Today on the podcast, I'm excited to share my conversation with American record holder Weini Kelati. She recently ran 66:09, breaking her own American record in the half marathon at the Houston Half Marathon, where she placed second. Weini is an absolute force in distance running, and I can't wait to see what she does ... more »
“They said the race is going to start at 16K – I have to stay patient for that to finish the race strong. That was true. I felt at 16K, ‘Okay, now I am racing.' This year, just knowing how it feels, was very helpful. I trusted my training and how well I've been doing in workouts. It was like, ‘Let's go out there and finish this race.'” My guest for today's episode is Weini Kelati, who's becoming synonymous with record breaking performances on the roads. Just last weekend at the 2025 Houston Half Marathon, Weini shattered her own American record, running 1:06:09 to take 16 seconds off the mark she set at the same race last year, battling cold temperatures, gusting winds, and a loaded international field. She delivered a gutsy performance, finishing second overall behind Ethiopia's Senayet Getachew. In this episode, we dive into Weini's journey over the past few months from setting personal bests on the track to her debut at the Paris Olympics. We hear about her mindset going into Houston, the tough moments she overcame during the race, and why she's curious about pushing herself to even faster times. Plus, we discuss how this record fits into her broader goals for 2025 and beyond. Yes, we also talk about her potential in the marathon. Weini continues to cement herself as one of the best distance runners in the country. Chris Chavez and Mac Fleet recap the 2025 Houston Half Marathon, where Conner Mantz shattered Ryan Hall's 18-year-old American record with a stunning 59:17 in a thrilling sprint finish and Weini Kelati broke her own American record for the second consecutive year. Facing freezing conditions, headwinds, and a late quad injury in training leading up to the race, Mantz delivered one of the most historic performances in U.S. distance running. Overall, the American depth was on display with seven men breaking 61:00 and Amanda Vestri moving to No. 8 on the all-time U.S. list with her 67:35. Plus, they break down Joe Klecker's debut and what some of these performances mean for the track and spring marathons ahead. “We're kind of on this journey to the marathon. The next logical step is a half marathon. That will be in the new year. We don't know exactly where yet but we want to go attack a half marathon. That's what all the training is focused on and that's why it's been so fun. Not that the training is easy but it's the training that comes the most naturally to me.” My guest for today's episode is U.S. Olympian Joe Klecker of the On Athletics Club. He joins us with some news that he's gearing up for his half marathon debut in early 2025 after a challenging comeback from injury. Joe is back and looking to tackle a new distance with a keen eye on Ryan Hall's American record in the half marathon. While his 2024 outdoor season was sidelined by a torn abductor, he's now fully focused on the 13.1 mile distance. He doesn't say it, but I think all signs point that it will likely be at the Houston Half Marathon in January, which is traditionally perfect weather and very fast. And while he's not quite ready to step away from the track just yet, Joe is already embracing the marathon mindset and this is one step forward to getting to the full distance with a personal best of 12:54 for 5K and 27:07 for 10K. Joe's incredible speed and dedication are setting him up for a strong entry into the longer distance. So in this episode, we'll hear about his approach to injury recovery, his plans for that debut, all with the guidance of his coach Dathan Ritzenhein and the support of his training partner and Olympic medalist, Hellen Obiri. He also shares why he's hoping for one more team on the track. Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share another episode with this guest and the exciting journey he is about to embark on this summer. Paris would be Summer Games debut for 27-year-old Calgary-born runner. Rory Linkletter is only the 2nd Canadian to hit the Olympic qualifying standard in the men's marathon for Paris this summer. The 27-year-old set a personal-best time of two hours eight minutes one second at the Sevilla Marathon in Spain. Rory ran nine seconds under the 2:08:10 standard and posted the third-fastest finish all-time among Canadian men behind Cam Levins (2:05.36 and 2:07.09). Rory Linkletter moved from Canada to the United States at age six and became a U.S. citizen in 2020. He holds dual citizenship. Coached by American marathon record holder Ryan Hall, he starred for five years at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where Rory earned six All-American citations. Rory is a distance runner who first represented Canada internationally at the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in the U20 division. He subsequently went on to compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in both 2017 and 2019. He finished