Send us a textOn this weeks episode, we take a listen to a true Texas legend, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and his 1993, Spinning Around the Sun.With his high, lonesome voice, Jimmy Dale embodies the very essence of that land from which he hails, the Texas Panhandle. Even thought he was in his forties when his first solo album was recorded, he had already made his mark on the musical landscape of the Lone Star State, having been in the legendary Flatlanders (along with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock) and the Hub City Movers (the first band to play the Armadillo World Headquarters). By the time he recorded his fourth solo outing, Spinning Around the Sun, Jimmie Dale had found his voice. Hailed as his break out LP, Jimmie Dale sings his heart out on songs he penned and a choice selections of tunes written by other notable songwriters, and features fantastic duet with Lucinda Williams. Spinning Around the Sun is a remarkable album filled with songs of beauty and heartbreak, earning him his first of three Grammy nominations. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.
BMG recording artist/singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist A.J. Croce's new 11-track album, "Heart of the Eternal," will be released on March 7. Produced by Shooter Jennings (Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker), "Heart of the Eternal" will feature a selection of songs that journey from psychedelia to Philadelphia soul to Latin-infused jazz-pop. Croce, son of legendary singer/songwriter Jim Croce, has toured with/collaborated with such legends and luminaries as B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Leon Russell, Allen Toussaint, Neville Brothers, Bela Fleck and Ry Cooder, to name a few, all while building up an acclaimed catalog that blurs the boundaries between blues, soul, rock & roll, Americana, and much more. In conjunction with "Heart of the Eternal," Croce's upcoming yearlong "Heart of The Eternal Tour" will kick off nationwide on February 20 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, through April 6 at the Opera House in Lexington, Kentucky (check A.J.'s website and local listings for additional performances to be announced in 2025). Tickets can be purchased for the "Heart of The Eternal Tour" at www.ajcrocemusic.com "Heart of the Eternal" is the latest collection of Croce's songwriting and heart-on-sleeve emotion -- the follow up to his critically lauded cover album "By Request" -his first original body of work since 2017's "Just Like Medicine," which was hailed as "brilliant" by No Depression and a "fluid expression of sorrow and gratitude" by Pop Matters. Says Croce: "I've always felt that music is the heart of our humanity. It's the purest way to connect to one another. Every songwriter I've ever met has told me that they don't know where their greatest songs have come from. Maybe it's our dreams or subconscious that allow us to draw from that eternal well of creativity. I don't know the answer but I'm always looking for it. While stylistically diverse, this album is my search for the heart of the eternal." Recorded at the Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, California, Croce's 11th studio album features bassist David Barard (a Grammy-winner who performed with Dr. John for nearly four decades), drummer Gary Mallaber (whose credits include Van Morrison's Moondance and Tupelo Honey), and guitarist James Pennebaker (Delbert McClinton, Jimmie Dale Gilmore). The album was completed during Croce's downtime from his ongoing "Croce Plays Croce" tour-a widely celebrated run in which he performs classic songs from his late father Jim, along with his own material and a number of specially curated covers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Back in 2018, LA roots-punk pioneer Dave Alvin and cosmic country slayer Jimmie Dale Gilmore wrote their first album together to great fanfare and kindled their lifelong friendship. The duo have announced a new full-length recording, TexiCali, coming in June that promises to deliver 11 trippy tracks, culled from the hearts of these two storytellers and providing a sonic tapestry across their home states. “We're Still Here” celebrates their bond.

