Joy is a profound and often elusive element within our lives, as discussed in this enlightening conversation with Raquel Braganza, an empowerment life coach. We delve into the significance of actively seeking joy rather than passively awaiting its arrival. Raquel shares her personal journey, illustrating how joy can be rediscovered through the appreciation of life's small pleasures, even amidst adversity. The dialogue emphasises that joy is not merely the absence of sorrow, but a conscious choice that can coexist with difficult emotions. We explore practical strategies for identifying and nurturing joy, encouraging listeners to engage in a treasure hunt for the moments that ignite their spirits.Takeaways: Joy is often perceived as an external phenomenon, yet it is essential to realise that joy must be actively sought out and cultivated from within ourselves. In moments of hardship, it is crucial to identify and embrace the small joys that can invigorate our spirits and reconnect us to our sense of vitality. Life is not strictly a dichotomy of happiness or sadness; joy can coexist with sorrow, providing us with the resilience to navigate our emotional landscapes. Engaging in sensory experiences, such as enjoying a pleasant aroma or the beauty of nature, can significantly enhance our ability to appreciate joy in our everyday lives. „It's Teatime“ im BRITPOD - England at it's best. -- Ein ALL EARS ON YOU Original Podcast.

In this episode, Dr Amy Saunders and Dr Johanna Strong join Susannah to speak about their Royal Studies Journal Cluster, “Queenship and Cross-Confessional Identity”. The Cluster features in the December issue of the Royal Studies Journal and is available open-access through the RSJ website. Guest Bios:Amy has recently completed a PhD in early modern history and heritage at the University of Winchester, supervised by Dr Ellie Woodacre and Dr Simon Sandall. Her research examines the representation of Stuart royal narratives in modern heritage sites, exploring the reconstructed narratives of James VI & I, Anna of Denmark, Charles I, Henrietta Maria, Charles II, and Catherine of Braganza. Confessional and national identity are central themes in Amy's research and are relevant in both her work on the seventeenth century and the modern heritage sites she examines. Her forthcoming book chapter, “Curating a Conduit: Elizabeth Stuart, Motherhood and National Identity in Heritage Sites”, explores how James and Anna's daughter Elizabeth has been repositioned as the ideal ‘English' royal woman in modern heritage sites in England. Johanna completed her PhD at the University of Winchester under the supervision of Drs Ellie Woodacre and Simon Sandall. Her thesis focused on how narratives of religion, national identity, and gender influenced the creation and perpetuation of Mary I's legacy in the dominant English historical narrative from 1558 until 1660. Her research has been featured on a variety of podcasts and informed Winchester Cathedral's 3-part series on Mary I and Philip II's wedding at the Cathedral. Her first published chapter appeared in Valerie Schutte and Jessica S. Hower's award-winning volume Writing Mary I: History, Historiography, and Fiction and her first monograph is forthcoming. Johanna is the Digital Seminar Series Coordinator for the Royal Studies Network and is the Social Media Coordinator for all things RSN. You can follow Johanna and her research on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and her website.

How did tea become Britain's national drink? Its story begins in China, where it was first popularised during the Han and Tang dynasties - but it first made its mark in London's coffee houses on 30th September, 1658, when it was advertised to the public in a ‘newsbook', marketing the exotic beverage as "an excellent and by all physicians approved China drink". However, British tea importers faced stiff competition from the beer industry, which wasn't thrilled about losing customers to this new sector. Breweries even spread rumours that tea was bad for your health in a bid to retain their market share. Yet, once Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza married Charles II in 1662, the Royal family's much-publicised fondness for a cuppa brought it out of the coffeehouses and into homes, where it became a genteel, domestic drink. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly trace the history of England's infatuation with tea, from Pitt The Younger's association with the ‘tea tax', to shops like Twinings springing up across the country, cementing the drink's place in British society… Further Reading: • ‘Tea' (The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge): https://fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/explore-our-collection/highlights/context/stories-and-histories/tea • ‘The history of tea' (The National Trust): https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/discover/history/the-history-of-tea • ‘Tea: Helen & Olly's Great British Questions' (Answer Me This!, 2010): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8tGlGvn3N0 Love the show? The queen by Charles' side, Catherine of Braganza, is often obscured by this scandalous picture. Speaking to Elinor Evans, Sophie Shorland discusses her new biography detailing the life of the often overlooked consort – from her vital political role in the 17th-century Portuguese struggle for independence to the scandalous power games in the court of the 'Merrie Monarch'. He did it again. The Donald pulled off yet another miracle by taking his (failing) social media platform public. The deal had been in the works for a while and looked DOA last year. But it was revived recently and when it hit the Nasdaq this week it added billions to Trump's net worth and gave him an immediate cash infusion that will likely prevent him having to sell assets to make the (reduced) bond in his civil fraud case. The wealthy in this country truly operate under different rules. The mechanism Trump used to take a losing company public quickly and with relative ease compared to normal IPOs is called a SPAC, or Special Purpose Acquisition Company. SPACs gained a lot of attention a few years back before basically imploding as regulators frowned upon them and investments fizzled. As quickly as they gained prominence, they flamed out and were basically revealed to be scams. But it didn't stop the biggest SCAM artist in the world from packaging up his SCAM social media platform inside a SCAM financial vehicle. God bless 'Murica. rWotD Episode 2478: Head of the Imperial House of Brazil Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Thursday, 15 February 2024 is Head of the Imperial House of Brazil. The Head of the Brazilian Imperial House (Portuguese: Chefe da Casa Imperial do Brasil) is a title used by the leader of the Brazilian imperial family, currently the House of Orléans-Braganza, a descendant branch of the House of Braganza. The title of the head of the imperial house is "Emperor de jure". The current head of the imperial house is Prince Bertrand of Orléans-Braganza, who took over as head of the imperial house on July 15, 2022, after the death of his brother, Prince Luiz of Orléans-Braganza. After the death of the last emperor of Brazil, Pedro II of Brazil, in 1891, in view of the proclamation of the Brazilian republic on November 15, 1889, and the revocation of all titles of nobility then existing, starting with the Brazilian Constitution of 1891. It serves to indicate the heir presumptive to the extinct imperial throne of Brazil. The Brazilian monarchists affirm that, maintaining the logic established by the Brazilian Constitution of 1824, this title would respect the line of sovereignty of the jus sanguinis, being granted to the oldest male direct descendant of Pedro I of Brazil and, failing that, to the varoa. If the holder of the title were a descendant of the Brazilian imperial family, as was Isabel Leopoldina de Bragança, who married Prince Gastão of Orléans in 1864, the title would never be transmitted to her husband, this being the Head Consort of the Imperial House Brazilian. In the same way that happened with the Brazilian emperors when they were elevated to the throne, the first-born of the Head of the Brazilian Imperial House would receive the extinct title of Prince Imperial of Brazil, and his son the title of Prince of Grão-Pará.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:14 UTC on Thursday, 15 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Head of the Imperial House of Brazil on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kevin Neural.

