"You're going to have stuff go wrong regardless. This year I had a lot of stuff go wrong, but it's not necessarily about not having anything go wrong. It's about how you respond to those issues that will inherently come up.” Today's guest is Ryan Crouser. Ryan just won his third straight Olympic gold medal in the men's shot put in Paris, becoming the first shot putter in history to win three Olympic titles. He did so with a mark of 22.90m, which is the second best in Olympic history, behind only his performance from Tokyo in 2021. The season wasn't easy for Ryan after winning World Indoors in Glasgow in March, he battled through pectoral and elbow injuries throughout most of the spring and the early summer that forced him to open his season at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Despite this adversity, he still came out on top when it mattered most, and now he's chasing something big in the last few Diamond League meets of the year. In this episode, he talks through the recovery process after picking up an elbow injury at the World Indoor Championships in March and then tearing his pectoral muscle about a month later. Ryan wasn't able to open his season until the U.S. Trials, but he picked up the win there to secure his spot in Paris. The Olympic final was never in doubt, as his first throw was good enough to win the competition by almost half-a-meter, and rain in the final three rounds stymied a comeback attempt from his rivals. His third straight Olympic gold makes him only the fourth thrower to ever win three Olympic titles. With the highest-pressure competition of the year out of the way, Ryan is ready to produce something massive, closing out his season with six meets in the span of three weeks. This week, Chris Chavez, Paul Hof-Mahoney and Preet Majithia recap the Rome Diamond League and the Track Lab event in Switzerland. Rome Diamond League – The women's steeplechase saw Winfred Yavi come heartbreakingly close to a world record, missing by just .07 seconds. – Faith Kipyegon extended her unbeaten streak in the women's 1500. – In the men's 5000m, Hagos Gebrhiwet outkicked a loaded field to win after the world record attempt fizzled out. – Letsile Tebogo dazzled in the men's 100, celebrating early and still securing a win in 9.87 seconds. – Ryan Crouser continued his dominance in the shot put, recording six throws over 22 meters, including a meet-record 22.49m. Track Lab This unique event introduced new and modified disciplines, including a completely new mile steeplechase and adjusted sprint formats with zero-tolerance reaction times. The field events saw significant changes with the pole vault measuring being changed, the long jump featuring an extended take-off zone and the javelin throw only measured if it improved on previous attempts. A rainy Monday morning to start the week. Thankfully, it's going to be MUCH cooler this week with highs in the upper 70's expected almost every day this week. We recapped a lot of Olympic stuff from the last few days, including an updated medal count, Simone Biles & Katie Ledecky dominating and winning even more gold, Noah Lyles becoming the fastest man on the planet, and Brian's favorite - Ryan Crouser - getting that gold in the shot put. Plus, the French pole-vault guy's dong and the dirty ass water in the Seine making athletes sick. Did you see the kid at the Packer family night event over the weekend who caught THREE consecutive kick-offs??? Get him a contract ASAFP! Speaking of kids, there was a 14 month-old toddler that recently fell into a well but was extracted thanks to some quick-thinking firefighters & EMS workers. There's apparently a new "Alphabet Song" and to be honest, it sucks. This week's "Monday Morning Throwback" was from 2011 and included an appearance by Skradie in the marsh. Emotional moment over the weekend at the HOF induction for Steve "Mongo" McMichael & his family. A lot of Olympians are finding new & interesting ways to make a few extra bucks, just like Kendall Ellis who teamed up with Charmin after a porta-potty mishap. During today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a new A.I. "friend" that people can buy, a fugitive from Wisconsin was just caught in Iowa after being on the run since the 90's, a Frontier Airlines pilot who was arrested just before he was scheduled to take off, polite burglars in California, a #FloridaWoman who plugged a conduit pipe in her yard with some concrete, a man who found a nose ring in his Taco Bell, and a guy who stuck a live eel up his ass that began eating it's way through his abdomen. Jenny Simpson Interview

Running--State of the Sport

