The Storm Before the Calm

The title of this podcast, The Storm Before the Calm, is taken from a book by George Friedman, founder of Geopolitical Futures. A good friend of mine gave me this book for Christmas. Initially, I balked at the title. I was not eager to read about “the storm” since we have been living in the eye of a hurricane since January 20, 2025, when Donald Trump took office. The last thing I wanted to do was read anything about Trump. I tackled The Storm, and it's a great book—very insightful. I love the long-view historical perspective. Yes, Trump is in the book, but he's not the storm. We're the storm.Today, we'll be talking history, economics and institutional and socioeconomic cycles.  Here are the Time Stamps | We Are the Storm  | 0:21 | Don't Worry. It's Just a Phase.  | 1:48 | Cycling Through US History  | 8:14 | The Rise of Feminism  | 11:45 | Backlash in the 21st Centruy  | 14:05 | Tired of the Trickle-Down  | 19:33 | Common Themes Throughout Our History  | 25:00:00Friedman writes that the US has two predictable cycles that date back to the "invention" of the country by the Founding Fathers: the 80-year institutional cycle and the 50-year socioeconomic cycle. Think of them like the tectonic plates shifting before an earthquake. At the end of each 50-year economic cycle, there is division and great upheaval in the country and "it's as if the country is tearing itself apart," Friedman writes. That's where we are today. I was surprised -- and somewhat dismayed but oddly relieved -- to find out that in this decade both of these cycles will shift. Two earthquakes. In 2020, Friedman said that 2025 would be a pivotal year. Well, here we are! The signals of a shift to a new socioeconomic cycle are: great discontent among the people, broken or obsolete economic systems, and a "failed president" at the end of the cycle. This president is elected during the social unrest and upheaval but uses old ideas and old models to solve current problems. Clinging to old models doesn't work and often makes the situation for the people worse. A classic example is President Herbert Hoover clinging to the old models and ignoring the plight of millions of hungry and impoverished Americans. The Great Depression got worse during his term.Hoover was the "failed president" at the end of that cycle and President Franklin Roosevelt was the first president in the new cycle. Roosevelt made sweeping changes to the federal government to tackle the Great Depression, to feed people and put them back to work, build infrastructure and fight fascism in World War II. President Lyndon Johnson built on the New Deal with the Great Society. The middle class and the union movement grew during this cycle. And the rich paid taxes. President Jimmy Carter was the "failed president" at the end of that cycle. We are in the waning years of the cycle that began with President Ronald Reagan. He infamously introduced us to "trickle-down" economics. The theory is that dramatically cutting taxes on the rich would lead to "trickle-down" wealth. Making the rich richer was somehow supposed to enrich the masses. We have been suffering under this failed model for decades. Thanks to 50 years of Reaganomics, the wealth gap in the US is wider than ever, the billionaires are becoming trillionaires, corporate welfare is running rampant while people are hungry, the middle class has shrunk, the cost of housing, automobiles and college has skyrocketed. The Trump/Musk regime is clinging to the failed model that got here -- tax cuts for the rich and deregulation. Is Trump the last "failed president" of the Trickle-Down Era?

Recorded in 2004. This course is intended to be a general introduction to the main topics and the most significant developments in 20th-century ethics. Several of the figures discussed in these lectures, notably Elizabeth Anscombe and Alasdair MacIntyre, are among the most important Catholic philosophers in the century. This course focuses on Analytic, Anglophone ethics which had dominated moral philosophy in the universities of the U.S. and the U.K. for most of the century. There is a clear point of origination of this tradition in G. E. Moore's Principia Ethica, published in 1903, and a clear line of development within this tradition to the present day. catholicthinkers.org https://youtu.be/38-f6uafpxI

