For this episode, we're going back to a familiar villain from podcast-past because  unfortunately, healthcare villains have a habit of staying relevant. This is a guy who made his fame by cozying up to Oprah while schilling diet pills, supplements, and medical conspiracy theories – it's Doctor Oz, who is now Trump's nominee for Director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. That's right, the man who has previously claimed that there are deadly levels of arsenic in apple juice, that most olive oil is fake, that “Reparative Therapy” can cure homosexuality, and that hydroxychloroquine cures COVID, is pretty close to running our largest public health systems. Today I'm talking with Dr. Diljeet Singh of Physicians for a National Health program about what that means for you and the country at large, and how we can do something about it!  NOTE: At the Medicare for All Podcast, we've had a brief, unplanned hiatus due to pesky technical issues – and the fact that Trump is keeping us busy in our organizing work – but we are very excited to be back! I'm flying solo right now while my regular cohost Ben is saving the environment at his 9 to 5 organizing job, but that feels like important work as well, so we're going to give him a pass and send him our love! https://www.youtube.com/live/3ZUE4sOTI_g?si=WGg97KnP-UxktIsu Our guest for this episode was the brilliant Dr. Diljeet Singh! She's a women's health advocate, an integrative gynecologic oncologist, and the President of Physicians for a National Health Program. Dr. Singh received her medical degree from Northwestern University and her master's degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed an obstetrics and gynecology residency at Johns Hopkins and a gynecologic oncology fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. She completed her doctoral degree in public health on cost analysis at the University of Texas School of Public Health and an associate fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Singh and our friends at Physicians for a National Health Program are going all out to let folks know about the serious danger Dr. Oz poses to our national health! Andy Wells returns to the podcast with an update on his popular book, Tried to be Straight. The first two-part interview with Andy has been one of the most popular BWM episodes to date. In that episode, Andy shares his journey growing up in church (All Saints Episcopal Church and Lake Avenue Congregational Church both in Pasadena, CA) where he served in leadership roles - and on to college and graduate school where he earned a Master of Arts in Christian Apologetics at Biola University. After struggling for decades with his identity - including association with the now defunct Exodus International and “reparative therapy” -  he tells his “coming out” story. Andy remains a committed Christian and dedicated student and teacher of the Bible. Today's episode gets us current. Because of his book, Andy has counseled countless others in the LGBTQ+ community who struggle with their own identity, parents whose children have “come out,” and Christians who maintain a moral objection to non-hetero sexuality but want to maintain a positive relationship with everyone. Andy has been invited to speak and share his book with groups who have shared their appreciation and help. Andy endorses high-impact groups like Free Mom Hugs and Real Momma Bears. He shares his new book project designed to give language that builds bridges rather than walls. This is an important interview you will not want to miss - and then share it with your friends. While we work on our next series, we thought we'd take the opportunity to highlight a couple of episodes from the vault. We talk about how silence has made it hard for people to feel safe and understood; how churches have sometimes created cultures of shame; and we discuss the damaging legacy of conversion therapy. In the second half, we push back on the claim that the pattern for sexuality laid out in the Bible is harmful, and we share our own experiences of the Christian sexual ethic as life-giving. Political Malpractice & the Rise of Dr. Oz

