“It's better than going out and doing a 10K tempo on Pre's Trail and coming away with nothing. There's no money for a tempo run. I'll go do it in a track stadium with a bunch of fast guys, taper a little bit, come away with a couple grand or something… I'm like, ‘It can go bad 400 in and I can just step off, I get front row seats to a 10K final and I'm already on the Olympic team.'” Conner Mantz, 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials winner, updates us on how training is going for the Paris Olympics. “That's what I was telling myself the whole time. I was just so committed to racing as hard as I can, and I was just like, ‘I think I can compete with those guys.' I had that mindset the whole race. I was like, ‘I don't care if I get fourth, I don't even care if I get second or third and don't get to go.' It was about conquering the disbelief that I've had the last few years that I could compete with those guys. So that was the plan.” Drew Hunter, 4th place finisher in the U.S. Olympic Trials 10,000m final, reflects on his performance last night, shares about the support he's received since racing, what he's learned since becoming a dad, and gives a few updates on Tinman Elite. "I was never in it for the money or the fame. But if you really think about it, I had more gold medals than Allyson Felix individually. I have more medals – if I'm not mistaken – than Usain Bolt individually. Yeah, it sucks but it all goes back to how the track takes over the field. It's just unfortunate but again, I feel like I was put on this earth to inspire and not to be that person. That's just not who I was put on this earth to be. I never really dwelled on it. Do I feel like I was underappreciated? Yeah, of course. It's track and field. I'm definitely underappreciated if we're talking real talk. I'm not on that type of time or type of level. I just never really cared about things like that. But, I am the MJ of long jump though. I feel like I am that." My guest for this episode is one of the greatest track and field athletes of all-time. She doesn't get the credit she deserves. It's the one and only Brittney Reese aka B Reese aka Da Beast. She is the Michael Jordan of the long jump. She was the 2012 Olympic champion and the Olympic silver medalist in 2016 and 2021. She won four world outdoor titles (2009, 2011, 2013 and 2017). She won three world indoor titles (2010, 2012 and 2016). She is a 13x U.S. champion. She was a two-time NCAA champion at the University of Mississippi. With all of those accomplishments, you'd think her face would be plastered on billboards or commercials in the leadup to the world championships or Olympics but it rarely was. After her silver at last year's Tokyo Olympics, she decided to retire…or so we think. As you'll hear in this episode, the door might be open for a possible comeback. My cohost, Jasmine Todd, and I touch on what can be done better to market and showcase the jumps + what's next for Da Beast as a coach and mother. In this episode, I talk with 4x Olympian and multiple time World and Olympic medallist Brittany Reese. We touch on her recent experience in Tokyo at the 2020 Olympic Games, and how she embraces different cuisines and foreign food cultures when frequently competing abroad. Brittney speaks about the diverse athletic background she developed, pursuing team sports before finally specializing in track and field after playing collegiate basketball! From being encouraged by her mother to pursue collegiate track and field, to having her college coach persuade her to turn pro early, Brittney shares the importance of having people that believe in you and the power of role models. Disappointment at the 2008 Olympics was the catalyst for Brittney exploring the role nutrition has to play in performance, seeking professional help from the on-campus sports dietitian. Brittney attributes her nutrition changes and gained muscle mass to huge leaps in performance, allowing her to maximize her potential. Brittney speaks about the normal fluctuations in her body composition and weight throughout the year, and how she prioritizes maintaining her muscle mass and micronutrient levels over a focus on “lighter equals faster”. Brittney's success and longevity in track and field is testament to optimal and relaxed approaches to nutrition and recovery, and to her emphasis on fueling for performance and strength over leanness and looks. Off the track, Brittney teases us with her passions for apparel design, coaching and giving back to younger generations. Looking to the future, Brittney talks transitions away from elite athletics to spending more quality time with her son. Follow her on instagram and Twitter @daljbeast and find the Brittney Reese Fan Club: mykeychain.co/DaLJBeast Brittney's Official Bio: Brittney Reese was born in Inglewood, California and raised in Gulfport Mississippi. She graduated from Gulfport High School as a state champion in both the long jump & triple jump. After high school she attended Mississippi Golf Coast Community College where she would play basketball and go on to earn Junior College All-American honors in the sport. Following her time there, Brittney took her talents to the University of Mississippi where she would truly find her calling in Track & Field and earn her degree in Entrepreneurship. After Ole Miss Brittney goes on to become one of the winning athletes in US track & field history. She is an Olympic gold & silver medalist, and seven-time world champion, the indoor American record holder & she is 3rd all-time on the American outdoor list. In this episode of Keep Moving Forward, I interview 3x USA track and field Olympian, Olympic gold and silver medalist, and 6x world champion in the long jump, Brittney Reese.   If you guys are inspired by the stories that my interviewees and I share with you each week, please consider becoming a patron of my podcast at https://www.patreon.com/keepmovingforward. Of course, all episodes will still be free both on iTunes and at http://keepmovingforward.us/, however, if you would like to ensure my future success, your support would be much appreciated.   “Trust the process and have faith.” It is easy to get sidetracked from your goals when things get tough. When your journey is plagued with hardship, strife, and struggle. So where does the strength come from to continue on and to, you guessed it, keep moving forward? Brittney Reese knows that this resilience comes from within. Her mental toughness is far more important than this Olympic long jumpers’ physical endurance. As a professional athlete, of course Brittney must constantly be in her best shape, however, the state of her physical being does not end with the power she exhibits when she jumps. The real fortitude she exhibits comes from within the confines of her own mind.   3 Olympic Games, one gold medal, one silver medal, and 6 World Championship titles as a long jumper for Team USA prove that Brittney certainly knows the importance of mental strength. For her resolve is how she made it through years of grueling training, competitions, sacrifices, and injury. She knows full well that a person must trust the process and have faith in the path that she is on, for success is imminent, so long as she works hard enough.   It truly was an honor to speak to this USA Track and Field legend, and I can’t thank her enough for the opportunity. I hope that you all enjoy my interview with a woman who truly refuses to give up, Brittney Reese.   If you would like to learn more about Brittney, you can visit http://www.worldexpressmgmt.com/breese.html and follow her on Facebook @BrittneyReese, and on Instagram @DALJBeast.
