It's been quite a year for law and politics in the UK. From the unravelling scandal of wrongful convictions in the Post Office Horizon cases, to the chilling aftermath of the Lucy Letby trial, questions about accountability and reform have never been more pressing, as growing scrutiny, and ever more polarised politics, continue to threaten the delicate balance between legal principles and public confidence. And through it all, Double Jeopardy has been bringing expert comment and the sharpest analysis wherever law and politics collide. In this final episode of the year, Ken Macdonald and Tim Owen are joined by renowned legal commentator Joshua Rozenberg to look back on 2024. What were its defining legal and political moments ? Where is police accountability after the Chris Kaba shooting? Have we heard the last of Lucy Letby, and why is the government not doing more to rescue a crumbling justice system? Together, they examine the structural and cultural challenges facing the courts and legal institutions, exploring how these events are shaping public trust- and perhaps damaging it to the point of no repair. This is not just a retrospective; it's a critical interrogation of justice today. With sharp insights and deep analysis, this episode unpacks the interplay of law, politics, and public sentiment in shaping the UK's legal landscape.
When a jury cleared a firearms officer of murdering Black Londoner Chris Kaba, it triggered protests and intense scrutiny of the Met. Should charges ever have been brought? Was the killing a product of racist policing? Did Kaba's gangland connections – concealed during the trial – change the picture of the case? And will officers stop volunteering for firearms duty if they could face prosecution? Bernard Hogan-Howe, former Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, talks to Andrew Harrison about a moment of maximum controversy for policing in London and the whole UK. We are sponsored by Indeed. Send us a textThis case was heard in court this month, October 2024, the media reported on the case which caused much interest, an unarmed black male being shot by an armed police officer in London. The last time such an event attracted so much attention in 2011, there was a week of rioting across the country. To avoid a repetition, the authorities decided to charge the police officer with murder trying to defuse a reaction. When the case was heard in court, the officer was found not guilty and it seemed that mass demonstrations being planned may turn into disorder. However the criminal past of Chris Kaba was then released which seemed to change many people's attitude towards the shooting.

According to the BBC and certain politicians the black community is traumatised by the shooting of gangster Chris Kaba. I say cobblers! I'm bloody traumatised that certain people are acting as if this foul gangster is a saint when he was really just a thug and a gangster. He represented all that is wrong with this gold chains and no brains culture. Am I allowed to say that or is it a crime against diversity?! In this podcast I talk about the cult of diversity that has infected the UK. Common Purpose has replaced Common Sense. There is no better example of this than when my home city of Coventry was chosen as the City of Culture. Instead of celebrating the City's rich artistic culture and history it instead focused on preaching the cult of diversity. It was a miserable flop which failed and went bankrupt on the altar of so called diversity. This cultural Common Purpose orgy cost the city millions and left no legacy to future generations of this great City. We don't need Common Purpose. We need Common Sense. ➡️JOIN THE STRUGGLE + BECOME A MEMBER OF THE HARAMBEE ORGANISATION OF BLACK UNITY (HOBU): https://www.blackunity.org.uk/membership In this week's Black Political Rant, Kehinde (@Kehinde_Andrews) discusses how we understand Monday's not-guilty verdict of Sgt. Martyn Blake's trial, a White MET police marksman who killed an unarmed Black man, Chris Kaba in 2022. Kehinde links this to other cases of Black men killed by the police, to-date UK stats on police killings of Black people; and the relevance of Malcolm's concept of "The Negro" that's still with us today. He makes plain that the racism of the police is the racism of the society. The police are as racist as the society allows them to be. We have the police force that society wants. The police, police with the consent of the racist society. The fears, prejudices, negative criminal stereotypical assessments, hallucinations, and "perceptual distortions" of the police are all features of the psychosis of Whiteness, a global phenomenon, that leads to our deaths. In this week's Interview Kehinde talks with award-winning Sylvia Arthur (LOATAD founder) and Seth Avusuglo (LOATAD manager) from the Library Of Africa and The African Diaspora Archive. They discuss the origin, mission, and development of LOATAD, the difficulty of getting Black books on the continent, the writing residencies + more. The Library Of Africa and The African Diaspora (LOATAD) is a decolonizing private library, archive, writing residency, research institute, and museum dedicated to the work of Afrikan and Diaspora writers from the late 19th century to the present day. Based in Accra, Ghana, it was founded by Sylvia Arthur in 2017 using 1300 of her own books. LOATAD's current collection contains around 4000 books by writers from 41 of Africa's 54 countries and Black authors from the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, and around the world. LOATAD's mission: to celebrate and champion Africa's rarely acknowledged contribution to the global literary canon. A former colleague of the firearms officer who fatally shot Chris Kaba told Today that he should not have been put on trial for his murder. Metropolitan Police Officer Martyn Blake, shot and killed Mr Kaba – who was unarmed – during a vehicle stop in South London in September 2022. Mr Blake denied killing the 24 year old.The unnamed colleague, who was at the scene immediately after the shots were fired, said: "At no point was there any evidence that Martyn Blake had done anything wrong or at least deviated from his training or indeed the law."Mr Kaba's family have said they are "devastated" by the outcome. "The acquittal of Martyn Blake isn't just a failure for our family but for all those affected by police violence," his cousin said. "Despite the verdict, we won't be silenced."Listen to the Today programme on Radio 4 and BBC Sounds: 6-9am Monday-Friday, and 7-9am on Saturdays.
The Crown Prosecution Service should now be in the dock answering why they named and put a brave armed cop on trial for the killing of a gangster who refused to be arrested. I'm glad that the scumbag, Chris Kaba, has been killed. There was NO need for a trial of the Policeman and the jury clearly agreed. The CPS is the same organisation who failed to prosecute Jimmy Saville when Starmer was in charge. They are NOT fit for purpose. Do you agree? All of this is happening on the day that Sir Keir Starmer is releasing thousands of crooks early to make way for those who rioted and protested in the summer after Southport. Meanwhile the yobs at Manchester Airport are still not charged and the bimbo wannabe porn star who threw a milk shake at Nigel Farage is still free even though she has admitted her guilt now.