Medicare for All

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 2, 2022

Today we're checking in on the ongoing Pennsylvania Senate race, where Medicare for All–along with crudites, poop tweets, hydroxychloroquine, and Turkish nationalism–has become a hot-button issue. This race is beyond interesting, shading into the bizarre! A lot is at stake, since control over the Senate is going to be hotly contested this midterm election, and this is the most likely seat to flip from Republican to Democrat. https://youtu.be/nRyxrm0I95c Show Notes The Democratic candidate Lieutenant Gov. John Fetterman is running against none other than Dr. Mehmet Oz, the instantly recognizable daytime talkshow host from Oprah and the Dr. Oz Show. Oz is the Trump-endorsed candidate for the GOP, and he's been producing attack ads going after Fetterman's alleged support for “socialized medicine,” but when we dug deep into Oz's own healthcare plan, we came to some verrrrry interesting and uncomfortable conclusions! The U.S. Senate is currently split exactly 50-50, with Democrats having the tie-breaking vote of Vice President Kamala Harris. This has ruined just about everything, since it let Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema hold the country hostage. So any contested Senate seat is a potential big deal right now. Initially, the race was seen as something of a toss-up. BUT THEN, in a surprise move, Donald Trump endorsed Dr. Oz in the Republican primary, giving him the oomph to beat hedge fund exec Dave McCormick. (Surprising because  McCormick's campaign had many former Trump aides, including Hope Hicks.) As of this podcast, every single poll shows Fetterman with a sizable lead in the race, a lead that keeps growing: anywhere between 5% and 18%. So the stakes are high in this race, but we also care because these two candidates have been going after each other's healthcare platforms… which after taking a very close look, are actually not that far apart. The Dr. Oz Show provides general health and lifestyle advice, including promoting products to support your health. BUT, his advice is very bad as it turns out: A team of medical researchers at the University of Alberta in 2014 analyzed how many of the recommendations on the Dr. Oz Show were supported by evidence: it turns out, less than half! “evidence supported 46%, contradicted 15%, and was not found for 39%” That same year (2014), Dr. Oz was called to testify before a Senate hearing looking at false and deceptive advertising for weight-loss products. When he was called out by Sen. Claire McKaskill for promoting fake weight loss cures, he candidly replied: "I actually do personally believe in the items I talk about on the show. I passionately study them. I recognize they don't have the scientific muster to present as fact but nevertheless I would give my audience the advice I give my family all the time and I have given my family these products. Specifically the ones you mentioned, then I'm comfortable with that part.” In addition to diet pills, he's promoted a lot of wild shit over the years: the idea that there are deadly levels of Arsenic in apple juice, the claim that most olive oil is fake, the concept of “Reparative Therapy” (to "repair" LGBTQ+ people). Dr. Oz has reportedly been eyeballing a political career since as far back as 2009. Dr. Oz first jumped into politics when he became enmeshed with the Trump campaign, and then the Trump administration. His greatest contribution, as far as we can tell, is that he played a major role pushing the Trump administration to grant emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine, the fake and dangerous treatment for COVID. And, very unfortunately, he was successful! The FDA granted a controversial emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine. Just 3 months later, the FDA was forced to reverse its authorization decision, after multiple studies showed the drug was ineffective and potentially harmful to COVID patients. The Trump administration still mounted a campaign to get hyd...

My friend Justin Traasdahl (Ukraine RM, BYU Grad) joins us to bravely share his story. Justin starts with opening up at age 13 to his parents about possibly being gay which led to a long and painful road with conversion therapy that lasted around 15 years. Justin's hope in sharing his story helps “change hearts and trajectories”. Around age 29, Justin went to a new LDS therapist who told him “Justin, you know reparative therapy doesn't work, right?” Justin shares questioning conversion therapy along the way —that this is who he is—but needed to hear this from a different therapist. Justin shares the pain, trauma and betrayal of conversion/reparative therapy and his road to healing and hope. It is a remarkable story of courage. One of the reasons Justin agreed to do this podcast is to help younger queer youth and parents avoid this type of therapy which is still legal in some states. Justin, who is no longer an active Latter-day Saint, talks about his hope for the future that includes sharing his life with his future husband. In a closing segment Justin talks to his 13-year-old self using language very different than conversion therapy. It is a beautiful segment on how I feel our Heavenly Parents see all Their children. Thank you, Justin, for being on the podcast. Sharing your story helps us all do better, and you are “changing hearts and trajectories”. You are a great man and have a wonderful life ahead of you.

