In the United States 1 out 3 young people are arrested at least once by age 23 - this could be as high as 41% research reveals. “Getting arrested is much more complicated than just showing up” Julio Briones tell us in Surviving Arrest: The Complete Guide. Julio hosts An Ounce of Prevention podcast, he is also a Personal Crisis Manager, Coach, and is the founder and CEO of AnswerMan Speciality Services. Julio has an inspirational story; he embodies the advice and life lessons he offers. On this episode we explore the potential crises that can result from being arrested and incarcerated. From initial contact with the criminal justice system, through to spending time behind bars, Julio tells us of the importance of having a plan and support systems in place. We also talk about life after incarceration, the issues that offenders face and how reintegration in the labour market could be made easier. We also have a Pop-Culture Check-in with Paul. Last month Christie and Nicole attempted to have a discussion about what they wish they would have learned in school with Christie’s sister-in-law, Colleen (aka Colleen from Potomac with the small kitchen), while Christie and Colleen were on the Wheeler family vacation. Unfortunately, the Dynamic Duo experienced a myriad of issues ranging from screaming children to problems with the audio. However, a new day has come! What once was known as “the lost episode” is no longer lost! Please enjoy the best parts from our discussion that hot and drink filled day in June! Well, you've been on the edge of your seat waiting to hear all about the end of the LA trip. Wait no longer! In this episode the dynamic duo discusses their last night in the City of Angels and their BIG celebrity sighting in Part Two of their LA Recap! An outing to a fancy LA establishment did leave Christie and Nicole with an unexpected question about artichoke consumption. In true theme of the podcast, the end of a vacation and the transition to normal everyday life is about as underwhelming as things get. But it doesn't matter how long the jet lag or post-vaca bloat last, they are always ready for their next adventure! Part Two of their discussion includes: Craig’s, Michael Bolton, California Pizza Kitchen, and Delta Sky Lounge, as well as all of the reasons to be underwhelmed when you return fro a trip! This week we're doing another worldbuild due to Quentin moving (although maybe he'd get more done without Assassin's Creed Origins). But it's not just any worldbuild. This time we try using an rpg to help us along. Let us know if you like this experiment, because we think it turned out really well and would like to incorporate more storytelling games into our worldbuild in the future. For now, enjoy finding out some of what happened on Mars before the martians came to Earth. July we are taking part in an indie podcast campaign called 2PodsADay. Each day, the twitter @2PodsADay will feature 2 indie podcasts, including us! So follow them, so you can listen more and listen indie. The two pods we mentioned during our show are: I Never Saw That and Memphis Surf - They're both really great podcasts we may not have found out about without this campaign. Also, thanks to Ben Robbins for making the game Microscope that we used for this episode. It's a really cool game and if you liked that he has more storytelling games of similar type on his website where you can buy them all! http://arsludi.lamemage.com/ Email: doubleissueshow@gmail.com Daniel Twitter Quentin Twitter Website / Twitter / Facebook /Wordpress / Discord Art by Lisa Prather: Instagram / Website Songs: Freeharmonics by The Freeharmonic Orchestra CC BY 4.0
This is Part Two of our very first crossover podcast with DecantDC! Part One can be found at- https://apple.co/2tRgPlD. This week Nicole and Christie teamed up with Dana and Sarah from DecantDC to try out four different wines and discuss how exactly one makes friends as an adult. The ladies chat about the different ways they have tried to make new friends during different points in their lives- whether they were living in the same place they grew up in, alone in a city they just moved to, part of a couple that was looking for other couple friends, or as a new parent. The best part about this crossover is that everyone made new friends in the process! This week Matt chats with Kristaps Andrejsons, from the Eastern Border Podcast, about the Soviet Union’s mass athletics program. Sport is always political, by examining the intentions behind the program we learn about the socio-political and moralistic ideologies of the Soviet Union. Or, Matt just wanted to resurrect another undergrad paper! We start off by getting to know Kristaps, why he started his podcast and find out what brand of imperialism he hates more! He also introduces us to a surprise guest, Uncle Gundars who was visiting from Mother Russia! Before jumping into the pre-Bolshevik sporting context, we hear Daughter of the Northern Wind from the Latvian symphonic/melodic/gothic/folk metal and rock band Oceanpath. Kristaps kicks things off by describing life in Tsarist Russia, while Matt describes the limited athletics happening prior to WW1. 