What a weekend! Nathan Green and UW turned heads at Penn but what about Ethan Strand and Gary Martin? Sabastian Sawe won London and staked his claim to #1 marathoner in the world although John Korir may want to argue. Former #1 Eliud Kipchoge put up a fine performance. Sifan Hassan's 4 month lay-off was too much as Tigist Assefa set a women's only world record and took home over $300,000. The Diamond League opened and Beatrice Chebet was better than ever, while Karsten Warholm got a 300m world record. What's up with Grant Holloway? And what about Faith Kipyegon's sub 4 attempt? We actually recorded this while we were in Paris but had to keep it under wraps for a bit. This was just a few days after Alison Dos Santos earned his second Olympic bronze medal in the men's 400m hurdles. He went on to win the 2024 Diamond League title and finished the year with a personal best of 46.29, which puts him at No. 3 on the all-time list behind Karsten Warholm and Rai Benjamin. We talk a bit about the state of the men's 400m hurdles. His experience in Paris and his excitement around becoming the first South American athlete to sign with Grand Slam Track. He will be contesting the 400m and 400m hurdles four times per year at the four Slams in 2025 for the inaugural season of Michael Johnson's professional track league.

Karsten Warholm is tearing it up and sending a message to all his opponents with the way hes training. Are we primed for an epic rivalry between Femke Bol and Sydney McLaughlin, plus NIL in our sport, and Justin's Olympic story.
Pride precedes and often leads to humiliation—something a man in Norway found out. Not even dressed in running clothes, the individual arrogantly challenged Karsten Warholm—the world record holder in the 400-meter hurdles—to a race. Warholm, training in an indoor public facility, obliged the challenger and left him in his dust. At the finish line, the two-time world champion smiled when the man insisted that he’d had a bad start and wanted to race again! In Proverbs 29:23 we read, “Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor.” God’s dealings with the proud is one of Solomon’s favorite themes in the book (11:2; 16:18; 18:12). The word pride in these verses means “swelling” or “puffed up”—taking credit for what rightfully belongs to God. When we’re filled with pride, we think more highly of ourselves than we should. Jesus once said, “Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12). Both He and Solomon point us to pursue humility and lowliness. This isn’t false modesty, but right-sizing oneself and acknowledging that all that we have comes from God. It’s being wise and not saying things arrogantly “in haste” (Proverbs 29:18, 20). Let’s ask God to give us the heart and wisdom to humble ourselves to honor Him and avoid humiliation.