second in 10,000m at the 2017 NCAA Championships. During his college running career, he earned six All-American citations while competing for Brigham Young University, where he majored in political science and minored in communications. Rory set a new Canadian record at the Houston Half-Marathon in January 2022. Rory lowered Jeff Schiebler's 23-year-old Canadian half-marathon record of 61:28, crossing the finish line in 61:08 for eighth place. However, before he laces up his everyday to train for his upcoming Olympic debut, Rory is a family man with a very supportive wife and two amazing kids. In our conversation, Rory not only shares his journey to get to the Olympic stage, but also how much he loves being a dad. If you would like to learn more about Rory Linkletter, please see the links below in the show notes. Also, don't forget to watch Rory compete in the marathon at the Paris Olympics. Dad Up! She became the first U.S. woman to run under 67 minutes in the half marathon on a record-eligible course, and Emily now owns four out of six of the fastest half marathon times run by an American woman. (She is also the American record holder in the marathon!) In this conversation, Emily talks about the mental side of staying so strong during training and on race day. She shares how she avoids the comparison trap, and how she stays focused on what she can do vs. what her competition is capable of. Plus, what it was like racing alongside longtime training partner Molly Huddle, the secret to that finishing kick, and what the finish line media frenzy is really like. SPONSOR: New Balance. “It's hard to not compare yourself but so much has changed. It's not to say that you can't get back there – trying to take a different route may get you somewhere better. I'm focusing a lot more on the marathon going forward too. Before, I had bounced back and forth from the track to the road. I think that will maybe help us maybe maximize myself there. That's probably the one event I probably have a PR left in. Reinventing myself a little bit by focusing on that.” This is Molly Huddle's is her first time back on the CITIUS MAG Podcast since being guest No. 6 way back in March 2017. She recently made her postpartum return to high-level competitive racing and just finished an impressive fifth place at the Houston Half Marathon in 1:10:01 – almost nine months after welcoming her daughter. She secured her mark for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Join us as we talk about her journey back to the starting line and what it takes to balance motherhood and elite running. Then he tried track and cross country and he has taken the more circuitous route to the top ranks of the sport. He won a a DII NCAA title for Cedarville. He nearly won a DI for Indiana but fell over the final barrier. Unsponsored, during COVID at one point he was working at Walmart to help support his wife Abby. When she got pregnant, he wanted to find a job with insurance, and that led him to coaching in Texas, training solo, a new coach of his own and a return to the top of the sport. He was the most gracious 4th placer we've ever seen at the 2020 Olympic Trials, and now has his eyes set on the 2024 Paris Olympics. "Picture yourself as the eye of the hurricane, the eye of the storm. You have all this going on around you, but it doesn't affect you." It was a big year for Emily Sisson! The professional runner for New Balance broke not one but two records! In May, Emily became the American record holder in the half marathon, running 1:07:11 at the USATF Half Marathon Championships in Indianapolis. Then, in October, she finished the Chicago Marathon in 2:18:29, effectively becoming the American record holder in the 26.2-mile distance. Now, Emily has her eyes on 2023. She'll race the Houston Half Marathon in January, she's committed to a spring marathon (can't say which one yet!), and she's hoping to run a fall marathon to complete the year. Today, in the span of 26 questions, Emily talks about how life has (or hasn't) changed this year, shares what she's excited about and intrigued by, and talks about her favorite and hardest races to date. “I'm in this whole new world of what they call marathon training. I don't know. I'm still in denial!” Emily Durgin is having one heck of a year on the run. The adidas-sponsored professional runner lives and trains in Flagstaff, AZ (though, she says, "Maine will always be home home"), and 2022 has been good to her. She kicked off the year at the Houston Half Marathon, where she ran a personal best (67:54), and became the sixth-fastest American woman ever in the half marathon. And then, the personal bests just kept coming: Emily ran PBs in the 10,000 meters, the 5K, the 10K, and the 15K. But in some ways, she's just getting started. Emily is moving up in distance! She's gearing up for her 26.2-mile debut at the TCS New York City Marathon in November! In this conversation, Emily talks about why she wanted to make her marathon debut this year, why she wanted to do it in New York, and what her training looks like. In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast I talk with professional runner