1917-20’s was an era of tumultuous upheaval in Russia with revolutions, civil war and non-stop Cake Parties. Despite this situation, what would become the Soviet Union established a trailblazing public health system (The GTO) that ‘encouraged’ athletic participation. Results were recorded, quantified and measured against the results of other groups as a way of formalizing, or manufacturing, the New Soviet Man (Homo Sovieticus). This program became so ‘popular’ that professionalism and world-class finishes were attached to the model in the 1950’s (part 2) allowing the Soviets to dominate international competition for the next 4 decades; even being exported to the satellite states and emulated by the West to such an extent that “modern athletics” is very Soviet. We wrap up by hearing another track from Oceanpath, this one is aptly named The Puppet Show. Thanks again to Kristaps from the Eastern Border Podcast for joining me in the deep dive, did you know he also fences?!? Thanks to Uncle Gundars for sharing your stories and to Oceanpath for the fiery tunes that went so well with these episodes. Statistics show that since 2015 there has been a dramatic surge in the number of random national holidays, rose wine consumption, and over the top gender reveal parties. Shocking trends like these had Christie and Nicole asking themselves the age old question, "When did this become a thing?" Armed with very little research and mostly their own personal thoughts and feelings, the Dynamic Duo set out to understand when things like Pinterest crafts, nitro cold brew, and being vegan became the norm. Along the way the ladies discover that they are definitely on board with some of these trends, while others get a hard pass in their book. We invite you to take this journey with us and want to hear what you think!Update: National Day to be Underwhelmed falls on the first Saturday of October and will be celebrated in conjunction with our One Year Anniversary Live Podcast and Celebration on October 6, 2018 in Baltimore, MD. On this episode, Phil sits down with Sean McGuire, the creator and host of the Share A Slice Podcast. In the first part, Sean tell us about his podcast, atheism and what it’s like talking with people from all walks of life. We get to hear a few of Sean’s stories about talking with the head of an UFO religion, sex workers, drag queens, and someone who prefers to pee and poop in her tent. Who are we to judge?! In the second part of our chat we dig into the notions of countercultures and subcultures and wonder if they hold revolutionary potential. Should everyone be involved in subcultural experiences? Maybe countercultures aren’t for everyone. Is the intention of counterculture to affect change, or simply to have a non-mainstream lifestyle? It’s an episode all about sharing stories and sharing a slice of life. If you enjoyed our chat, make sure to subscribe, rate and review Sean’s podcast. Also, follow Share A Slice on Twitter @SlicesPodcast and on Facebook @ShareASlicePodcast and on Instagram @ShareASlicePodcast. We thank Katreese Barnes for the music on this episode. Katreese is a music director, composer, producer, arranger, pianist, vocalist & saxophonist. If you don’t know Katreese Barnes by name, you certainly know her music. Two time Emmy award winner, a Grammy nominated pianist, producer and composer, Katreese has been a hidden hand at orchestrating some of our cherished cultural sounds. Katreese is currently working on Welcome 2 My House, a live streamed internet show that she created and where she surprises people in their living rooms with their favorite artist singing their favorite song. Before speaking about the changes to social services we need to understand why Melisha was placed back with her parents. Melisha Gibson’s stepfather abused her severely at 11 months old and she lived for more than three years in a foster family with whom she had a deep bond. Foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins considered Melisha, or Missy as she was called, and inquired about adopting her. Ronnie and Wanda Maddux wanted their children returned, however and over the course of months, one-by-one the state returned all of the children, placing Missy there last. Why? Why did social services in the US hold reunification of the family as so important? And since it was so important, why didn’t social services provide more resources or require treatment that would have given a family placement more chance at success? Sara sits down to interview Josh Hallmark, the creator behind the Our Americana podcast. They talk about how Josh’s motivation to create the podcast came from a desire to break down molds and stereotypes that he himself has. Two months after the Maddux’s trial ended, Judge Witt said,"These people got the fairest trial they could get. I