Oh, and you can find out what we've all been enjoying on TV recently.Resources mentionedIsn't the Christian Sexual Ethic Harmful and Repressive? Andy tells about his experience in leadership at a large evangelical church which led to "conversion" or "reparative therapy," and then his "coming out." The Exodus Movement is shut down. He talks about liberal  Christianity, but theologically, he remains a conservative. Andy's new church, St. Gregory's of Nyssa in San Francisco brought renewal, hope and a supportive community. Florence Ashley, “Reparative Therapy” in Abbie Goldberg & Genny Beemyn (eds), The Sage Encyclopedia of Trans Studies, vol. 2 (Thousands Oakes, CA: SAGE Publications, 2021) 713–717 Trans reparative therapy is an umbrella term for sustained efforts that seek to discourage behaviors associated with a gender other than the one assigned at birth and/or promote gender identities that are aligned with the person's gender assigned at birth. It is predicated on the view that being transgender or markedly gender nonconforming is pathological and that transitioning should be avoided if at all possible. Reparative therapies are known by many names: conversion therapy, reparative practices, the corrective approach, the psychotherapeutic approach, and the pathology response approach. Different terms highlight different aspects and subtypes of reparative therapy. This entry addresses the practices' current social context, the differences and similarities between reparative therapy targeting sexual orientation versus gender identity, the defining features of contemporary approaches, the practices' harmfulness and unethicality, and the legal regulation of reparative therapy. In this series, the Fade to Gray team strives to listen, engage and understand the motives behind such efforts and the impact it has had (whether that be positive or negative). It's 2020 after all. It's time we asked the questions and allowed people to share their real experience. This stuff has had a real impact on people's lives and it's time we talked about it.  Let us introduce you to Darren Calhoun. Darren has been known to describe himself as gay, Black, and Christian. However, he is also a lot of other things such as a speaker, musician, photographer, writer, activist and conversation-starter. He grew up in Chicago and came out as gay at age 17. Not long after, he found himself surrounded by Christians who insisted that being gay wasn’t God’s plan for his life. He then spent the next eight years trying to renounce homosexuality and become heterosexual. Time is spent discussing the years of spiritual abuse that followed and explored the lasting impact this has had. While there is trauma, there is also one vital component that is present throughout and that's resiliency.  To learn more about Darren and get involved, check out http://darrencalhoun.com. FYI. "What are some of the most extreme forms of intolerance?" "What happens at a conversion therapy camp?" "Is that still allowed?" "How do you survive?" "How do you continue surviving?"On this episode, I interview my dear friend, talented lighting designer, and overall wonderful human being, Justice (they/them, he/him) where we discuss their experience of going to a "restorative therapy camp" (also known as a conversion therapy camp), as well as the lasting effects this can have on a Queer person. Justice--like the experience of many Queer people--was born into a heavily Christian and Texan family who believed that loving someone of the same-sex was a mental illness that could be fixed through "proper treatment." It was after their mom discovered their internet browser history and what they had been looking at that they were awakened in the middle of the night and forced to go somewhere where they had no knowledge of the horrors they would endure. This unfortunate narrative is common for many Queer people and a very real part of Queer history. It was in 1973 that homosexuality was deemed not a mental illness or sickness by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). However, Queer people and allies are still fighting to this day for this to actually be a reality. Twenty-Nine states still have no laws that ban conversion therapy; qualified transgender Americans are banned from serving in the military; and it wasn't until recently that Title VII included discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identification. In listening to this episode, I, Justice, and countless other Queer people who face discrimination hope you not only love and nurture Queer people but actively work to protect us and our rights as well.Follow Justice:Website: https://www.justinbeets.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/beets_me/National Center For Lesbian Rights Born Perfect campaign:Learn: --Born Perfect: http://www.nclrights.org/our-work/born-perfect/ --NCLR: http://www.nclrights.orgDonate: https://secure2.convio.net/ncflr/site/Donation2;jsessionid=00000000.app217b?4020.donation=form1&df_id=4020&mfc_pref=TResources for further learning:Watch Boy Erased: https://www.amazon.com/Boy-Erased-Lucas-Hedges/dp/B07JZDBMS9"When Gay Was Not Okay with the APA: A Historical Overview of Homosexuality and its Status as Mental Disorder": https://cedar.wwu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1001&context=orwwu"The Lies and Dangers of Reparative Therapy": https://www.hrc.org/resources/the-lies-and-dangers-of-reparative-therapy"Frequently Ask Questions on the Transgender Military Ban": https://notransmilitaryban.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Transgender-Military-Ban-FAQ-Updated-9.18.19.pdfJoin The Trevor Project to End Conversion Therapy: https://p2a.co/rQaDTzkShow Produced by Nick EiblerEdited by Addison McKissackTheme Song written by Matt Gregory, Colin Egan, and Mike Hubbard Produced by Colin Egan and Mike HubbardLogo Design by David Pavón

