In an era marked by division and rising mental health challenges, Fr. Greg Boyle's voice is one we need to hear now more than ever. On this episode of the Cracking Open podcast, I am honored to speak with Fr. Boyle, a man whose work, books, and mission have inspired me for years.Father Gregory Boyle is a Jesuit priest and founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the world's largest gang intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Fr. Boyle served as pastor of Dolores Mission Church in Boyle Heights from 1986 to 1992. Dolores Mission was the poorest Catholic parish in Los Angeles and had the highest concentration of gang activity in the city.  He had a front-row seat to the devastating impact of gang violence on his community during the so-called “decade of death” that began in the late 1980s, peaking at 1,000 gang-related killings in 1992.  Law enforcement deployed harsh police tactics and the criminal justice system rolled out policies of suppression and mass incarceration as the primary response to the increased gang violence. But where others saw only criminals, Father Boyle saw people in need of help. So his parish and community members decided to implement a radically different approach – to treat gang members as human beings.  In 1988 they started what would eventually become Homeboy Industries, which employs and trains former gang members in a range of social enterprises, as well as provides critical services to thousands of individuals who walk through its doors every year seeking a better life. Whether joining their 18-month employment and re-entry program or seeking discreet services such as tattoo removal or substance abuse resources, their clients are embraced by a community of kinship and offered a variety of free wraparound services to facilitate healing and growth. In this episode, we discuss Fr. Boyle's journey to becoming a priest, the development of Homeboy Industries, and his core principles: “Everybody's unshakably good, no exceptions,” and “We belong to each other, no exceptions.”  We also explore the teachings of Jesus, and what Fr. Greg shares is the “marrow of the gospel” emphasizing inclusion, nonviolence, unconditional kindness, and compassion.Fr. Peter Petty's “Hepcat's Holla'Daze Swingin' Yuletide Revue” returns to The Sofia, Home of B Street Theatre.    California Hall of Fame Amanda Meeker, Executive Director of the California Museum, joins us to discuss the latest class of California Hall of Fame. This year's inductees include actor and singer-songwriter Lynda Carter, ice skater Peggy Fleming, and soccer player Megan Rapinoe. Meeker also shares details of the museum's latest exhibits. SCUSD fentanyl warning Zach Didier was a 17-year-old senior at Rocklin's Whitney High School with dreams of attending UCLA. Although Zach was accepted, he would never step foot on campus. The teen's life was tragically cut short by Fentanyl poisoning just days after Christmas in 2020. Zach was just one of the more than 10,000 Californians who died from drug-related overdoses from October 2020 to September 2021, with Fentanyl accounting for more than half of those deaths, according to the state. Since then, the opioid crisis has only worsened. In Sacramento County alone, over 800 people were hospitalized for opioid overdoses in 2021 and claimed the lives of 174 others. In October, we spoke with the Sacramento City Unified School District about its plans to distribute a potentially life-saving drug to prevent poisoning and overdoses on all of its campuses. CapRadio Sacramento Education Reporter Srishti Prabha joined us to provide an update on that effort and how Zach Didier's family and others are sharing their stories.  Sacramento's majority women city council For the first time in 30 years, Sacramento has a women-majority city council. To create lasting improvements in mentorship, it's necessary for institutions to develop a culture that supports and values effective mentoring. This is applicable, not only for college and universities, but for STEMM workplaces. Astronaut and engineer Dr. Ellen Ochoa was the first Hispanic woman to go to space. When she first joined NASA, Dr. Ochoa discovered a culture that recognized the value of effective mentoring for everyone in the space shuttle program. In this episode, Dr. Ochoa shares her story of how this culture of mentorship impacted her career, what she did to develop formal mentoring programs in NASA, and how professionals can be guided further when workplaces value and implement effective mentoring practices and tools like compacts. Dr. Ellen Ochoa is a distinguished astronaut and research engineer. She earned her PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Ochoa was the first Hispanic woman to go to space and served as the director for NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston from 2013 to her retirement in 2018. She has been inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame, the California Hall of Fame, and the International Air & Space Hall of Fame.