How did monotheist Jews begin to worship a man named Jesus as God? Western Christians know that Jesus is God, but we often fail to make a well-articulated argument for how that came to be. We often start with beliefs about God that come from various places, and then we say that Jesus is THAT God's son. But this argument is backward. Today, I want to explain how faithful, monotheist first-century Jews began to worship Jesus as the one and only God. This week’s episode is one that I have been looking forward to sharing with you. When I first started this podcast over a year ago, I drafted a “wish list” of guests I’d like to interview. Tony Wagner was one of the names at the top of that list. When I reached out to him to invite him on the show, he accepted my invitation without hesitation. I first learned of Tony Wagner years ago when I read several of his best-selling books: Most Likely to Succeed: Preparing Our Kids For The Innovation Era; Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change The World; and The Global Achievement Gap. And recently, I had the pleasure of reading Tony’s newest book, Learning By Heart: An Unconventional Education, a memoir about his journey through life and education. During our conversation, Tony shares the list of the Seven Survival Skills that he cultivated through interviews with executives over a two year period. We talk about why test scores don’t matter and why mastery does. Throughout our conversation, Tony offers lots of valuable insight and actionable tips for parents of teens. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Ep 257 Guest: Wally Oppal Headline: Policing in the 21st Century Today’s police officer is a combination of crime fighter, detective, first responder and social worker who faces a myriad of crimes and criminals that didn’t exist a generation ago. Terrorism and cyber crime are just a few of the new threats to the safety of any community that are on the rise and are extremely challenging to address.   At the same time, as Wally Oppal says, “The public has very high expectations of the police.” Expectations that in most cases Oppal says the police are meeting, “I think, in western democratic societies we probably have the best policing in the world and that is due in large part to the high level of qualifications and training that are needed to be a police officer in Canada.”   What is clear is the web of security forces that are now compelled to work together and coordinate their efforts is expanding. No one security system can meet the needs of society, business and industry and our ever changing requirement to guard against terrorism.   We invited Justice Wally Oppal, the man who is heading up the review on education and training of police officers in BC to join us for a Conversation That Matters about preparing law enforcement officers for their role over the next few decades.   Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Center for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. Indigenous folkloric dances--the Aztecs, Mayas and Yaquis. Imagine it to be the late 15the Century or early 16th Centruy -- a time before the year 1519, before the arrival of the Spaniards to Mexico. It is a cool and breezy afternoon in the central highland plateau of Mexico. It is possibly the afternoon of the equinox, a religious feast day of tremendous magnitude in the religion of the people that inhabit a major metropolis of nearly one million people in the city of Tenochtitlan, the capital city of the Aztec empire. The call from the conchas, or shell, alerts the people that the hour has arrived for the religious celebration to take place around the base of the pyramids in the center of the city. The entire population will be asked to participate. From all the causeways that lead to the center of Tenochtitlan, the people come marching to be in the festivities in which they will pay thanks and homage to their deities. Atop the top of the pyramid, at the teocalli, the smoke from a small fire can be seen; the high priests from the orden sacerdotal, or the sacerdotal order, await for the massing of the people. When they are all together, the festivities begin – -the incantations are given, - the guerras floridas take place; these are the mock battles and mock wars fought with flowers and banners surrounded by flowers on bamboo or reed shafts carried by warriors and swung like knives and swords, instead of the real weapons; - the human sacrifices are performed; - and then the dance begins... this podcast opens by setting the stage of the folkloric dances of the ancient Aztec empire -- what we call, las DANZAS INDIGENAS – the folkloric dances of the indigenous tribes of Mexico. This scenario took place in many of the indigenous tribal cities – from Tlaxcala to Cholula to Tenochtitlan, the central might of the Aztec empire, which is today Mexico City. In this episode, we will cover the danzas indigenas, that is the pre-Columbian era of Mexican folklore and dance. We cover 3 regions or tribes and their pre-Columbian dances: (1) the Aztecs with their dances honoring their deities called Quetzalcoatl and Huizilopotchli; (2) the Poblanos and their Danza de los Quetzales; and (3) the famous Danza del Venado of the Yaquis in the Northwestern desert areas of Sonora. Different examples of the music are given in this podcast episode, as the recordings came from an outdoor, live performance of Ballet Folklorico groups in a free presentation at the large open-air ampitheatre in San Antonio, Texas. This podcast also contains a brief discussion of the importance of folkloric dance to the indigenous peoples of Mexico, as well as how it set the stage of the evolution of what is today folklorico music and dance of Mexico, after the coming of the Spaniards and the Conquest of Mexico.