Do you like tea? I love trying different kinds, especially on cold days. Today, we'll talk about the British love for tea. And in a future episode, I'll show you how to make a British-style cup of tea. Hi! I'm Georgiana. Thanks for joining me for another episode of the podcast. My mission is to help you improve your fluency. And if you want to get the transcript, then visit my website: SpeakEnglishpodcast.com/podcast It's completely free! Ok, let's start! Once Upon a Time: Long ago, in the 1600s, tea debuted in the UK. This fancy beverage didn't magically appear; it came from Portugal. Catherine of Braganza, married to King Charles II, really liked tea and introduced this interesting new habit to the UK. Tea for the Elite: In the early days, tea was rare and expensive, like treasure! People kept their tea in special locked boxes called tea caddies. Back then, only people like the king and queen enjoyed it. Afternoon Tea Parties: In the 1700s, tea became more popular, but it was still costly. Then, Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, had a brilliant idea: afternoon tea parties! She invited her friends for tea and snacks in the afternoon, which became a stylish tradition. The Tea Trade: The British East India Company played a huge part in making tea famous in the UK. They established trade relations with China and brought boatloads of tea back. There were even big arguments and fights, like the Opium Wars, over tea and other trading. Tea for Everyone: In the 1800s, tea became more affordable, and people from all walks of life started drinking it. Tea became a daily treat for everyone, including workers and those with a refined taste. A Solution to a Big Problem: In the 1800s, in the UK, many people drank too much alcohol. And it caused a lot of problems. Luckily, some smart people thought tea was a better choice than alcohol. Here's why: Tea was cheaper: Tea cost less than alcohol, so more people could buy it. Easy to find: You could find tea in many places. It was easy to buy. No harmful effects: Tea didn't make you sick or misbehave, like alcohol. Good for friends: People liked to meet and drink tea together. It was fun and didn't make you drunk. Calming: Tea helped people feel calm and relaxed without alcohol. While tea did not solve all alcohol problems, it was healthier and cheaper for many. It went from being an exclusive drink to something everyone loves. And that's the short story of tea time in the UK! Enjoy your next cup of tea! In a future episode, I'll talk about the different types of tea. And I will teach you how to make a proper cup of tea.

This week we are discussing one of the lesser known Queen consorts of England, Catherine of Braganza. Promoted to princess status at the age of 2 thanks to her dad's efforts to kick the Spanish out of Portugal, little Catherine was destined to be Queen of France. But plans change and new alliances suddenly left Catherine with the prospect of having to sail across the channel to a wet little island to become the new wife of Charles II... which I am sure was just as good. Preaching for the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Raynah Marise Braganza Passanha offers a reflection on living as inclusive, servant leaders: "Saying yes to a sacred call requires vulnerability, being conscious of and addressing the fears that deter one from living that 'yes' honestly and completely. Let us commit to help one another be effective leaders. May our lives witness our love and faithfulness to God, the Church, and the Good News. As we address the shadow side of the Church, we need to also challenge the shadow side of ourselves. In our fight against exclusion, let us try to live consciously inclusive lives. Catherine of Braganza has often been overshadowed by Charles II's numerous mistresses, but she has an interesting story in her own right. She faced a difficult start in England, finding her own space in a court where the mistresses were publicly honoured, as well as being a Catholic queen for a decidedly not Catholic country. She would need to find a way to adapt to the more relaxed Restoration court, assert her own place in Charles's reign and leave a lasting legacy behind. Will she succeed? And will it be enough for the Rex Factor? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
