Eleanor Goldfield hosts this week's Project Censored Show. Her first guest, Ben Price, speaks about the concept of “rights of nature” and how a legal system based on the control of “property” necessarily subordinates both the rights of humans and the rights of nature. In the second half of the program, Maya Schenwar and Kim Wilson examine the effects of the U.S. prison system on the families of prisoners and explain why “prisons are the canaries in the coal mine.” GUESTS: Ben Price is the education director at the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (www.CELDF.org). Maya Schenwar and Kim Wilson are the coeditors of the 2024 book, “We Grow the World Together,” a collection of essays on the impact of imprisonment on families — especially the children of prisoners. The post Rights of Humans, Rights of Nature / Incarceration and Families appeared first on KPFA.

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Crooked Eyed Tommy on his new project with Tomislav GolubanIt's not very often that an old-school Croatian harmonica player hooks up with a West Coast guitarist. In fact, this collaboration is partially supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. Tomislav Goluban, whose surname translates to Pigeon in English, has been inspired by harmonica masters Sonny Boy Williamson, Paul Butterfield, Kim Wilson, Gary Primich, Sonny Terry, and Joe Filisko. His twenty-year music career includes 15 studio albums. Tomislav began playing harp in 1997 and released his debut recording, “Pigeon's Flight,” in 2005. http://www.makingascene.org

"To work in his garden was one of his most respectable pleasures."—Pride and PrejudiceThe garden may be where Charlotte sends Mr. Collins when she tires of him, but for many of Jane Austen's heroines, it's a place of repose and reflection. Nature is an important and recurring theme in Austen's novels and a meaningful part of her own life. In this episode, author Kim Wilson takes us on a tour of the many types of Regency-era gardens and greenery that inspired Austen and her work. This episode is a slightly abridged version of the videocast available on our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4XSBUImU0Y.For audio-only listeners, a selection of images discussed in the episode can be found in the transcript on our website: https://jasna.org/austen/podcast/ep20.Kim Wilson is a writer and speaker, a life member of the Jane Austen Society of North America, and a past regional coordinator for JASNA's Wisconsin Region. In this episode of Speaking Out of Place podcast Professor David Palumbo-Liu talks with Maya Schenwar and Kim Wilson on their new book, We Grow the World Together: Parenting Toward Abolition. They talk about what inspired them to commission a wide range of amazing activists, artists, scholars, and organizers to write whatever came to their minds about the topic of parenting and abolition. The result is a rich mosaic of unique insights expressed in diverse forms, but each one touching deeply on the interdependency of living beings and the importance of caregiving in all its forms. It is this commitment that leads us always to imagine an abolitionist future for ourselves, and all children.Maya Schenwar is Truthout's editor-in-chief, author of Locked Down, Locked Out: Why Prison Doesn't Work and How We Can Do Better, and co-editor of Who Do You Serve, Who Do you Protect? She is the co-founder, cohost, and producer of Beyond Prisons, a podcast on incarceration and prison abolition. A social scientist by training, Dr. Wilson has a PhD in Urban Affairs and Public Policy, and her work focuses on examining the interconnected functioning of systems, including poverty, racism, ableism, and heteropatriarchy, within a carceral structure. Her work delves into the extension and expansion of these systems beyond their physical manifestations of cages and fences, to reveal how carcerality is imbued in policy and practice. A conversation with Kim Wilson and Steve Strongman about "Struck Down", the latest recording by the Fabulous Thunderbirds - https://fabulousthunderbirds.com & https://www.stevestrongman.com
Abolition can perhaps best be understood as a collection of creative and complex acts of world-building—what kind of world would we need to build in order to have no slavery? our forebears asked. And what kind of world could we begin to create today that would render prisons and police and militarism obsolete, predation and exploitation relics of a cruel past? Abolition is not simply a policy, it's an entire politics—the politics of realizing our freedom dreams by building the world we want and need. All of us—workers, teachers, nurses, midwives, parents—can reimagine and rebuild our worlds. Everything can change. And abolition work—changing everything—is the practice of freedom. We're joined Under the Tree by Maya Schenwar and Kim Wilson, co-editors of We Grow Together: Parenting Toward Abolition, an anthology focussed on connecting liberatory parenting and movements for freedom.
Bassist, singer and songwriter Richard “RW” Grigsby, has logged several lifetimes on the road, and his early rock and roll roots (Rome, GA near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains) burst out like another famous Richard from Georgia on “Road Scholar,” his story of a musician who has spent too much time on the road, working for too little pay. It's sung by Red's Blues drummer Tim Wilbur, a pro's pro (2017 Sacramento Music Awards and Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame member), who brought creative percussion ideas -- maracas AND the entire group thigh-slapping percussion. “We sat in chairs in a circle and slapped our thighs at certain points in the song to add accent,” laughs Beth. “Jackknifed” (co-authored with fellow road warrior Mark Hummel) continues the road theme with bio notes from their Golden State-Lone Star Blues Revue adventures. RW played with Carlene Carter, Gary Primich, Mike Morgan & The Crawl, Finger Taylor, Mark Hummel's Golden State Lone Star Revue w/Anson Funderburgh & Little Charlie, JamesCotton & all the Harmonica Blowouts since 2008-2019( Magic, Lee Oskar, Kim Wilson, Billy Boy, Jason Ricci, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Estrin, John Primer, Duke, Billy Flynn, Elvin, Gravenities, Ron Thompson, Harman, Rod Piazza & many others) 2014 Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Award (BMA) winner bassist RW Grigsby has been playing since he was 14 years old and began his professional career when still a teenager. He's toured the U.S., Canada and Europe since the '80s, and currently juggles playing with Red's Blues, Mark Hummel & the Blues Survivors and The Golden State/Lone Star Blues Revue. He played and recorded with Texas blues stars Gary Primich and Black Top Records' Mike Morgan and the Crawl in the 1990s. RW is the bassist on the 2014 Grammy-nominated and BMA-winning CD, Remembering Little Walter. He was nominated for a BMA “Best Bassist” Award in 2017 and was inducted into the Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds are an American treasure, formed in Austin, Texas in 1974, the band developed an infectious blend of blues and rock that hit pay dirt with songs like “Tuff Enuff” and “Wrap it Up” from 1986. The group is celebrating their 50th anniversary with the release of Struck Down, their first new material in eight years. The record features contributions from big name artists like Billy Gibbons, Bonnie Raitt, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal and Elvin Bishop. The one constant over the 50 years has been powerhouse vocalist Kim Wilson. He tells us why he thinks this is the band's best album to date, plus how he hooked up with the famous guests on the album.