On this episode of Tent Show Radio, host & New York Times best-selling author Michael Perry and his band The Long Beds hit the Big Top stage. Michael Perry 's original songs are a direct reflection of his life experiences. Raised in rural Wisconsin by farmers, preachers, and tough country women, his songs reflect "certain wisdoms" available only from whistlers, frauds, and sinners. Ranging from straight-up twang to churchly harmonies and populated by characters drawn straight from rural and small-town America, they launch from places like the overpass outside Perry's beloved hometown of New Auburn, Wisconsin (population currently 562), a gospel service in a granary, and the kitchen floor of a woman about to drop a world of hurt on her drunken husband. Raised in a church so austere that hymns were sung with no choir, no accompaniment, and no church (the congregation met in a farmhouse and sat on straight-backed wooden chairs,) Perry and his brother learned to sit side-by-side and work out harmonies on the fly. Those Sunday mornings instilled in Perry a love of singing “clear and pure” that can be heard throughout all of his recordings. Perry began writing music in the early 1990s as a way to break up all-night typing sessions when he was struggling to survive on prose. Eventually, a musician friend invited him to play a coffee shop gig. Since then, Michael has released 4 albums, several singles, and toured - backed by a collection of renowned musicians who have performed on numerous stages throughout the world (including The Tonight Show, Austin City Limits, and Eaux Claires festival) and worked with a host of artists, including Bon Iver, S. Carey, The Staves, Miley Cyrus, Lizzo, Field Report, The Tallest Man on Earth, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and many more. Every Long Beds show is built on roughneck ballads and freight train rockers interspersed with hilarious off-the-cuff tales from Mike's diverse experience as a Wisconsin farm kid turned cowboy turned nurse turned best-selling author. The new album, “Somewhere in West Texas” by Al Staehely is full of heart, humor, and fun. This recording is a long overdue, surprising, genre-leaping addition to the catalog of an iconic rock star. AUSTIN CONSIGLIEREOLD NO. 1 by Guy Clark (RCA, 1975)Guy Clark's farmhouse was ground zero for a whole generation of America's finest songwriters. Check out the scene in the “Outlaw Country” doc, Heartworn Highways, with the babyfaced Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and Guy harmonizing and trading songs and stories at the kitchen table. This was a summit meeting of Towne Van Zandt's Gospel spreaders keeping the flame of devotion burning- and Guy, Towne's best friend, was John the Baptist. Or, watch that David Letterman clip, 24 years later, with Guy, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Steve, and Rodney standing up there like Mount Rushmore, singing “Desperadoes Waiting for a Train”, and you realize that the gospel seeds that had been spread in the 70's had flowered across the nation. Well, that signature song appears on this, Guy's debut album, and it's like encountering the Dead Sea Scrolls - the original rendition. Add to this the elegiac, definitive version of L.A. Freeway - the song Jerry Jeff made into a folk-rock hit - (with my high school buddy, Jon Simons on harp), and you begin to intuit that you're listening to history being made - and, oddly, it still sounds brand new.To quote the liner notes in Apple Music, a Guy Clark song…”isn't as loose as Walker, or as poetic as Townes Van Zandt, but his songs were the best built.” In 2006, this professional luthier put out the album “Workbench Songs” who's title characterizes his steady carpenter's hand. It was nominated for best Contemporary Folk/Americana Grammy. By this time the much covered consigliere of Austin was a universally acknowledged master and national treasure. In 2019 Steve Earle recorded an album of his mentor's songs and I made the pilgrimage to Amoeba Records to get my copy signed and my picture taken with the man who knew the man who wrote these songs.

PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about the canonical playlist that's part of every Independence Day fireworks display, the time Scott accidentally hit Lee Greenwood in the face with a water balloon, and how our Patreon supporters can get the chance to get their hands on one of the very first copies of Dave Alvin's forthcoming book New Highway. PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with "Fourth of July" composer Dave Alvin on the Fourth of July! ABOUT DAVE ALVIN:Grammy-winning artist, musician, songwriter, poet, and roots music pioneer Dave Alvin launched his professional career when he and his brother Phil founded the Downey, California, based group The Blasters. Blending rockabilly and R&B, Dave became the band's primary songwriter, penning classics such as “Marie, Marie,” “American Music,” “Border Radio,” “Jubilee Train,” “Little Honey,” “Dark Night,” and “Long White Cadillac,” which later became a Top 40 country hit for Dwight Yoakam. After a brief stint as a member of the band X, Dave launched a solo career and continued to craft critically-acclaimed songs that defy genre, including “Fourth of July,” “Haley's Comet,” “Dry River,” “King of California,” “Abilene,” “Ashgrove,” “Harlan County Line,” “Johnny Ace is Dead,” and “Downey to Lubbock,” a collaboration with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Dave's songs have been covered by Los Lobos, Little Milton, Buckwheat Zydeko, Shakin' Stevens, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, James McMurtry, and others. Additionally, his music has been featured on a number of TV soundtracks, including Justified and The Sopranos.
Joe Ely, Adam Carroll, and Willis Alan Ramsey. What do these three have in common? They're all born and raised in Texas and they have each released fantastic albums that are uniquely Texan. Joe Ely's 1978 album "Honky Tonk Masquerade" is a mixture of old school country, with a touch of zydeco and norteno mixed in, and a collection of songs written by Ely and his Lubbock bandmates, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. Adam Carroll's first album, South of Town, is a debut album by an excellent songwriter who seems wiser than his then 23 years old. He is like an updated version of Bob Dylan from the Freewheelin' days. And Willis Alan Ramsey's so far only release is a classic, a touchstone for many Texas artists to come, with songs that are almost impossible to categorize. We hope you enjoy this little window into the world of these great Texas songwriters and performers.