for Adidas Emily Durgin. We jump right in to discussing her incredible run at the Houston Half Marathon, a performance that places her as the sixth fastest American female of all-time! Emily announces her plans to run her first marathon in the fall of 2022, and talks about how she'll need to approach fueling differently to maximize her performance over 26.2 miles. Emily shares her current pre-race nutrition strategy racing distances from the 5km to half marathon: fueling well the days before and a good race day breakfast, topped off with an energy gel before the start. We highlight how fuelling looks different for elite and amateur runners depending on race duration and intensity. Emily and I bond over the difficulties of college chemistry classes required to become a dietitian as we talk about choosing a major in college. As a top high school athlete, Emily shares her recruiting journey and how she ultimately ended up at UCONN, running for 5 years on an NCAA Division 1 team. We discuss the challenges of transitioning to college combined with navigating puberty and body changes. Emily opens up about her struggles and setbacks towards the end of high school and beginning of college, gaining necessary weight as she developed into a woman. Despite early successes in high school, Emily talks about the plateau she hit and how, with the support of coaches, she stayed patient and committed as her body changed, riding the wave that ultimately led her to find lots of success at the conference level. We discuss the culture of eating patterns and mindset on running teams at the high school, college, and professional level. We talk strategies for navigating toxic team cultures, including being around athletes struggling with disordered eating. Emily shares how her relationship with food has changed for the better, noting the positive influence of Olympians like Cory McGee, Ellie Purrier St Pierre and Abbey D'Agastino role modeling an “all foods fit” mindset, like we advocate for at Rise Up Nutrition. Emily explains how she's noticed that the higher the standard of performance the healthier the culture and the less restrictive and obsessive the eating habits: no coincidence, because in order to be the best you have to be well fuelled and happy! Now one of America's best athletes, it's easy to assume that Emily dominated the NCAA and graduated with many sponsorship offers to choose between; however, this could not be further from the truth. Never finishing as an All-American or even making NCAA's on the track, Emily shares how she bet on herself and balanced working as a nanny while running post-collegiately. Results did not come overnight, but her patience and trust in the process saw her steady progress to becoming one of the World's best, earning a professional contract along the way. We hear about the experiences Emily had training with Olympians on some of the best pro teams, and discuss the importance of role models and support systems, alongside self-belief and perseverance. These same approaches Emily took to her running we can all apply to our training and nutrition; whether it's getting your period, recovering from injury, or setting a PR, no matter where you are right now, by focusing on the process and the small steps you can take today, you can achieve your goals and we can all be fit, fierce and fuelled female athletes! Follow Emily on Instagram @em_durgin Emily's Official Bio: Emily Durgin is an American long-distance runner from Standish, Maine. She attended the University of Connecticut and was a 9-time American Athletic Conference Champion. After graduating from UConn in May 2017, Emily continued running professionally and became one of the top American road racers. She moved to Flagstaff, Arizona in 2019 and is sponsored by Adidas. This January she ran 67:54 in the Houston Half Marathon becoming the 6th fastest American ever. This week, I give you a little update on me and my running, talk about my race at the Houston Half Marathon in January, and ask about your opinion of the show. We are doing some remodeling in our house, so finding a quiet place to record has been difficult, but I sat down and gathered some thoughts in an echo-y room. I want to thank you all for being with me for the last two years, whether you're new, or started listening from the beginning. It's been a fun ride and I don't imagine dropping it any time soon. Houston was an amazing experience. I couldn't have done it without my wife, Carrie, who I wouldn't be able to do the running, coaching, and this whole podcast without. Shoutout to Taos Bakes for fueling my weekly mornings, and Organ Mountain Outfitters for their awesome performance wear, including the performance tank, thanks to Teresa for customizing, which was my tank of choice for the race. Lastly, what are you liking about the show? Is there anything you'd like to see going forward? I've considered a newsletter, YouTube, and possible TikTok components. But what are you interested in? Send me a message and let me know. Thanks again for the last two years. I'm hoping for many more. So enjoy the weather, enjoy your family, and keep running, New Mexico.
