A WEED GROWS IN PORTLAND—Anja Charbonneau would be the first to admit she didn't have a strategy in mind when she launched her dreamy celebration of all things marijuana, Broccoli magazine, back in 2016. Having worked as a freelance photographer and writer, and then as Creative Director of lifestyle favorite Kinfolk, she started Broccoli with the simple idea to explore Portland's then burgeoning cannabis scene and its culture.Fast forward to today: Anja Charbonneau oversees a publishing conglomerate that produces a number of magazines, books, and something called “oracle cards”—while also spearheading an advocacy group, and a whole lot more. If anything has changed, ironically, it's that the last edition of Broccoli was the last edition of Broccoli. Yes, there are new magazines on the way, and new books, and new ideas to explore, because Anja Charbonneau does not sit still, even while sitting atop her nascent empire. From cats to mushrooms to artful snails to all things celestial, Broccoli publishes stuff that tastes great and that's good for you and your soul.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Freeport Press. What can the history of science tell us about the world we live in today and where we might be headed tomorrow? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome historian of science Rebecca Charbonneau, PhD from the American Institute of Physics and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory with expertise in radio astronomy and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). This episode kicks off with Allen and Chuck talking about January's Lunar Occultation of Mars. You can see a photo taken by Chuck on our YouTube Community tab. And then it's time for today's joyfully cool cosmic thing: a recent paper in the Astrophysical Journal Letters confirming there are galaxies that were fully formed just 400 million years after The Big Bang. Chuck, who studies galactic evolution, tells us why this changes our understanding of galaxy formation. Rebecca talks about how new ideas can be controversial and how personalities, politics and cultures can impact the evolution of science. She brings up the current controversy in astronomy concerning the locations of terrestrial telescopes and the tension between scientific and cultural imperatives. She also recounts seeing people in Russia wearing NASA t-shirts and explains how NASA understood the importance of controlling the narrative, even inviting Norman Rockwell to popularize the space program. Our first question comes from Pablo P. on Patreon, who asks, “Can humanity be destroyed by AI powered by quantum computing?” Rebecca explains how during the Cold War, scientists on both sides engaged in “science diplomacy” that helped lower tensions. She applies this thinking to AI, pointing out that while a “Terminator-like” scenario is unlikely, public concern is causing the tech world to confront and grapple with real threats from AI like biases in hiring algorithms. Allen, a mathematician who writes about AI professionally, addresses whether AI powered by quantum computing is more dangerous than AI in general. Rebecca shares the terrifying story of a Soviet nuclear submarine and the US navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis that nearly started a nuclear war. The dissenting actions of a single officer named Vasily Arkhipov made the difference, and she wonders if AI would have made the same decision based on the available data. For our next question, we return to our Pablo P. from Patreon for his follow up: “How [do] we answer the question about whether or not we are engaging in self-destructive behavior?” Chuck and Rebecca discuss the confluence of astronomy and the military, and how the history of the SETI program highlights their shared concerns. You'll find out what the Drake Equation has to do with concepts like The Great Filter. Science, she reminds us, is a tool to try to get closer to the truth, but it's not always perfect in pointing out whether what we're doing is safe or potentially self-destructive. Then we turn to Rebecca's other big passion, art history and the window into the human experience that art provides. Charles brings up The Scream by Edvard Munch and the fact that it's actually a depiction of a real atmospheric event. Rebecca talks the use of fractal studies to determine the authenticity of Jackson Pollock art. She also explores the artistic value of scientific artifacts like the controversial plaque attached to Pioneer 10 depicting a naked man and woman, and the interstellar Arecibo Message, sent by Frank Drake in 1974. You'll even hear how Frank worked himself into the message and what that has to do with Albrecht Durer's self-portrait painted in the year 1500. Finally, we turn to what Rebecca's been up to recently. Her new book Mixed Signals came out in January of this year. Keep up with her on her website at and follow her on X @rebecca_charbon and on BlueSky @rebeccacharbon.bsky.social. In this episode, we sit down with historian, Dr. Rebecca Charbonneau to explore her fascinating new book, Mixed Signals. At the height of the Cold War, amidst nuclear brinkmanship and deep political divides, an unlikely collaboration emerged between the United States and the Soviet Union in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Rebecca dives into the extraordinary partnership between Ukrainian astrophysicist Iosif Shklovsky and American astronomer Carl Sagan, whose groundbreaking work in radio astronomy brought the hunt for alien signals into the scientific mainstream. From bizarre experiments—like sending the sound of ballerinas' movements into space—to navigating the political tightrope of Cold War diplomacy, this story is as thrilling as it is thought-provoking. Join us as Rebecca unpacks how the search for alien life not only opened up new frontiers in science but also fostered a unique philosophy of international collaboration, proving that even amidst earthly tensions, humanity could unite in its curiosity about the cosmos.PODCAST UFO T-SHIRTSSHOW NOTESBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/podcast-ufo--5922140/support.