This week, George Hirsch and Amby Burfoot talk with Jenny Simpson, miler turned marathoner--well, almost, as Simpson hasn't finished a marathon yet. But she'll be toeing the start line in Hopkinton on April 15, and she sounds absolutely determined to make it to the Copley-Square finish line.  Simpson explains in this conversation that she never intended for the Olympic Marathon Trials in February to be her first marathon start, but life had other ideas, so that's how things developed. She dropped out of the Trials at about 18 miles, and now thinks she overtrained and overstressed about the 26.2-mile distance. For a decade, Simpson had been the best USA 1500 meter/miler. She excelled at the global level, winning an Olympic bronze along with a gold and two silvers at the World Championships. She also won the Fifth Ave Mile 8 times. Even during her track career, Simpson explains, she did a long run almost every weekend. She also attended many marathons with her husband, Jason, a 2:18 runner, and found herself inspired by the tens of thousands of amateur runners who challenged themselves with the marathon distance.  Before speaking with Jenny, George and Amby discussed the biggest recent running news. Amby got a chuckle over his Google News aggregator, which brought him an April Fool's Day story from LetsRun.com. It claimed that Taylor Switft was now dating shot put great, Ryan Crouser, all 6' '7" and 320 pound of him. Take that Travis Kelce! But Amby turned serious when noting that the BAA/Boston Marathon was putting out press releases listing "5 Reasons for a Clear Course" while a Black running club rejoindered with "5 Reasons for a Cheer Course." Last year there was tension at the Marathon's 21st mile when club members allegedly ran onto the course. George was impressed by the always strong performances at the World Cross-Country Championships. This year in Serbia, the Kenyan senior women swept the top 5 places--an unprecedented team achievement. Individual champions Beatrice Chebet (Kenya) and Jacob Kiplimo (Uganda) repeated their victories of 2 years ago. The next World Cross meet will be held in January, 2026, in Tallahassee, FL. Reviewing their conversation with Simpson, Amby said that he appreciated her conviction that a woman athlete could be both a fierce competitor and a good sport at the same time. George liked her fearlessness in stepping up from the mile to the marathon. You can keep up with Jenny Simpson by following her on Instagram. How has watching MMA and UFC fighters made him a better thrower? Where in Eugene might you find Ryan serving you your pizza? On today's episode of the Polaroid Podcast, we have Professional U.S. Shotputter T'mond Johnson! T'mond is fresh off an impressive 10th place finish at the Olympic Trials in a stacked field. Johnson grew up in a military family, frequently moving before the age of 4. He finally settled in Killeen, Tx where he has lived since. Johnson grew up playing a variety of sports and had an early love for basketball. He admits that though he soon stopped growing vertically, he was consistently getting stronger. Johnson seriously picked up the shotput during his Senior year of high school, having previously focused on football( and even garnering D2 offers and interest). In just a short time working on the rotational movement, he had gotten out to 54' and knew that he wanted to compete at the collegiate level. He took his talents to nearby Texas State, where he would embark on a legendary career. During his tenure, the coaching staff was constantly changing, which proved difficult at times but did not prevent the work. During his Sophomore season, Johnson eclipsed the 19 meter barrier and qualified for the national collegiate championships. Through just two years, his potential was undeniable in the sport. Johnson would get out past 19 meters the following season, winning the Sun Belt conference yet again. He would culminate his collegiate career as a 6 time conference champion and 2 time All-American. In the midst of his action-packed Sophomore season, he reached out to legendary throws and powerlifting coach Dane Miller of Garage Strength throws. Johnson sent him throws and began to build the rapport that has made their relationship today possible. He now trains full-time with Miller and Garage Strength, alongside the likes of olympians, fellow hopefuls and many more impressive athletes. It has been just over a year since he has begun his post-collegiate career, and most recently Johnson landed 10th at the Olympic Trials. He details the excitement of going to such a competition and watching Ryan Crouser break the World Record in the sport. Be on the lookout for Johnson for years to come!!Recorded 7.10.21

