An ending no one could have predicted. In this episode we pick up with Catherine preparing for the fight of her life to defend, not only the sanctity of her marriage, but to protect her adoptive country from the "Scandal of Christendom". We see this Tudor tragedy unfold through her eyes in this dramatic and harrowing conclusion to the incredible life of Catherine of Aragon, Queen of England.Book used for this series is Catherine of Aragon: Henry's Spanish Queen by Giles Tremlett
In part one, Catherine's once ideal marriage to Henry VIII started to sour when she didn't provide a son to inherit the throne. And now that he has a younger girlfriend, Henry is ready to do whatever it takes to replace and erase Catherine – and make Anne his new queen. But two decades on the throne have turned Catherine into a formidable opponent. And she's determined to hold on to her crown – no matter how ugly the fight gets.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We mostly remember Henry VIII's six wives because of their fate at the hands of history's most notorious ex. But there's so much more to them than divorce, death and beheadings. Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was a Spanish princess who grew up believing that being Queen of England was her destiny and God-given right. But getting–and staying–on the throne turns out to be a lot more complicated than she thought. When she isn't able to have a healthy son and heir to the throne, Henry decides her time is up. But Catherine refuses to back down, even when someone new arrives and threatens her place on the throne.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Well, hey nonny NO, you did NOT just create a whole, new religion just because you didn't fancy your wife anymore and the grass was green(sleeves)er on the other side of the fence? That Henry VIII sure has a lot to answer for, including Brexit, in the opinion of this week's incredible guest, comedian and self-confessed romance king, Russell Kane. Yes, this week, we're going all Tudor on your ass, as we get down into the business of KH the 8th and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, who was selfish enough not to provide a male heir to the throne, so frankly, what else did she expect than being flung onto the scrap heap – it wasn't the worst thing Henry ever did to his wife, after all. As always Grainne and Chantal revel in the mess and let's face it, the drama of today's royal family has NOTHING on the escapades of this lot. So, grab your lute, don your ruff, and get this Tudor feast, fit for a king into your ears. Don't forget to join Chantal and Grainne at this year's London Podcast festival on 15th September, with special guest, Christopher Hall! Dr Emma Cahill Marron joins Deb in an intriguing discussion of Catherine of Aragon as you've never imagined her. Catherine, born to be a queen, was also a patron of the arts and culture. Dr Cahill brings Catherine of Aragon alive in the discussion. Dr Cahill Marron is an art and cultural historian. Over the last decade, she has published extensively about the cultural and artistic relations between the Tudor dynasty and the Spanish Monarch. Her study showed that as Queen of England, she was a patron of the arts that played a pivotal role in the introduction of Renaissance and Humanism into the court she presided over. Dr Cahill Marron is currently developing research linking female patrons and women artists in Tudor England that aims to show the continuity in this practice between Queen Catherine and her daughter Queen Mary I. On this day in Tudor history, 8th November 1534, courtier, scholar and literary patron, William Blount, 4th Baron Mountjoy, died at Sutton on the Hill in Derbyshire. He'd had a wonderful court career, helping organise the young Henry VIII's education, serving as Master of the Mint and chamberlain to Queen Catherine of Aragon, and he'd been close friends with the renowned humanist scholar, Erasmus. He'd wanted to be relieved of his position as chamberlain to the queen, though, after she'd been put aside and he'd had to break bad news to her. Find out all about Lord Mountjoy, his career and life, in today's talk from historian Claire Ridgway. Also on this day in Tudor history, 8th November 1528, at Bridewell Palace, King Henry VIII made a rather strange public oration to explain his troubled conscience regarding the lawfulness of his marriage to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. In last year’s video, I shared an extract from the king's speech, in which he praises Catherine of Aragon to the hilt even though he'd proposed to another woman, Anne Boleyn. Find out all about this strange situation! https://youtu.be/QE78TDeh7VU
