The Panama Canal: The real story behind the engineering triumph

Completed in 1914, the Panama Canal has long been regarded as a triumph of American ingenuity, a conquest over nature that helped secure the United States' position as a world power. Taking ten years to build, it opened up new trading routes between East and West by providing a vital waterway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. But what was the real story behind this challenging engineering project? How were the Panamanians affected? Who were the tens of thousands of workers who built the canal? And what was the environmental impact of work that literally cut through a mountain and redirected two oceans? And with climate change, will the Panama Canal be such a vital waterway in the future? Joining Bridget Kendall, is the Panamanian academic Dr Marixa Lasso, author of “Erased: The Untold Story of the Panama Canal”, the first major book on the Canal from the Panamanian point of view; Julie Greene, Professor of History at the University of Maryland, and the author of “The Canal Builders: Making America's Empire at the Panama Canal”, and Paul Sutter, Professor of Environmental History at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and author of a forthcoming book on the impact of US public health measures during the construction of the Panama Canal. Not only has there been a lull in campaign events, there was not much campaign finance activity in Albemarle or Charlottesville. Reports for activity between May 28 and June 30 were due yesterday to the Virginia Department of Elections. They have been made available through the Virginia Public Access Project. Democrat Juandiego Wade began the period with a balance of $32,626 and raised an additional $1,015 in cash over that time. He spent $28,381 during the reporting period with $18,000 spent on Liveview Marketing and $2,350 in advertising with the Daily Progress. Wade finished the money with a balance of $5,259. Democrat Brian Pinkston began the month with a balance of $14,152 on hand, and raised an additional $850 in additional funds including $500 in a loan from himself. He spent $12,701 during the period, including the repayment of $9,922 in loans to himself. Pinkston concluded the period with a balance of $2,301. The two independents in the race did not report any fundraising. Incumbent Nikuyah Walker filed a report that stated a campaign balance of $90 with no expenditures or receipts. There is no report yet in the Virginia Department of Elections database from challenger . None of the races for Albemarle County Supervisor are contested this year, but new reports are available all the same from the three candidate. Incumbent Jack Jouett District Supervisor Diantha McKeel raised an additional $500 and reported no spending, bringing her balance to $32,556. Incumbent Rio District Supervisor Ned Gallaway reported no fundraising or spending, and has a balance of $15,809. In the open Samuel Miller seat, Newcomer Jim Andrews raised $2,001 in cash and spent $3,190 in the period, leaving a balance of $29,317. No write-in candidates filed a report.  There are four General Assembly races of note in the area. The 25th House District includes part of western Albemarle County. Incumbent Republican Chris Runion began the period with $44,960, raised $13,235, and spent $2,566, leaving a balance of $55,628. Democratic challenger Jennifer Kitchen began the period with $78,249. She raised $29,834, with cash contributions from nearly 600 individuals or entities. Kitchen spent $24,524 and had a end-of-period balance of $83,558.The 57th House District case is contested. Incumbent Democrat Sally Hudson began the period with a balance of $52,254, raised $1,348, and spent $10,742. Her opponent is Republican Philip Hamilton, who began the period with a balance of $1,179 on May 28. Hamilton raised $150 in cash, spent $990, and had a balance of $338 on June 30.In the 58th House District, Incumbent Republican Rob Bell began the period with $264,965 and raised an additional $20,565, spent $3,935, and had a balance of $281,594 on June 30. Challenger Sara Ratcliffe began the period with $2,804, raised $5,532 including $3,002 in loans, and and spent $1,108. The 59th House District includes a portion of southwestern Albemarle and the Republican incumbent is Matt Fariss. Fariss began this reporting period with $12,846 on May 28 and raised $24,120 from 60 individuals or entities. He spent $5,628 in the period and had a balance of $31,338. His Democratic challenger, Ben Moses, began the period with a balance of $130,216 and raised $56,985 in the period with cash coming from 141 individuals or entities. He spent $29,627 and ended the period with a balance of $157,248. Independent Louis Scicli reported no money during the period. Races in the Virginia Senate are not until 2023. *Another roundabout is coming to another corner of Albemarle County. Construction will get underway next week at the intersection of Stony Point Road and Proffit Road for the project, which was funded in the second round of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Smart Scale process in 2017. In order to save money and attract efficiencies, VDOT opted to bundle that project with several others into a single $28.5 million design-build contract that was eventually awarded to Curtis Contracting. Completed projects include a traffic light on U.S. 29 at Interstate 64’s Exit 118 and the Rio Mills Connector Road that opened in June. A conversion of the junction of I-64 and U.S. 250 at Exit 124 is underway, and a roundabout at Route 151 and U.S. 250 southwest of Crozet will begin construction later this summer. (more information)Construction phasing documents for the project (Credit: Virginia Department of Transportation)Today, two segments that make up half of a recap of the Charlottesville Planning Commission meeting from earlier this week. There was a lot of activity and it is all worth documenting. First, the meeting began with announcements. First up was Bill Palmer, the non-voting representative from the University of Virginia’s Office of the Architect. Another office building from the 20th century is coming down. “The demolition of the Dynamics building over at the Emmet/Ivy corridor is underway and a lot of the utility enabling seems to have started over there so that project to enable the Data Science institute as well as the conference center and hotel that we’re building over there so that’s finally getting underway after lots and lots of planning,” Palmer said. The Dynamics building will be demolished. Where will the materials go? (Credit: Charlottesville GIS) Planning Commission Chair Hosea Mitchell serves on the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. He told his colleagues and the public that the Onesty Family Aquatic Center will not open this summer.“The reason is we just can’t get enough lifeguards to support all of the parks we’ve got,” Mitchell said. “This is not unique to Charlottesville. This seems to be a nationwide problem that we just can’t get the lifeguards.” In the first item of business, the Commission considered a rezoning and special use permit for a vacant lot currently zoned R-2, which would allow two units on the property.“The requested rezoning would be to R-3, residential multifamily medium density,” Mitchell said. “And then the following special use permit would then allow the applicant to build eight units.”A similar application went before Commission and the Council in 2018 and was denied by Council in October that year. As part of this application, eight parking spaces would be provided on site. Here’s Matt Alfele, a city planner. “Residents are concerned that the code-required eight parking spaces will not be enough for this development and the overflow parking will impact the surrounding neighborhoods, especially the homes on Chestnut Street,” Alfele said. One change since 2018 involves how vehicles will get in and out of the site. Justin Shimp is the engineer on behalf of MSC. “We have worked with the traffic engineer and we have a one-way entrance off of Carlton because that is a narrow street and the one-way entrance is a safe entrance and we exit out the alley, so there’s no traffic concerns,” Shimp said. Shimp said the rezoning was consistent with the city’s desire to build more housing units.“The reality is that if you look at the goals that are stated for the city in terms of providing housing to folks who take alternate means of transportation, and how to deal with climate change and other issues we face, these sort of in-fill projects are an excellent way to achieve those goals,” Shimp said. Though not a representative of the rental company that would manage the units, Shimp said the one bedroom units would be rented between $1,100 and $1,200, and the two-bedroom unit would be around $1,500. None of the units are being subsidized and will not be proffered to keep them below market.  The situation may be different in the future when the Comprehensive Plan is adopted and the zoning ordinance is rewritten. Lisa Robertson is the city attorney.