don't care where you try this case; you can try it in Hong Kong, you can try it in the Alps' Mountains, you can try it on the banks of the Nile; you're going to get the same verdict." In this episode we’ll discuss the verdict and the legal aftermath for Wanda and Ronald Maddux. When Wanda Maddux took the stand to testify in her own defense, she told the jury that the day before her daughter died her husband, Ronnie, "acted plumb wild. He's been mean before, but I've never seen him that bad." Will Wanda be able to convince the jury that Ronald Maddux was a batterer who targeted Melisha for abuse without her consent or approval? At times, our furry friends bring us joy, pleasure and happiness. Their company is valued, and they too are valued members of our homes. Other times, they bring us closer to understanding why not sweating the small stuff is an important life lesson. As humans we think we have the benefit of being intelligent and rational. But are we alone in that regard? From the social sciences, humanities and art comes an episode full of love for all species. We are joined by the creator of The Species Podcast, Macken Murphy, to discuss his show, his views on veganism, and the intersection of science and the animal kingdom. We are then joined by Tracy for our first round-table discussion. It gets heated as we discuss the merits of cloning, banning certain breeds of dogs, and which species make good house pets (Hint: It’s most definitely not polar bears!). We thank Michael Harren, a Brooklyn-based composer and performer for letting us play his music on this episode. Michael combines elements of classical composition with experimental electronics and storytelling, to create hypnotic and boldly intimate work that walks the line between Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel and Dead Can Dance. Stepfather Ronnie Maddux testified that Wanda and his older stepdaughters were the ones to abuse Melisha. He revealed Wanda told him that Melisha "doesn't love you." Could this be why Melisha died? I really, really didn't think I would ever get this episode out to you all. Like, really. First of all, it's the result of a crossover with Billy & Erica, from Martinis and the Macabre, and I was so freaking fangirl-y the whole time that I wasn't sure I'd say a thing that made sense. Then, there's the fact that I'm still crap at the whole sound editing thing, so this is the best I could do. THEN, while I was in the process of trying to edit it in time to coincide with their release, my brain decided to explode. No, like, literally, I started feeling really, really unwell, so I made it up two flights of stairs just in time to let my husband know that I was feeling Really Gross, and I dropped with a grand mal seizure. Yeah. So I can't re-narrate any of my stuff, because I bit my tongue bad enough that, five days later, I still don't have SSSS-sounds. Or a bunch of others. So. Please, please enjoy this. Please think it's interesting. Because I like it, well enough to hit publish. And, for more of the conversation you hear here, check out Martinis & the Macabre: Episode 36 -- Richard Chasin' Walkin' Tacos.Promos are for MAUL and for Based on a True Crime. Queen Simone starts by sharing the awesome news of being featured in 2 Pods A Day, which helps expose others to independent podcasts! The theme for this week in travel news is “don’t do stupid stuff while traveling.” She features three news stories that will make you shake your head. Her tip for the week stems from a traumatic germ-ridden experience (and after hearing her story and what researchers say, you’ll think twice about using that seat back pocket). She answers a question on how to unclog your ears after flying. 2 Pods A Day on twitter: @2PodsADay or http://www.our-americana.com/2podsaday/ Avoid the Seat Back Pockets on Planes: https://www.livescience.com/45734-airplane-germs-mrsa-ecoli.html Tips for Unclogging Your Ears: http://amp.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/yoga-wellness/how-to-prevent-clogged-ears-and-unclog-ears-after-flight ************************ How to find Queen Simone: Instagram & Twitter: @travelquips Her Blog: www.travelquips.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/TravelQuips ************************ Do you have a travel related question that you would like Queen Simone to answer? Before the Maddux murder trial began Judge Witt asked one of the attorneys a question in open court, "Don't you realize that everyone, no matter how low and how despicable, has a right to be represented by an attorney?" This question was widely published in newspapers, and sets the tone for the trial that was about to begin. The Madduxes were low and despicable and while they had a right to a trial, it was really a formality to endure before the inevitable prison sentence occurred. website: www.targetedpodcast.com email: targetedpodcast@gmail.com Twitter: @targetedpodcast #2podsADay: http://www.our-americana.com/2podsaday/ The Punnery: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-punnery/id1243263910?mt=2
