Vocalist, songwriter and Grammy Award-winning artist Mike Farris is on the show today. Mike has this incredible new record out called “The Sound Of Muscle Shoals” that he recorded at the legendary Fame Studios with Rodney Hall (the son of Fame founder Rick Hall - the guy who is largely responsible for creating the Muscle Shoals sound that we all know and love). Mike has had an incredible career, from his early days in the insanely wild and high energy band The Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies, Mike honed his skills as an incredible frontman and vocalist, but as we talk about today, he feels like he never really learned to sing until he started making solo records in 2001. Since that time, Mike has continued to evolve as an incredible singer whose voice and delivery pull from soul, gospel, country and rock n roll - and all of them very convincingly, as only someone who has truly lived the life can. His 2014 album “Shine For All The People” won a Grammy award, and Mike has been consistently recording and touring the world for decades. I wanted to hear from Mike about his songwriting, how he captures his voice in the studio, how his travels (which include some incredibly rocky patches) have brought him to where he is today, and how he feels like a bit of a misfit in a world where people love to peg musicians under a certain style. We also get into the nuts and bolts of making his new album, and the legacy that he feels working in such a sacred space with incredible musicians.Mike has quite a few albums out under his own name and the Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies albums are also well worth hearing. But do check out the new record “The Sound Of Muscle Shoals” - it's an incredible listen. You can catch Mike on tour and get all the latest info at mikefarrismusic.comEnjoy my conversation with Mike Farris! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. I'm super excited to have @scottymetz on the show for this week's episode. Scott's stellar guitar work has been the hallmark of his 25-year career, and he's now grown permanent roots with his project (and lifelong dream) @lamp_trio along with bandmates @russlawton and @raypaczkowski (both of Trey Anastasio Band). LaMP's latest album, “One Of Us” is out there now for your listening pleasure; it's a spectacular work of musical art!! Scott brings his excitement, enthusiasm, curiosity and his special brand of enduring authenticity to the show, and I couldn't be happier to share this special interview with all of you. Scott talks to me about his life of “happy accidents;” a series of life-defining moments that he expresses with genuine gratitude and surprise. From a punk rock kid to exploring gypsy jazz, to diving into the depths of improvisation, to his early roots and connection with WEEN, Scott has seen and experienced tons of twists and turns, and he's here to share it all.================================Chapters00:00 Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg03:45 Introducing Scott Metzger05:56 The New LAMP Album and Festival Experiences 09:57 Travel Challenges and Touring Life 13:16 Managing Expectations in Music and Life 16:10 Creating Accessible Instrumental Music 21:02 Musical Values and Artistic Integrity 24:39 The Heart of LAMP: Drumming and Melodies 25:37 Early Musical Influences and Experiences 31:08 The Spirit of Rock and Roll 31:35 AI and Live Music: A Candid Discussion 33:16 From Punk Rock to Jam Bands: A Musical Journey 35:46 Meeting Phish: A Turning Point 37:12 The Birth of a Band: Joining Phish's Legacy 40:31 Growth Through Improvisation: The JRad Experience 42:27 The Importance of Space in Music 44:34 Finding Your Voice: A Journey of Self-Discovery 46:15 Preparation Meets Opportunity: The Music Career Path 52:47 Artistic Focus: Following the Musical Thread 55:22 The Essence of Authenticity 56:48 Finding Balance in Creativity 59:57 Exploring Musical Dynamics 1:02:20 The Role of Instruments in Expression 1:05:05 Transitioning Through Personal Change 1:08:39 The Journey to Sobriety 1:15:01 Embracing Growth and Change1:21:50 Episode Wrap Up with Host Josh Rosenberg===================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

It's a pretty guitar-heavy episode today as the lads chat about musical performance-themed anxiety nightmares (Pete's a member of the Smashing Pumpkins in his), different guitar sounds they like, and Liam Gallagher's son's band. But don't worry non-guitar fans, there's plenty for you to enjoy too! Including cricket, Vinnie Jones trying and failing to get a catchphrase off the ground, Simon Cowell's mental face and a follow up email about the guy from Brewdog. Idle listener: thou mayest believe me without any oath that I would this podcast, as it is the child of our brain, were the fairest, gayest, and cleverest that could be imagined. But I could not counteract Nature's law that everything shall beget its like; and what, then, could this sterile, illtilled wit of ours beget but the study of a dry, shrivelled, whimsical man, in arts beset by drunken dads and sickly pale horses, by guitar playing ladies and miniature squires, by star wars heads and amalgamate uma musume. My wish would be simply to present it to thee plain and unadorned, without any embellishment of preface or uncountable muster of customary sonnets, epigrams, and questions, such as are commonly put in the episode description; I have given thee condensed all the squirely drolleries that are scattered through the swarm of these vain images of Don Quixote. And so—may God give thee health, and not forget us. Vale. I love going to guitar shops. It's fun to go, enjoy, play, and experience what is out on the market. I cannot think of a single shop I go to that doesn't have at least 1 guitar that inspires me when I pick it up. Of course this is usually out of a selection of 50 to 1000 guitars of my choosing because I am right handed. My buddies Barber and Swags are a different story because they are lefties. This is why I've offered to take either of them on a roadtrip to Houston, TX to shop at South Paw Guitars. A guitar sanctuary solely dedicated to stocking high quality left handed instruments. But how far is it to Houston? Did we make any stops along the way? Why are we looking for a new guitar? Should you trade in the old one? How quickly can you bond with a new piece of gear? Can it make you play better? What does Guitar Hero have to do with all of this? Can you put a right handed guitar in a left handed case? And he didn't choose lefty… lefty chose him. Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Swags, on the Tweed Couch.

