"Often, when someone dies, we feel a combination of love and something else, and this, too, is holy. And entirely human. And they don't cancel each other out. Love and anger. Love and disappointment. Love and emptiness. We always love imperfectly. It is the nature of human love. And it is okay. But despite all the love in the world, when it comes down to it, none of us can know the reality of another." This week, Scott was joined by Natalie Orpett, Anna Bower, and Matt Gluck to talk over some of the week's big national security news, including:“Some Assembly Required.” On Tuesday, President Biden gave his fourth and final speech as president to the U.N. General Assembly. He used the occasion to reflect on the many foreign policy decisions of his presidency, including the withdrawal from Afghanistan, opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the (thus far unsuccessful) pursuit of a ceasefire in the conflict in Gaza. What does this speech—and the year's U.N. General Assembly more broadly—tell us about the state of his foreign policy legacy?“Keeping it Peachy.” Georgia's state election board is in the news for rules changes that some allege could delay finalization of the 2024 election results, opening a possible door for Congress to manipulate the results. But what will these rules changes really mean? And what does it tell us about the potential for (and limits on) efforts to manipulate the outcome of the 2024 presidential election?“Memo-ries of the Way We Were.” Last week, the New York Times published excerpts from several memoranda prepared by then-President Trump's White House Counsel addressing questions he appears to have posed regarding his ability to direct the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute individuals. Given Trump's repeated pledges of vengeance if he were to return to the White House, what do these memoranda tell us about what he might be able to accomplish? And what obstacles may lie in his way, particularly in light of the Supreme Court's intervening decision on presidential immunity? For object lessons, Natalie recommended Helen Phillips' new novel “Hum.” Anna stole Scott's object lesson and recommended season two of Rings of Power along with season three of Industry. Scott sang the praises of the best tiny speaker he ever did see (er, hear). And Matt Gluck dug into the sportsball file to urge listeners to begin following the Detroit Tigers' historic playoffs run.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast. Sam Lamott is an artist, writer, and host of the How To Human podcast, which explores how to acquire the psychological skills needed to thrive as an adult. How To Human was featured on Itunes New and Noteworthy as well as Apple's top 200 podcasts in both Health and Self Help. Sam is also owner of Square 1 Studio in San Anselmo California and founder of Hello Humans, a platform for storytellers to share their trials and capture the truth of what it means to be human. He is also co-author of the New York Times bestseller, Some Assembly Required. Sam describes himself as a single dad, college drop-out, and ex-meth head, who, at the age of twenty two, came out of a ten-year bender with severe clinical depression, a two-year-old child, and zero life skills. He knows that life is more than what we show the world on social media, that it's often much messier, but that the lessons learned from those messes are as valuable as anything on this adventure and creation of being human. Additionally, in the time we at Cutting For Sign have known and and collaborated with Sam, he has proven to be dogged in his commitment to both self betterment and the projects that have captured him. He's become a friend, someone we can call for personal or professional support, and a fierce advocate for the transformation of the primordial energies we find ourselves steeped within, into the woven gold we call story. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cutting-for-sign/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cutting-for-sign/support
