On this episode Matt continues a chat with Kristaps Andrejsons from the Eastern Border Podcast about the Soviet Union’s mass athletics program. We also hear from Chris Osborne, our fearless comrade over at Play Comics Podcast. History, politics, performance enhancing drugs for curlers. This episode goes far and wide. Our ears are graced once more with a few tunes - Bāliņš jāja kara taku and Vēja vārdi - from the Latvian symphonic, melodic, gothic, folk, metal, rock band Oceanpath. This week Matt chats with Kristaps Andrejsons, from the Eastern Border Podcast, about the Soviet Union’s mass athletics program. Sport is always political, by examining the intentions behind the program we learn about the socio-political and moralistic ideologies of the Soviet Union. Or, Matt just wanted to resurrect another undergrad paper! We start off by getting to know Kristaps, why he started his podcast and find out what brand of imperialism he hates more! He also introduces us to a surprise guest, Uncle Gundars who was visiting from Mother Russia! Before jumping into the pre-Bolshevik sporting context, we hear Daughter of the Northern Wind from the Latvian symphonic/melodic/gothic/folk metal and rock band Oceanpath. Kristaps kicks things off by describing life in Tsarist Russia, while Matt describes the limited athletics happening prior to WW1. 1917-20’s was an era of tumultuous upheaval in Russia with revolutions, civil war and non-stop Cake Parties. Despite this situation, what would become the Soviet Union established a trailblazing public health system (The GTO) that ‘encouraged’ athletic participation. Results were recorded, quantified and measured against the results of other groups as a way of formalizing, or manufacturing, the New Soviet Man (Homo Sovieticus). This program became so ‘popular’ that professionalism and world-class finishes were attached to the model in the 1950’s (part 2) allowing the Soviets to dominate international competition for the next 4 decades; even being exported to the satellite states and emulated by the West to such an extent that “modern athletics” is very Soviet. We wrap up by hearing another track from Oceanpath, this one is aptly named The Puppet Show. Thanks again to Kristaps from the Eastern Border Podcast for joining me in the deep dive, did you know he also fences?!? Thanks to Uncle Gundars for sharing your stories and to Oceanpath for the fiery tunes that went so well with these episodes. On this episode, Phil sits down with Sean McGuire, the creator and host of the Share A Slice Podcast. In the first part, Sean tell us about his podcast, atheism and what it’s like talking with people from all walks of life. We get to hear a few of Sean’s stories about talking with the head of an UFO religion, sex workers, drag queens, and someone who prefers to pee and poop in her tent. Who are we to judge?! In the second part of our chat we dig into the notions of countercultures and subcultures and wonder if they hold revolutionary potential. Should everyone be involved in subcultural experiences? Maybe countercultures aren’t for everyone. Is the intention of counterculture to affect change, or simply to have a non-mainstream lifestyle? It’s an episode all about sharing stories and sharing a slice of life. If you enjoyed our chat, make sure to subscribe, rate and review Sean’s podcast. Also, follow Share A Slice on Twitter @SlicesPodcast and on Facebook @ShareASlicePodcast and on Instagram @ShareASlicePodcast. We thank Katreese Barnes for the music on this episode. Katreese is a music director, composer, producer, arranger, pianist, vocalist & saxophonist. If you don’t know Katreese Barnes by name, you certainly know her music. Two time Emmy award winner, a Grammy nominated pianist, producer and composer, Katreese has been a hidden hand at orchestrating some of our cherished cultural sounds. Katreese is currently working on Welcome 2 My House, a live streamed internet show that she created and where she surprises people in their living rooms with their favorite artist singing their favorite song. W2MH showcases artists in a very intimate environment while playing with a string quartet, bass, and percussions. The Motto of the Show is “We’re Going to Keep The Music Alive, One Living Room At A Time”. If you enjoyed the music, please make sure to subscribe to W2MH on Youtube. Matt sat down with disability advocate, educator, public speaker and podcaster Jahmeelah Gamble. If you like going down rabbit holes, this is the episode for you. We chatted about balancing conflicting cultural expectations in an educational context, accidently landing a TV show for 6 seasons and the ways Jahmeelah has endeavored to be a humanist rather than a knight in shining armor. Matt shares a little confession, while Jahm talks about her brand. Spoiler: it’s intersectional-reflexive applied empathetic-humanism! Matt also gets Jahm to explain how and why she became such a strong education advocate and how advocacy extends well beyond the classroom to permeate all aspects of life. As a public speaker, Jahmeelah shies away from intentionally trying to inspire while being mindful of the power in setting an example. Wrapping up the conversation, Matt explores how Jahm’s faith intersects with her speaking and advocacy. Jahm gives us an impassioned description of the struggles facing educational aid workers in Canada. Jahmeelah’s message of empowerment and positivity is downright infectious, so be sure to check out the Slay the Mic Podcast. At times, our furry friends bring us joy, pleasure and happiness. Their company is valued, and they too are valued members of our homes. Other times, they bring us closer to understanding why not sweating the small stuff is an important life lesson. As humans we think we have the benefit of being intelligent and rational. But are we alone in that regard? From the social sciences, humanities and art comes an episode full of love for all species. We are joined by the creator of