“I thought he just wanted to be my friend!” Love on the Run Week, day four! Today we're joined by Minnesota Distance Elite's Annie Frisbie and Dhru Patel. Annie is in the midst of a breakout year on the run. She made her marathon debut at the TCS New York City Marathon in November, where she ran a 2:26, finishing seventh overall and as the third American woman. That time was the fourth-fastest marathon debut by an American woman. Then, Annie signed her first professional sponsorship deal with Puma. Last month, she raced for the first time in her new kit and shoes at the Houston Half Marathon, running a 1:10, finishing 10th, and immediately saying she was "hungry for more." When she's not running professionally, Annie is a graphic designer. On this episode, we hear all about that day in New York City from Annie's perspective, and from Dhru's, who was there to support his girlfriend and teammate. Dhru explains why he's taking a running and training break right now, and about what his days look like without running and competing. Dhru is perhaps best known for making history in April 2019. He was a senior accounting major at North Central College and ran the 5,000 meters at a meet at Stanford. Dhru finished in 13:51, breaking a 42-year division-three record. Nell Rojas is on fire right now. This month, she signed a shoe deal with Adidas and recently finished the Houston Half Marathon in 9th place (with a PR of 1:09:42).She was born into a Boulder, Colorado running family—I think it's fair to say her dad, Ric Rojas, is a living legend in the running world. He was one of the first athletes to run for Nike, he won the very first BolderBoulder, and held the world record for the 15K. Now, he's Nell's coach—and she is following in his footsteps. Nell walked onto the running program at Northern Arizona University as a freshman, and by her senior year, she'd earned a running scholarship. After college, she became a pro triathlete and dabbled in obstacle course racing before jumping into her first marathon. She signed up to race the California International Marathon, thinking she ought to have a marathon under her belt if she was going to eventually do an Ironman triathlon, which was her plan. But after finishing 7th with a time of 2:31, she realized she had a ton of potential as a runner—and she still hasn't gotten around to that Ironman.Since then, Nell's running highlights include winning the BolderBoulder Citizen's Race (a lifelong dream of hers); winning Grandma's Marathon (in 2:28, a blistering 5:40 pace), and finishing 9th at the 2020 Olympic marathon trials on a hilly course in Atlanta. After a bit of a break due to an injury and the pandemic, she was the first American to cross the line at the 2021 Boston Marathon this fall, where she finished in 6th place overall. And this was immediately after lying in bed for days with a fever, wondering if she'd even be well enough to get to the start line.Connect with NellWebsite: rojasrunning.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/nell_rojas_runningTwitter: https://twitter.com/nellrojasTrigger warning: bulimia For full episode details CLICK HEREHave a question you'd like me to answer on the podcast?Ask it right hereSign up for my newsletter and get a FREE GIFT, 11 Things You Can Do Right Now to Feel Better About Your BodyWant to know my secrets for getting published in top publications? They're all in my e-book, 7 Pitches That Sold. I'm so grateful to Ben for jumping "On" from the Houston Half Marathon to share his exciting news of signing with On Running, where he'll be rocking his new kit in a stacked field and taking a swing at the Canadian National Record (61:28)! We discussed closing a great chapter with Reebok and Reebok Boston, his gratitude for them believing in him, and the support given. The close friendships built over many shared miles and experiences with Colin Bennie, Graham Crawford, Robby Andrews, Justyn Knight, and Josette Norris. The exciting new chapter with On, how this new deal came together, how their goals align and how collaborative the process was, and how stoked he is to join a talented roster with Oliver Hoare, Alicia Monson, George Beamish, Joe Klecker, and Morgan McDonald. How his fall buildup with Coach Fox and training partner Colin Bennie has him stronger and fitter than ever leading to big wins at the Canadian 10K Champs and Manchester. Ben's big future goals of stepping up to the Marathon, and qualifying to run 26.2 for Team Canada in Paris. I'm rooting hard for Ben to RIP a fast one in Houston against a stacked field and have another signature tape breaking moment and I'm so excited to follow his running journey with On moving forward! “That is how I always race — I've always got a smile on my face.” Dakotah Lindwurm runs happy. If you saw her leading the 2021 Boston Marathon — where she ultimately finished as the third American woman — you saw that smile on full display, from start to finish. And that smile just got a lot bigger, as Dakotah kicks off the new year with her first professional contract. Last week, Dakotah announced that she has officially signed with Puma, and that she will