“What we’re all waiting for so anxiously is a zoning ordinance that can have regulations that say if we’re going to require a certain amount of affordable housing for every development of a specific size, we want to be right upfront about what that means and what the paperwork that’s going to be required over the course of the affordability period will be,” Robertson said. Several residents of the immediate neighborhood asked for the rezoning to be denied or for more parking to be required. Another Belmont resident said there should not be more parking.“I have to say I’m a little dismayed by the number of my neighbors who want more car storage here,” Gold said. “This is a really solid location for car-free living.”This time around, the Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval of both the special use permit for more density and the rezoning. It goes next to City Council at a future meeting. The cover of the applicant’s concept plan (download the full PC packet)In today’s second Patreon-fueled shout-out is for the Plant Northern Piedmont Natives Campaign, an initiative that wants you to grow native plants in yards, farms, public spaces and gardens in the northern Piedmont. Native plants provide habitat, food sources for wildlife, ecosystem resiliency in the face of climate change, and clean water.  Start at the Plant Northern Piedmont Natives Facebook page and tell them Lonnie Murray sent you! Next, the Commission was asked to weigh in on whether Charlottesville should give up public right-of-way between East High Street and Meriwether Street in the Little High Street area. This is what is known as a “paper street” because most of the land dedicated to the city for a road was built upon. Tony Edwards is the Development Services Manager in the city’s Department of Public works. “This subject street was created in 1940 with a subdivision plat that established the Little High neighborhood,” Edwards said. “The 1940 subdivision created a new Lewis Street.”The original play for the Little High Street neighborhoodAn adjacent landowner has asked for the city to give up the right of way in order to avoid a cut-through street from ever being built to the Little High neighborhood. Another nearby landowner asked that an existing gravel path be turned into a formal city trail for bikes and pedestrians.“It was determined that the existing gravel path actually veers outside of the platted right of way of 13th Northeast over the yard of a private residence and a busy parking lot,” Edwards said. “Staff at that time was also of the opinion that establishing a bike and pedestrian connection within the platted right of way would be difficult and expensive.”Nonetheless, city staff recommended not vacating and closing the right of way in part to preserve the possibility of meeting future transportation needs. The applicant for the street closure said one reason for the request is because the amount of developable property on the parcel he manages is less than it should be because of differing building setback rules when there’s an adjacent street - real or paper. In this case, twenty feet versus fifteen. “If you take 20 feet away from the property line, basically, it removes all of that property from utility,” said Roy Van Doorn, the manager of the LLC that owns 1140 East High Street. Van Doorn said a connector road would overwhelm the Little High neighborhood. Under his proposal, there would be more parking for uses on East High Street and he would fix drainage issues. He made this offer on behalf of himself and neighboring properties. “I made a proposal and its on the table that we as property owners around this section would put in a 12-foot wide gravel connector so that bikes and pedestrians could walk in that area,” Van Doorn said. If the city were to work out an arrangement for that land to be dedicated to public use, that connector would need to be built to standards according to traffic engineer Brennen Duncan.“It wouldn’t necessarily have to be built to the full roadway standards but it would have to be built to [Americans with  Disabilities Act] or bicycle-trail standards,” Duncan said. The specific question before the Commission was whether vacating the street conformed with the Comprehensive Plan. Commissioner Jody Lahendro said no.“I don’t like the idea of forfeiting the city from the future possibility of doing something,” Lahendro said. Commission Lyle Solla-Yates said he support thinking about the issue more while an arrangement is worked out to use the right of way for non-motorized modes of travel. Van Doorn had sent over his compromise proposal on Monday, which was not enough time for the Planning Commission to get a staff report on the idea. Van Doorn requested a deferral to work through the details of how to make the connector trail work.“Owning the land for us is not that important,” Van Doorn said. “What is important is that the Little High Street neighborhood has a way to utilize connectivity but not automobile,” Van Doorn said. Will this come to pass? Completed in 1938, the Trans-Iranian Railway connected Tehran to Iran's two major bodies of water: the Caspian Sea in the north and the Persian Gulf in the south. Iran's first national railway, it produced and disrupted various kinds of movement—voluntary and forced, intended and unintended, on different scales and in different directions—among Iranian diplomats, tribesmen, migrant laborers, technocrats, railway workers, tourists and pilgrims, as well as European imperial officials alike. Iran in Motion: Mobility, Space, and the Trans-Iranian Railway (Stanford UP, 2021) tells the hitherto unexplored stories of these individuals as they experienced new levels of mobility. Drawing on newspapers, industry publications, travelogues, and memoirs, as well as American, British, Danish, and Iranian archival materials, Mikiya Koyagi traces contested imaginations and practices of mobility from the conception of a trans-Iranian railway project during the nineteenth-century global transport revolution to its early years of operation on the eve of Iran's oil nationalization movement in the 1950s. Weaving together various individual experiences, this book considers how the infrastructural megaproject reoriented the flows of people and goods. In so doing, the railway project simultaneously brought the provinces closer to Tehran and pulled them away from it, thereby constantly reshaping local, national, and transnational experiences of space among mobile individuals. Jesus, Your Pioneering Older Brother -Hebrews 2:10-13

Cornerstone Bible Church

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2021

Hebrews 2:10-13 “Jesus, Your Perfect Older Brother” Jesus became lower than the angels to bring salvation for us. And in bringing salvation he made us his brothers and sisters. This is tightly connected to the Old Testament concepts of salvation and God’s deliverance as we will see. But this section focusing on the humanity of Jesus shows him as your brother. The comfort of having a big brother in your corner. On your side. A big brother who isn’t ashamed of you. Who protects you… and who brings you to where you need to be. Jesus is your big brother, spiritually speaking. And it so wonderful. The passage may be divided into an introduction, which speaks of the appropriateness of the Son’s suffering within the divine purposes (v. 10), the Son’s solidarity with the sons and daughters (vv. 11-13), the reasons for his incarnation (vv. 14-16), and a conclusion that speaks of Jesus becoming an effective high priest (vv. 17-18).1 Hebrews 2 (ESV) 5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. It was proper that He… the He from whom and by whom all things exist is the Father. 1 Corinthians 8:6 (ESV) yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. It is proper that God the Father should make perfect… that’s the point of emphasis here God is the cause. The director. The one who designed the plan and implemented the plan… 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Why was this a good plan to humiliate the Lord of glory and to make him suffer? We know it was to accomplish our salvation. It was to rescue us from the consequences of our sin. In this context, it is connected to what we saw last week, which is the restoration of creation. The idea that Jesus comes to make right all that went wrong in Adam. Jesus will restore mankind’s dignity and dominion over the creation. Our writer says here: in bringing many sons to glory This is why Jesus tasted death for everyone (v. 9)… This is your ultimate destiny. It’s what you were created for. Not the glory of creation, but the glory of the creator. The enjoyment and magnification of the creator. For the one who is before all things and in whom all things come together. God’s salvation work is in our behalf, but it is not anthropocentric (man-centered) by theocentric (God-centered). We share in his glory, but it is ultimately about him. Isaiah 60:19 (ESV) The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Romans 2:7 (ESV) to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; Romans 5:2 (ESV) Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. You and I were created for glory—and expression of God’s