Content Warning: rape, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Marlee Liss is a survivor,award-winning speaker, victim advocate, somatic educator, and author from Toronto, Canada. She grew up in the arts, but pivoted to social work when she began her college career. It was in Marlee's junior year when her life changed forever; she became the victim of a sexual assault and entered an arduous journey in the criminal justice system as a result. However, three years into that battle for justice, Marlee found an additional path: restorative justice. According to Walden University, quote “Punitive justice is the idea of punishing criminals for their crimes against society or the legal system itself, and is the traditional method of handling crime in the United States. Restorative justice seeks to bring victims of crimes into the justice process. Criminals are asked to take accountability for their wrongdoing by facing those they have wronged... The theory is that criminals owe more than a debt to society—they owe a debt to specific people,” end quote. The two processes are not always mutually exclusive. It's important to note that criminal justice can occur tandemly with restorative justice practices. The Broken Cycle Media team is so very grateful for Marlee's powerful perspective advocacy and time and energy in sharing in this episode. When the Toronto Blue Jays went on their miracle postseason run that landed them just two outs shy of winning the World Series, very few believed they'd be in that position during the regular season. ShownotesTalking about grief brings mixed emotions. Some avoid it whereas others fully embrace it. Our guest this week is a strong believer that pain needs to be witnessed, that vulnerability is essential to being loved and loving another, and that the only way to deal with pain (and consequently grief) is to immerse oneself in the trenches of it.Carina Fraser is a Catholic widow, mother, artist, and author. At 28 years old she lost five children in miscarriages, as well as her husband in a ten month span. Her grief prompted her to start an Instagram page called @thatCatholicwidow, which she uses as a way to work through much of her loss and give words to thoughts and feelings that can often be ignored. Now two years later Carina continues to use her faith and her grief to bring beauty and comfort to those around her. Recorded live at the Coffee Association of Canada Annual Conference, this special edition of The Food Professor Podcast with Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois brews up a rich conversation on the state of Canada's food economy, the coffee industry's shifting landscape, and the global forces shaping what Canadians eat and drink live on the stage. The episode opens with Michael and Sylvain diving into the latest geopolitical tensions influencing trade and agriculture. From Washington to Mexico City, Sylvain shares insights from his travels and firsthand discussions with U.S. policy insiders and Latin American producers. The conversation highlights how Canada's trading partners are adapting quickly, especially Mexico's resilience and growing potential as a key agri-food ally in the hemisphere. The professors then turn to an annual highlight — an early look at the 2026 Canada Food Price Report, compiled by a network of ten universities using AI-powered forecasting. Sylvain hints at tough times ahead for consumers, forecasting that meat and poultry prices could rise by as much as 25% in the months ahead, putting pressure on Canadian households. He connects this to the emerging “protein play” trend, where consumers are seeking protein in unconventional forms — including fortified beverages like coffee. While acknowledging the opportunity, he cautions that nutritionists are warning against over-fortification, signaling that balance and consumer education will be key.The discussion then flows into GLP-1 drugs and their growing impact on food demand. As consumers change their eating patterns, Sylvain warns that Big Pharma's gains may translate into Big Food's challenges — though innovation and reformulation could open new opportunities. From AI-enabled efficiency to personalized nutrition, the professors explore how food and beverage brands must adapt to new consumption realities.Rounding out the first half, they discuss the “Battle for the Third Place” — how coffee shops are redefining the space between home and work post-COVID. Sylvain urges operators to double down on human connection and service excellence, even as automation and rising wages push toward efficiency. In the second half, guest Doug Porter, Chief Economist at BMO, unpacks Canada's economic outlook. Porter delivers a grounded view of growth, inflation, immigration, and consumer spending, labeling the new federal budget “boring — and that's a good thing.” He weighs in on labour shortages, immigration reform, the “K-shaped” economy, and AI's role in reshaping productivity, closing with optimism that innovation and adaptation — not fear — will guide Canada's next decade. More To The Story: Jason Stanley isn't afraid to use the F-word when talking about President Donald Trump. The author of How Fascism Works and Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future is clear: He believes the United States is currently under an authoritarian regime led by a fascist leader. At a time when the Trump administration is putting increasing pressure on private and public universities to conform or lose funding, Stanley recently left his position at Yale University and moved his family to Canada, where he's now the Bissell-Heyd chair in American studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. The move, he says, has allowed him to talk about the US in a way that wouldn't have been possible if he remained in the country. On this week's More To The Story, Stanley traces the recent rise of fascist regimes around the globe, and explains why he describes what's happening in the US today as a “coup” and why he thinks the speed and scope of the Trump administration's hardline policies could ultimately lead to significant pushback from those opposed to the president.Producer: Josh Sanburn | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Copy editor: Nikki Frick |  Digital producer: Artis Curiskis | Deputy executive producer: Taki Telonidis | Executive producer: Brett Myers | Executive editor: James West | Host: Al Letson Donate today at Revealnews.org/more Subscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weekly Follow us on Instagram and Bluesky Read: He Studies Fascism: Is He Now Living Through It? The Bengals defense is so bad that fans are actually starting to turn on Joe Burrow, all because Joe Flacco is balling out. We talk about how fast Cincinnati could turn Burrow into the next Carson Palmer if this keeps up. Mookie hijacks the show more than once, first by traumatizing everyone while breaking down Jayden Daniels' injury, then by repeatedly forcing in his NCAA Dynasty highlights and replaying ScottSki45's stat of the day. Tom Brady casually dropped that his new dog is a clone of the one he had with Gisele, the NFL Trade Deadline was a dud, and the first College Football Playoff poll dropped while we were live. Auburn tipped off Hugh Freeze's firing by canceling his usual Sunday tee time. Meanwhile, college programs have now passed $1 billion in coach buyouts since the CFP started...and Congress is talking about salary caps. Then we dive into the World Series: one of the best we've seen? We debate the defining moment: • Ground rule double in Game 6 • Rojas to Smith at the plate • Pages crashing into Hernandez for the catch to force extras Plus Sip/Chug/Drainpour for the worst series-losing moments ever, the fan who brought a spare ball to fake a throwback and now wants $2.5M for a pair of Game 7 homers, college basketball is back, a women's player goes viral for point 67, flopped injury dunks, and more chaos to close it out.