The Species Podcast, Macken Murphy, to discuss his show, his views on veganism, and the intersection of science and the animal kingdom. We are then joined by Tracy for our first round-table discussion. It gets heated as we discuss the merits of cloning, banning certain breeds of dogs, and which species make good house pets (Hint: It’s most definitely not polar bears!). We thank Michael Harren, a Brooklyn-based composer and performer for letting us play his music on this episode. Michael combines elements of classical composition with experimental electronics and storytelling, to create hypnotic and boldly intimate work that walks the line between Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel and Dead Can Dance. Games of chance have long been a part of societies. From dice, spinning tops, or playing cards, we have always wanted to win big on luck. On this episode we talk about teaching practices and the idea that social media has a place in the classroom. We discuss our views of pedagogy (the art, science, and even craft of teaching), classroom power and dynamics between educators and students, and the politics of education. Why aren’t educators turning to social media in the classroom? Can social media result in more classroom engagement, exposure to our social world, and, even, democratize the learning process? It’s ambitious. But is it totally out of the realm of the possible? We tend to think not. For an example of some of the practical benefits, as well as the challenges, of using social media in the classroom see: https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1186%2Fs41239-017-0041-6.pdf We thank Gabrielle Giguere, singer, songwriter, artist extraordinaire, and all-around great person, for letting us play some tracks off of Her Harbour’s album ‘Go Gently Into The Night’. Guest co-host Anthony Von Dessauer, creator of the popular podcast The Curse of Silverlake, joins Phil to discuss music preservation, art, the potential impacts of technology, and the stratified character of our society. How art gets commercially made and distributed is a contested domain. Luckily for us avid music lovers, an Archive.org project seeks to digitize and democratize some of the greatest music ever made. Join us as we explore the fuzzy boundaries of who produces, who consumes, and who profits when art becomes more widely available. Somehow we managed to also talk about driverless trucks, peeing in a bottle, and a fantastic metal band Cyborg Octopus. We intended to talk about a 78rpm record project, we swear. This week we deep dive into the world of resilience. From Francis Bacon’s musings of how sound bounces off walls, to the proposal that colouring can help block the nasty world around us: we explore the etymology, the history, and some implications of the resilience turn. Even our game of ‘What Do You Hate More’ was (unintentionally) inspired by the notions of risk, vulnerability, and recovery. So do what you do, ‘cuz we’re all just trying to cope. We get all up in the art on this episode. Matt visited the National Art Gallery in beautiful Ottawa, ON. We get a walkthrough, you get one of our most cynical takes yet. From First Nations, Métis & Cree artwork, to the paintings of the iconic group of seven, we just can’t wrap our heads around the colonial couplings found in the gallery. Luckily, Emily Carr saved us from total despair. That is, until we try to make sense of postmodern art. It’s like finding lost money in your jacket pocket: confusing. Really confusing. To follow along as we dissect some art, check-out the pics Matt took while on his tour: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1j_AY8KzuF8S5u1rruQovVQsuA-Gl1s2T?usp=sharing We thank Evil Can Evil for kindly allowing us to play their songs: Winter Rider, Power, Love & Hate, and I’m Alive. Blues filtered through a 1970s' distortion, with a hint of 1960s' rock. A voice full of blues and smoke. Drums that smash the permafrost. A bass that moves snowdrifts. Guitars that lash stronger than a boreal wind. The strength of the North, with the soul of blues and the energy of rock. Evil Can Evil, the nordic rock's ambassadors. Evil Can Evil is a Quebec City quartet founded in 2007. The band is made up of: JF, vocalist and guitarist, Math, drummer, Manuel, bassist and Seb, rhythm guitar. Through stories of dangerous women, broken hearts, identity crises, territorial dispossession and courageous snow plows, Evil Can Evil builds a universe breathing a new life into the tired stoner rock genre. Stoner rock is dead, hail nordic rock. If Evil Can Evil doesn't make you want to dance, then you're more frozen than a mammoth prisoner of the Siberian soil. In this episode we offer up our resolutions and predictions for 2018. Matt is determined to make this year his most focused ever and Phil doesn’t think the world will end, yet. With a heartfelt round of confessions, we agree that being warm is worse than cold. Typical. We decided to end things with a long overdue round of thank-you’s to all those who have graced us with iTunes and Facebook reviews. Kicking off the year sayin’, Thanks! We thank David Wagner for kindly allowing us to play a few songs. Computer Hash is the brainchild of David from the tiny town of Fenwick, Michigan. Computer Hash creates techno and experimental electronic music littered with a variety of original audio samples recorded on cassette tape, many over a decade ago. Most of these audio samples are from various parties that David attended with cassette recorder in hand, ready to capture interesting drunken rants for future use in music. Recently, David has been working to promote and create new music under the Computer Hash umbrella. On this episode we review 2017, a year punctuated with the bad, the ugly & the awkward. From Trump and #MeToo to the Phoenix pay system catastrophe and no more Sears holiday catalogues, we talk about key moments in politics and science, showing how 2017 was another year with far