glory in creation. And in the fall that glory was diminished and marred by sin. But God gets what he wants and he will get glory now through the redemption of sinners. It was fitting… it was only right and appropriate that what was originally designed would be recovered. Eternity, with God, forever and ever in glory. This is your orientation now in life… deferring hope to the life to come. many sons Some translations make this sons and daughters. Or people will say, “daughters of the king”—it kind of misses the point here. That’s true. 2 Corinthians 6:18 (ESV) and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty. The analogous use of language. We are all sons—by that meaning that relationship between us and God is how a Father relates to a Son. It’s an analogy. God saves many men and many women and many boys and many girls. The focus here isn’t on age or gender, but on defining the relationship between us and God. Consider how God is a Father. God is our Father but he didn’t procreate us as an earthly Father. He doesn’t parent us identically to how an earthly father does. He isn’t married to a mother who is also God that brough us forth. God isn’t a male when we think of his biology as if he has a sexual expression. God isn’t analogous to a single-parent home where we are raised by our stay-at-home Father or absentee Father out in the workplace. Rather, we learn various characteristics about how God relates to us through the expression, through the analogy, of God as our Father. It is how God accommodates himself to our understanding. How do I want my people to view the way we relate to one another? We relate as a Father to a son. Likeness. Legal rights of the family inheritance. You were brought into sonship by the work of Jesus Christ, here designation as… founder of their salvation The founder. The originator. The initiator. The source. The author. Use three other times in the New Testament, always referring to Jesus.2 The best translation value for how this is being used is pioneer. He is the pioneer of their salvation. Trailblazers, pioneers—are the ones who go ahead into uncharted territory where there isn’t yet a path and way and makes it so that others can come along behind and reach the same destination. Pioneer provides implications beyond simply starting a process… a founder who gets the ball rolling. A pioneer is not only starting something, but starting something in behalf of and in relation to others. Richard Phillips writes: We follow a path blazed only by Jesus Christ, who leads us into the promised land of salvation and eternal life. He has gone where we could not go; by his own resources of righteousness and truth and an all-conquering life, he has opened up the way to heaven for us.3 You couldn’t get to God on your own efforts. You couldn’t navigate this life in sinless perfection. You were born in Adam. Jesus didn’t merely come to show us the way to God. He did show us the way to God. But after as he provided the way to God. John 14:2–4 (ESV) In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” No alternative trail. No alternative path. You can’t make it on your own. You can’t find a method of gaining John 14:6 (ESV) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. This connection of the pioneer of salvation indicates the sovereign work of God in saving his people. That he and he alone gets the credit. Salvation has always been God’s work and Jesus as pioneer of our salvation in the New Covenant, looks back to the salvation of YHWH in the Old Covenant. The same Lord who led Israel in the exodus, freeing them from Egypt, is leading his people to glory through Jesus Christ.4 Who led Israel out of Egypt? Moses certainly was the earthly leader. He was the head. He led the nation. He was replaced by Joshua. There was a clear leader, a clear chief over the nation. But who put Moses in that role? Who commissioned Moses from the flocks? Who equipped Moses with mighty wonders and signs? Who gave Moses the words on the teleprompter? Israel followed Moses, but who was Moses following? Moses was the deliverer, but he himself was only the earthly component. Exodus 3:7–10 (ESV) Then the LORD said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” Exodus 3:17 (ESV) and I promise that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.” ’ Exodus 6:6–7 (ESV) Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. Exodus 20:2 (ESV) I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. YHWH brought Israel up out of Egypt. YHWH authored and initiated and accomplished salvation for them. And now the writer of Hebrews picks up that theme, connecting it to Jesus. Israel was delivered by YHWH, we are delivered by Jesus. God led Israel out of a foreign land into the promised land of Canaan. Jesus leads us out of this cursed world and into the new heavens and the new earth, the ultimate promised land.5 What he did there was amazing. He took a nation that was under the thumb of the greatest superpower in the world at that time. And he brought that superpower, Egypt to her knees. He made it so that the leader, Pharoah was begging them to leave. And the people were not only saying, “good riddance…” but “here take my most valuable stuff with you when you go…” There was no battle. No bloodshed. Israel received deliverance from YHWH her God. And that was the pattern. That was to show what it was going to look like when deliverance came for not only Jews, but for the whole world. That was YHWH through Moses for one ethnic group. Now is God through Jesus for every tribe and tongue and people in his church. The same pattern. Now expanded. Elevated. He passed through the heavens and then says, trust me and I’ll bring you with me. perfect through suffering. We hear perfection and we think moral perfection. Spotless. Without defect. Without lack. Not imperfect, but perfect. And perfection could be understood in that way. It is used in Scripture in that way. But not here in Hebrews… in Hebrews here the author is not indicating Jesus lacked something morally that was made up for in suffering. He didn’t have a sin nature. He didn’t have any moral defects or moral incompleteness that needed suffering to make up for. He is the lamb without blemish or spot. Rather, we must understand this in light of the connections to the Old Testament. See, where this author is going is the identification of Jesus as our great high priest. Much of the arguments of the central part of the book relate to his priesthood. So, Jesus, was made perfect not in terms of moral improvement. But in being shown or proved to be qualified to serve as priest. Perfect or complete in the Old Testament was used of priests in conjunction with their consecration for the office. Was fully equipped for his office. God qualified Jesus to come before him in priestly action. He perfected him as a priest of his people through his sufferings, which permitted him to accomplish his redemptive mission.6 The writer of Hebrews here begins a theme that will dominate much of this book. Jesus, the true high priest to whom all the other pointed, offered his own life and gave his own blood to open the way for sinners to come to God.7 Think of it by way of analogy like this: Jesus deity alone isn’t what qualifies him to be a our substitute. It wasn’t just Jesus showing up as God incarnate and then dying. A stillborn Jesus couldn’t accomplish redemption. An adult Jesus slowing up couldn’t accomplish redemption. He had to be born under the law. He had to be born as a Jew. His family line, and yes even his DNA was traced back to Abraham. And not only born under the law, but he then had to obey under the law. He had to be circumcised on the eighth day according to custom. He had to fulfill every dimension of the law not only in the letter, but in the intent behind it. All ______ regulations. And so, it was his life as a man, which demonstrates and in one sense even qualifies him to serve in that role. Under the Mosaic covenant a priest would be ordained. He would go from at some point being a man who was not a priest to become a man who was a priest. We see a similar example of qualifications in the apostle Paul—he is saved on the road to Damascus and instantly called as an apostle of Jesus Christ… regeneration. He has a divine calling. He is equipped by Jesus himself. Intrinsically qualified. Yet in terms of his qualification to serve as an apostle alongside the others he had to go to Jerusalem first and spend time with the apostles. He had to submit his doctrine to them. He had to the credentials. Paul would even say, no one added anything to me… He wasn’t lacking prior to that. Yet it was still a necessary part of the qualification process. Furthermore, it was qualifying in the sense that he could say, “I’ve actually been there and done that.” He isn’t a human priest because he is the all-knowing God who looked upon creation and merely said, “I get it.” He wasn’t like the person is an expert in something that they really haven’t experienced yet. From time to time go out in the field to show some respect for the role… go jackhammer in the trench for 8-10 hours in the mid-90’s. Jesus didn’t just play sympathetic