Nashville-based husband-and-wife duo Mike T. Lewis and MaryBeth Zamer, known on stage as The Twangtown Paramours, have made a name for themselves defying boundaries with their award-winning catalogue of Americana, folk, and blues anthems. With a slew of accolades for their first two acoustic full-length albums, they've earned a loyal following, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life. They don't take themselves, or the world, too seriously. Now poised to release their third full-length album, Double Down on a Bad Thing, The Twangtown Paramours are shifting gears to showcase a full band, electric, groove-oriented, upbeat, soul-infused, and retro blues sound. “We want people to have fun, to cheer up, to dance, and to start sporting a positive attitude, dammit,” says Mike. Hit songwriter, session musician, and producer Mike Lewis was born in NYC, but his sound is informed by a mix of experiences across the country's major music centers, including NYC, L.A., Austin, and Nashville. He began learning classical and jazz guitar at age eight, studying under Leonid Bolotine, William Matthews, and Barry Galbraith, before earning degrees at Columbia in New York City and the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. He wrote a #1 platinum pop hit ranked the 2nd biggest-selling female ballad of all time in Korea, and occasionally plays upright bass for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Born in Washington D.C., lead singer MaryBeth Zamer was raised on a mix of opera and American songbook music, singing along to Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald, before discovering Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, and the blues in high school. A fixture in the Washington, D.C. club scene for years, MaryBeth performed with popular local cover band, Ignition and sang backup vocals for Eva Cassidy's band, Method Actor. “Eva was a huge influence on my singing style,” MaryBeth says. “She taught me to go beyond having fun and hitting the right notes, to sing in a way that conveys real emotion.” MaryBeth and Mike met and started dating in 2009, while both were working on separate musical projects. “The relationship came first,” says MaryBeth, “but I kept hearing songs he'd written that I loved, and I wanted to add my own vocal spin to them. I felt like I could interpret and deliver Mike's songs the way he intended them to be.” The Twangtown Paramours released their debut self-titled album via Inside Edge Records just a year later in 2010, a well-received, pop-infused folk album that rose to #11 on the Folk charts. In 2012, they released their second full-length project, The Promise of Friday Night, a narrative-driven, acoustic folk album that hit #2 on the Folk charts, #150 on the Americana charts, and #7 on Deep Roots Magazine's top 50 albums of 2012. In the following years, the pair became three-time finalists at the Kerrville New Folk Competition in Kerrville, TX and winners of the Wildflower Contest in Richardson, TX. They also had the honor to open for major acts such as Joe Ely, Claire Lynch, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Older sister Eleanor is half of the duo “The Mastersons” with her husband Chris. She's also toured with Steve Earle for years, and worked with Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings on the recent album by Tanya Tucker “While I'm Living.” Bonnie is an accomplished musician herself living in Austin Texas, and has worked with artists like Hayes Carll, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Aaron Lee Tasjan to name a few. They recently teamed up to record an album together, and it sounds phenomenal. I had a chance to chat with them about the album, I hope ya dig it!

She keeps the legacy of her husband the late Walter Hyatt going, through King Tears Music which she heads. She manages the catalog of Walter Hyatt and his influential Uncle Walt's Band. Uncle Walt's Band included Walter Hyatt, Champ Hood and David Ball. They made some truly exceptional recordings with unique songs and influenced some renowned artists: Marcia Ball, Lucinda Williams and some of our past guests: Lyle Lovett, Willis Alan Ramsey and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Walter Hyatt sadly passed away in 1996 and the following year Austin City Limits broadcast a tribute featuring Lyle Lovett, Willis Alan Ramsey, David Ball, Champ Hood, Marcia Ball, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Junior Brown, David Halley, Allison Moorer and Shawn Colvin. On October 1, 2021 Omnivore Records is releasing the 11 songs from that ACL broadcast on CD and digital. Also included will be songs that didn't get aired and some previously unreleased Walter Hyatt recordings. The release is entitled "Mighty Fine: An Austin City Limits Tribute to Walter Hyatt." Heidi Hyatt makes a great interview, and we hope you enjoy. Do yourself a favor and check out the album. You'll be very glad you did. Our guest today is Jimmie Dale Gilmore, a Texas music icon who's been writing and playing songs for more than 50 years. Most folks know Gilmore best from his work with The Flatlanders, the legendary trio of Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, and, of course, Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The Flatlanders just released a new country music album called Treasure of Love, their first album of new recordings in more than 12 years. Fellow Flatlander Butch Hancock had this to say about Jimmie Dale: “From swapping songs sitting on some floor after midnight in Lubbock, Texas, to stage after stage from Italy to New Zealand, Jimmie's voice still echoes the miles and smiles The Flatlanders have shared.” The 15 tracks on Treasure of Love revisit songs the guys have enjoyed playing since the early days. All The Lilacs In Ohio". Su versión junto a Rodney Crowell de "I Ain’t Living Long Like This" es soberbia. On Top Of The World”. Escuchar audio