On this day in Tudor history, 6th November 1501, Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, met her betrothed, Arthur, Prince of Wales, eldest son of King Henry VII, at Dogmersfield in Hampshire. The couple were actually already married by proxy, but had never met, and Catherine had only just arrived in England. Find out more about the lead-up to Catherine of Aragon and Arthur Tudor's meeting on 6th November 1501, including Catherine's journey from Spain to England, how their meeting went and what happened next, in today's talk from Claire Ridgway, author of "On This Day in Tudor History". You can see the video here: https://youtu.be/m3nE0PKnLng Also on this day in Tudor history, Sunday 6th November 1541, Catherine Howard, Henry VIII’s fifth wife, was abandoned by her husband the king at Hampton Court Palace. She would never see him again. On the same day, Queen Catherine was visited by a delegation of king's council members and informed of allegations made against her. What exactly happened on this day in 1541 and what has this to do with Hampton Court Palace's 'Haunted Gallery'? Find out in last year’s video - https://youtu.be/eeQx3R6f0Do
On this day in Tudor history, 7th October 1529, Pope Clement VII wrote to King Henry VIII regarding his quest for an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. It wasn't good news. Catherine of Aragon had won this battle, with the pope deciding that the marriage was valid, but she hadn't won the war. Henry VIII did get the marriage annulled in the end, but the pope didn't do it.But what was going on? Why wouldn't the pope help? What was Henry VIII's argument for an annulment and on what grounds did Catherine appeal?Find out more in today's talk from Claire Ridgway, founder of the Tudor Society. Gascoigne was a gifted poet and was hired in 1575 by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, to provide entertainment for Queen Elizabeth I's visit to Leicester's home, Kenilworth Castle. This was Leicester's last ditch attempt at getting the queen to marry him and he hoped Gascoigne could help him. Find out all about Gascoigne's masque, Zabeta, and what happened at Kenilworth, in last year’s video - https://youtu.be/-AaOpqjmAJY

Chloé Zuel is a singer and performer who has worked as a lead singer across Australia and Internationally including two years at Universal Studios Japan and three months at The Venetian, Macao. She was most recently seen as Anita in West Side Story, and as Sarah in Ragtime. Chloé’s other various credits include the Australian premier production of Beautiful; The Carole King Musical, Hairspray, Legally Blonde the Musical, The Mikado, Les Misérables, Rent, the Australian tour of Little Shop of Horrors and Porgy and Bess. She is currently part of the original Australian cast of SIX the Musical as Catherine of Aragon. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Chloé’s mother had her when she was young, and up until she was 8 years old it was just the two of them. Chloé speaks of her mother with awe and appreciation, as she single handedly supported her early performing arts dreams. She started taking dance classes at age 5, competed regularly in dance competitions, and began singing when she was 12 years old. Chloé calls herself that kid who put all her eggs into one basket - it was always clear in her mind that performing was all she wanted to do. She shares that she used to put on a CD every night and would fall asleep to music. Chloé went on to study and graduate from ED5 International, Australia’s premiere Performing Arts Training Facility, and has been lucky enough to be working steadily ever since. Chloé opens up to us about living with terrible anxiety as a performer. For a little while she wasn’t sure she wanted to continue performing - she forgot why she loved it and why she did it. She says, “When you have anxiety, performing everyday, performing every moment” can be hell. She recalls having panic attacks in the wings during performances of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. As someone who struggles with anxiety, she tells us that she found the audition process for SIX really difficult, as a lot of it required singing, dancing and performing in front of everyone else who was also auditioning. But also shares that from the get go - from auditions - the environment created was always one which was about supporting each other, cheering each other on; about being unique, and appreciating everyone else’s unique qualities. She recalls getting butterflies at their initial launch for SIX, realizing what a special project she was now a part of. And now they are a family. Chloé shares, “There’s a really deep love and respect that we have for each other, and an understanding”. In this episode, we talk about: Her whirlwind journey from West Side Story, into Ragtime, into getting married, back to West Side Story to close it out, and starting SIX rehearsals the next morning Why she