The new man. Why is it that men feel embarrased to talk about taking care of themselves? Whether it is skin, hair, sense of smell, or nail care, men are afraid to admit that they care about the aspects of hygiene and go to great lengths to take care of themselves. On this episode we delve into how your smell will stay with people forever, if manicures and pedicures should be on the list, and the weirdness that is the "just for men" craze in the cosmetics industry. The public pressure was intense surrounding Ronald and Wanda Maddux’s guilt of murdering their 4-year-old daughter, Melisha Gibson. Petitions and protests called for the Madduxes to be put to death. Country music star Hank Snow even wrote TN Govenor Ray Blanton demanding the death penalty for anyone convicted of child abuse. I tend to think of the road to a trial being an ordered and logical progression from arrest to arraignment to trial. The road to a trial should be well-marked and driven upon with caution. But it seems to me as if the typical slow and steady drive on the road to a trial didn’t happen. It was more like this case was hijacked by a bunch of teens delivering bootleg moonshine, careening through the Appalachian mountains with the acceleration pedal firmly stomped to the floor. #2podsADay: http://www.our-americana.com/2podsaday/ website: www.targetedpodcast.com email: targetedpodcast@gmail.com Twitter: @targetedpodcast
Traffic. The bane of everyone's existence. We have all been in traffic, driven around, under, over, by, or through it. We all have different ways of dealing with it but all can agree that it is hated. So why do we still have traffic? On this episode we talk about teaching practices and the idea that social media has a place in the classroom. We discuss our views of pedagogy (the art, science, and even craft of teaching), classroom power and dynamics between educators and students, and the politics of education. Why aren’t educators turning to social media in the classroom? Can social media result in more classroom engagement, exposure to our social world, and, even, democratize the learning process? It’s ambitious. But is it totally out of the realm of the possible? We tend to think not. For an example of some of the practical benefits, as well as the challenges, of using social media in the classroom see: https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1186%2Fs41239-017-0041-6.pdf We thank Gabrielle Giguere, singer, songwriter, artist extraordinaire, and all-around great person, for letting us play some tracks off of Her Harbour’s album ‘Go Gently Into The Night’. Guest co-host Anthony Von Dessauer, creator of the popular podcast The Curse of Silverlake, joins Phil to discuss music preservation, art, the potential impacts of technology, and the stratified character of our society. How art gets commercially made and distributed is a contested domain. Luckily for us avid music lovers, an Archive.org project seeks to digitize and democratize some of the greatest music ever made. Join us as we explore the fuzzy boundaries of who produces, who consumes, and who profits when art becomes more widely available. Somehow we managed to also talk about driverless trucks, peeing in a bottle, and a fantastic metal band Cyborg Octopus. We intended to talk about a 78rpm record project, we swear. This week we deep dive into the world of resilience. From Francis Bacon’s musings of how sound bounces off walls, to the proposal that colouring can help block the nasty world around us: we explore the etymology, the history, and some implications of the resilience turn. Even our game of ‘What Do You Hate More’ was (unintentionally) inspired by the notions of risk, vulnerability, and recovery. So do what you do, ‘cuz we’re all just trying to cope. The book Phil mentioned is titled ‘The Resilience Divident: Being Strong in a World Where Things Go Wrong’ by Judith Rosin: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23545528-the-resilience-dividend We thank Bonjay for kindly allowing us to play their songs: Ingenue, Stumble, Creepin, Shotta. We get all up in the art on this episode. Matt visited the National Art Gallery in beautiful Ottawa, ON. We get a walkthrough, you get one of our most cynical takes yet. From First Nations, Métis & Cree artwork, to the paintings of the iconic group of seven, we just can’t wrap our heads around the colonial couplings found in the gallery. Luckily, Emily Carr saved us from total despair. That is, until we try to make sense of postmodern art. It’s like finding lost money in your jacket pocket: confusing. Really confusing. To follow along as we dissect some art, check-out the pics Matt took while on his tour: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1j_AY8KzuF8S5u1rruQovVQsuA-Gl1s2T?usp=sharing We thank Evil Can Evil for kindly allowing us to play their songs: Winter Rider, Power, Love & Hate, and I’m Alive. Blues filtered