A WEED GROWS IN PORTLAND—Anja Charbonneau would be the first to admit she didn't have a strategy in mind when she launched her dreamy celebration of all things marijuana, Broccoli magazine, back in 2016. Having worked as a freelance photographer and writer, and then as Creative Director of lifestyle favorite Kinfolk, she started Broccoli with the simple idea to explore Portland's then burgeoning cannabis scene and its culture.Fast forward to today: Anja Charbonneau oversees a publishing conglomerate that produces a number of magazines, books, and something called “oracle cards”—while also spearheading an advocacy group, and a whole lot more. If anything has changed, ironically, it's that the last edition of Broccoli was the last edition of Broccoli. Yes, there are new magazines on the way, and new books, and new ideas to explore, because Anja Charbonneau does not sit still, even while sitting atop her nascent empire. From cats to mushrooms to artful snails to all things celestial, Broccoli publishes stuff that tastes great and that's good for you and your soul.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Freeport Press. Every working mother feels the crushing weight of juggling professional obligations with the demands of raising a family. American corporate culture has long been defined by its inflexibility and lack of acknowledgment of workers' responsibilities outside the workplace. This leaves many of the 85 million mothers in the United States in a difficult position. As more women reevaluate their career choices, the logical answer for some has been to start their own businesses. But where to start? Enter MOTHER / FOUNDER: 68 Women on the Trials and Triumphs of Starting a Business and Raising a Family (Artisan Books; October 22, 2024; $35) by self-employed moms Amanda Jane Jones--co-creator and founding designer of Kinfolk--and former magazine and digital editor Jennifer Fernandez. An empowering celebration of women who are dedicated mothers and successful entrepreneurs, it reveals how each woman pursued their entrepreneurial dreams, overcame obstacles, and found professional contentment, all while providing for their families and parenting their children. The book's variety is powerful: it features farmers, lawyers, midwives, pastry chefs, authors, multihyphenate brand-builders (like Jungalow's Justina Blakeney)—and more. Some readers will enjoy MOTHER / FOUNDER as a daily burst of inspiration; others, curious about what it would take to make the leap, can use it as a practical roadmap for considering their next steps. It's a gift of encouragement both for women at the beginning of their careers and for those feeling stale, stuck, and ready for something new.Jones and Fernandez are refreshingly open about their own struggles and triumphs with balancing motherhood and creative ambition. To quote Brené Brown, who is featured in the book's introduction, “It is a terrible myth to believe that once we have children, our journey ends and theirs begins. For many of us, the most interesting and productive times in our lives come after we have children.” Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

From the revolutionary Lounge Chair to the vibrant, Mondrian-inspired glass walls of their Case Study House, Ray's vision and meticulous artistry shaped modernism as we know it.But behind the sleek lines and bold colors was a woman often mistaken for a man—'Ray,' they assumed, must surely be Charles's male counterpart. This misconception gave her an unexpected advantage, opening doors that might have otherwise stayed closed.Yet, Ray's journey was anything but easy. She endured a lifetime of her contributions being overshadowed, her name eclipsed by Charles's fame, and even the painful betrayal of his infidelity. Still, she poured everything into their work, her impact far deeper than most people know. About AmandaNEW BOOK! Artist, creative technologist, and educator, Idris Brewster grew up in Brooklyn, being filmed for a documentary about his education as a black student at a prestigious, primarily white, school. His coming-of-age, only partially caught on camera, included a lot of basketball and hands-on artistic development. A grant awarded in college gave him early access to VR technology which opened a path to combining all of his talents and interests and expressing them through new media. Now, as co-founder and Executive Director of Kinfolk Foundation, he's harnessing augmented reality, location-based technology, and community to engage in placing digital monuments in public spaces, memory building, and foregrounding the Black, Brown and Queer histories that have been intentionally silenced. The new kingdom Jesus presents in not the resurrection of the old kingdom of God found in the Hebrew Bible. The old Kingdom was a physical kingdom with boundaries and politics. The new Kingdom has no boundaries. It expands only when Jesus changes a heart and mind.

In this episode of the Share the Wealth Show, we're thrilled to have Verneda White and Vivian Wright back with us. They'll be diving deeper into their past experiences in wholesaling real estate, discussing the complexities of business relationships, and emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and growth in achieving financial success. Here's a glimpse of what they'll cover:
For New Orleans-based film composer Sultana Isham, plunging into research on her subject matter is as important as creating her score. Trained as a classical violinist, she moved from her native Virginia to New Orleans to steep herself in one of her passions, the peoples, history and culture of Créolité throughout the Americas and abroad. Once in New Orleans, Sultana Initially busked in various venues around New Orleans and then started playing with Les Cenelles, an ensemble devoted to Creole folk music and work by composers of color. She began to write her own pieces, and in 2017 she put out her first EP, “Blood Moon,” a mixture of avant-garde classical and pop fusion, attracting the attention of director Zandashé Brown, who hired her to write the score for the horror short “Blood Runs Down.” Other directors soon came knocking on her door.Director Angela Tucker hired her to be both researcher and composer on the documentary, “All Skinfolk Ain't Kinfolk,” a PBS documentary about a historic New Orleans mayoral race between two Black women. Among Sultana's other credits are “The Neutral Ground,” which also aired on PBS and received an Emmy nomination for best historical documentary, and the PBS series “Making Black America,” narrated by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.Sultana's scholarship continues unabated. LSU Press is developing an essay she co-wrote with Dr. Denise Frazier – “Mémwa Nwa: Agency, Sound and Women in AfroCreole Louisiana Folk Music” – into a book. A month before this interview, she concluded her residency at Ace Hotel New Orleans by co-curating an exhibit titled “Them Handy Sisters,” celebrating the careers of noted performers and musicologists Dr. Geneva Handy Southall and D. Antoinette Handy. Here, Sultana explains how she developed her musical skills hand-in-hand with her research practice and why heeding her heart and feeding her curiosity continue to open incredible new doors for her.https://www.sultanaisham.com/

