Commemorating Women's History Month in March 2025, media mogul Jessica Robertson joined the show. She is a co-founder and chief content officer of Togethxr, a media and commerce company founded by four of the world's greatest athletes: Alex Morgan, Chloe Kim, Simone Manuel, and Sue Bird. In 2023, Togethxr was named one of Fast Company's ten most innovative companies in sports and won Media Company of the Year in the 2023 DigiDay Media Awards. Robertson was the head of content at the Players' Tribune from 2015-2020 before joining Togethxr. Togethxr has published a new book entitled “Play It Forward: How Women are Changing Sports to Change the World.” The book is a collection of short stories profiling outstanding women athletes and their journey to stardom. In this episode, Robertson discusses her journey to Togethxr, and the origin of the book idea. She discusses the growth of women's sports and the indicators that certain sports continue to grow. She talks about athletes building their brands and how social media can still help them. She looks to recent ratings success as a springboard for larger platforms for female athletes. She also comments on the role of female broadcasters and how women are embracing new opportunities and still fighting for others. Check out Play it Forward here: https://bit.ly/43C8Qve

A Legend Among Us Simone Manual, one of the best swimmers of all-time joins us to talk about life, swimming, and giving back. An Olympic and World Champion and pioneering figure as the first black American woman to win Olympic gold in swimming, Simone has quite the CV. But she is charging on, having recently kicked off her season with some rust-busting, “off” events and is settling into her new training base in Austin with Bob Bowman. As one of the greatest “big moment” sprinters to ever stand behind the blocks, Simone surprisingly does not identify as a sprinter. She splits time among training groups and she shares some of the methods that have helped her achieve success. We also get to hear about how Simone is using her platform to celebrate, inspire, and empower both BIPOC athletes through the Simone Manual Foundation and female athletes through her work with TOGETHXR. This was a fun one. Enjoy and don't forget to subscribe for weekly podcasts and daily shorts!

Greg Meehan On Coaching Torri Huske Stanford and Katie Ledecky Episode 199

The NFL and swimming are not the same. In a world where coaches have a very short leash, a team that has a couple down years of performance along with some key high-profile athlete departures can be enough to sound the alarm. Thankfully, perhaps because its a sport based on longer term success over a 4-year period or greater, we were not robbed of the ultimate triumph we witnessed in Paris. For Greg Meehan, the last few years have been anything but easy. The longtime Stanford Head Women's Coach has been at the helm of some of the greatest NCAA teams ever assembled with names like Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel, Maya Dirado and Ella Eastin. But following the dominance of that unprecedented era, the program naturally regressed a tad. Some elite swimmers elected to find a change of scenery (Ledecky) and then other big names came to The Farm, only to leave early with medium results (Regan Smith and Claire Curzan). That put a lot of pressure and negativity on the Stanford program with many questioning its future, including its leader Greg Meehan. But great coaches have ups and downs just the same as athletes. Every team they coach is not the same. Every year comes with a new set of challenges and circumstances - and opportunities. In Paris, Greg Meehan and his star pupil Torri Huske celebrated. Huske's dramatic 100 fly victory over world record holder Gretchen Walsh, along with her other individual and relay performances culminated in Huske becoming the winningest American swimmer at the Games. And with that, Huske and Meehan put all the doubts to rest, and one of the best coaches in the world today has yet another Stanford gold medal for recruits to hear about so he can keep building the machine. There are two types of announcers at major televised swim meets like NCAA Championships and US Olympic Trials: the big-time network pros in the nice upstairs booth who sit before the cameras with their play-by-play and color commentary, whose words get no immediate feedback or reaction, and then there are the solo announcers, usually on-deck with all of the attending media reps, communicating directly via the PA system with the seats in the stands, the ones whose job it is to provide more than names and numbers to the spectators on-site. Kevin Cargill is a former HS and college swimmer who has been mentioned as a possible successor to the big shoes and stellar heights reached by the late Sam Kendricks, "America's Swim Meet Announcer". At the 2024 World Championships in Doha, Kate Douglass swam a 23.91 50 free, good for silver behind world record holder Sarah Sjostrom. That broke the previous American record held by Simone Manuel. Douglass explains that getting through Sarah Sjostrom to reach the top of the podium is an obstacle that many have tried and few have succeeded. She has been training for the 200 IM and she is the reigning world champion in it, so she feels more confident in focusing on that event (that does overlap with the 50 free at the Olympic Trials and the Olympic Games).