continue training with Minnesota Distance Elite. On this episode, the 2:29 marathoner (and former hockey goalie!) talks about her stellar past year on the run, which included two half-marathon personal bests and a win at Grandma's Marathon, where she also ran a personal best. She talks about being pegged as an underdog, and why she loves it, and about her goals for this weekend's Houston Half Marathon. In this episode of The XC Podcast, Alex Cyr talks with Rory Linkletter, a Canadian-American sponsored by Hoka One One, a member of the NAZ Elite squad, and running's equivalent to the Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man in the World. When Rory Linkletter ran 61:44 at the Houston Half Marathon in January, we all thought he was a shoe-in for making his first Canadian Olympic team. The, of course, COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic and the Games in Tokyo were postponed. Instead of packing it in for the year, the 24-year-old undertook several projects and challenges to outrun boredom. He started a podcast, he attempted to break Canada's one-hour run record, he bought a truck, he raced several virtual and in-person relays across the United States, he ran 2,000 feet up a mountain as hard as he could, he became a U.S. citizen, and now, he trains for his second-ever marathon. In this episode, Alex and Rory touch on several of these topics and more. Follow us on social @TheXCorg and visit our new content home: thexc.org
Harvey Nelson graduated from Northern Arizona University in May of 2019 with a B.S. in Exercise Science. He was part of the 3-time NCAA National Championship cross country team and still resides and trains in Flagstaff, AZ. We interviewed Harvey the night before the Olympic Trials in Atlanta one block from the start/finish. He was sitting there ready to run the biggest race of his life the next day. Even better, he had never even run a marathon before. Harvey exploded onto the road racing scene with a 1:01:46 at the Houston Half Marathon. This is a guy who never made top 7 of his XC team in college. How did he improve so quickly? We dig in. “I think I've just learned that whether you're running a 5-hour marathon, a 4-hour marathon, a 2-hour marathon, we all go through the same struggles in training—whether it's mental, whether it's physical—and [my athletes] are always telling me, ‘Oh my gosh, we look up to you because you're running 2 whatever hours,' and I'm like, ‘No, I'm looking up to you because your training runs for your long runs, you're out there for 3, 4 hours. That is amazing. You're balancing your family, your job, your running—that's what's truly amazing. My running, that's all I do all day is I go run. But you have all these other things you balance.' So I think they just show me that with determination, it's cheesy, but you can do anything because they're balancing real lives and still running great, which has been really fun.” Lindsay Flanagan is a professional distance runner sponsored by ASICS and she's gearing up for the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon on February 29. Last fall, she finished seventh at the Chicago Marathon in a personal best of 2:28:08 and most recently, at the Houston Half Marathon, she ran 1:09:37—a 2-1/2 minute improvement on her previous personal best—and is heading into Atlanta with some awesome momentum. We recently had a great conversation about how she's feeling heading into the Trials, why she's over the shoe discussion, and how she's learned to keep her composure in high-pressure situations. We talked about what Lindsay's learned from racing nine marathons over the past five years, dealing with injuries and the dangers of keeping too fit while she couldn't run, and the changes she's made in recent years to keep herself healthy and strong. We also talked about what she's taken away from working with age-group athletes as a coach with Run Doyen, who her heroes in the sport are, the popularity of her last name, and a whole lot more. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Addie Majnaric RDN and I ran the Houston Half Marathon this past weekend. She is 22 weeks pregnant and feeling great. Some would think eating plant based is not a good idea during pregnancy let alone running half marathons. In reality being pregnant is not a disease, but it is a time to optimize the mother's health for her sake and the sake of the baby. There are reports of running a marathon in the last few weeks of pregnancy but changes in ligaments and and joints tend to make the last trimester not that comfortable for running. If you are not a runner, then pregnancy is not really the time to start. But, a walking program is an excellent idea. A plant based diet is an excellent way to get the needed fiber to develop a good microbial system in mom and her child. A baby receives more genes from the mother than father because of microbe genes. Junk food, low fiber diet leads to a microbe population that may be associated with more inflammation. We will talk about this and much more. Exciting times are just around the corner. Join Addie and I for a Wellness Immersion vacation March 23-28, 2020 in sunny southwest Florida. It will be a fun filled week of plant based education, cooking, and exercise. There will be private consultations with both of us and hands on cooking technique experiences. It is a great time of year in Florida, so make your reservations now by going to doctordulaney.com and signing up. Email me with questions at jami@doctordulaney.com