and her husband decided to spend this time in Tasmania Why she loves performing, and what she feels she gets from it’s magic Her experience with the other queens on launch day for SIX in Australia How her anxiety has affected her performing Her admiration for the writers of SIX, and why she finds it so clever Her peanut butter addiction Connect with Chloé: IG: @chloezuel Twitter: @chloezuel Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Her other Broadway credits include the revivals of The Color Purple and Aladdin. Adrianna has performed in regional and touring productions of The Wiz, Ragtime, Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story, and The Color Purple Revival Tour. Adrianna was born in California, but was raised in Texas where her family relocated to when she was four years old. She remembers being “that kid” who would go to her room, close the door, put on Aladdin, and “perform Princess Jasmine”. She loved singing, dancing and acting, and by participating in the International Thespian Society in high school, she discovered that she could make a career out of doing all three together. Adrianna earned her B.F.A. in Musical Theatre from the University of Oklahoma, and after graduating spent over 3 years living and performing in Germany and Austria. Adrianna shares that she never really had a desire to go to New York City. She loved traveling, and having the opportunity to perform overseas. But as she was preparing for her next role in Europe after Dirty Dancing, both of her parents became ill. So she made the decision to come back home after three and a half years, to be with and help take care of her family. It was upon returning home that she had the opportunity to audition for The Color Purple - the show that would finally take her to New York City, and eventually, help her find her way to Catherine of Aragon in SIX the Musical. On this day in Tudor history, 9th September 1513, during the reign of King Henry VIII, English and Scottish forces clashed at the bloody Battle of Flodden. Henry VIII was campaigning in France at the time, so Catherine of Aragon was in charge as regent. It was a victory for Catherine and also for Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey, who led the English troops against the Scots on that day. Henry missed this moment of victory. King James IV of Scotland died at the Battle of Flodden, but what happened to his body? In today's talk, Claire Ridgway, founder of the Tudor Society, gives details of the battle, Catherine's role in England's victory, and explains what is thought to have happened to James IV's remains. In today's "on this day" video, Claire Ridgway, founder of the Tudor Society, shares Thomas Cromwell's letter to Catherine's chamberlain on this matter, and also gives Catherine's reaction to it. When Henry VIII married Catherine, she was an auburn-haired beauty in her twenties with a passion she had inherited from her parents, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, the joint-rulers of Spain. This daughter of conquistadors showed the same steel and King Henry was to learn, to his cost, that he had not met a tougher opponent on or off the battlefield when he tried to divorce her.
Henry VIII got around. Let's discuss him and his first three wives, Catherine of Aragon (NOT Aragorn), Anne Boleyn (Dani loves her), and Jane Seymour (NOT Dr. Quinn) We will answer all of your burning questions: How did a small plague lead to Henry being king? How far will one horny dude go to sleep with one sexy lady? (Spoiler: far) How long is appropriate a wait between beheading one wife and becoming betrothed to the next? (Spoiler: apparently not very long)
In our inaugural podcast, Anna tells Amanda all about Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII. We learn that Catherine is one bad mother, and Henry is one terrible father.
Catherine of Aragon was the first wife of Henry VIII. Her marriage lasted 24 years during which the couple struggled and failed to produce a male heir. Catherine was well-educated and steadfast but, in the end, she couldn’t overpower a king who wanted an annulment.
Welcome to Episode 8! Here we will talk about Catalina, or Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Isabella and Ferdinand, the King and Queen of Spain. Betrothed to Arthur, Prince of Wales, from the age of 4, Catherine's fate would involve widowhood after only a few months of marriage and eventual marriage to Arthur's younger brother Henry, the future King of England. Unfortunately, she became victim of Henry VIII's inability to produce a male heir, and her subsequent downfall was inevitable. A fervent Catholic, her refusal to agree to an annulment of their marriage so he could marry Anne Boleyn, eventually led to Henry's break with Rome and the Pope, and the creation of the Church of England.