high priest by proxy. He became a man and lived on this earth so that he might be qualified to serve in this role. He suffered. Not just at Calvary. Surely at Calvary. The cross was the apex of all of the suffering of Jesus. But he suffered far beyond the cross. Slandered/misrepresented—good efforts called evil (loss of reputation… he does his miracles by Beelzebul) Misunderstood—crowds and even disciples asking… who is this? Ignored—stay awake and pray… don’t go tell anyone who healed you… Hated—many plotting to kill him because of intense hatred Disregarded—his own feeling Loneliness—no one who truly understood him… weeping over Jerusalem… a burden and a mission that he bore alone (even in the Garden the disciples weren’t engaged) Rejection—he came to his own and they did not receive him Exhaustion—marathon weeks, early mornings, pressed continuously by the crowds Sickness—not recorded, but happened to him… canceled plans, fever and chills and body aches Fear—cup in the Garden, even the threats of those who hated him Temptation—40 days without food… the temptation to have the glory without the cross Humiliation—taking on flesh was humiliating, getting his diaper changed, submitting to flawed parents, with his ultimate humiliation being the cross Separation from his Father—in his humanity he left heaven above Forsaken—forsake by all his friends and ultimately by his Father, “Why have you forsaken me…” Learning and acquiring knowledge— What did Isaiah say of him? Wonderful Counselor. When you meet the one who can identify with your struggle… Jesus was perfected through suffering And he comes through that equipped to meet our needs. The pioneer. Perfected in this role. Completed in this role. By his experience. Pre-requisite for being a priest is knowing God and knowing the human experience. Now he has both. He is able to help us and come to our aid in our suffering because he understands our constitution, our weakness. For it was fitting that he Entirely appropriate… this is the focus of this verse. The appropriateness. It is frontloaded in the original, the first position in the sentence. Of greatest significance and attention. Greco-Roman world this was incomprehensible… utterly shocking and inappropriate the idea that a deity, whom you worship experiences suffering—weakness and pain. The notion of a crucified Lord was a scandal to the first century world. Crucifixion was a public form of execution, and its cruelty was well known. For Jews, death by crucifixion meant a person was under the curse of God, while pagans protested that it was sheer madness.8 To the human, it’s inappropriate. Stone of beauty? Stone of easy acceptance? Stone of sweetness? Stone of offense. What is so offensive about the stone of Jesus? It’s the reproach of the cross. The natural man finds Jesus offensive. And an object of ridicule and scorn… “on the contrary, perfectly appropriate.” 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. Jesus is here the one who sanctifies. He doesn’t need to be sanctified, because he is the very essence of sanctity and the one to whom all the rest of us are to be set apart to. Jesus as the ever-obedient one didn’t need to be placed into the realm of the holy. He was always and ever the holy one and was dedicated to God throughout his life. Holiness is the defining characteristic of God’s people. He is holy, we are to be holy. How is it that we are made holy? Consecration and purification was a theme of the Old Testament. God is holy. You are not. Set apart what is common for special use. Consecration. Purification. How does this relate to perfection here? And the priesthood? A Christians unconcerned about personal holiness is a misnomer. Jesus is the savior and the sanctifier. One of the great goals of your sanctification. Ephesians 1:4 (ESV) even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love Romans 8:29 (ESV) For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. On the path to glory… We are called to trust and to obey. We are called to pursue sanctification by these means. Even commanded to be holy (be sanctified). Christian, be who you are. God tells you, who are his child to: 1 Peter 1:16 (ESV) since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” He set you apart when he saved you. Know you are to grab hold of that which is yours in Christ, by faith. Hebrews 12:14 (ESV) Strive … for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. This is what the Christian life is about—growth in holiness.9 Francis Schaeffer once defined the basic aspiration of people today, including evangelical Christians, as material affluence and enough personal peace to enjoy it. But what we see in this passage is something far greater, a higher and more wonderful destiny and calling. We are reborn in Christ as his fellow brothers and sisters for the glory that his in the heavenly realms, and the holiness that distinguishes God and his children.10 Sanctification is always by faith. We don’t possess the ability to sanctify ourselves. God does that. You do it because God is at work in you. Beware of those who diminish or make muddy this very simple and plain doctrine in Scripture. There are those who use the grace of God as a license to excuse fleshly indulgences. They are crafty. They are deceptive. They use compelling, articulate arguments. And they appeal to the flesh. Christ has secured your justification and now you are passive in sanctification. Misunderstand the Scriptures and God’s design for the believer. The distinction between justification and sanctification. Others would speak of sanctification and imply that it is just learning to do the right thing. Learning better habits. Trying to stop the bad things you do and do more good things apart from the resources God supplies. Ephesians 6 is clear—God provides all of the weaponry and the armor and strength. But you are called to put it on. So, when your sanctification wanes you are not to blame God for his lack of sanctifying work in your life, and when you pursue sanctification it is through the grace which he supplies. This is such a help. When you are weak and when you are failing, you trust he will sanctify his people. 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (ESV) For this is the will of God, your sanctification… And so, for Jesus here to be the sanctifier of his people is to connect him to YHWH in the Mosaic law. In the Old Testament sanctification is an activity regularly ascribed to God: so in the Pentateuch he identifies himself with the formula, ‘I am the Lord who sanctifies you’.134 Sometimes this sanctification of people is done through other agents, like Moses (Exod. 19:14; 29:1; Lev. 8:11-12).11 Leviticus 20:8 (ESV) Keep my statutes and do them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you. Leviticus 21:8 (ESV) You shall sanctify him, [the priest] for he offers the bread of your God. He shall be holy to you, for I, the LORD, who sanctify you, am holy. Leviticus 21:15 (ESV) that he may not profane his offspring among his people, for I am the LORD who sanctifies him.” Leviticus 21:23 (ESV) but he shall not go through the veil or approach the altar, because he has a blemish, that he may not profane my sanctuaries, for I am the LORD who sanctifies them.” Leviticus 22:9 (ESV) They shall therefore keep my charge, lest they bear sin for it and die thereby when they profane it: I am the LORD who sanctifies them. Leviticus 22:16 (ESV) and so cause them to bear iniquity and guilt, by eating their holy things: for I am the LORD who sanctifies them.” Leviticus 22:32 (ESV) And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the LORD who sanctifies you, Here’s what you are to do… follow the plan, obey my commandments in faith, and trust that I am the one who makes your working effectual. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. There is a qualitative difference between us… and yet a solidarity. Difference—he is sanctified, we are being sanctified. Similarity or solidarity—we have the same Father. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, The ones being sanctified, that’s the, “them…” If you are being sanctified, Jesus isn’t ashamed to call you his sibling. He isn’t ashamed of you. Are you ashamed of him? We’ve all been ashamed of Jesus. We are often ashamed of him, but he is never ashamed of us.12 Hebrews 11:16 (ESV) But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. They experienced the temptation to be ashamed of him… Hebrews 10:32–34 (ESV) But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Hebrews 13:13–14 (ESV) Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” Psalm 22:22 (ESV) I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: Psalm 22:1 (ESV) My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? Psalm 22:7–8 (ESV) All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” Psalm 22:16–18 (ESV) For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. Isaiah 8:14–18 (ESV) And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.” Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples. I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion. 