In this Kitchen Side podcast episode, David, Alex, and Ali, co-founders of Omniscient Digital, discuss the nuances of working in vs. on a business and how both are essential for growth. They explore the concept of "founder mode," reflecting on both the benefits and risks of hands-on leadership. The team introduces the "traffic trap," a phenomenon where businesses prioritize traffic over meaningful conversions, and the importance of aligning organic growth efforts with broader marketing strategies. Through personal anecdotes and insights from client work, the discussion highlights how businesses can bridge the gap between goals, strategy, and execution for sustainable growth.Key TakeawaysWorking In vs. On a Business: The conversation explores the tension between performing day-to-day operations and strategizing for future growth. Both are essential, and success lies in balancing these roles rather than separating them entirely.Founder Mode and Leadership Nuances: Founder mode, popularized by Paul Graham and Brian Chesky, emphasizes a hands-on approach. However, the hosts warn that it can justify both good and bad behavior if not applied thoughtfully. The Traffic Trap: A common issue where businesses focus excessively on increasing traffic without aligning it with lead generation and conversions. The episode discusses the importance of optimizing content and organic programs to drive meaningful business outcomes beyond just page views.Creating Systems Without Losing Flexibility: SOPs and processes can streamline operations but require continuous iteration. The team emphasizes the need to stay close to the work to ensure systems evolve with market changes.Multi-Channel Alignment for Organic Growth: Organic traffic should not be managed in isolation. Effective programs require alignment with paid campaigns, email nurturing, and retargeting strategies to maximize results.Show LinksConnect with David Khim on LinkedIn and TwitterConnect with Alex Birkett on LinkedIn and TwitterConnect with Allie Decker on LinkedIn and TwitterConnect with Omniscient Digital on LinkedIn or TwitterWhat is Kitchen Side? One big benefit of running an agency or working at one is you get to see the “kitchen side” of many different businesses; their revenue, their operations, their automations, and their culture. You understand how things look from the inside and how that differs from the outside. You understand how the sausage is made. Have you ever felt like you're navigating the difficulties of entrepreneurship all on your own? Do you wonder if the challenges you face are unique to you? In this episode of Leadership is Feminine, host Kris Plachy reveals the seven unavoidable truths that every female founder and entrepreneur encounters on their journey to success. Kris starts by addressing the uncomfortable issues that every business leader must face. She emphasizes that whatever challenge or person you wish to avoid, your business will inevitably force you to confront it. Whether it's having difficult conversations, trusting your intuition, or working in partnerships, these challenges are inescapable. Kris discusses the reality that as the founder, you hold the ultimate decision-making power. If you are the one taking all the risks, it is imperative that you make the final calls. This responsibility is a fundamental aspect of leadership that can't be delegated. Another key truth is the ever-changing nature of everyone involved in a business. Kris talks about the inevitability of change—people will leave, roles will evolve, and you, as a leader, will also grow and transform. She stresses the importance of adapting to these changes to maintain a thriving business. Kris further explains that the people who helped you get to your current level might not be the same ones who will take you to the next stage of your journey. This truth emphasizes the need for continuous evaluation and evolution of your team and personal growth. This episode of Leadership is Feminine is a discussion of leadership truths that every business runner faces. Tune in for a thoughtful exploration of these concepts to better understand and enhance your leadership journey. “You are already born to lead. You just don't know it. If you struggle with leading, I believe it's not because you're not capable. It's because you don't believe in what you already know about yourself and you question it.” Key Takeaways From This Episode Importance of Facing Challenges Head-On: Your business has a way of forcing you through whatever you don't want to deal with. No One Thinks Like You: Establishing clarity on the outcomes and not expecting that things will be done the way you would do them. Responsibility of a Founder in Decision-Making: Ensure that you are not abdicating in areas of risk in your business. The Destructive Impact of Unaddressed Issues in a Business: Avoiding problems in your business won't make them go away. The Inevitable Change of Your Team and You: Setting the expectation that people on your team will change, and so will you. Those who got you here won't get you there. And the person you were when you started is not the same version of you that will get you to your goals. Delineation of Individual Successes Separate From the Overall Business Success: Your success is not their success, and ensuring that compensation is attached with performance and results, not based on how you feel. Making the jump from a well-funded C-suite position straight into launching your own small business can be a shock to the system. But there are a couple lessons you can take from the C-suite to make your entrepreneurship journey more successful — and there's no one better to teach those than our latest guest, Erin Marcus. Erin is an international speaker and the founder and CEO of Conquer Your Business. Having made the successful leap from corporate executive to entrepreneur and small business owner, Erin uses that experience, along with her MBA education, to help her clients reach heights they never dreamed possible. Tune into the full conversation for more on the typical mistakes small business owners make when they're trying to sell their services, how to lead with value, why she starts every morning with LL Cool J (sort of), and a lot more. Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn: More about what Erin does, and why one-size-fits-all tactics don't work for business development Why it's easier to sell a tactic than a strategy — and why that's not working for businesses who are wanting to grow Why Erin says this era is the opportunity small businesses have been waiting for What the “horror” is that Erin realized when she left the corporate world — and why that realization can be such a shock to the system for entrepreneurs The lessons that former C-suiters should take into their entrepreneurship journeys How corporate teaches people to be risk averse — and why that mindset doesn't always serve small business owners well Why there needs to be a “faster pace of failure” in small businesses Why telling people “what” to do isn't enough — and why value comes in explaining “how” to do it The pieces that cause your mental acuity to “leak” and why that informs the habits that Erin has integrated into her life Why Erin “setting her stage” at 5:30 in the morning involves coffee, dogs, senseless violence, and LL Cool J Why Erin's litmus test every day is “Am I being a goat today?” Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Conquer Your Business website Erin Marcus on LinkedIn Erin Marcus on Instagram “You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth” by Jen Sincero Buy a copy of “Lost at CEO: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Strategy” by Carl J. Vivian welcomes Riley Brain to Hempresent to discuss Riley's business, Wandering Bud. Riley had a background in music education and was feeling unfulfilled in her teaching career, so in 2016 she decided to create her own business offering unique and fashionable cannabis smoking paraphernalia. She wanted a product that could look naturally displayed among her art objects in her home, which is why she chose ceramic as the material to make her pipes, bongs, and accessories. Ceramic is opaque and easy to clean, and Riley found a second-hand kiln to use for the process. She has been successful in the industry, with her fans ranging from cannabis connoisseurs and home decor aficionados to those simply curious or seeking aesthetic inspiration.Riley and her team of seven women artists design a specialized selection of cannabis-related merchandise as part of their commitment to building an equitable community. To support equity, Riley's team hires people of color, collaborates with black and brown artists, contracts with other workers, and donates to two organizations each month. One is local, Kansas City Gift, which provides grants to black-owned businesses on the city's east side. The other is Broccoli Magazine's Floric Coalition, which donates to different equity-oriented organizations. Having a studio based on Truce Avenue, a historic racial dividing line in Kansas City, is a constant reminder of the need to give back to the community.Riley Brain of Wandering Bud is a female canopreneur who is optimistic about the progress being made in the cannabis industry. She discussed the challenges faced by women in the industry, particularly the “grass ceiling” which is an extension of the glass ceiling idea. Riley also commented on the incident at MJ BIZCON where a group of men was wearing t-shirts that said “buy weed from rich white men”, which was met with backlash from the community. Riley then discussed her product line of unique cannabis smoking pieces and accessories, which are available on her website and at various retailers.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