"At this level, everyone works really hard. You can’t just say, 'Oh, she just works the hardest.' All the elite athletes on that starting line, everyone has their own challenges in their build up and had to overcome those. Everyone has their own story." Emily Sisson just might be having the best year of her life. The professional runner for New Balance kicked off her year by running a 1:07 at the Houston Half Marathon — coming just five seconds short of the American record. In April, Emily made her marathon debut at the London Marathon, where she ran a 2:23, finishing in sixth place and becoming the seventh-fastest U.S. woman ever at the marathon distance. It was also the second-fastest marathon debut by an American woman. This summer, Emily competed in the 10,000 meters at USA Track & Field Nationals, and landed a spot on the U.S. world team. She'll head to Doha later this month to represent the United States. On this episode, Emily reflects on her breakout year and talks about what's next, including where her head is at leading up to the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in February. She talks about what training at altitude is really like and what her training looks like right now, and she shares the game-changing marathon advice she got from Meb Keflezighi, Des Linden, and training partner Molly Huddle. Ryan Hall is a Dual US Marathon Olympian who has competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games finishing in 10th place and also in the 2012 London Games where Ryan was forced to retire early from the race for the first time in his career at approx. 10 miles. Ryan's best accolades are the outstanding US record he holds for the Half Marathon with a 59:43 in 2007 for the Houston Half Marathon, a record that still stands to this day. In 2011 in the Boston Marathon, Ryan achieved a 2:04:58 for the full marathon, he is still the only American Marathoner to go sub 2:05. In addition to Ryan's phenomenal 20 year distance running career, Ryan is now also known as a Best Selling author if his recently release memoire: Run the Mile You're In: Finding God in Every Step. During this episode we touch on a lot more than Ryan's running career, we certainly speak about the highs, the lows and the learnings, but Ryan also shares candidly around the process of adopting 4 Ethiopian Sisters several years ago. Ryan outlines how he went from a basketball loving teenager who had no interest in running to one day feeling inspired to run a 15 mile lap of his local lake. Ryan shares around why he thinks that eating a lot of bread the day before he ran 59:43 may have been so important, the concept of why happy feet make light feet, while listening to your body more than your watch can be so important in training. In this episode we speak with Ryan Hall -2x Olympian, American record holder, and author of the book Run the Mile You’re In. And in the quick tip segment, we answer a listener question about how to deal with chafing. Interview with Ryan Hall Ryan Hall set the U.S. record in the half marathon when he ran 59:43 at the Houston Half Marathon in 2007- the first American to break the one hour barrier. He placed 10th at the Olympic Marathon in Beijing. He’s the only American to run sub-2:05 (2:04:58 at Boston). His wife Sara is currently an elite runner and they have four adopted daughters from Ethiopia. In this episode we walk through the big themes of his new book Run the Mile You’re In. In this interview Ryan shares . . . What it means to run the mile you’re in. The importance of identity and the ability to not take your failures personally. How the African runners process failure. Goals of the heart. The comparison trap. Dealing with pain. Having a healthy body image. Mental toughness isn’t something you either have or don’t have. Mental toughness starts with the belief that you are mentally tough, and it is nurtured through positive declarations. Competing out of love results in superior strength. The next time you find yourself in a painful situation, find a way outside of yourself. Think about your love for God, your family, your friends, those you are helping. There is more strength inside of you than you can imagine when you fix your eyes on Jesus. All you have to do is stay close and stay in love, and you can endure incredible pain. Also Mentioned in This Episode Ryan Hall’s website:https://ryanandsarahall.com NuNee Device -designed specifically to relieve that dreaded Runner’s Knee pain. Reed Fischer joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast for the first time as a solo act. Last time he was on the show, he was a member of the Tinman Elite panel from a special taping in Des Moines. Reed is coming off a very strong showing at the 2019 Houston Half Marathon, where he