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” Literally: I will sing hymns in church. When did Jesus first call his disciples brothers? Notice that he doesn’t call them besties… or homies… he calls them brothers, but only after the cross. In fact, immediately after the cross he told the women who had just seen him in his resurrected body: Matthew 28:10 (ESV) Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” It isn’t our shared humanity that makes us siblings of Jesus. It isn’t that we are both human. But rather a spiritual connection by faith. We have the same righteousness. We have the same Father. We are united now to him as his brothers and sisters. The most important blessing we gain by having Jesus as our elder brother is entry into the family of God. He is not only the elder brother, but he is also the natural-born Son of God. By grace we adopted into the family to which Jesus belongs as the rightful Son. We are not his brothers and sisters because we are children of God; rather, we are children of God because we are his brothers and sisters.13 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” Jesus in his suffering had to put his trust in the Father. He endured by entrusting himself to his faithful Father. It was an act of submission to the Father. It was dependence. It was how he endured suffering. When you are suffering, you have Jesus as your example of entrusting himself to God in the midst of a situation. He had to trust: the Father will raise me from the dead, the Father will recompense my enemies. And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” God has given children to the Son. Oh, that he would want us. Beloved, let this sink in deeply to your thinking. Jesus isn’t ashamed of you. He isn’t embarrassed to be a human and he isn’t embarrassed that you are part of his family. He isn’t begrudgingly receiving you from his Father as a punishment. It’s not that his Father has paired Jesus with the bad ones to rehabilitate us. Or because he has displeased his Father in some way. Rather, it is regarded that we are a gift to him from his Father. John 6:37 (ESV) All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. John 10:27–29 (ESV) My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. John 17:6 (ESV) I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Sorry, Lord, you got the short end of the stick on that deal. You became a son of man that I could become a Son of God? Yes. Gladly. It was my intention and my very best plan from the beginning. Jesus became lower the angels. He took on flesh. He tasted of death on a cross. And it was so that he might bring us into God’s family, where we become little brothers and little sisters. We look to him as our pioneer who made a way for us and who ministers to us as a high priest who can sympathize with our weakness.

2005 Annual Report   Big Cat Rescue's Mission Statement:  To provide the best home we can for the animals in our care and to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abuse, abandonment or extinction by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity, and how they can help through their behavior and support of better laws to protect the cats.   Advances:  In 2005 the IRS reported that there are 964,000 registered charities in the U.S.  Only 81 of them qualify for and display the BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards seal.  Big Cat Rescue is one of them. This seal confirms that the organization meets all 23 of the Standards for Charity Accountability. We have become so well known in the area, that our volunteers complain about wearing our logos in public because everyone loves us so much they just have to stop us and tell us so. Howie Baskin helped a Girl Scout troop organize our first Golf Tournament which netted 15,000.00. Invested in undercover surveillance equipment to shed light on the dirty truth behind the exhibition and exploitation of exotic cats.   Animal Care:  We added more whole prey to our cats' weekly diets and switched over to a prepared diet created by Natural Balance that improves their health via vitamin supplements. Faith the baby bobcat was upgraded to a much larger and more challenging Cat-a-tat where she had to learn to “out-fox” her food. Later, after completing her survival training, she was released onto 17,000 acres of pristine bobcat habitat.  President Jamie Veronica, and the interns track her weekly to insure that she is thriving on her own. We had to turn away 85 big cats that were no longer wanted by their owners but we rescued Snorkle the tiger from a circus owner and brought in tigers: India, Nyla, King, Princess and Narak from the circus. Rescued three baby mountain lions who were orphaned by a hunter in Idaho.  Their names are Artemis, Ares and Orion and they were neutered and spayed this year so that they can always stay together.   Staff and Volunteer Training:  Jamie Veronica got licensed by the state to be able to pick up injured or escaped wildlife.  In the past it had to be brought to us by someone who was so licensed .  Cathy Mayeski and Jen Rusczcyk completed the Clicker Training Expo in CA and now have 57 of our cats in the Operant Conditioning program. Jen organized and developed the Enrichment program making it one of the best in the country.   Jamie Veronica took the Intern Program to the next level and manages their housing, group activities and scheduling.  The Volunteer Committee re-wrote the Volunteer Program and the Intern Program and have updated ALL of our volunteers level of certification through testing. Some of our members attended the EARS training. (Emergency Animal Rescue Service) Hired green shirt Sharon Marszal to work filling orders for the gift shop and sent her to eBay training classes.  Read books on Non Profit Marketing, Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash to perfect our skills in these areas.   Education:  Our Education Director, Kathryn Quaas, is partnering with the Florida Aquarium to promote several joint efforts for schools and summer camps. We did legislative presentations to Stetson Law University on three occasions this year promoting a register to vote drive.  The Fur Ball CD of games, puzzles, screensavers and more were given to the 500 attendees with 300 extra being used as rewards for children who answer questions correctly during her presentations and field trips.   Howard began working with the Greenfund Network to create a joint venture in schools where kids turn in ink cartridges for recycling in bags that tell about Big Cat Rescue so that both their school and the sanctuary can benefit from the program.  Some kids may not care about raising money for scholarships, but they do care about saving tigers and this is a way to inspire them to keep these cartridges out of the landfills.   Filmed the rescue of three orphaned baby cougars with David Hurd Productions for use on the Animal Planet's new series that will be aired repeatedly, and thus help educate people about what is happening to their precious wildlife in the name of sport.  Six local libraries now stock our video, The Big Cat Picture in their documentary sections.   The portion of our web site that is devoted to education aimed at children through learning games has grown in leaps and bounds.  We added hundreds and hundreds of puzzles, free wallpapers, free screensavers and other educational activities that feature photos and drawings of the cats along with our message that “Exotic Animals Don't Make Good Pets!”  Began compiling worksheets and coloring pages for a educational handbook for students next year. Added FCAT lesson plans to our Teacher's Resource area. Used the Google grant to broadcast the availability of these teaching aids to students, their parents and teachers.  We participated in a study with Odd Cast that resulted in us being awarded 100,000 free streams for our Virtual Hosts.   Legislation:  Founder, Carole Baskin was unanimously elected to serve on the Board of the Humane USA Political Action Committee.  She was also appointed to the steering committee of the Florida Chapter of Humane USA. We enlisted the Florida Animal Control Association to help us approach the State of Florida in an effort to change the rules to better protect the animals and the public.  We were joined by HSUS and Humane USA in this endeavor and have asked the National Fraternity of Police Officers to join us as well. Carole was also appointed by Commissioner Brian Blair to serve on the Animal Advisory Committee and was elected secretary.  In November she was unanimously nominated to serve as Chair of the Animal Advisory Committee. We attended the Tampa Bay Partnership's Tampa Bay Day in Tallahassee and met with 25% of the state's legislators to ask for better animal protection laws.   We began promoting our Legislative portion of our web site that is dedicated to educating the public and legislators about animal welfare bills. 1,111,647 pages of bills were viewed by visitors.  