In this episode, we explore Gunning's personal journey through the sport, touching on the unique challenges he faced as a minority in a field traditionally under-represented by people of color. He opens up about his experiences, from dealing with stereotypes to finding his place in his squad, and how he navigated these hurdles to become an inspiration for many. We discuss the persistent stereotype that black people can't swim, a notion that Gunning has consistently debunked throughout his career. He shares his thoughts on how to encourage more black people to engage in swimming, by eradicating this stereotype and the importance of showcasing successful black athletes such as Simone Manuel, Alia Atkinson, and Cullen Jones. In a larger context, we look at the importance of representation in media, specifically discussing the upcoming Disney film, The Little Mermaid, where Ariel is cast as black. Gunning's passion for inclusivity extends to his work with Speedo United, a company making strides in advocating for diversity and pride. He delves into the concept of equality in today's society and shares his personal experiences with coming out, touching on the impact of social media in spreading awareness and inspiring people to be true to themselves. We also acknowledge his commendable work in increasing LGBTQ+ visibility worldwide, for which he has won several accolades. As the latest recruit to the AP team and an active Diversity Champion, Gunning speaks about his role in AP International and the AP Inclusivity Series. He discusses what it means for him to be part of this team, why he chose AP, and his aspirations for his role. Don't miss out on this insightful conversation with Michael Gunning, a figure who has consistently used his platform to advocate for diversity and inclusion in swimming, and beyond. At some point in time, the great swimmers cease competing against the field and ascend to a level where their performances are works of art, solely focused on what they can make their bodies do in the water. At 2023 NCAAs, we witnessed the transcendence of Gretchen Walsh. She became the fastest 100 yard backstroker ever, by a wide margin, with her ridiculous 48.26. Even her sister Alex (Olympian, World Champion) said she didn't think that time was possible. Gretchen Walsh also nearly took down Simone Manuel's 100 free record which hasn't had anyone come near it since it was set in 2017. We caught up with Gretchen and share lots of laughs in this very casual hangout episode. Enjoy!

“Anti-Blackness is woven into the fabric of our society” - Jamal Hill In what might be one of our most self-reflective episodes yet, for the last installment of Swimming Week Johanna and Derek are joined by Jamal Hill, a Black Paralympic swimmer who is currently training for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. We talk to Jamal about what it was like growing up not only as a Black person in the US—where he suggested he only felt comfortable speaking openly about his feelings about racism in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder in 2020—but as a black swimmer with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in a predominantly white sport. Jamal credits the YMCA in providing opportunities for Black and other minoritized Americans to learn how to swim, and discusses the challenges that CMT poses for his training and the importance of advocating for sporting opportunities for children with disabilities. Importantly, Jamal's grasp of the broader, 600+ year history of Black swimming thanks to Kevin Dawson and Jeff Wiltse's historical works, underpins his perspective on the extent to which American swim has or has not changed (hint: not much). In the second half of the episode, Jamal shares his thoughts on a wide variety of topics, from what it meant to learn about and present to public audiences on IG TV about Dawson's historical work on the African diaspora's rich aquatics history, to the limitations of white swimmers' activism today (with huge props to Simone Manuel, Naomi Osaka, and others). He moreover offered a compelling perspective about elite swimming's future in the US: should it remain an NCAA sport when it does not generate revenue, or should swimmers branch out and pursue different training opportunities beyond the college model? You might be surprised at his answer! You can find Jamal Hill on Instagram @swimuphill and on Twitter @swimuphill, and his foundation to teach one million children how to swim, Swim Up Hill, here. Jamal Hill's fantastic IG TV video for the USA Master's Swimming Instagram account can be found here.