Chris Chavez and Katelyn Hutchison hosted the first-ever Pre Pre Show, the official pregame show of the 2023 Prefontaine Classic in partnership with TrackTown USA. Guests include: • Karsten Warholm, 2021 Olympic Champion, 2023 World Champion and world record holder in the 400m hurdles (Bonus appearance by coach Lief Olav Alnes) • Noah Lyles, 2019, 2022 and 2023 World Champion in the 200m, 2023 World Champion in the 100m, American record holder in the 200m • Nina Kennedy, 2023 World Champion in the pole vault • Yared Nuguse, 2023 U.S. 1500m finalist, U.S. indoor and outdoor mile record holder • Cole Hocker, 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials champion, 2021 Olympic and 2023 World Championship finalist in the 1500m • Katie Moon, 2021 Olympic champion, 2022 and 2023 World Champion in the pole vault • Sebastian Coe, World Athletics president SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS
Day 5 from the World Athletics Championships threw up some intriguing storylines. An upset in the men's 1500m, as history repeated in the GB (actually Edinburgh Athletic Club) vs Ingebrigtsen rivalry, Karsten Warholm returned to the top step of the 400m hurdles podium, and there was an agreed tie for gold in the Women's Pole vault. We discuss the physiological fragility of the 1500m event, ponder fatigue and pacing strategies in the field events, compare Lyles 2023 to Bolt 2009, and Mike gives us insights on Hungarian goulash! On this week's show, we had some fast times thrown down in Lievin, France where we saw several world-leading performances and a world record. We're going to spend much of our time previewing the USATF Indoor Championships and the World Cross Country Championships this weekend. Lievin World Indoor Tour: Lamecha Girma broke the indoor 3000m record with a 7:23.81; Meet records fell at the hands of Karsten Warholm, Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Bol. Jakob Ingebrigtsen is paying attention to the American stars now but says, 'I'm still the best.' USATF Indoor Championships: Many of the top stars are absent from this meet since there is no World Indoor Championships this year. Noah Lyles is still the premier star showing up for the men's 60m. Major props to the likes of Aleia Hobbs, Anna Hall, Whittni Morgan, Cole Hocker, Clayton Murphy, Bryce Hoppel and others for contesting the meet. World Cross Country Championships: The race will be held in Mount Panorama Circuit in Australia. If you want to watch, tune in on Friday, Feb. 17, at 11:30 p.m. ET on Peacock. It's a 2K loop. People will be running through a vineyard at times. Possibly some kangaroo sightings. Very hot conditions. Should be spicy with Joshua Cheptegei, Selemon Barega, Letesenbet Gidey and Francine Niyonsaba among the stars competing. + our Buy or Sell segment... Today's episode features Jared Burton. Jared is a human performance specialist, chiropractic student, and health coach. He got his coaching start working with Brady Volmering of DAC baseball, and has spent recent years coaching, consulting and running educational courses in the private sector. Jared focuses on engaging all aspects of an athlete's being, providing the knowledge for the individual to thrive in their domain. In the world of coaching and human performance, the road to success is often thought of on the level of do “A”, in “B” amount, so you can accomplish “C”. The focus on typically on numbers, exercises, and (often) a linear cueing process for those said movements. We are so quick to judge programs entirely based on numbers and exercises. What we don't consider often enough is the complex factors surrounding the volume that is administered. There are elite athletes who have won gold medals and set world records who do a lot of volume that would “crush” other athletes (think the athletes that survived the Soviet or Bulgarian training systems, or modern-day athletes, such as Karsten Warholm, the 400m hurdle world record holder). We need to ask ourselves, “what is the difference, or elements, that allowed the athlete to tolerate that?”. Is it that their musculo-skeletal system was somehow just “better” than the other trainees, or are there other additional elements to consider? The more elite coaches I've had the opportunity to work with, the more I realize that good coaches intuitively key into the mental and emotional state of the athlete, as well as the physiological management. On today's podcast, Jared chats on managing high training volumes, work capacity dynamics, the critical role of boredom/interest in training, athlete self-discovery, and much more. This is a podcast that causes you to ask questions, and gives us a new and interesting perspective on the dynamics of training. Timestamps and Main Points: 4:10 – The nature of Jared's training experiment, where he only performed extreme iso holds and dunking (in lieu of in his quest for a higher vertical jump 9:45 – Thoughts on the process of assessing athletes, and drawing out physical and emotional weak-points 12:15 – How “obsessive” or “unreasonable” training, such as bounding every day, could actually be a powerful performance tool, and how we actually classify fatigue in training 28:45 – How to manage higher volume training so athletes don't get injured or decrease their performance 42:30 – The role of self-discovery and creativity in athletic performance training 45:36 – Thoughts on mixing game like activities with specific training outputs (such as a 10m fly or dunking a basketball) 57:28 – Mental associations, boredom/interest, and training principles 1:05:55 – Jared's thoughts on the “Easy Strength” mentality on weights and barbell training “As I was holding the isometrics, I was creating the reality of: “what would it feel like as I dunk”” “How do you meet an athlete where you are at in their current state; how do you expose them, and how do you draw out they creativity within them” “The more awareness they have, the more ability they have to create. The goal is for them to be the captain of their own ship” “The amount of volume that kids or athletes experience in a game is 5 to 10 times the amount of actual stimulus that we even give them in the training aspect; I follow along with the idea that the training must be more intense and strenuous than the actual activity itself” “The biggest thing, regardless of how you train,

This is the 11th edition of Track Snacks – a mini-series taking you into the weekend where Chris Chavez and a CITIUS MAG staffer or friend share the story of an athlete who they're excited about right now that you can expect to see compete at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 (July 15–24, 2022). For this episode, we're joined by Katelyn Hutchison to discuss the dominance of Karsten Warholm. He is the two-time World 400m hurdles champion and Olympic champion from Norway. 2021 was the best season of his career as he twice broke the world record of 46.78 held by USA's Kevin Young since 1992. Warholm ran 46.70 to break it on July 1 and then ran one of the best races in history with a 45.94 in the final at the Tokyo Games. We discuss his road to greatness and how it all started with the multi-events at a young age in Norway. Track Snacks is presented by Hayward Magic. "We want to prepare for the World Championships, run fast before the World Championships to get confidence and then try to win the World Championships." Happy Friday! This is the eighth edition of Track Snacks – a mini-series taking you into the weekend where Chris Chavez and a CITIUS MAG staffer or friend share the story of an athlete who they're excited about right now that you can expect to see compete at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 (July 15–24, 2022). For this episode, we're joined by Brazilian hurdle star Alison Dos Santos after he won the Prefontaine Classic men's 400m hurdle race in a world-leading time of 47.23. Last summer, he was part of one of the greatest races in track and field history – the Olympic 400m hurdle final. Norway's Karsten Warholm made history by becoming the first person to break 46 seconds with his victory (45.95). Rai Benjamin went 46.17 for the second-fastest time in history and the silver medal. Dos Santos rounded out the podium with a 46.72 for the bronze medal. We chatted more with him about how he got his start in track and field because he was competing on big stages as a teenager including winning a bronze medal at the 2018 World U20 Championships. He's earned gold medals at the South American Championships and the PanAmerican Games. His first senior global championship came in 2019 when he finished 7th at the World Championships in Doha – just a quarter of a second away from the bronze medal. I watched Dos Santos during the practice session at Hayward Field. He's six feet, seven inches tall and puts down tremendous force into the ground. While he's fierce and focused on the track, if you catch him anywhere off-the-track, he's always willing to stop and chat, crack some jokes, tell stories and even share a dance.