We rallied support for the Federal bills to stop canned hunts with an aggressive online letter campaign to get people to ask their senators and representatives to co-sponsor this bill that would make it illegal to transport exotic animals across state lines for the purpose of injuring or killing them. We promoted hundreds of bills at the state and federal level. In just the first year we were responsible for 20,969 letters being sent to congress on behalf of the animals.   We launched our first online petitions and gathered 494 signatures on one to ban breeding and sale of exotic cats and 1878 signatures on 10 things we want legislators to know which includes the banning and breeding of exotic cats. We also launched our first online polls to see how people feel about issues such as animals in the circus, bobcats and cougars being hunted, exotic animal pets and more.  Response has been terrific and we are finding that roughly 85% of the public loves animals and want better laws to protect them and 90% do not want to see big cats being made to perform.   Attended AZA's Legislative session and Taking Action for Animals in Washington, DC.  Met with our Senators and Congressmen in D.C. and here locally to discuss the exotic animal issues. County Administrator, Pat Bean and Animal Services Director, Bill Armstrong both toured and interacted with the cats, learning about how we use operant conditioning for emergency preparedness.  We hosted tours for Hillsborough County Commissioners: Kathy Castor, Ronda Storms, Jim Norman, Ken Hagan, and for aids to Brian Blair and Mark Sharp.  We also toured Pinellas County Commissioners: Ronnie Duncan and Karen Seel.  We introduced these commissioners and State Representatives Kim Berfield and aids for Kevin Ambler along with team players for gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis so that they have a better understanding of why Florida needs laws to prevent the private ownership of dangerous exotic pets.   Requested that we be appointed to the state's Captive Wildlife Committee but were denied as the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission decided to comprise the committee of exotic pet owners.  State Legislators made it known later that the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission “had better fix this exotic animal problem or the legislature was going to get involved and FWCC was not going to like it.”  Began working on a memo with the help of former gubernatorial candidate Bill McBride's law firm that affirms a County's right to impose laws that do regulate exotic animal ownership as long as those laws do not single out exotic pet from other provisions that would apply to all.  In the past the Counties often thought they were helpless in the face of the constitutional amendment that had granted the Fish and Game agency the ability to act outside of the legislative process that all other states enjoy.   Fundraising and Marketing:  We had our first ever $10,000.00 day of tours and private tours in December.  Implemented our first direct mail campaign at Christmas with a request to support the three orphaned cougars.  We doubled the price of the Fur Ball tickets from 55.00 and 75.00 to 100.00 and 150.00 and raised a net of $60,000.00 (up from 40,465 last year) with only 500 attendees.  This enabled everyone to have a better time because there were no lines and our volunteers found it much easier to deal with 500 people at check out as opposed to 850 like we had last year at lower prices.  We discovered last year that at 55.00 we were just breaking even and for people for whom that was a lot of money we found that they did not spend money in the auctions so we had to evaluate whether the Fur Ball was a donor thank you party or a fundraiser and deciding it was the latter made the agonizing decision to double the price.   Opened an online store on eBay to reach a broader market with our logo's items and unique offerings. We tried MagFundraising.com for the first time and raised almost 3000.00 in magazine subscription commissions.  Our volunteers raised $3000.00 wrapping books at Borders Books.  Invested in Telosa's Donor Management software. We were given the front and back page of the Tampa Tribune's Commentary section and have been on several national programs including CNN, Fox, Animal Atlas on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.   We purchased a second terminal for our Point of Sale system due to the overlap of tours beginning and ending in the gift shop.  In Jan our web site was averaging 170,000 hits per day and by the end of the year was reaching more than 300,000 hits per day with a surge to 744,000 hits per day thanks to a Google Adwords grant for unlimited advertising for three months. Cox radio gave us more than 100 on air spots to advertise the Valentine's Day wedding at Big Cat Rescue and gave us 300 more free advertising spots on air for our golf tournament on two stations. They also donated 300 spots for the Fur Ball.   Jamie Veronica's photos have been used in Biodiversity Magazine by Tropical Conservancy, and we created a Stock Photo portion of our website where featured artists donate their work and we sell the images online.  We set up Cafe Press and Zazzle sites to sell her images to raise money for the cats.  We were asked to apply for the WEDU's charity awards for our fundraising and marketing achievements.  The ink recycling program with Greenfund Network has succeeded far beyond our initial goals thanks to marketing the envelopes through our newsletter with now has a circulation of more than 35,000 homes.  We are candidates for the Webby Awards with the winner to be announced in 2006.   We created several video productions that tell viewers what we do including Orange Sky by Jamie Veronica and the Two Minute Tour by David Hurd.  In addition to this we created several new interactive slideshows including one called Born To Be Free that contrasts life in cages to life in the wild.  We started our first automatic direct deductions for banks and credit cards and a program with Albertson's where participating card carriers can have part of their purchases donated to us.  We created our first Big Cat Travel site that allows people to get the best Priceline prices on airfare, car and hotel rental, cruises and event tickets with the commissions paid to Big Cat Rescue.  Carole lost 17 more pounds with Matol and set up www.Matol-Diet.com so that others can lose weight, build their own home business and the commissions go to the cats as well. Volunteer Beth Stewart created and marketed a calendar of our sanctuary called Saving Big Cats.  This calendar was available at Amazon.com, Borders.com and BarnesAndNoble.com and we sold a number on site and on line as well.  The calendar was produced by TideMark Productions and featured photos of our cats for every month and their personal rescue stories.   With the help of Teasdale Worldwide Howard Baskin created our first formal Corporate Sponsorship program, both in general and for the Fur Ball.  We held special kid's tours after Thanksgiving and Christmas and were packed and got a lot of good press coverage for doing something for the kids.  We were in the press 48 times in 2005 and many of these were interviews with Scott Lope.  We were in Glamour Magazine twice, on CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Inside Edition and were instrumental in providing background information for Parade Magazines' piece on the exotic pet trade and for ABC's Prime Time that should air next year.  We have a PSA that was made jointly with the Girl Scouts of America that is airing nationally to encourage young people to get involved and do something good in their community.  We ended the year with money in the bank to begin building our Big Cat Lodge.   Grounds Improvement:  Completed two more tiger Cat-a-tats for the circus tigers in case of emergency. New Cat-a-tats were built for cougars; Mack and Cleo along with hurricane proof dens for each of them.  Cages were reshaped and room additions built for Caracals; Rusty & Sassy and Cachinga & Cachanga.  The same was done for the Serval; Alpha, Bobcats; Alex & Windsong and Banshee.  In addition many of the cats got hammocks, swinging platforms, secondary dens just to play in and Alex & Windsong got a new fort.  Tonga was moved and his old roofless cage was turned into a temporary playground for the three orphaned cougars.   The E-Center was whimsically painted to look like a leopard and the Cabins were painted by volunteer Julie Hanan to look like a tiger.  Butterfly gardens were added by Kathryn Quaas and the kids of summer camp to the Cabin area.  We moved the cavies off the tour route to a much larger enclosure and tore down the old otter cages that they had lived in on the lake.  The area was cleared so that there is a beautiful view of the lake and the tigers and lions beyond now.   Brought in a new Intern home that is a 4BR/2BA and Vern built a deck that is perfect for socializing after a long day of cat chores. Cleared all Brazilian Peppers from the back forty and built a road around the cell tower to make the back parcel more accessible. This area required heavy clearing and then bush hogging of dog fennel and some fill over the concrete to turn it into a lovely park like area.  