through a 1970s' distortion, with a hint of 1960s' rock. A voice full of blues and smoke. Drums that smash the permafrost. A bass that moves snowdrifts. Guitars that lash stronger than a boreal wind. The strength of the North, with the soul of blues and the energy of rock. Evil Can Evil, the nordic rock's ambassadors. Evil Can Evil is a Quebec City quartet founded in 2007. The band is made up of: JF, vocalist and guitarist, Math, drummer, Manuel, bassist and Seb, rhythm guitar. Through stories of dangerous women, broken hearts, identity crises, territorial dispossession and courageous snow plows, Evil Can Evil builds a universe breathing a new life into the tired stoner rock genre. Stoner rock is dead, hail nordic rock. If Evil Can Evil doesn't make you want to dance, then you're more frozen than a mammoth prisoner of the Siberian soil. In this episode we offer up our resolutions and predictions for 2018. Matt is determined to make this year his most focused ever and Phil doesn’t think the world will end, yet. With a heartfelt round of confessions, we agree that being warm is worse than cold. Typical. We decided to end things with a long overdue round of thank-you’s to all those who have graced us with iTunes and Facebook reviews. Kicking off the year sayin’, Thanks! We thank David Wagner for kindly allowing us to play a few songs. Computer Hash is the brainchild of David from the tiny town of Fenwick, Michigan. Computer Hash creates techno and experimental electronic music littered with a variety of original audio samples recorded on cassette tape, many over a decade ago. Most of these audio samples are from various parties that David attended with cassette recorder in hand, ready to capture interesting drunken rants for future use in music. Recently, David has been working to promote and create new music under the Computer Hash umbrella. You can find Computer Hash on: Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/user-629368065 | Facebook https://www.facebook.com/computerhash/ We ended the show with “All Kinds of Crazy” by Codie Prevost. Codie is a four time Canadian Country Music Association nominee and a six time Saskatchewan Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year winner. The Nightbirds are back! As chance would have it they're in a new world for a new year with all new bodies and a quest where the stakes are the souls of others. All this is leavened by Skumk very quickly adjusting to the new body, Jelly disregarding her friend's safety, and Coen wrassling a dragon. Also we're participating in a cool campaign! In 1966, the Beatles played their friend Klaus Voorman their song “Tomorrow Never Knows” while Voorman went to work sketching what would become the cover to the band's next album, which I referenced in The Story Behind Imagine (by John Lennon). This album contained the songs “Taxman,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Good Day, Sunshine,” and was almost called After Geography. This suggestion was Ringo Starr's idea of a pun based on the Rolling Stones releasing Aftermath. Get it? After-geography? After-math? Like a high school schedule. Luckily, the band went with a very to-the-point title that referenced what the record, itself, does when being played. But that's neither Here, There or Everywhere when it comes to the game and movie Clue. We're here to talk about the weapon used for MURDER. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind The Revolver. The Clue Series Butler you heard at the beginning of the episode was played by Paul from Rick and Paul Heal the World. And now, I present your host. The weapon we're talking about in this episode is probably the most ubiquitous of the Clue weapons. Did you ever wonder why it's tradition to blow out candles on your birthday? It actually goes back to the Ancient Greeks and burning candles in religious ceremonies, including to pay tribute to the goddess Artemis who is associated with the moon. They baked cakes to symbolize the shape of the moon and added candles to represent moonlight. Though cakes are delicious, they can't really be used as a weapon for MURDER. But another candleholder can ... I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind The Candlestick. This episode's Clue weapon is depicted in the game by a bent metal tube, probably bent because of the force one would need to actually kill someone with that weapon. And, even if it's not being used for MURDER, the material it's made out of certainly has caused its share of health problems. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind The Lead Pipe. The Clue Series Butler you heard at the beginning of the episode was played by Paul from Rick and Paul Heal the World. Mr. Green imitations provided by Robin from the podcast The Trail Went Cold and Scott from the podcast Recovering from Religion. The role of Vitruvius was played by Jeremy Collins from the Facebook group and podcast Podcasts We Listen To. Join The Story Behind Discussion Group on Facebook!
