Malaysia has so much potential - but what's holding it back? Ex-Perdana Petroleum MD Shamsul Saad and Khoo Hsu Chuang get real about the Malay mindset, education, and the bigger forces shaping the country's future. They talk about how culture and government policies play a role in success (or lack of it) and why critical thinking is a game-changer in today's digital world. But it isn't just about education. They get into leadership, economic growth, and why shaking things up is long overdue. Automation is changing jobs, governance feels stuck in mediocrity, and bold leadership is needed to push Malaysia forward. They even compare Malaysia's struggles with the U.S., showing how deeply rooted interests can hold progress back. Looking back at Malaysia's golden era in the 70s, they discuss how colonial history shaped the way people think and why the country needs a stronger sense of purpose. Inequality, talent, creativity—these things matter, and real change won't happen without the right leadership. At the end of the day, it's about breaking free from old mindsets and surrounding yourself with the right people to make real progress. (Many thanks to CITYPlus for their collaboration with The Do More Podcast, in whose studio this conversation was recorded. CITYPlus is Malaysia's first Chinese business radio station, dedicated to delivering in-depth analysis on local and international current affairs, markets, and businesses.) For nonprofits, managing a common purpose is no small feat, yet Adam Luecking, CEO of Clear Impact and author of Social Sector Hero: How Government and Philanthropy Can Fund for Impact, offers a masterclass on achieving measurable change in the nonprofit sector. During his conversation with host Julia Patrick, Adam highlights the transformative power of aligning stakeholders toward a shared goal and implementing data-driven strategies. Through a couple captivating stories, he showcases the importance of defining and measuring success. "Measurement brings precision to your passion," Adam begins, stressing that without metrics, organizations risk misdirecting their efforts. His insights reveal that successful collaboration stems from clarity, measurement, and commitment to a common vision. One standout case involved the state of Maryland's focus on child well-being, which saw significant improvements in school readiness over a decade—rising from 49% to 83%. Similarly, Baltimore's initiatives to address infant health disparities reduced the city's black-white disparity in teen birth rates by 75%. These stories he shares demonstrate the profound impact of shared objectives paired with data-informed action plans. For nonprofit organizations eager to join this movement, Adam offers some practical advice: start with one to three measurable goals, iterate as needed, and focus on progress over perfection. As Julia adds in, his approach transforms what might seem like daunting data work into an accessible, empowering process. For those inspired to act on all this, his book, Social Sector Hero is available for free at socialsectorhero.com. According to the BBC and certain politicians the black community is traumatised by the shooting of gangster Chris Kaba. I say cobblers! I'm bloody traumatised that certain people are acting as if this foul gangster is a saint when he was really just a thug and a gangster. He represented all that is wrong with this gold chains and no brains culture. Am I allowed to say that or is it a crime against diversity?! In this podcast I talk about the cult of diversity that has infected the UK. Common Purpose has replaced Common Sense.  There is no better example of this than when my home city of Coventry was chosen as the City of Culture. Instead of celebrating the City's rich artistic culture and history it instead focused on preaching the cult of diversity. It was a miserable flop which failed and went bankrupt on the altar of so called diversity. This cultural Common Purpose orgy cost the city millions and left no legacy to future generations of this great City. We don't need Common Purpose. We need Common Sense. CX Leader Podcast with Steve Walker | A resource for customer experience leaders

Producer's Note: During the summer months we'll be re-releasing some of our favorite episodes for our "Summer Encore Series." This episode was originally on October 19, 2021. Guests Jennifer Pursifull and Sharon Bislich did some wonderful work with the company Medxcel in tying customer and employee data together, which helped empower their employees to create better experiences. That's why we loved this episode – it beautifully demonstrates the powerful advantage of putting your CX and EX data together.  Please note that some details and situations described in the episode may not neccessarily be the same as when it originally was released. The advantage of experience management (or "XM") is the holistic view of experience across the company. By leveraging customer and employee data together, companies can take their experience programs to the next level. But what companies are applying this practice and how's it working out for them? Host Steve Walker welcomes Jennefer Pursifull, VP of marketing and sales, and Sharon Bislich, director for marketing, communication, and engagement – both from Medxcel, a healthcare facilities management company - to discuss how they successfully built their program to empower their employees to create better experiences for their clients.  Listen to more episodes at https://cxleaderpodcast.com/ Learn more about Walker at https://walkerinfo.com/