Stood falling wall back up. Weeded and planted ferns at the beach. Began massive clean up of Styrofoam from lake banks. Bought a new shed for the two new golf carts and a new riding mower.  Added lots of filing cabinets and storage cabinets to the gift shop and office. The fenced waiting area had a cola machine, waterfall and lots of landscaping and mulching added to create a nice place for guests to wait for their tours.  Donor recognition signs were added to this area.   Bought three more acres for alternate access and parking and cleared the land of dog fennel so that we can keep it mowed.  Took on debt for the first time in our history with the purchase of this land.  Began negotiations with Outback and the County on building a multi use Education and Conference Center called the Big Cat Lodge.  Unveiled the new conceptual drawings of this improvement created by Collman and Karsky with help from Genesis at the Fur Ball. Applied for a Planned Development for this additional 3 acres to give us cross access, parking and 6 more residences for interns and volunteers.   Helping Others:  We invited other animal welfare groups to use our Legislative tools in customized banners on their web sites so that they could encourage their visitors to write their representatives about important animal welfare issues. We hosted the Alzheimer's Memory Walk for 600 walkers who raised 50,000 for Alzheimer's victims. Worked with PAKT to help them negotiate a deal with the circus and AZA for promoting responsible, life time care for animals who have had to work for a living. Continued to help ACT by driving the Spay Day trailer each month so that 100-160 cats per month can be spayed.   Charities that we donated to this year in the form of Free Passes to our sanctuary:  100 passes to No More Homeless Pets Adopt-a-thon 30 passes and gift certificate for a Big Cat Expedition to Florida Voices for Animals, Donated a Big Cat Expedition, a Feeding Tour and more to Animal Coalition of Tampa for their Some Enchanted Evening fundraiser and the same again to their Stride For Strays walk-a-thon. Donated the use of our facility to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay for their Volunteer Appreciation party and to National Humane Society for their volunteer and donor recognition party at Christmas. Donated an Expedition and Two for One Passes to SPOT and worked with them to create a segment on Pinellas County's Public Access Channel. Hosted a party for a team of Florida Panther protectors.   We raised 1250.00 each for EARS and HSUS to aid the animal victims of Katrina and 1000.00 each for conservation programs to save the margay in Brazil, to help start an eco tourism lodge in Guyana and to assist Lewa in Africa.   Other:  Gave a private tour to Toronto Blue Jay's Shea Hillenbrand. Customized a golf cart for hurricane use by creating a cat-proof cage to drop down over the carriage so that we can access any part of the property in the event of a cat being loose.   In a year when tsunamis, earthquakes and hurricanes ravaged the globe and other sanctuaries, even good ones, found themselves considering the euthanasia of their animals rather than let them starve due to the drop in donations we were able to thrive.  We are thankful to our staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this possible and to all of our donors and visitors who kept our cats fed in these worst of times.   The saddest news is that we now have to turn away nearly 100 exotic cats every year, because we cannot afford to take in all of them that are being bred and sold into the entertainment, pet and zoo industries.  The most common victims are Lions, Tigers, Cougars, Servals, Caracals and Bobcats.  We are now devoting more time to raising awareness and trying to get laws enacted that will protect these magnificent creatures from man.   The mission has evolved from just saving the cats that ended up in places like fur farms, hunting ranches and auctions, to making a difference on a global scale. People who come here and spend time with our cats are transformed.  I hear, over and over again, how people feel like their lives were changed forever by knowing these animals on such a personal level.  Many times I have heard visitors say, “I looked into that cat's eyes, and I saw God!”   For many of them, it is the first time that they have ever felt that they were intimately connected with the rest of creation.  It is a wake up call that we are all ONE.   It is my dream to integrate the beauty and majesty of the great cats with the inner awakening we can enhance in our visitors.  By making people more aware, we can make the world a better place.   Our Officers and Board of Directors • President Jamie Veronica (not compensated by BCR) • Vice President & BOD Cathy Mayeski (not compensated by BCR) • Secty/ Treasurer  Vernon C. Stairs (not compensated by BCR) • Director and Coordinator Brian Czarnik (not compensated by BCR) These members met for monthly board meetings.   Paid Staff: • Operations Manager  Scott Lope (compensated but not a member of the board) • Gift Shop Manager Cynthia Montayre (compensated but not a member of the board) • Administrative Sharon Marszal (compensated but not a member of the board)

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started!    Sarah: Hi Dr Cabral, I’m a big fan. Thank you for all you do. My daughter is 6 and seems to find it difficult to articulate what she needs to say and even though we constantly correct her, she often pronounces words wrong. I do not see that any of her peers have the same problem. I thought giving her DHA may help, I just struggle to give it to her as she dislikes the taste, even the lemon one. I even tried to sneak it in apple juice but I got found out. What are your thoughts on DHA and would you have any other suggestions on what we could do to improve things? I really appreciate your time, thank you very much. Sarah Cass: Hi Dr C, i cant thank you enough for all you do, teach and be......WE are all truly blessed A very deep heart felt Thank you. .....Could you please recommend what advise you would offer to a 51 year old menopausal women. No cycle for 2 years. Has had high levels of deep emotional stress for 2 years. Is coming out the other side. Thank goodness!! Suffered chronic fatigue in past from high levels of stress/loss/trauma and over training / under eating scenarios when younger. Anyway been suffering with gut issues bloating gas etc, for long time. Completed Oat / HTMA / food Sensitivity and omega 3 .....High on candida / bacteria markers / Succinic...HIgh aluminium and mercury Very High cal / mag / sodium and low potassium chromium and selenium and phosphorus and very low iron. A slow metaboliser. Completed heavy metal detox , 2 x parasite protocols (one advanced) and CBO with limited finisher as felt very bloated on the healthy gut support. Retested and candida reduced but still high bacterial markers. Also still showing parasites present. (Blastocytes and now cryptosporidium) Take FP level 3, B's, Zinc, A.soothe, Calm, Cal-Mag, Alk Vit C. Still suffers constipation, slow bowel movement, fatigue, bloated, gut better but not great, Clean diet, exercise, meditation, etc, daily.  Anonymous: I was recently diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder which I know is not your specialty but I was wondering if you had any advice on the subject. I am already working with a therapist and things like that but would like to know if you have any supplement or lifestyle recommendations that might be helpful in addition to what I'm already doing. Thank you so much. Laura: Hi Dr. Cabral! I've got a question about MARCoNS. I've had three positive tests in the past two years. I've tried different treatments and I haven't found something yet that has helped me eradicate it yet. I just saw a new functional medicine doctor recently about this - she suggested that I try using a nebulizer to inhale a solution of diluted hydrogen peroxide, saline and iodine - she said it can help rid the body of MRSA so it was likely to help with MARCoNS. Do you have any thoughts on this treatment she's suggesting? And...do you happen to know of something that actually works to help the body heal from this? Thank you so much for your time and care! Marlene: Would you say that autism can be cured?   Thank you for tuning into this weekend’s Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes & Resources:  http://StephenCabral.com/1885 - - - Dr. Cabral's New Book, The Rain Barrel Effect https://amzn.to/2H0W7Ge - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: http://CabralSupportGroup.com - - -  Dr. Cabral’s Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Sleep & Hormones Test (Run your adrenal & hormone levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels)

One of the oddest projects ever to reach the Mississippi River was the seventy-five-mile Illinois and Mississippi Canal connecting Rock Island via thirty-three locks with the Illinois River at Hennepin, and from there to Lake Michigan. Completed in 1907, it was too little and too late to save the dwindling steamboat traffic on the Mississippi. It was seldom used, reaching a peak of one six-hundredth of its capacity in 1929 and closing for good in 1951.