Today, I want to talk about your guitar. It's all about making sure the guitar you play is comfortable for you. Ideally, the best way to find the best guitar for you is to go to a physical guitar shop and try several guitars. It's important to remember that it's all about your fingers, your body, and what you like the feel and sound of, without thinking about brand names or what others think. Take a listen to the episode to find out the tips and advice I have for finding the best guitar for you! If you enjoyed this podcast, you can get my free “guitar secrets” video course, which will help all beginners or those who are “stuck”. Jeff Tweedy is best known as the front man of Wilco, the rock band he formed in Chicago in 1994. In recent years, he's been working more often as a solo artist, putting out records under his own name as well as a memoir and essays on songwriting. Amanda Petrusich sat down with the singer-songwriter to talk about “Twilight Override,” which comes out later this month. Recorded with Tweedy's two sons and a number of his fellow Chicago-based musicians, “Twilight Override” is a triple album of songs centered on themes of time, aging, fear, and “making peace with something ending.” “If we're looking at the word override, what am I overriding?” Tweedy says. “I mean, twilight's beautiful . . . but you need to override your fear of it.” Tweedy performs acoustic versions of “Love Is for Love,” “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter,” and “Forever Never Ends.”

Some kids take apart toys. Jay Sasseen popped the backplate on a red Squier and never looked back. That curiosity turned into Parottdice Guitars, a Multnomah Village spotwhere weird gear and rad people hang out. We talk about the "gear flipping hustle" that became a real-deal guitar shop with a simple creed that actually works: fix things well, price things fair, remember names. Then we go treasure hunting. Melody Makers that sing, MIJ Fenders that convert haters, Firebrand oddballs, 80s Gibsons that rip, a Hondo rifle-shaped contraption with a trigger pickup selector, and Blake's rat-rod EB-0 turned Bass VI that should not work but does. This is a very fun episode and there is something for everyone who loves the guitar, the MI industry, and weird dudes shooting the breeze. The Wailin' Jennys have been singing together for more than two decades - recording albums, touring the world, and filling venues large and small. After all these years, the trio—Ruth Moody, Heather Masse, and Nicky Mehta—have reached both a plateau and an inflection point. What's it like for a musical group that's been together for that long; for singers who've found such perfect vocal harmony for one another? How do they each think of songwriting, and of creative work in general? On their recent west coast tour, they stopped by the studio for a chat about those things and more.THE WAILIN' JENNYS ARE:Ruth Moody - Banjo, Guitar, VocalsNicky Mehta - Guitar, Drums, VocalsHeather Masse - Bass, VocalsFeaturing excerpts from the Jennys' albums Bright Morning Stars, iTunes Session - EP, 40 Days, and FirecrackerFEATURED/DISCUSSED:"Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Jim Steinman, sung by Bonnie Tyler and Rory Dodd"Paradise by the Dashboard Light," "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)," "Objects in the Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are" - by Jim Steinman sung by Meat Loaf"Closer To Fine" and "Love's Recovery" by Indigo Girls from Indigo Girls, 1989Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert, 2016Kirk's essay on creativity, "Follow The Spark"Jeff Tweedy talking songwriting on The Ezra Klein Show"What Am I Here For" by Jade BirdMUSIC PICKS:Heather: Bonny Light Horseman, Keep Me On Your Mind/Set You Free, 2024Ruth: Aaron Neville, "Louisiana 1927"Nicky: Afghan Whigs, Black Love ----LINKS-----

Bruce Bouton is an accomplished pedal steel guitarist who has played on an extensive string of massive country albums and singles from the 80's onward. From his multi-year stint backing up Ricky Skaggs, playing some of the most memorable steel licks of the era, to most of Garth Brooks' musical output all through the 90's, Bruce has also appeared on records for Emmylou Harris, Brooks & Dunn, The Mavericks, Shania Twain, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Reba McEntire, and many more. Bruce has incredible skill on the instrument and has found a way to come up with hooky, accessible yet technically skillful parts and solos that have contributed to the success of so many of those recordings. He's been at this a long time and brings a wealth of experience to sessions and gigs still today. Bruce also made an instructional pedal steel video that is well worth seeking out - I sure found it enlightening when I was starting to play steel. Bruce is still very active around Nashville and we had a chance to hang out at the Henhouse and spend an hour or so talking about lots of his history and path to where he is today. You can get all the current info on Bruce at his website:www.rockinlapsteel.comEnjoy my conversation with Bruce Bouton! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss.
