As passengers pushed forward, I held people back so an elderly woman could board safely. She managed to get a seat. So did I. But as more elderly passengers stood in the aisle, I gave mine up. Here's what struck me. The train was full of young people—likely students. Not one of them moved. Not one offered a seat. Heads down. Eyes glued to phones and tablets. Everyone seemingly choosing to ignore what was happening right in front of them. No guard in sight. No intervention. Just a carriage full of people… and a quiet sense that everyone was on their own. This wasn't a one-off. This train is regularly overcrowded. People know it. Nothing changes. And in that moment, the train felt like more than just a journey.