In the shadow of the Cold War, whispers from the cosmos fueled an unlikely alliance between the US and USSR. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (or SETI) emerged as a foundational field of radio astronomy characterized by an unusual level of international collaboration—but SETI's use of signals intelligence technology also served military and governmental purposes. In this captivating new history of the collaboration between American and Soviet radio astronomers as they sought to detect evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations, historian Dr. Rebecca Charbonneau reveals the triumphs and challenges they faced amidst a hostile political atmosphere. Shedding light on the untold stories from the Soviet side for the first time, she expertly unravels the complex web of military and political interests entangling radio astronomy and the search for alien intelligence, offering a thought-provoking perspective on the evolving relationship between science and power. Mixed Signals: Alien Communication Across the Iron Curtain (Polity, 2024) is not just a story of radio waves and telescopes; it's a revelation of how scientists on both sides of the Iron Curtain navigated the complexities of the Cold War, blurring the lines between espionage and the quest for cosmic community. Filled with tension, contradiction, and the enduring human desire for connection, this is a history that transcends national boundaries and reaches out to the cosmic unknown, ultimately asking: how can we communicate with extraterrestrials when we struggle to communicate amongst ourselves? This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In one of the most shocking crimes to hit Delmarva, a hard-working and well-liked woman orchestrated the murder of two men with the help of her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend. Nothing about this case was simple, with complex timelines, missing men, and horrific discoveries. With the family connections with almost everyone involved in this case and very questionable decisions made by both the mastermind and police, it was still just a matter of time before her plan began to unravel. So let's explore the murders of John Charbonneau and Billy Sproates, planned by a woman very close to each of them, Linda Charbonneau. What is Ethereum's North Star, and does it even need one? There has been angst in the Ethereum community, growing over the last year, as Ethereum has become squeezed by its competition. Bitcoin's story as money is growing in mainstream society. Solana has captured the hot ball of money in crypto. And Celestia's data availability continues to progress at a faster rate than what is found at home in Ethereum. This is Ethereum's Three-Front War, a topic we covered in a recent episode with Justin Drake. And today we‘re joined by Jon Charbonneau and Mike Ippolito to contextualize and diagnose what Ethereum needs in order to thrive in this competitive landscape. ------
In today's episode, we explore the next evolution of the modular blockchain landscape with Nick White and Jon Charbonneu. Celestia's base layer now supports 21 chains and is pushing sovereign rollups as the next step. As a minimalist data availability focused L1, Celestia has had a big year with a lot yet to come. Our conversation explores the mechanics behind Celestia's blockchain design, from lazybridging to ZK accounts. We talk about the next evolution of the Celestia roadmap, focused on building a native ecosystem of interoperable rollups. The rise of altVMs, Celestia's recent upgrades, and light nodes were also touched on. Towards the end, we discuss TIA, the asset, and how it is used in the Celestia ecosystem as well as how Jon thinks about valuing it amongst other base layer assets. For today's episode, we were joined by Tarun & Jon to take a closer look at one of the most compelling debates in crypto: The valuation, 'moneyness', collateral asset viability, and onchain usage of ETH vs. SOL. Is there a real chance that Solana could flip Ethereum in the next several years? Ethereum, with its ETF advantage and rollup-centric focus, is standing strong but may face hurdles in maintaining its lead. Solana, on the other hand, is rapidly onboarding builders and capturing liquidity, though challenges like token inflation and VC token distribution are posing strong headwinds. We'll also touch on the bigger picture: how collateral utility, tokenomics, and market behavior influence the monetary premium of these assets. This episode was particularly interesting because of the dynamic of Tarun from his math background and Jon with his research and venture background. Just before 4 PM, Kristen Charbonneau stepped out from beneath the pink canopy of Baby Doll's, a gentleman's club located on the border between Euless and Fort Worth. She has never been seen again. For years her family have waged a dedicated campaign to bring attention to her case, to locate the missing woman and to see the man responsible placed behind bars. Just when the case was beginning to grow cold everything changed when a suspect was arrested and charged with first degree murder.Unfortunately, after a prime witness recanted her statement, he walked free, leaving both investigators and the Charbonneau family to continue the search for Kristen while wading through a murky pool of lies, deception and immeasurable grief.Charbonneau Family WebsiteUse promo code "Trace" to save 10% on your ticket to CrimeCon in Orlando at CrimeCon.comTrace Evidence FacebookInstagramTwitterOfficial WebsiteOfficial MerchMusic Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/#truecrime #truecrimepodcast #realcrimes #disappearance #disappeared #missing #unsolved #unsolvedmysteries #evidence #investigation #missingperson #traceevidence #truecrimes #mysterious #KristenCharbonneau #Charbonneau #texascrime #euless
