Vivian welcomes Riley Brain to Hempresent to discuss Riley's business, Wandering Bud. Riley had a background in music education and was feeling unfulfilled in her teaching career, so in 2016 she decided to create her own business offering unique and fashionable cannabis smoking paraphernalia. She wanted a product that could look naturally displayed among her art objects in her home, which is why she chose ceramic as the material to make her pipes, bongs, and accessories. Ceramic is opaque and easy to clean, and Riley found a second-hand kiln to use for the process. She has been successful in the industry, with her fans ranging from cannabis connoisseurs and home decor aficionados to those simply curious or seeking aesthetic inspiration.Riley and her team of seven women artists design a specialized selection of cannabis-related merchandise as part of their commitment to building an equitable community. To support equity, Riley's team hires people of color, collaborates with black and brown artists, contracts with other workers, and donates to two organizations each month. One is local, Kansas City Gift, which provides grants to black-owned businesses on the city's east side. The other is Broccoli Magazine's Floric Coalition, which donates to different equity-oriented organizations. Having a studio based on Truce Avenue, a historic racial dividing line in Kansas City, is a constant reminder of the need to give back to the community.Riley Brain of Wandering Bud is a female canopreneur who is optimistic about the progress being made in the cannabis industry. She discussed the challenges faced by women in the industry, particularly the “grass ceiling” which is an extension of the glass ceiling idea. Riley also commented on the incident at MJ BIZCON where a group of men was wearing t-shirts that said “buy weed from rich white men”, which was met with backlash from the community. Riley then discussed her product line of unique cannabis smoking pieces and accessories, which are available on her website and at various retailers.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else feel like manners and common courtesy have been thrown to the wolves? I mean literally, people behave like wolves. In this past year I've witnessed the worst of people..rude, inconsiderate, selfish and sometimes just plain despicable. I truly believe the world is a better place when all people show respect, kindness and consideration, and there is no better person to dig into this topic than Lizzie Post. Lizzie is the great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post and a co-president of the Emily Post Institute. She is also the co-host of the Awesome Etiquette podcast. I grew up with Emily's Post's book of Etiquette sitting on a table in our living room and while my mom never made me read the book cover to cover, the contents were communicated and good manners were non-negotiable.  Lizzie and I are talking about modern manners and the ways in which we can handle ourselves with consideration, respect, and honesty.    About Lizzie Lizzie is the great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post, and author of Higher Etiquette, and co-author of Emily Post's Etiquette 19th edition as well as Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette 6th edition, and The Etiquette Advantage in Business 3rd edition. The audience for cannabis content has grown rapidly over the last decade - but who writes it, what value does it provide, and what challenges make this niche so unique? Here to answer these questions is Lauren Yoshiko. She's a writer, cannabis journalist, magazine editor, and the host of Broccoli Talk, Broccoli Magazine's official podcast. She's a cannabis speaker on branding and women in weed, a budtender, the harvest manager of Cannabis Farm, a copywriter, and a well-respected advocate for women, minorities, and small businesses within the cannabis space. Twice a week, she publishes the Broccoli Report, where she writes about topics including industry news and stoner lifestyle accessories, giving both entrepreneurs and users the inside scoop. Today, Lauren joins the podcast to talk about how she entered the cannabis industry, and what cannabis tourism may look like post-COVID. KEY TAKEAWAYS The stigmas and myths around cannabis that Lauren encountered in her early twenties, the cultural shifts that helped her get her first cannabis column, and why she had to write under a pseudonym to protect her corporate job at a Fortune 500 company. Why so many brands are looking to shake the legacy of stoner imagery while retaining parts of it - and why so many brands are crashing and failing. How illegal dispensaries successfully operate while masquerading as legitimate ones. What cannabis tourism and consumption spaces may look like. How working as a grower helped Lauren better understand the labor that goes into cannabis production and led her straight into her career in journalism. How Broccoli differentiated itself from publications like High Times, and why Lauren's work stands out in a culture that can be very “bro-y.” Why Lauren hopes to see interstate commerce before full federal legalization. WTF is the ECS? What else does it do? And do we even need weed in order to keep this system healthy? Zoe updates us on the latest science and explains what we're still learning/that there is still a lot to learn. Plus: can we trust the claims being made by cannabis brands? Zoe untangles the complex relationship between regulations and research, and offers some tips on making educated choices.

Today we’re sitting down with freelance writer and deputy editor of Broccoli Magazine, Ellen Freeman, as well as Sharada Tolton - graphic designer, product photographer, and art educator for persons with disabilities. I initially approached Ellen on the basis of discussing her written work, and her current position at Broccoli Magazine, but it soon turned into a trio convo that, serendipitously, has come out the other end in what I can only describe as an ode to friendship, and the ways in which their’s supports them on a personal and professional level. What started out as a mutual disinterest in their peer’s gusto for Biology, not to mention Sharada’s innate styling of Dungarees, has led to the eventual co-founding of Muff, “a bi-annual magazine of feminism and esoterics.” I hope you lend us an ear as, once again, the friendship honed between ladies shows to be one of connection, collaboration, and sisterhood.