Intro: (Cue intro music) Hey everyone, welcome back to What a week!, I'm your host, Olivia Lee, here to deliver your weekly dose of the news. Let's get started! In Local News: https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/27/us/northwest-heatwave-record-high-temperatures/index.htmlhttps://www.oregonlive.com/weather/2021/06/portland-expected-to-hit-114-degrees-monday-in-3rd-consecutive-record-setting-day-of-oregon-heat-wave.htmlIt is one scorching hot week for Portland residents. The Pacific Northwest is currently experiencing a record-breaking heat wave, with an all-time high of 112 degrees Fahrenheit reported as of this past Sunday in Portland, Oregon. The National Weather Service in Portland predicts that on Monday, it will hit 114 degrees in the afternoon, breaking this past Sunday's record-setting 112 degrees. Sunday's high had broken the 108 degree record set Saturday, which broke the previous high of 107, first set in 1965. Along the West Coast, more than 20 million people are under a heat warning or advisory, from the Canadian border to the Mexican border.https://www.oregonlive.com/commuting/2021/06/trimet-suspends-max-wes-lines-until-tuesday-citing-heat-related-mechanical-issues.htmlThe TriMet this past Sunday shut down all MAX lines until Tuesday after record-high temperatures began disrupting the light rail service.  Portland's record setting temperatures strained the power grid and overhead wires delivering electricity to the MAX, a system built to run in conditions as high as 110 degrees. TriMet said mechanical issues caused by the heat wave disrupted MAX Blue, Green, Red and Yellow lines earlier Sunday, and high temperatures forecasted through Tuesday morning would put MAX trains at risk of more disruptions. In-state news:https://www.kgw.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/gov-brown-announces-oregon-will-reopen-by-june-30/283-34eb091e-2475-4ad4-895e-a6d8b48e1fcfLast Friday, Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced that the state will reopen by no later than Wednesday, June 30th. Brown's new executive order will lift all state COVID-19 health and safety restrictions -- including the statewide mask mandate, physical distancing requirements and capacity limits -- when Oregon reaches a 70% first-dose vaccination rate for adults, or by June 30th, whichever comes sooner. Under the new recovery order, masks will no longer be required statewide but they will still be required in some places under federal guidance, including airports, public transportation and health care settings. In National News:https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/25/us/derek-chauvin-sentencing-george-floyd/index.htmlDerek Chauvin, the former police officer who killed George Floyd on a Minneapolis street last year, was sentenced last Friday to 22 and half years in prison. Under Minnesota law, Chauvin will have to serve two-thirds of his sentence, or 15 years -- and he will be eligible for supervised release for the remaining seven and a half years. The sentence exceeds the Minnesota sentencing guideline range of 10 years and eight months to 15 years for the crime. Floyd's death last year has since sparked massive protests across the nation over police brutality. Chauvin, 45, was convicted in April on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for his role in Floyd's death. In International News: https://news.yahoo.com/outbreaks-emerge-across-australia-phase-010359598.htmlhttps://www.cnn.com/2021/06/27/australia/sydney-lockdown-australia-covid-pandemic-intl-cmd/index.htmlhttps://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/sydney-australia-s-largest-city-enters-hard-two-week-covid-n1272444Last week, Sydney, Australia's largest city entered a hard two-week Covid-19 lockdown along with some other surrounding areas.. as authorities are struggling to control a fast-spreading outbreak of the highly infectious Delta variant that has grown to 80 cases. More than 1 million people in downtown Sydney and eastern suburbs of Australia's biggest city were already under lockdown due to the outbreak, but health authorities said they needed to expand the curbs after more infections were recorded, with exposure sites increasing beyond the initial areas of concern. New Zealand has since suspended the travel bubble between the two countries. Australia has been more successful in managing the pandemic compared to many other advanced economies. Through the application of swift border closures, social distancing rules and high compliance, Australia reports just over 30,400 cases and 910 Covid-19 deaths, but the country has struggled with its vaccination rollout, and states have been plagued in recent months by small outbreaks. These outbreaks have been contained through speedy contact tracing, isolation of thousands of people at a time or snap hard lockdowns. Lastly here is the wildcard news for the week:Despite the historic heatwave that wiped through the Pacific Northwest last weekend, there were a number of records set at the track and field Olympic trials held in Eugene, Oregon. Ryan Crouser, a 28-year-old from Oregon, heaved a 16-pound iron ball farther than any other man in history . The shot splashed into the dirt 23.37 meters away, making it the new shot put world record by a quarter of a meter. Sydney Mclaughlin, set a new world record for the fastest time by a woman on the 400m hurdles by crossing the finish line at 51.9 seconds. Closing:  Well that wraps up What a Week! Stay safe and see you guys next week.
