This video is part of the Journey to Diagnosis series, produced by Being Patient with support provided by Eli Lilly. Learn more about Journey to Diagnosis: https://www.beingpatient.com/journey-to-diagnosis/ Award-winning playwright and performer Samuel A. Simon joined Being Patient live talks to discuss his experience with Alzheimer's and developing and performing his autobiographical play about his diagnosis journey, “Dementia Man, an Existential Journey.” Before becoming involved in theatre as a playwright and performer, Simon worked as a lawyer for Ralph Nader's first advocacy group. He then spent 25 years as head of a public affairs firm. After he sold his firm, he became involved with theatre, with his first play, “The Actual Dance, Love's Ultimate Journey Through Breast Cancer,” which has toured from 2013 to the present. In 2021, this play was turned into an award-winning biography. In 2018, Simon was diagnosed with mild-cognitive impairment and in 2021 with early-stage Alzheimer's. He used his experience in his previous play to develop “Dementia Man, an Existential Journey.” In the play, he shares his “existential journey” as he navigates diagnosis and living with dementia. He also imagines a future for the millions of others living with the disease and what that would look like. Directed by Thadd McQuade with dramaturgy by Gabrielle Maisels, “Dementia Man, An Existential Journey” made its world premiere at Capital Fringe in Washington D.C. in July 2023 and is the recipient of the 2023 Dementia Arts Impact Award by the Dementia Spring Foundation. He continues to tour performances of the play throughout the United States. Simon lives in Mclean, Virginia, with his wife Susan. They have two children and four grandchildren. He is under medical treatment for Alzheimer's disease and took part in a clinical trial.
Lori La Bey talks with Samuel A. Simon who was diagnosed in 2018 with Mild-Cognitive Impairment and in 2021 with Early-Stage Alzheimer's. Sam's story offers a raw, unfiltered view into the challenges one faces when beginning to lose cognition, including the fear of the unknown; the urgency of the decisions that have to be made; and the tribulations of navigating a broken healthcare system all while balancing the desire to live a full life, a comfortable life, and a life of service to others.” Contact Samuel A. Is Burning Man a “white people thing?” Radical inclusivity is one of Burning Man’s 10 Principles, but is it enough simply to say “all are welcome?” or should the burner community take proactive steps to make people of color feel welcome? JR Nexus Russ (he, him, his) is a black and Filipino-American, queer cisgender man, and in several ethically non-monogamous relationships. Nexus went to Burning Man in 2013, he started a DC Burners storytelling show at Capital Fringe, and was recently named one of the two new Regional Contacts for the DC Burning Man Community. Nexus and I are both musical theater kids so forgive the Pippin preamble. It gets juicy around the 20 minute mark where we go deep into identity, microaggressions and white fragility. These are sensitive topics no matter your identity and I am grateful to Nexus for educating me with generosity and patience. If Burning Man is about experiencing discomfort for the sake of personal growth, what could be more important than holding awareness of our privilege to Burn and dismantling the unconscious biases that limit the experience of others? This week, in honor of Mother's Day, we present two stories about science and moms! Part 1: Marine biologist Jessica Hoey tries to keep her daughter’s belief in mermaids alive. Part 2: Jamie Brickhouse begins to notice some startling changes in his mother's behavior. Jessica Hoey is the director of reef health reporting at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The reef forms part of her being, both in the office and in her personal life. She jumps at any chance to get her kids out on the ocean, from building forts out of drift wood on Lizard island to swimming with reef sharks. With her overactive imagination and Peter Pan attitude she hopes her kids value coral reefs as much as she does. Jamie Brickhouse is performing his award-winning solo show Dangerous When Wet: Booze, Sex, and My Mother based on his critically-acclaimed memoir and directed by Obie Award-winning David Drake at Capital Fringe in DC in July, Minnesota Fringe in Minneapolis in August, and San Francisco Fringe in September. For show dates, visit www.jamiebrickhouse.com and follow Jamie on Instagram and Twitter @jamiebrickhouse. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