Songs and Music from She's the One que Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers pusieron en el mercado en 1996 será reeditada a primeros de julio con cuatro temas inéditos. On Top Of The World". Escuchar audio
During the 1980s and 1990s, DJ Andy Kershaw travelled around Africa and the Americas searching out great music and taping it on his Walkman Pro, a new broadcast-quality cassette recorder that was bringing about a revolution in mobile recording. He also used it to capture his celebrated Kitchen Sessions, held in his small flat in Crouch End. In this episode, Andy meets Malian blues man Ali Farka Touré on a boat on the Niger and wins a bottle of BBQ sauce at Fred's Lounge in Louisiana whilst enjoying some live cajun music from the Mamou Cajun Band. We witness the breakneck speed of Scottish accordionist Phil Cunningham and banjo player Gary Petersen in an impromptu session in a pub in Shetland and we take a look at the iconic Cuban song Guantanamera, with versions by Cuarteto Iglesias on a roof top in Cuba and Celina Gonzales in Andy's Crouch End kitchen. Also from the kitchen we have vintage sessions from Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore and English psychedelicists, Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians. Plus Andy dusts off the Walkman Pro to records a brand new session with folk singer-songwriter and guitarist Steve Tilston. Producer: Martin Webb

Taylor spent his earliest years in St. Louis, MO before moving to Cheyenne, WY with his family as a kid. At the age of nine, he became enamored with the guitar, and discovered he was pretty good at it too. He was invited to tour with a blues band right out of high school and soon after was invited to be the touring guitarist with award winning Trace-Blues artist, Otis Taylor. 2019 saw the release of Taylor Scott Band's latest studio album, All We Have. It was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. In support of the album, he toured with his band opening for Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Along the way, Scott and his band recorded their live set at the Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA. That was released on all streaming platforms back in September, 2020. In our conversation, we chat about all of this plus his personal story, and what it's like to finally get to a level where you have a team (booking agent, manager etc.) helping push your music. Welcome back to The Neon Eon. We kick off February being joined by singer-songwriter Terry McBride. McBride began making a name for himself as a bass player playing for the likes of Dale McBride (his father), Delbert McClinton, Rosie Flores, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and others down in his native Texas before bursting onto the scene as the lead vocalist and chief lyricist of the trio McBride & The Ride. Later, he'd be recognized as a hit songwriter for the likes of Brooks & Dunn and Reba McEntire. During this conversation, we talk about those early Texas roots, establishing McBride & The Ride, hanging out with Guy Clark, recording the breakout album Sacred Ground, hitting it off with Ronnie Dunn, writing "If You See Him/If You See Her," and making his way back to recording albums once more. Like and Follow The Neon Eon on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Patreon. Today's theme music is "Rollin'" by Lauren Duski.

In The Name of God”. A janitor whose love of movies got him to appear in the Big Lebowski and a musical virtuoso who went on to win a Grammy with Old Crow Medicine Show. This is episode 38 of Caffe Lena: 60 Years of Song . Thank you to Sarah at the Caffe for the list of songs and artists for the feature. Jimmie Dale Gilmore recorded his first album in 1972 and took a break that lasted for 16 years. During that time he joined an ashram in New Orleans and worked as a janitor in a synagogue in Denver. For the film buff, you may notice he randomly appeared in movies like The Thing Called Love, Parkland, and The Big Lebowski. Chance McCoy is a true musical virtuoso. In one weekend alone, he took home top honors for fiddle, banjo, and dulcimer at the prestigious West Virginia State Championships. He tried touring with his first band but came home with less money each time, supporting himself and his son with food stamps and teaching fiddle lessons. Then he got a call asking him to audition for Old Crow Medicine

Go to harrys.com/burning to start shaving better today! I am incredibly excited that I got to talk to Dave Alvin. I first heard the Blasters, the band he formed with his brother Phil in 1979 or so, 30 years ago, in 1990, when a compilation called The Blasters Collection came out, and I was just blown away. Their music was a mix of rockabilly, blues, country, hillbilly music, Forties jump blues and Fifties R&B – they basically threw everything into a blender and somehow turned it into one thing, all driven by Dave Alvin’s lead guitar and Bill Bateman’s massive drums, which could really be a whole conversation on their own. Dave Alvin’s made close to twenty albums since leaving the Blasters, including a couple with Phil in the last few years but also a whole string of records with his band the Guilty Men, some collaborations with country singer Jimmie Dale Gilmore and rockabilly singer Sonny Burgess, and guest appearances on a million things, because he’s a kick-ass guitar player with a unique style and sound that a lot of people want to use for things. And now he’s got a new band called the Third Mind, which was the impetus for this interview. They don’t really sound like anything else he’s done before – their music is highly improvisatory psychedelic rock, with some touches of very early jazz-rock fusion thrown in there, too. So if you were wondering how a roots-rock semi-traditionalist singer-songwriter winds up on this podcast, well, that’s how. This conversation