Daniel Augustin talks life-long friendships through music, working on Rap "Shi!t", and being your own advocate! About Daniel: Daniel is a Haitian American actor, director, writer, and musician born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His entertainment journey started with his discovery and passion for music at his parents church. He was a natural, frequenting the control room, where he learned to manage the soundboard and record audio. By age ten, he became a hip-hop recording artist when he took part in forming the gospel rap group, Mav-7. At age 21, he co-produced and recorded his first solo, Neo-Soul, and hip-hop album titled: I'm Sorry 4 the Delay. Eager to learn about the other facets of entertainment, Daniel started his television career working as a production assistant on As Seen On TV. This experience catapulted his passion, interest and excitement for the entertainment industry and he became hungry to take on greater roles. Daniel and his wife/creative partner created a production company, Augustin Productions, where they have produced over five short films and created two digital series, Cake (@cake_theseries), which released on IGTV and Kinfolk (@kinfolktheseries). With these projects, he combined his love and expertise on developing the music, production, editing and directing. His series Kinfolk was widely recognized and selected into Tribeca's 2022 Creator's Market. With so much success behind the camera, it's no surprise Daniel is as impressive (not to mention charming) in front of the camera as well! He has been featured on the hit series Grey's Anatomy and has notable recurring roles on the highly popular spinoff Hulu series How I Met Your Father, alongside Hilary Duff, and Hulu's Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Daniel is most known from his fan-favorite role as Maurice on the HBO Max hit comedy series Rap Sh!t. Maurice is the lead Shawna's (Aida Osman) friend and co-worker at the Miami hotel. Together they start a fraud ring, along the way blurring the lines of friendship and romance. Rap Sh!t, which has an astounding 100% rotten tomatoes score, is an inclusive and inspirational comedy series about two estranged high school friends who through both the dream of trying to become rappers and the need to survive, decide to try to break into the music industry. The series is inspired by the real story of the founding and later success of the rap duo City Girls. Daniels undeniable talent and impression he made on Season 1 landed him as a series regular on Rap Sh!t Season 2, produced by the incomparable Issa Rae (creator of standout comedy series HBO's Insecure). He is excited to show the world what is in store for Maurice in Season 2! In his free time Daniel enjoys boxing, playing basketball, creating music, and reading. He is passionate about helping and mentoring aspiring filmmakers in film school and serving his Haitian community in any way he can. Additionally, he wants to spread awareness on the importance of men's health (getting regular check-ups and colonoscopies). Daniel also loves spending time with his wife and furry child Teddy, his spunky golden retriever. Follow the show on social media! On this episode, we have the ridiculous joy of welcoming Sean Dietrich to the pod. Sean, who also writes under the name Sean of the South, is one of the most creative people I know. He writes long form, short story, fiction, memoir, narrative essay, some of the absolute best stuff on social media, and as of this fall, Kinfolk, one of my favorite novels of all time. I feel a little like a sloth when I think about Sean's productivity, but he's such a nice guy, I can only be happy for him (and for us!). I'll say no more and just let you listen in because this guy doesn't need any more introduction from a Northerner or anyone else. Sean Dietrich is a columnist, novelist, and stand-up storyteller known for his commentary on life in the American South. His work has appeared in Newsweek, Southern Living, Reader's Digest, Garden and Gun, The Tallahassee Democrat, the Birmingham News, The Mobile Press Register, and his column appears in newspapers throughout the U.S. He has authored fifteen books, he is the creator of the Sean of the South Podcast, and makes appearances on the Grand Ole Opry. You can find Sean at SeanDietrich.com and Facebook and Instagram @seanofthesouth Visit KimberlyStuart.com/podcast for more from this episode.

Kinfolk: Black Lands is described by co-founder Idris Brewster as "an Augmented Reality Archive of Black, Brown, LGBTQ, and underrepresented history in general using the power of immersive storytelling and immersive media to uplift stories from our past and connect those with the present and the future." It's an application that features over 20 prominent figures from Black History including digital monuments and statues that you can place in your home or local outdoor environments. There are also a number of public spaces of historical importance that have site-specific AR installations to engage audiences in the places where these histories occurred. I've covered a previous incarnation of Kinfold when it was Movers and Shakers back in episode #656 with Glenn Cantave when it was focused on recontextualizing the Christopher Columbus monument in New York City with augmented reality art. I had a chance to catch up with Idris at Tribeca Immersive 2023 to unpack the current state of the their Kinfolk project as well as Kinfolk app for iOS and Kinfolk app for Android, each with native AR features. We also dig into some future plans for their continued content expansion, looking into more immersive and volumetric work, and the potentials for more speculative future art that taps into the Black Imagination and Afrofuturism potentialities. Kinfolk earned a special jury mention for Tribeca Immersive Storyscapes with a jury comment saying, "A profound and authentic representation of the Black experience in America, KINFOLK's mission to bring history to contemporary audiences through AR technology not only celebrates the richness of Black culture and history in New York City and beyond, but also serves as a powerful tool for education and understanding, making it a standout contender deserving of recognition."