finished 10th overall in 62:06 and was the top American. Fischer is just 23 years old but has emerged as a budding star on the U.S. distance running scene while training under Tom Schwartz. His run in Houston was more than a 50-second personal best. Fischer has been able to accomplish all of this early success in his professional career without an agent or major shoe company sponsor. However, after we finished taping, he said that he plans to make an announcement on Tuesday about a change. Keep your eyes on his Instagram account. Here's what he wrote in his race recap on the Tinman Elite official website about Houston: "Still feeling good, but it’s these moments of solitude before the chaos of this morning that allow my mind to wander into corners, both positive and negative. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t anxious. This is only my second half and I’ll be going up against some of the most experienced Americans on the roads right now. But that’s fine—they’ll lean on their experience to pull them through, I’ll lean on my lack of it. I’m excited to be here and excited to be doing this, and I know that’s more true for me than most of the field this morning. That gives me an edge that experience cannot: an unearned and unexpected level of confidence. I’m still the dark horse in this field." Enjoy the show. ------- The CITIUS MAG Podcast is brought to you by Strava. Personally, I believe Strava is the best app for runners and cyclists to keep track of all their training. It's another week of the 1609 pod, and we had quite a bit to cover this week. First up was the Houston Half Marathon, which nearly saw another American record. Next, we mourned Usain Bolt's bourgeoning soccer career and talked a bit about Dubai's prize purse and what it takes to be an IAAF Platinum race. After that, we covered some coaching changes and sponsor changes and took a look at the London Marathon start list. The 1609 Podcast is a proud member of the CITIUS MAG Podcast Family! Jim Walmsley re-joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after running 64:00 at the Houston Half Marathon to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. He plans to make his marathon debut at the trials in Atlanta. The last time that Jim was on the show, he was coming off a 14 hour, 30-minute course record at the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run. CITIUS MAG co-founder Stephen Kersh and contributor Eric Senseman join the podcast to give further context into Jim’s training and performance. Stephen participated in some of the workouts. Eric wrote a piece for CITIUS on Tuesday that was titled: “Why Should Running Fans Care About Jim Walmsley’s 64-Minute Half Marathon?” The piece is linked below. It drummed up a bit of debate on Twitter so we try to set the record straight and allow for Eric to explain his point further. Jim also participates in the discussion. Bonus: We played a clip from LetsRun where Robert Johnson says he’d bet on an East African with a 2:05 marathon personal best to sit and kick on Jim at Western States. The reaction is priceless. This is quite the episode. Why Should Running Fans Care About Jim Walmsley’s 64-Minute Half Marathon? http://citiusmag.com/jim-walmsley-64-minutes-houston-half-marathon/ ----- The CITIUS MAG Podcast is brought to you by Strava. Personally, I believe Strava is the best app for runners and cyclists to keep track of all their training. It helps keep me accountable as I get ready for the 2019 Tokyo Marathon in March. You know her, you love her, and she’s here today: Molly Huddle! Molly is a professional distance runner and 25-time national title holder who lives and trains in Providence, RI. On this episode, Molly talks about her Olympic dreams that started when she was young, and what it’s been like to actually achieve those dreams — twice. She talks about what it’s actually like competing at the Olympics (she represented Team USA in the 5K in 2012 and in the 10K in 2016), and explains why last year’s Olympics felt “like a local road race.” She also talks about the relationship between United States female distance runners right now (warm fuzzy alert!), how she trains her mental game, and her scariest career moments. Plus, she reflects on her marathon debut (at the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon), talks about being at the finish line for Shalane Flanagan’s 2017 NYCM win, and shares what’s next. (Since recording this episode, Molly has announced she will officially be racing the Boston Marathon in 2018! Go Molly!) Thomas Toth has taken the world by storm in the past year and a half. It was at last year’s Houston Half Marathon the then 24 year old runner of Lakefield made a name for himself. Late that year, he went on to take the half marathon national title in Calgary, qualify in November at the National Cross Champs, race this year at the Cross Country World Champs, and most recently, run a World Champs qualifying time of 2:18:58 in the Hamburg marathon with a debut that saw some very rocky conditions.
Alia and Noah recap their experience, for better or worse, at the humid 2017 Houston Half Marathon