is really fascinating, and goes down a lot of pathways I wasn’t expecting. We talk about Robert Johnson, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Dick Dale, Sun Records, growing up in California…Dave Alvin’s a hell of a sharp guy who knows a lot about music, and I had a fantastic time talking to him. Jason's guests this week on the pod are Micheal Chernus and Emily Simoness, a married couple who join him to take a very deep dive into all the wonderful, like, greatness, man, of 'The Big Lebowski'. Michael's a Julliard-trained stage, TV, and film actor currently appearing on TV as speechwriter Ken Rosey opposite Edie Falco on the CBS series 'Tommy'. You might have also seen him as Piper's brother Cal Chapman on 'Orange Is The New Black' or playing Congressman Edward Tavner in Amazon's 'Patriot'. Michael's movie roles include portraying The Tinkerer, the original McGyver, in Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming; playing Tom Hanks' first mate Shane Murphy in the excellent Paul Greengrass film 'Captain Phillips'; and appearing opposite Will Smith in 2012's 'Men In Black 3". The other half of this power-couple, Emily, is the founder and executive Director of SPACE on Ryder Farm, a non-profit artistic residency program and organic farm located on the grounds of a 225-year-old family homestead in Putnam County, New York. But outside their professional accomplishments, they're just wonderful midwestern good people, whose self-effacing humor and innate smarts you'll hear on display in the podcast as we discuss the Coen Brother's 'The Big Lebowski'. ABOUT THE MOVIE: The Big Lebowski (/ləˈbaʊski/) is a 1998 crime comedy film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It stars Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, a Los Angeles slacker and avid bowler. He is assaulted as a result of mistaken identity, after which The Dude learns that a millionaire (also named Jeffrey Lebowski) was the intended victim. The millionaire Lebowski's trophy wife is kidnapped, and he commissions The Dude to deliver the ransom to secure her release; the plan goes awry when the Dude's friend Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) schemes to keep the ransom money. Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, David Huddleston, John Turturro and Philip Seymour Hoffman also appear, in supporting roles. The film is loosely inspired by the work of Raymond Chandler. Joel Coen stated, "We wanted to do a Chandler kind of story – how it moves episodically, and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that's ultimately unimportant."[4] The original score was composed by Carter Burwell, a longtime collaborator of the Coen brothers. The Big Lebowski was a disappointment at the U.S. box office and received mixed reviews at the time of its release. Over time, reviews have become largely positive, and the film has become a cult favorite,[5] noted for its eccentric characters, comedic dream sequences, idiosyncratic dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack.[6] In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[7][8] A spin-off based on John Turturro's character, titled The Jesus Rolls, was released in 2019 with Turturro also acting as writer and director. Cast Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski. Bridges had heard or was told by the Coen brothers that they had written a screenplay for him. John Goodman as Walter Sobchak; a Vietnam veteran and bowling partner and friend of "The Dude." Walter was based, in part, on screenwriter and director John Milius. Julianne Moore as Maude Lebowski; Jeffrey "The Big" Lebowski's daughter, a feminist and an avant-garde artist. Steve Buscemi as Theodore Donald "Donny" Kerabatsos; a bowling partner and friend of "The Dude." Walter's repeated response, "Shut the fuck up, Donny!" is a reference to Fargo, in which Buscemi's character was constantly talking and interrupting conversations when he is not paying attention to the story. David Huddleston as Jeffrey "The Big" Lebowski; a millionaire philanthropist for whom "The Dude" is mistaken. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Brandt; Jeffrey "The Big" Lebowski's executive assistant Tara Reid as Bunny Lebowski; Jeffrey "The Big" Lebowski's blonde 20s-something trophy wife and former porn video performer (“Log Jammin’”) for Jackie Treehorn Productions. According to Reid, Charlize Theron also tried out for the role. Philip Moon as Woo; a Jackie Treehorn thug Mark Pellegrino as the Blond Treehorn thug Peter Stormare, Torsten Voges, and Flea as Uli Kunkel/Karl Hungus, Franz, and Kieffer, the German nihilists; Uli originated on the set of Fargo between Ethan Coen and Stormare, who often spoke in a mock German accent. Jimmie Dale Gilmore as Smokey; a hippie bowler in the league whom Walter threatens at gunpoint over an attempt to mark his frame an eight despite letting his foot move over the alley line Jack Kehler as Marty; The Dude's landlord, who is also a performance artist John Turturro as Jesus Quintana. The Coen brothers let Turturro come up with a lot of his own ideas for the character, like towel-shining the bowling ball and the scene where he dances backward from his bowling alley line, which he says was inspired by Muhammad Ali. David Thewlis as Knox Harrington, an avant-garde videographer-friend of Maude Lebowski Sam Elliott as The Stranger, a smooth-talking urban cowboy who also serves as the narrator of the film Ben Gazzara as big-time porn video producer Jackie Treehorn, to whom Bunny Lebowski owes money Jon Polito as Da Fino, a private dick who mistakes the Dude for a "brother shamus", hired by Bunny's family to return her to them Leon Russom as the Malibu police chief Aimee Mann as Nihilist Woman/Franz's Girlfriend who donates her amputated green nail-polished little toe (proof of Bunny Lebowski's kidnapping) Lu Elrod coffee shop waitress SOUNDTRACK The original score was composed by Carter Burwell, a veteran of all the Coen Brothers' films. While the Coens were writing the screenplay they had Kenny Rogers' "Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition Was in)", the Gipsy Kings' cover of "Hotel California", and several Creedence Clearwater Revival songs in mind.