reaching impacts for all of us. 2017 was also Canada’s 150th birthday. As Canadians, we think back on what that meant to us and provide some advice for those of you looking to build a $4.3M outdoor hockey rink. 2017 also brought two births: Matt’s baby girl, Violet and, this podcast! In what will become a yearly tradition, we close the episode by talking about all our 2017 podcast appearances, the interviews we did throughout the year, and the great folks we had the chance to meet. Here’s to a wonderful 2018. Happy New Year everyone. Be kind. We all celebrate the holiday season differently. That’s a good thing. On this episode Matt & Phil share their holiday traditions. From savory meat pies, to sugary cookies, to cups filled with rum and eggnog, they show how good food and good people make the holidays a special time of the year. During the second half of the show, Phil connects with friends of the podcast to talk about their holiday traditions. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. We thank Alex Diskin for kindly allowing us to play three of his songs: Heist, Outlaw, and A.A.A. Matt & Phil chat on a cross-country check-up this week. Phil opens up about his life as an aspiring PhD, Matt tells us how to travel with a young one, and we debate the merits and demerits of compression socks and tourists. Yup, it got a little silly. Go figure. We do settle down and put on our serious faces to discuss how we, individually and collectively, experience space and time. Seen as social aspects of our world, how we experience space and time is highly dependant on the structures that surround us. However, we also have agency to navigate space and time, allowing for seemingly endless opportunities. With a different view of space and time, is it possible to think about creativity, productivity, technological advancements, and (dis)abilities differently? While Matt & Phil yearn for longer summers their special guests would like some of the soft, fluffy, sticky, cold, frozen, lifeless substance we sometimes call snow. We have yet to fully understand or realize the breadth and depth of Gord Downie’s influence. Musically, poetically, socially, personally, Gord Downie was always more than the frontman for The Tragically Hip: he was a Canadian icon. We connected with the guys over at the Skip & Josh Podcast to talk about the Hip, swap stories and have a good old fashioned tribute to a great Canadian from Kingston, Ontario. This September bonus episode is our way of celebrating International Podcasting Day. We spent the week audio journalling our adventures and mishaps, recording on handheld devices on the fly - often while driving it seemed. We ended up talking a lot about other great podcasts too, so make sure to check them out. We hope this behind the scenes episode sheds some light on what it's like being a podcaster. Hopefully, somehow, it can help bring us all a little closer together. Matt gets ready to be a father by painting a room; Phil picked up Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder by Nassim Nicholas Taleb but lost it on his bookshelf ...he’ll delay reporting back to us about what he learns/finds out. Phil then makes Matt realize that the Blue Jays season is over after the first 12 games and that the evil empire (The Yankees) have returned to dominate the division. Resilience and Mental Health in the Classroom (14:50):We wanted our first episode to initiate an ongoing conversation about the challenges students, teachers and administrators face around mental health within academic/scholastic settings. We both feel there is a persistent stigma around admitting one is “struggling” which often can create a barrier to finding help despite the growing resources provided. Phil talks about three articles related to resilience and we discussed the amorphous character of the concept. There was an historical bent to the whole discussion. Phil suggests that the concept is a static one, which made Matt think for a second before suggesting that ‘vulnerability’, a term often associated with resilience, could denote change. We looked deep into each others eye’s, agreed, somewhat (Phil wasn’t as convinced) and then settled on the idea that all students and all teachers need guides. We pondered whether resilience was a thing (materialistic) or an idea (object for analysis). Maybe it’s a multiplicity. Phil convinced Matt that we all undergo ‘switching’ between conceptualizations of resilience constantly, who then hinted at the dynamics of imposed meaning (defined by an other) and how intent and meaning interplay within an individual's experience of resilience and vulnerability. The conversation took a serious tone for a moment there. Links:•Jessica Riddell “Building resilience into the classroom” (appearing in University Affairs, April 11, 2017). •Daniel R. Curtis “Coping with crisis: The resilience and vulnerability of pre-industrial settlements” It's a book Phil reviewed for Histoire Sociale/Social History •Ben Anderson “What kind of thing is resilience?” (appearing in Politics, Vol.35(1), 2015) Recommendations (49:35):Matt brought in two books: 1491 by Charles C. Mann and The Plague by Albert Camus. He wants everyone to know that 1491 made him reconsider everything he learned in archaeology class, it's an account written by a science journalist about the history of North, Central and South America up to the year before Columbus and his Merry Men arrived. The political bent is that it challenges the colonialist-reading of ‘their history’. The Plague (available in audio) is the second most popular book by Camus, it's about the quarantining of a Algerian city during an outbreak of some kind of plague, but is more a vehicle for Camus to work through many philosophic themes (ugh). Phil recommended a podcast about Star Trek while Matt tried to ask questions with a straight face. Phil attempted to justify his actions (to whom, exactly?). To be continued... Concluding thought: failure can be good.
