California Hall of Fame 2022 class. Sac City Unified's fentanyl warning. New majority women Sacramento City Council. Peter Petty's “Hepcat's Holla'Daze Swingin' Yuletide Revue” returns to The Sofia, Home of B Street Theatre. California Hall of Fame Amanda Meeker, Executive Director of the California Museum, joins us to discuss the latest class of California Hall of Fame. This year's inductees include actor and singer-songwriter Lynda Carter, ice skater Peggy Fleming, and soccer player Megan Rapinoe. Meeker also shares details of the museum's latest exhibits. SCUSD fentanyl warning Zach Didier was a 17-year-old senior at Rocklin's Whitney High School with dreams of attending UCLA. Although Zach was accepted, he would never step foot on campus. The teen's life was tragically cut short by Fentanyl poisoning just days after Christmas in 2020. Zach was just one of the more than 10,000 Californians who died from drug-related overdoses from October 2020 to September 2021, with Fentanyl accounting for more than half of those deaths, according to the state. Since then, the opioid crisis has only worsened. In Sacramento County alone, over 800 people were hospitalized for opioid overdoses in 2021 and claimed the lives of 174 others. In October, we spoke with the Sacramento City Unified School District about its plans to distribute a potentially life-saving drug to prevent poisoning and overdoses on all of its campuses. CapRadio Sacramento Education Reporter Srishti Prabha joined us to provide an update on that effort and how Zach Didier's family and others are sharing their stories. Sacramento's majority women city council For the first time in 30 years, Sacramento has a women-majority city council. Three of whom are new faces and will be sworn in Tuesday night. CapRadio Sacramento Government Reporter Kristin Lam joins us with an introduction to the new face of the city council as well as a refresher on what these “hyper-local” elected officials do. Hepcat's Holla'Daze Holiday music and gatherings are a highly anticipated tradition for some, while others may be done hearing the same songs and may dread the return of holiday parties. If the latter is you, there is a scintillating party in Sacramento to shake up the holiday season. Hepcat's Holla'Daze Swingin Yuletide Revue is making a roaring return this weekend at The Sofia, Home of B Street in Sacramento. It's a holiday tradition like no other, with music that promises to transport you back to the height of the "Swing Era." At the center of it all is Band leader and Master of Ceremonies Peter Petty, along with his Jazz orchestra the "Mercenaries of Merry." The ringleader of this swingin' Christmas celebration joined Insight to provide a preview of the celebration.

Advice that begins with the simple words of wisdom passed down from Anne’s father—also a writer—in the iconic passage that gives the book its title. An essential volume for generations of writers young and old, Bird by Bird is a modern classic. Source: amazon.com About the Author Anne Lamott is the New York Times bestselling author of Help, Thanks, Wow; Small Victories; Stitches; Some Assembly Required; Grace (Eventually); Plan B; Traveling Mercies; Bird by Bird; Operating Instructions, and the forthcoming Hallelujah Anyway. She is also the author of several novels, including Imperfect Birds and Rosie. A past recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and an inductee to the California Hall of Fame, she lives in Northern California. Get your copy of Archley's beautiful book journal, the Book of Books here: https://www.archleys.com/?ref=JamVyS-U4mVR BIG IDEA 1 (3:46) – Bird by bird, buddy This book was inspired by Anne’s father who helped her brother who had months to do an essay project at school about birds but inevitably left it to the last minute. Overwhelmed by the size of the task and the short amount of time left, her dad told her brother “Just take it bird by bird buddy, bird by bird”. However big the challenge is you just have to break it down, take it bird by bird and just get through. She said that in the context of writing, no writer she knows sits down feeling enthusiastic and confident but they do it – word by word, page by page. Anne said there’s treasure in the piles of chaos and mess, and we need to make that mess to find out who we are. She also said that nobody is reading your first draft or nobody needs to read it. So if you’re putting pressure on yourself to show your first draft (on social media / to friends or family), you’ll find it too overwhelming – keep it for yourself. On the topic of writer’s block she argues that you actually are not blocked but empty. So you need to fill yourself back up. It’s all about the process. Sit down at your desk and tackle your book, essay or anything, bird by bird. BIG IDEAS 2 (7:19) – Write to tell the truth Anne always encourages her students in writing classes to start with their childhood and write anything and everything they remember. The Christmas celebration where your Uncle got drunk, the dress that your Grandma used to wear, the smell of cooking coming through the door, everything you remember. Write it down. Anne says that you need to write as people talk. And to do this well, you need to go out and listen to people really talking. In your mind, think how you would write that conversation as narrative so it sounds like people really talking. By helping your characters create their own narrative, you find things out about your characters as you go along. The point of good writing is to create real characters with hopes and dreams. As a writer, you need to think as a writer and constantly observe and listen – you need to write the true representation of people. Observing and listening and capturing can be anything – from a snippet of a one-sided conversation when someone walks past you whilst on the phone, or the colour of someone’s hat at the supermarket. BIG IDEA 3 (10:11) – Be weird This book is full of irreverence, neurosis, quirks, hypochondria and general human weirdness. Anne gives voice to the weird things that we all say, feel, think and do but don’t always show or tell anyone. Because if something inside you is real, someone will probably find it interesting. This book is a perfect example of writing as a person that you really are not the person that you think you should be to write a book. This is very relevant to non-fiction writing where it’s likely easy to slip into the idea of who you ‘should’ be to be a non-fiction author, rather than writing from who you are. Can cancer be funny? Author Mary Ladd and illustrator Don Asmussen certainly think so. The pair, both of whom have fought (and are fighting) cancer diagnoses, join the Alta podcast to laugh in the face of deadly disease and discuss their book, “The Wig Diaries.” Ladd wrote about the California Hall of Fame for Alta earlier this year and is a member of the Writer’s Grotto. Asmussen is the creator of Bad Reporter, a twice-weekly political comic strip in the San Francisco Chronicle. Penned by Ladd with illustrations by Asmussen, “The Wig Diaries” bears witness to the blunt horror —and the hilarious jokes —provided by this all too common illness.