[25] They asked T-Bone Burnett (who would later work with the Coens on O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Inside Llewyn Davis) to pick songs for the soundtrack of the film. They knew that they wanted different genres of music from different times but, as Joel remembers, "T-Bone even came up with some far-out Henry Mancini and Yma Sumac."[26] Burnett was able to secure songs by Kenny Rogers and the Gipsy Kings and also added tracks by Captain Beefheart, Moondog and Bob Dylan's "The Man in Me".[25] However, he had a tough time securing the rights to Townes Van Zandt's cover of the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers", which plays over the film's closing credits. Former Stones manager Allen Klein owned the rights to the song and wanted $150,000 for it. Burnett convinced Klein to watch an early cut of the film and remembers, "It got to the part where the Dude says, 'I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!' Klein stands up and says, 'That's it, you can have the song!' That was beautiful."[25][27] Burnett was going to be credited on the film as "Music Supervisor", but asked his credit to be "Music Archivist" because he "hated the notion of being a supervisor; I wouldn't want anyone to think of me as management".[26] For Joel, "the original music, as with other elements of the movie, had to echo the retro sounds of the Sixties and early Seventies".[16]:156 Music defines each character. For example, "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" by Bob Nolan was chosen for the Stranger at the time the Coens wrote the screenplay, as was "Lujon" by Henry Mancini for Jackie Treehorn. "The German nihilists are accompanied by techno-pop and Jeff Bridges by Creedence. So there's a musical signature for each of them", remarked Ethan in an interview.[16]:156 The character Uli Kunkel was in the German electronic band Autobahn, an homage to the band Kraftwerk. The album cover of their record Nagelbett (bed of nails) is a parody of the Kraftwerk album cover for The Man-Machine and the group name Autobahn shares the name of a Kraftwerk song and album. In the lyrics the phrase "We believe in nothing" is repeated with electronic distortion. This is a reference to Autobahn's nihilism in the film.[28]
"Come Back Down", es una invitación a volver a casa tras estar demasiado tiempo fuera. I have met my tangenting match. I went into this interview, backstage at the legendary Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a slate of questions for Steve Poltz, about his new album Shine On, about writing “You Were Meant For Me” with Jewel, about humor in music. I probably could have gotten a good hour with Steve with two or three questions. There is no telling where his mind might flash next. Just in terms of music, the conversation covered his early days with The Rugburns, Nirvana and 90s “goat music,” the Replacements, the Dead Milkmen, Mojo Nixon, Tom Lehrer, and Allan Sherman over the course of a few minutes. We talked about spirituality, Risky Business, Hyman Roth from Godfather II, Jesus, Marianne Williamson, Styx in another five-minute section. At one point, when I told Poltz the name of the podcast, he said, “We're living up to the name.” This breakneck tangenting is something you have experienced if you've seen Poltz onstage. I hadn't seen him play since he did an in-the-round show with Beaver Nelson, “Scrappy” Jud Newcomb, and Adam Carroll perhaps seventeen or eighteen years before. I certainly hadn't remembered this version of him. When he smiles, it splits his face almost completely, and he smiles a lot when he's not singing. He also jigs, which makes him seem like a Muppet version of Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The first several minutes onstage, he told stories, picked up his guitar and put it back down again, and threatened not to pick it up the rest of the show. It'll be there, he said, the audience would see it, but maybe he wouldn't use it. He played the Grateful Dead's “Althea” off the top of his head, which surprised even him. He apologized for the bad notes, but backtracked, saying, “Think of how many bad notes the Dead hit.” The new album is called Shine On, and you can find more info about that and Poltz on www.poltz.com, and find him on Facebook and Twitter under Steve Poltz. You can also find more about Club Passim at www.passim.org. And if you're intrigued by some of the music you heard in the background, that's Boston singer/songwriter Rachel Sumner, formerly of Twisted Pine, and you can find her stuff at www.rachelsumnermusic.com. I am currently putting together this year's Daily Horror Film Fest, for which I post a different short horror film every day in October. If you are a short horror filmmaker, or even if you just have a short horror film you love dearly, e-mail your suggestions to nick@nickzaino.com. And now for something completely different. Or maybe not. This week's featured track is "Comfort" from Secret Shame of Asheville, North Carolina, from their new album, out today, September 5th, called Dark Synmthetic. This new album would have sounded great in nestled somewhere in your collection with the Pixies, The Cure, and Nirvana. It's propulsive guitar rock, mixing glassy chorus and echo with heavy, distorted riffs to create this wide-open sound. From somewhere within that sound, singer Lena is trying to reach you through waves of reverb. Seven songs come in just under twenty-six minutes total. Not a note wasted. The band is kicking off a tour this week, and you can find them on BandCamp and Facebook to find out more.