Matheson came to renounce that type of treatment and instead focused on therapies intended to reduce, in his words, the “shame, anxiety and effects of trauma” experienced by LGBTQ individuals in society. Now, Matheson is divorced and making news by coming out as a gay man seeking a male partner. He also is expressing remorse for the pain he may have brought to men he was trying to help along the way. But last Friday, Low quashed his own legislation after meeting with Christian leaders who had expressed concerns about how the bill might affect their ability to minister to those in the LGBT community. “Some would say this is crazy,” Low, who is gay and the chairman of the legislative LGBTQ caucus, told The Los Angeles Times. “Why would you pause when you don’t need to, when you’re in the driver’s seat?” One answer was Low’s relationship with Kevin Mannoia, the former president of the National Association of Evangelicals and a leader in the Free Methodist Church. Over the course of the summer, Mannoia met with and developed a relationship with Low. Last week, Mannoia wrote an op-ed for The Orange County Register expressing his opposition to the bill—and to reparative therapy. Low dropped the bill the next day. In his years working as an evangelical leader, Mannoia has learned to build relationships with those with whom he may disagree. So what does it take? “Being willing to commit to them as people … and what we believe to be right and appropriate in reflecting Christ well,” said Mannoia. “Not primarily driven by the political agenda, nor even the possibility that we may be used or manipulated, but simply doing what is right because it’s right.” Mannoia joined Morgan Lee, associate digital media producer, and Richard Clark, director of editorial development for SmallGroups.com and PreachingToday.com, to discuss how this story unfolded and what it says about the future of relationships between evangelicals and the LGBT community in one of the country’s most progressive states.

Plus, we are excited to talk to author Rick Karatas about his new book Rainbow Relatives. Rainbow Relatives is an entertaining guide for parents, uncles, aunts, teachers and other trusted adults to find the language and methods to discuss with children (ages 3 to 16). It's a lighthearted and inspiring book, not a scientific one. Rick collected real, humorous, and heartwarming stories to help answer questions children may have on various topics about LGBT people and families. The book will help answer questions like: “How come Uncle Bill doesn't have a girlfriend?” Do Aunt Lucy and Doreen sleep in the same bed? “How can both those guys be Cindy's dads?” Film maker, Del Shores, (Sordid Lives) speaks of raising two daughters as a gay dad. Bruce Vilanch (Hollywood Squares) talks about being “Godfather” to 40 kids”. Country singer Chely Wright speaks about some of the battles still being fought. Another woman recalls how she explained to her children their father is gay. This is a recording of my interview with Alex Cooper recorded on March 16, 2016 at Velour in Provo, Utah.  Alex Cooper, along with Dr. Joanna Brooks, are the co-authors of the new book Saving Alex.  Alex was accompanied in this interview by her attorney, Paul Burke.  We were also honored to have Tyler Glenn (Neon Trees) perform three musical numbers for us on this special night.  Audio/video from this interview can be found below. A description of the book follows: When Alex Cooper was fifteen years old, life was pretty ordinary in her sleepy suburban town and nice Mormon family. At church and at home, Alex was taught that God had a plan for everyone. But something was gnawing at her that made her feel different. These feelings exploded when she met Yvette, a girl who made Alex feel alive in a new way, and with whom Alex would quickly fall in love. Alex knew she was holding a secret that could shatter her family, her church community, and her life. Yet when this secret couldn’t be hidden any longer, she told her parents that she was gay, and the nightmare began. She was driven from her home in Southern California to Utah, where, against her will, her parents handed her over to fellow Mormons who promised to save Alex from her homosexuality. For eight harrowing months, Alex was held captive in an unlicensed “residential treatment program” modeled on the many “therapeutic” boot camps scattered across Utah. Alex was physically and verbally abused, and many days she was forced to stand facing a wall wearing a heavy backpack full of rocks. Her captors used faith to punish and terrorize her. With the help of a dedicated legal team in Salt Lake City, Alex eventually escaped and made legal history in Utah by winning the right to live under the law’s protection as an openly gay teenager. Alex is not alone; the headlines continue to splash stories about gay conversion therapy and rehabilitation centers that promise to “save” teenagers from their sexuality. Saving Alex is a courageous memoir that tells Alex’s story in the hopes that it will bring awareness and justice to this important issue. A bold, inspiring story of one girl’s fight for freedom, acceptance, and truth.