While Tony Hawk, Brandi Chastain and RuPaul might be great picks By the governor and his partner, There is one person who is not in, that should have been put in a decade ago. And he is a "Gold" lock for a spot in Sacramento... a town he likely has been to 5 times as much as any of this year's inductees.

“Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship” was presented on April 30, 2019, by Gregory Boyle; founder of Homeboy Industries and best-selling author. Gregory Boyle is the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, California, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the world. A Jesuit priest, from 1986 to 1992 Father Boyle served as pastor of Dolores Mission Church, then the poorest Catholic parish in Los Angeles that also had the highest concentration of gang activity in the city. Father Boyle witnessed the devastating impact of gang violence on his community during the so-called “decade of death” that began in Los Angeles in the late 1980s and peaked at 1,000 gang-related killings in 1992. In the face of law enforcement tactics and criminal justice policies of suppression and mass incarceration as the means to end gang violence, Father Boyle and parish and community members adopted what was a radical approach at the time: treat gang members as human beings. In this presentation, Gregory Boyle will share how compassion, kindness, and kinship are the tools to fight despair and decrease marginalization. Through his stories and parables, all will be reminded that no life is less valuable than another. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about substance use disorders, recovery, family and related issues. The Education Series is organized by Dawn Farm, a non-profit community of programs providing a continuum of substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services. In 1988 they started what would eventually become Homeboy Industries, which employs and trains former gang members in a range of social enterprises, as well as provides critical services to thousands of men and women who walk through its doors every year seeking a better life. Father Boyle is the author of the 2010 New York Times-bestseller Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion. His 2017 book is the Los Angeles Times-bestseller Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship. He has received the California Peace Prize and been inducted into the California Hall of Fame. Hey guys - Welcome to Episode 20 of The Daily Cordial! Today we are talking to, the ultimate champion of the underdog, Reverend Greg Boyle. Father Boyle is a pastor, activist & renowned speaker. He is also the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, which is the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world. His list of accolades goes on and on but to name a few…He is the author of the New York Times-bestselling book - Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, which was named one of the Best Books of 2010 by Publishers Weekly. He was the subject of Academy Award winner Freida Lee Mock’s documentary, G-Dog. He received the California Peace Prize and was inducted into the California Hall of Fame. In 2014, the White House named Father Boyle a Champion of Change and in 2016 he received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the James Beard Foundation, and this is just to name a few! I was first exposed to Father Boyle through my friends Andrew & Lydia… who highly recommended his book “Tattoos on the Heart” which is a series of parables from his two decades working with gang members in LA. I read it and knew immediately I needed to find a way to talk to this guy… his message, his journey and his stories were SO inspirational and talking to him was no different.. But before we get to our talk… first a little background on how “Homeboy Industries” came to be… In 1986 Father Boyle was appointed pastor of Dolores Mission Church in LA, which at the time was the poorest Catholic parish in the city located between two large public housing projects with the highest concentration of gang activity in Los Angeles. After having buried an ever growing number of young people killed in gang violence, Father Boyle wanted to address the unmet needs of gang-involved youth by developing positive opportunities for them. In 1992 Father Boyle launched Homeboy Bakery, and ever since, former enemy gang members have worked side by side, learning both business and baking skills together. The success of Homeboy Bakery created the groundwork for a variety of other similar social enterprises under Homeboy Industries. Each year over 10,000 former gang members from across Los Angeles come through Homeboy Industries’ doors in an effort to make a positive change. Homeboy Industries offers education, therapy, tattoo removal, substance abuse treatment, legal assistance, and job placement services. Father Boyle is a man who has dedicated his life to helping those in need and more than that he seeks to help people whom most of society has given up on. In a recent open letter he wrote - “Homeboy Industries seeks to be what the world is ultimately invited to become: a community of kinship, exquisite mutuality, and tenderness. We stand against forgetting that we belong to each other.” And I think THIS is a message we all need to be reminded of right now. We belong to each other. In today’s episode we talk about the power of unconditional love, compassion and kinship. And his belief that every human is inherently good. He tells us: what he believes we are all longing for what’s more powerful than death advice for those grieving what he believes to be the meaning of life and much much more… If you’re a parent or you’re in a service profession where you’re trying to help others I think this will be a really valuable episode for you. Actually I think if you’re a human being than this episode applies to you. :) Enjoy the show!