Bill Wittliff, the screenwriter and Director was the honoree that night and shared some wonderful stories about being 15 and meeting Elvis. Bill passed away yesterday at the age of 79. So I would like to honor Mr. Wittliff with this episode of tiny curations, featuring Joe Ely. Joe Ely, Austinite by way of Lubbock had long ago with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, he formed the Flatlanders which has been resurrected after many years. He befriended the Clash in their early days. Joe Strummer and the Clash loved him so much, that when they booked their first American tour, they came to Texas and toured with Joe Ely leading their way. But let's let the music speak for itself, in this first song you may recognize another one of his admirer and friends familiar voice: That was Imagine Houston, recently released from the vault, from "B4 84". This song captures his spark in the early 80's, using an Apple II! Before that was, Gallo del Cielo, or Sky Rooster, that may be the best chicken fighting song every written. Both songs from And did you hear that voice on All Just to Get to You, that was none other than The Boss, he loves Joe, too! Joe Ely still plays around Austin and goes on small tours, be sure to catch him, he's one of the good ones! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tiny-curations-deep-dives/message

My guest this week is the great Texas musician and icon of the recording world, Lloyd Maines. Best known as a pedal steel player, Maines is a multi-instrumentalist who has also performed and/or recorded playing dobro, electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, lap steel guitar, and banjo. He toured and recorded as a member of the Joe Ely Band and has also played with Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and other Texas musicians. As the father of Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, he was instrumental in bringing the current lineup of bandmates together in 1995, which jump-started their sudden popularity and change in sound. Maines won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2003 as producer of the Dixie Chicks' album, "Home". If you want to know what a life well lived in the music business sounds like, give a listen to Tony Gilkyson. Graced with both innate talent and a supportive musical family, Gilkyson has served the muse well - from his own compositions to backing up Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, K.D. Lang, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Dave Alvin and countless others. Gilkyson is perhaps best known for a facile, country-tinged style on the guitar, but he also spent a decade playing punk music in the band X, exemplifying the fact that the best musicians spend less time differentiating between musical styles and instead let their playing do the talking. Fans of The Big Lebowski, the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and All the King's Men have heard Gilkyson's guitar contributions as accompaniment on the big screen, and artists like Eleni Mandell and Chuck E. Weiss have tapped him as a producer. In conversation, Gilkyson is soft-spoken, and he measures his words like a taciturn southern father whose wisdom is parsed out in economical gems - much like his guitar playing - and when signing, his voice in an unorthodox tenor with equal parts Neil Young and wayward space cowboy. The man has been known to hang with Tom Waits, and any band would do well to study a bit of Gilkyson to learn how it's done. Or better yet, hire him and get the real thing.

Ana Egge was a born collaborator. Her parents, back-to-the-land hippies, built a community of friends based on a newspaper ad listing song lyrics and suggesting a 20th century meet-up. Her childhood in North Dakota and New Mexico was filled with experiences with the ability to make her adventurous and self-reliant. As a songwriter, she seeks out artists she admires " like Steve James, Asleep at the Wheel, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Ron Sexsmith, Steve Earle and The Stray Birds " to work together to create great music. For the past five year, Egge has been working with the Danish folk-rock trio The Sentimentals, who joined Ana at BeeHive studios in Saranac Lake, New York, to record a few songs from their album 'Say That Now,' talk about their inspirations and capture exclusive video performances.
