 19th century. The real battles then were inside the party. The Puritans were a diverse group of evangelically-minded, confessionally reformed pastors of the seventeenth century whose great priority was to glorify God in their personal lives, in their families, and in the churches they served. This week we introduce two lesser-known Puritans from the north of England, Thomas Jolley (or Jollie) and Oliver Heywood, along with some of their brethren. In the crucible of affliction, these men proved the faithfulness of God to those who labour in His harvest fields, even when the harvest is hampered by temptations within and trials without. June 1381- and the peasants revolts slams into London… but what really happened on those crowded and violent streets. The Story of London finally gets to examine the opening part of a terrible few days, where we see far from being angry yokels falling upon an unsuspecting city, rather it is the residents of London who use this as an excuse to settle old scores. From neighbour turning on neighbour in Southwark, from the suburbs of Smithfield, to the Temple and the Savoy, London erupted in flame and destruction, as buildings were set alight, torn down and people murdered.Yet what role did the Mayor and Aldermen play in all of this? Stalwarts opposed to the violence? Secret facilitators? Or men trying to thread an impossible needle, desperately seeking to stay one jump ahead of the terrible violence?
When Chuck Mead was a young boy, he and his sister moved with their parents to Lawrence, Kansas. He got a drum kit as a gift when he was 12, and soon after started playing in the family's band. It was made up of his mom, his dad, his grandparents and uncles who played country and western, and Chuck would also sing songs by Carl Perkins and Elvis. An uncle taught Chuck how to play guitar and by high school, he was playing in bands with friends. He continued to play while attending The University of Kansas, still having a fondness for rockabilly and country, but was also listening to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Springsteen and even the Ramones. His band, The Homestead Grays, recorded a couple of records and after college, Chuck moved to Nashville. He played in the window of Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and before long, he and Gary Bennett formed BR549. Crowds packed in to see them play Robert's on Lower Broadway. They were an enormous hit, and soon became famous worldwide. A few weeks after seeing him with his current band, The Stalwarts, I had the pleasure of talking with the extremely talented, and very very funny, Chuck Mead.Photo by Joshua Black Wilkins. Welcome to Countdown 2024 ... there are now 56 days until the election. We have conservative political titans Bill Kristol and Stuart Stevens coming up on today's show ... where the focus will be all about debate night ... in what could prove to be one of the most pivotal nights of this presidential campaign. But first let's take a quick spin around the political world for the latest.... Tonight's debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in Philadelphia is the ONLY one scheduled before election day ... so the stakes are especially high. In a likely attempt to get under the skin of the former president, Vice President Harris is bringing two former Trump White House staffers to the debate tonight, as her guests. One of them is former Trump communications director Anthony Scaramucci ... we'll be talking with The Mooch here on Countdown on Friday! Donald Trump called into NBC News this morning for a brief interview ... saying he "doesn't know what to expect" from Harris tonight, given her recently changing positions on several key issues. Trump campaign sources say the former president won't try to hit Harris for "flip-flopping," ... but rather attempt to tie her to her most liberal positions on issues like immigration and fracking. In some non-presidential campaign political news ... the House Republican majority put forward a spending bill that would keep the federal government up-and-running ... in exchange for approving a bill that would require voters to present proof of American citizenship. It now looks like that gambit will fail ... and the government will be in danger of shutting down at the end of this month. The record for a TV audience watching a presidential debate came in 2016 when Hillary Clinton squared off against Donald Trump ... and an estimated 84-million Americans tuned in. Tonight's Trump-Harris debate could eclipse that. Today's guests on Countdown:-Bill Kristol has been a presence in national Republican politics since 1970 when he was an intern at the Nixon White House. He went on to work in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations ... and eventually founded The Weekly Standard. Kristol now finds himself at The Bulwark. -Stuart Stevens was in the leadership of George W. Bush's 2000 campaign and helped to prep the eventual president (and eventual vice president Dick Cheney) for debates that year ... Stevens has served as a media consultant to countless Republican campaigns, and is now an advisor to the Lincoln Project.
Also, was könnt ihr von Garfield lernen? Break 2: INGLES 4 STORY 4: Women get same exercise benefits as men but with less effort: study A recent study has found that women can reap the same benefits from exercise as men, but with less effort required. This research identified a "gender gap" in physical exertion, revealing that women can exercise less frequently than men and still achieve greater cardiovascular gains. The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), utilized data from over 400,000 U.S. adults collected between 1997 and 2019 by the National Health Interview Survey. The results showed that regular physical activity reduced mortality risk by 24% in women and 15% in men. Notably, the research indicated that men need to engage in moderate to vigorous activities like brisk walking or cycling for about five hours per week to reach their maximal survival benefit. In contrast, women can attain the same benefit with just two-and-a-half hours of similar activity per week. When it comes to weightlifting and other muscle-strengthening exercises, men peak at three sessions per week, while women only need one. Women also reach maximal survival benefit at 140 minutes of exercise per week, whereas men require twice that amount. STORY 5: Did religious people cope much better during the pandemic? A University of Cambridge study found that religious individuals coped better with the Covid-19 pandemic than non-religious ones. The mental health decline was 60% worse for non-believers. The research, which analyzed data from the UK and US, showed that those with strong religious beliefs experienced less unhappiness during the pandemic. The study suggests that religion can bolster self-esteem and coping skills in times of crisis. However, the benefits of religion were not observed in areas with strict lockdowns, indicating the importance of access to places of worship. The research highlights the role of religious faith in building resilience and providing hope during challenging times. STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food longevity. ***LEAH MCGRATH*** We'll have final thoughts after this. Victorian Stalwarts, Chad Mclauchlan, and Tim Edwards have been entrenched in the grassroots level of longboarding for the past 15 + years in Victoria, particularly on the West Coast (Bellarine Peninsula). Since meeting at a club comp both have forged a strong surfing friendship that sees them both inspiring each other and the broader surfing community around them. Coming from quite different surfing backgrounds Chad and Tim find themselves predominantly riding single fins and Oldmals nowadays, both talk to us about the current longboard culture in Victoria, its influential characters, recent local history, and where the future is potentially headed. For many years both have been Nettleton surfboard ambassadors and by looking at the boards they ride and how they surf them, it's clear that both have been influenced by different people and different board designs. Chad and Tim continue to compete in Victoria and both enjoy heading up the east coast of Australia doing the occasional competitions but often haunting the normal longboard meccas of Noosa and Crescent. Long labeled the freezing and sleepy state for Longboarding, the boys shed light and warmth on the healthy longboard community down there in Vic. Tim is the current over 40 Logger State Champion and Over 45 Victorian Old Mal Champion, whilst Chad is the current Runner Up Under 40 Logger State Champion and finalist in many Oldmal events.

2010 was a big year for bangers. The Australian dance music scene in particular, was thriving. Stalwarts like The Presets and Cut Copy were kicking it, and a new breed of beat makers were coming up, soundtracking hedonistic summer days and big festival party nights. This was the year Bag Raiders released their debut album, and on it's 10th anniversary I invited the duo to Take 5 and go back. Jack and Chris joined me for the final Take 5 for Ausmusic Month, and so I thought it'd be fun to stay local, and celebrate the incredible talent in our own backyard. From supermarket crossover hits, to deep club bangers, this is a glorious celebration of one very bright year in Australian music.