Adam Kullberg is the Education Program Manager at Pop Culture Classroom. He joined the team in 2015, after serving as an outreach teacher and volunteer for the organization throughout 2014. Before that, he earned his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona and MA in English Literature from the University of North Texas. Since joining PCC, he has helped develop PCC's outreach programming, pop culture-based workshops, and curricula, including a range of educational programs at Denver Pop Culture Con offered each year to teachers and students of all ages. In his free time, he enjoys playing lacrosse and binging corny action movies. The need for innovative literacy education in Colorado inspired Pop Culture Classroom and its education programs. As teachers, artists, writers, parents, and all around pop culture activists, each of us has personal experience with the transformational power of comics and other pop culture media. We believe that literacy, creativity and creative thinking are essential abilities for our children as they prepare to navigate both the successes and challenges of life. Pop Culture Classroom was founded in 2010 as Comic Book Classroom, a Colorado charitable organization focused on enhancing and improving student's learning experience through the use of comic book media. At the same time, the founders of Comic Book Classroom also created the Denver Comic Con event. The STC curriculum has been offered by schools, educators, libraries, and community organizations all across Colorado and beyond. The curriculum has expanded to include a comprehensive collection of reading materials, instructional videos, interactive activities and arts-based handouts designed to help students investigate storytelling, build art and literacy skills, and eventually create their very own comics. Completed entries are then published in a class collection.* *On this episode of the podcast Joe invites long-time friend Adam Kullberg to the podcast to discuss his work with Pop Culture Classroom. Joe & Adam discuss the various mediums used to drive life lessons home for students, how we can continue to evolve our way of learning, and what's on the horizon in a post-COVID world.  To learn more about Pop Culture Classroom CLICK HERE #PopCultureClassroom #beabetterdad To quickly and easily leave a rating/review for this podcast please go to:  https://ratethispodcast.com/dtalkspodcast This episode of the podcast is brought to you by Snuffy! Good Morning it's Saturday February 20th, and this is The Wenatchee World's newest podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.  Today - Eastmont FFA teams placed first and third in the national Minecraft competition. This episode is brought to you by Equilus Group Incorporated. Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Eastmont FFA may not be out judging apples and potatoes, but the high school and junior high students are still keeping busy in the virtual agricultural world. Recently, Eastmont FFA teams won first and third place in their very first national Minecraft competition. Adviser Mariah Julson said they were trying to figure out a way to keep the kids busy with FFA, which is offered as a career and technical education program through the school. Julson said that the National FFA partnered with Microsoft, and that the kids are coming up with a way for different animals to coexist with humans after we've let them spring free because everyone has been indoors. Julson also said that one of their people in Washington FFA, Denny Wallace, sent out an email. In that email, Wallace mentioned a challenge between Microsoft and the video game Minecraft where students were able to solve a world issue and connect it back to agriculture. The kids were interested -  they ended up trying it and placing! Each team was given a scenario that presented a problem. They had to come up with a solution. Sophomores Riggan Schwab and Brynn Kelley tackled the honeybee issue. They decided to create a greenhouse that had an opening for bees to come in and out as they please to help pollinate. They had ready access to food for humans. The two students spent a weekend building. They finished in first place. Eighth-grader Madeline Boersema also participated. Boersema was given a scenario of figuring out how to help wild horses. She did the overpasses over Snoqualmie, where there is a natural overpass for animals to get over major highways. Boersema won third place. Throughout the process students met with advisers every week, but Julson said that “they just kind of ran with it” The students could have continued in the Minecraft competition, which would have moved into computer coding, but it didn't align with their school schedules. This is the first year Eastmont has ever done this, and they could not be happier.    Congratulations students! Now, our weekly profile of one of the World's 30 Under 35 award recipients.  After graduating from high school in Bozeman, Montana, Anthony, or Tony, Hickok studied auto body repair and management. He then went on to spend seven years in the field.  Then, he earned a degree from Montana State University in philosophy and economics before moving to Wenatchee to work as a lift operator at Mission Ridge.  Now he's the marketing manager. He calls himself the "supervisor of stoke” When we asked Hickok what accomplishments he's most proud of he told us that being a part of the Mission Ridge team that created the Learn to Ski or Snowboard Freedom Pass product is up there.  In two seasons, the Freedom Pass has provided 2,000 individuals who had never before skied or snowboarded with the opportunity to fall in love with the sports.  Last year, that team won a national award for the Best Learn to Ski program out of all the ski areas in the country. Hickok is also very passionate about outdoor recreation and promoting it here in the Wenatchee Valley. He said he's had the opportunity to work with so many great people in the community. And has had the honor to sit on or be a member of five committees or boards.  To him, it's all been an awesome experience watching and participating while the community seizes control of its future and focuses on its citizens and environment. His advice for future leaders? Connect with what you are most passionate about. Whenever possible, promote quality over quantity and depth over width. Completed in 1995, The Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail is an urban bicycle and pedestrian trail in Wenatchee that was originally conceived in the 1980s by the Chelan County Public Utility District as part of an environmental mitigation program. The Eastside trail was funded by donations from local businesses and grants from the state government and began construction in April 1993. The section within East Wenatchee was also designated as the Russell T. Congdon Memorial Trail, named for a major donor. Thanks for listening. For this week's podcast extra, we're once more highlighting the work of our colleague Jim O'Grady and his brilliant podcast "Blindspot: The Road to 9/11." This is episode 5: The Idea. The World Trade Center was built with soaring expectations. Completed in 1973, its architect, Minoru Yamasaki, hoped the towers would stand as “a representation of man’s belief in humanity” and “world peace.” He even took inspiration from the Great Mosque in the holy city of Mecca with its tall minarets looking down on a sprawling plaza. What he did not expect was that the buildings would become a symbol to some of American imperialism and the strangling grip of global capitalism. Our story picks up in Manila — January 6th, 1995 — where police respond to an apartment fire and uncover a plot to assassinate the Pope. A suspect gives up his boss in the scheme: Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Yousef has been on the run for two years and has disappeared again. Port Authority Detective Matthew Besheer and FBI Special Agent Frank Pellegrino fly to Manila to follow his trail. They learn that Yousef has a horrifying attack in the works involving bombs on a dozen airplanes, rigged to explode simultaneously. President Bill Clinton grounds all U.S. flights from the Pacific as the era of enhanced airline security begins. Yousef’s plot is foiled. But what it reveals about his intentions is chilling.