The riders sat on their mounts, horses and camels, and gazed across the desert toward the shimmering sea and a small village on its shore. An old fortress dominated what passed for a skyline, the only building that stood more than two stories above the ground. Clusters of palm trees waved in the hot, dry wind, and the soldiers could see knots of people moving about in the town's plaza. No enemy troops were visible and no defenses prepared. The long journey across the desert toward their target had yielded a strategic surprise. Fifty men on horseback stayed in place, while the larger group of four hundred men riding camels began to move left and right. The soldiers on foot rested, knowing they would soon have to run across rocky ground to keep up with the cavalry. Two men had planned this attack; one would lead the horsemen straight toward the target while the other rode his camel around to hit the flanks. With only a nod from their leader, the men charged toward the town of Aqaba. Most students of the First World War know of the great campaigns by mighty armies on the Western and Eastern fronts. Some know of smaller battles fought in Italy, Greece, and on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. But few—apart from some movie buffs—know the story of the Great Arab Revolt of 1916-18 that brought down an empire that had lasted for over six centuries and gave us the modern Middle East with all its glories and terrors. The revolt was a minor affair in the minds of generals in London, Paris, Berlin, and Constantinople, and its impact on the overall course of the Great War was small. But it produced some of the greatest heroes of that war, men whose deeds shaped the future course of millions of lives around the world. Hetty explores how transpersonal coaching takes us ‘beyond the person' and into the wider ecosystems in which we live and work, including the spiritual realm. Hetty and Simon share their own faith journeys that have shaped how they engage with this work. They discuss how spirituality is either ignored in the workplace because it is not relevant to a high-performance ‘modern' work culture and belongs in the private realm, or how it can be instrumentalised i.e. take this mindfulness course and your productivity will increase by 30% (which immediately turns a transpersonal opportunity into a secular, goal-focused activity. To work with a transpersonal frame is therefore challenging yet Hetty claims they are vitally important. She describes how this work needs to be embodied and how her yoga practice has helped her with this over the years. Hetty also shares how women's experiences have been marginalised, and the part they play in developing a transpersonal frame. We are facing very challenging times, and the answers will not come from more of the same. It is only by de-centering the human and recovering a sense of belonging to the whole that will bring hope and change to our current state of being. Hetty believes that focusing on the transpersonal is an essential part of this journey. Bio Hetty brings 25 years of psychology and executive coaching experience to global leadership development. A best-selling author, her career has spanned the arts, journalism, media, health, and policy development in the private, public and voluntary sectors. She designs and delivers leader-coach and global culture change programs. Key focuses are women's leadership, Transpersonal Coaching, and the regenerative contributions approach. She works ecosystemically and holistically founded on transpersonal psychology and informed by psychoanalysis and embodiment approaches. She teaches at the Irish Management Institute, is a Senior Associate Director with Common Purpose, and she coaches, teaches, and facilitates in French. Hetty is Director of Publications Strategy for the Association for Coaching and Executive Editor of the AC global magazine, Coaching Perspectives, now a leading publication in the field. Hetty holds a Masters in Psychoanalytic and Systemic Approaches to Organisational Consulting from the Tavistock Centre (UEL), a Certificate in Coaching Supervision from Oxford Brookes, a Masters in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute (UL), and a BA in languages from Cambridge University. She is married with two millennial daughters. Recent publications: The Future of Coaching: Vision, Leadership and Responsibility in a Transforming World published by Routledge. Her long-form essay on Radical hope: a dimension of the soul rooted will be published in the Autumn by PCCS Books in the collection of essays, Holding the Hope: Essays exploring psychological and spiritual responses and practices to climate change and extreme biodiversity loss. Here at Common Purpose, we are passionate about working with people to create a more equitable and inclusive world. Which means we love a purpose-driven conversation. In fact, we believe we need them, not because we need everyone to hold the same point of view, but because we need to build bridges between people who do not – to foster a greater sense of social cohesion, tolerance, and collective responsibility for the issues that affect individuals and society as a whole. In this second episode we want to dig a bit deeper into what really are Purpose-driven conversations, why we need to have them, how to start them – and of course, keep them going.Connect with Common Purpose at:https://commonpurpose.org/LinkedinTwitterFacebookInstagramYouTubeThe Big Spark Cast is hosted by Adi Sengupta and produced by Kate Rintoul and James King. Our Music is supplied by Epidemic Sound. The Big Spark Cast is brought to you by the not-for-profit organization Common Purpose.
