Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker break down the Blue Jays' 6-0 loss to the Yankees at the Rogers Centre. They take your calls, and get to Gerrit Cole - the likely AL Cy Young winner - shutting down the Jays once again. Why couldn't the bats take advantage of the pitches Cole gave them? They discuss the offence being completely absent over the last two games, and chat about the decisions to pitch to Aaron Judge - bad pitches or better swings from the reigning AL MVP? Plus, they chat the makeup of the roster, and get into how basically every player on this team has been underperforming all season long. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.

The Blue Jays came up short against AL Cy Young frontrunner Gerrit Cole on Thursday night, and now face an incredibly tough test against the Rays this weekend at the dreaded Trop. But they're still in the driver's seat in the race for the final AL wild card spots. They are also, somehow, tied with the Astros for the third-best record in the American League. It's only going to get weirder from here, folks. And to get you setup for the weirdness, we kicked this week's episode off with a semi-traditional vibe check, and followed that up by discussing the road ahead, the AL West, the latest twists and turns in the Alek Manoah saga, Mitch White, Vlad pinch hitting on his bad knee, Yusei Kikuchi's sleep habits, Mike Babcock for some reason, and so much more.Have a listen! You can find us in all the usual places, such as Apple Podcasts……as well as Spotify, and wherever else you get your podcasts (unless it's Google still, though I remain hopeful that I'll eventually get through to someone who can help and the feed will actually get fixed at some point).THE BATFLIP is a reader-supported publication. Alek Manoah REFUSED to report to Triple-A and is expected to be shut down for the season. We're reacting to yet another black mark on the season for Jared and Dallas' AL Cy Young pick. Trea Turner has pretty much been the best player in baseball since he received his standing ovation and we're trying to figure out what's in the air in Philly. We also speculate on what could be the best playoff matchups, the NL MVP race, the A's not being as bad as we thought, and A-Rod's comments on AVG. Thanks for listening and we'll see you tomorrow! The New York Yankees got upsetting news on Sunday after their wacky walk-off victory against the Milwaukee Brewers: Jasson Dominguez has a torn UCL and will need Tommy John surgery. Stacey and Steve react to the news, which put a damper on what should have been a happy day for the team who salvaged the last game of the three-game set against the Brewers. Gerrit Cole continued his case for the AL Cy Young but got no run support as the Yankees offense was no-hit for 10 and ⅓ innings until Oswaldo Cabrera ended the drought with a run-scoring double that tied the score. Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run in the 12th inning to tie the game after the Brewers took another lead, and finally, Kyle Higashioka walked it off in the 13th. Then it's Minors Monday, and Stacey and Steve discuss Estevan Florial and what could have been with the outfielder, who will be a free agent at the season's end. And the Yankees are heading to Boston for a four-game set in Fenway, so we discuss the pitching matchups and give your our bold predictions. The New York Yankees won two in a row for the first time in nearly a month, beating the Detroit Tigers 4-2! But before we recap the game and its performances, we have to talk about the Yankees releasing Josh Donaldson and placing Harrison Bader on waivers. It was a busy day around baseball concerning the waiver wire. As of the show's recording, we don't know what will happen to Bader or Donaldson. Teams heading to the playoffs could pick them up/sign them. As for Tuesday's win, Michael King pitched four scoreless innings and was followed by Jhony Brito, who threw three and a third innings of scoreless ball. We discuss their performances and the offense, which clubbed three solo shots: Gleyber Torres, Kyle Higashioka, and Anthony Volpe. Plus, Aaron Judge scored on a passed ball. Then we talk about DJ LeMahieu's turnaround and Sean Casey's role. We look at the numbers and discuss the importance of LeMahieu going forward because he's signed through 2026. Then we discuss Gerrit Cole's AL Cy Young chances. Cole will be starting on Wednesday night against the Tigers and is looking to repeat his incredible outing last time when he pitched 7.2 innings against the Rays and struck out 11. Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker break down the Blue Jays' 1-0 shutout win over the Guardians in Cleveland! They take your calls, and get to the seven innings of shutout ball from Kevin Gausman - despite walking the tightrope again offensively, how important is it that Gausman continue to perform? Is he in the AL Cy Young conversation? They also get to the offence and more double plays at inopportune times - is this just what this team is now? The New York Yankees lost to the Chicago White Sox, 5-1, on Monday night. This time, the offense couldn't get the big hit and had the bases loaded three times. Sox starter Dylan Cease surrendered seven walks, and the Yankees couldn't take advantage. Gerrit Cole didn't have his next start, but he was still pretty good pitching into the eighth inning. We discuss his outing, and we talk about whether or not we think we could/should win the AL Cy Young in 2023. Is it his to lose? Who else is in the running? And what will it take for him to win it? Then we preview the second game of the series between Touki Toussaint and Clarke Schmidt. Schmidt has been the Yankees' most reliable starter behind Gerrit Cole, which is definitely what we all expected when the 2023 season started. Thursday October 11th, 1979 @ Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, MD The outfield is torn up, the warning track riddled with puddles, the infield is choppy, and the grass is wet. Suffice it to say, Memorial Stadium is a mess. But that won't stop the World Series. The Baltimore Orioles jumped out to an early lead in game one, but they just barely held off the Pirates late rally to secure a 5-4 victory. The Pittsburgh bullpen kept the O's bats quiet, while the offense chipped away at the lefty Flanagan. The 1979 AL Cy Young displayed impressive resolve, inducing a pop-out from '79 NL MVP Willie Stargell to end the game and strand '78 NL MVP Dave Parker at third base. The stars have come out to play these playoffs, and tonight will be no different. The pitching matchup is a pair of future Hall-of-Famers and longtime TV broadcasters, handsome Jim Palmer (10 - 6 3.30 ERA 155 IP) and the Dutchman Bert Blyleven (12 - 5 3.60 ERA 237 IP). Both will pitch well tonight, but neither will factor in the decision. The key hit from this game will come from an unexpected, yet quite familiar player. Tune in for an excellent game two. Audioclips from joeydbball Youtube. ABC broadcast w/ Keith Jackson, Howard Cosell, and Don Drysdale As always shoutout to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, boxscores, background information, and much, much more. Catch you next time, P.C.O.