C.B. “Stubb” Stubblefield, namesake of the legendary club in Austin, Texas, had a mission — to feed the world, especially the people who sang in it. When he started out in Lubbock, he generously fed and supported both black and white musicians, creating community and breaking barriers. From 1968 to 1975 in Lubbock, Texas, C.B. “Stubb” Stubblefield ran a dilapidated barbecue joint and roadhouse that was the late-night gathering place for a group of local musicians who were below-the-radar and rising: Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters, Johnny Cash, Tom T. Hall. Born in Navasota, Texas in 1931, Christopher B. Stubblefield was the son of a Baptist preacher and a mother who worked raising 12 children. As a young boy he picked cotton and worked in local restaurants. After a stint in Korea, where he was in charge of food preparation for thousands of soldiers, he came back to Lubbock and started a small BBQ joint. One day he picked up a hitchhiker, guitarist Jesse Taylor. And that was the start of it. Jesse asked if he could bring some friends by to play music at Stubb’s and the place became a focal point for west Texas musicians and people traveling through. A generous visionary who wanted to “feed the world,” Stubbs was not a good businessman. But his friends helped through. Ultimately, he moved to Austin, started a new restaurant, created a BBQ sauce that is still on most grocery shelves across the nation, and spread love, music and good will throughout his life.

A group of three friends who made music in a house in Lubbock, Texas, recorded an album that wasn’t released and went their separate ways into solo careers. That group became a legend and then - twenty years later - a band. The Flatlanders - Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock - are icons in American music, with songs blending country, folk, and rock that have influenced a long list of performers, including Robert Earl Keen, the Cowboy Junkies, Ryan Bingham, Terry Allen, John Hiatt, Hayes Carll, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Lyle Lovett. In The Flatlanders: Now It's Now Again, Austin author and music journalist John T. Davis traces the band’s musical journey from the house on 14th Street in Lubbock to their 2013 sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall. He explores why music was, and is, so important in Lubbock and how earlier West Texas musicians such as Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, as well as a touring Elvis Presley, inspired the young Ely, Gilmore, and Hancock. Davis vividly recreates the Lubbock countercultural scene that brought the Flatlanders together and recounts their first year (1972–1973) as a band, during which they recorded the songs that, decades later, were released as the albums More a Legend Than a Band and The Odessa Tapes. He follows the three musicians through their solo careers and into their first decade as a (re)united band, in which they cowrote songs for the first time on the albums Now Again and Hills and Valleys and recovered their extraordinary original demo tape, lost for forty years. Many roads later, the Flatlanders are finally both a legend and a band.
Spotlighting three legends of American music—Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock, The Flatlanders recounts the band’s epic forty-year journey from a living room in Lubbock, Texas, to the release of their extraordinary long-lost demo, The Odessa Tapes.
In this interview I speak with Dwight Adair, writer/director/producer at Seadra Productions. We talk about film and the color-grading experience of West Texas Muse, a film about Tommy Hancock. This documentary is 64 minutes long and was shot over a period of 10 years on SD video. There were quite a few special challenges in getting the movie finished. It was originally edited on a FCP3 system, and the movie included many old family movies and stills, all needing special color correction. Dwight did an amazing job of editing the story and building up the initial sound track. As you know, the devil is in the details with audio, so I want to give a special shout-out to Reed Hart for his dedication to reworking the soundtrack from start to finish to make it perfect. He truly has a intuitive feel for what sounsd right in a mix between words and music. The movie is being submitted to film festivals this year, but I believe there are plans to create DVDs so check back later on this if you are interested. I post and update when that occurs. Synopsis: West Texas Muse is a documentary about the Texas fiddler and songwriter Tommy Hancock, originally based in Lubbock as the house band/owner of the Cotton Club. The Cotton Club became well known as a premiere West Texas dance hall, holding as many as 1600 people, and provided an opportunity for famous musicians touring the Southwest and the West Coast to take a much-needed respite from their long bus rides. These famous performers included Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Bush, Don Walser, Merle Haggard, Hank Thompson, Ray Price, Freddy Fender, and many others. As Hancock became interested in hippies and LSD, he began a spiritual quest that not only changed his life and music, but influenced many well-known Texas musicians, some now based in Austin, such as Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Lloyd Maines, Jesse Taylor, and many others. It also changed the Cotton Club from being a dance hall for country music into something that more closely resembled the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, where cowboys, hippies, bikers, and persons of all descriptions learned to get along and enjoy various types of music. Hancock formed the Supernatural Family Band, and later, when he could no longer perform due to arthritis, he supported the Texana Dames with his songwriting and dancing. Musician, bandleader, songwriter, author, and father, Tommy Hancock now lives in Austin and is the subject of this 64-minute exploratory documentary about a wise, spiritual man who has much to say about life.

THE FLATLANDERS are Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. That their first go-round as The Flatlanders in 1972 was completely rejected by the country music establishment is surprising in retrospect but, ultimately, poetic. That each went on to have formidable solo careers is a testament to their talent and determination. Add to this their diverse yet complimentary styles -Joe the street-wise rocker, Jimmie Dale the mystic with the classic country voice and Butch the cerebral folk singer - and youve got a story of one of the most extraordinary kinships in American musical history. It took these Flatlanders a mere three decades to release the sequel to their legendary debut. Their latest CD on New West Records is titled Hills & Vallies.,
