Hello dear listener, This week I'm joined by both Matt Knight and JD Short, and we're chatting all about our favourite things at this year's Brighton Guitar Show! This year we were all forced to work on booths, so we saw a lot less than usual, but that certainly didn't stop us from spending loads of money on gear that we talked each other into buying! Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! Kelly Osbourne: “Papa Don't Preach” Epic Records, 2002 Pitchfork Rating: 3.7In a move that can only be described as “aggressively Y2K,” Kelly Osbourne—daughter of Ozzy, wearer of neon hair, and survivor of MTV's The Osbournes—emerged from the reality-TV fog of war to drop her cover of Madonna's “Papa Don't Preach.” A bold choice, given that Madonna's version is iconic, controversial, and, crucially, good. Kelly's version? It exists.Let's be clear: this is not so much a cover as it is a hostage situation. The song has been taken, tied to a chair in a Hot Topic changing room, and forced to watch early-2000s nu-metal music videos on loop. Guitars are over-distorted. The vocals sound like they were recorded on a Motorola Razr during a family argument. The production is less “punk rebellion” and more “GarageBand preset titled ‘Mall Goth.'”Osbourne's voice, while not the worst thing to ever emerge from a celebrity lineage (looking at you, The Return of Bruno), delivers the lyrics with all the emotional depth of a mildly annoyed barista. When she pleads, “I'm keeping my baby,” it sounds less like defiance and more like someone refusing to return a damaged Forever 21 item without a receipt. That said, there's a perverse charm to it. Like a can of expired Monster Energy found under a car seat, it's a little gross, vaguely threatening, and very much a product of its time. There's even something punk in the audacity of it all—less “fight the system” and more “I dared my label to let me do this and they blinked.”Ultimately, Kelly Osbourne's “Papa Don't Preach” is the kind of cover that reminds you of how great the original was, mainly because halfway through, you'll probably stop and listen to Madonna's instead. And maybe that's the point. Or maybe it's just a vibe. A crunchy, chaotic, eyeliner-smeared vibe.Best Track: The 1986 original RIYL: Watching VH1 at 2 am, burning your ex's hoodie, riding in the backseat of a PT Cruiser.DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy! Send us a textSeason 2, Episode 51It's Friday and time for Who's Tom & Dick and today the boy's have a very special guest Mr Phil Wright lead singer of 1970's band and chart topper "Paper Lace"Paper Lace is an English Pop and Rock band formed in Nottingham, England in 1967. They achieved fame and success in 1974 when they had three UK Top 40 hit singles, including the number one hit "Billy don't be a hero". In the United States they had one number one hit with "The night Chicago died" PAPER LACE started in 1967 as "Music Box" the name change came about in 1970, the line-up included the two founder members Phil Wright (Lead Vocalist & Drummer) Cliff Fish (Vocalist & Bass Player) Sadly Cliff lost a 2 year battle with Cancer in 2023, after much discussion and a period of mourning their loss, the band decided to carry on with a new bass player Dale Corcoran, and together with Phil Hendriks (Vocalist & Guitar) and Dave Major (Vocalist & Keyboards) Phil Wright is still the original singer and drummer, his voice sounding remarkably much the same as it did in 1974. He and Cliff sang and played on Paper Lace's big hits in the 1970's, all other bands using the name "Paper Lace" are non-official tribute acts not affiliated with Phil or the original Band.Listen to Phil as he openly and honestly speaks with Martin and Patrick about his life in the band and what he's up to today, this is an honest interview and we hope you find interesting.https://www.original-70s-paper-lace.com#HeartTransplant#eatingdisorder#RareCondition#HealthJourney#LifeChangingDiagnosis#MentalHealth#Vulnerability#SelfCompassion#PostTraumaticGrowth#MedicalMiracle#BBCSports#Inspiration#Cardiology#Surgery#Podcast#Healthcare#HeartHealth#MedicalBreakthrough#EmotionalJourney#SupportSystem#HealthcareHeroes#PatientStories#CardiologyCare#MedicalJourney#LifeLessons#MentalWellness#HealthAwareness#InspirationalTalk#LivingWithIllness#RareDiseaseAwareness#SharingIsCaring#MedicalSupport#BBCReporter#HeartDisease#PodcastInterview#HealthTalk#Empowerment#Wellbeing#HealthPodcast#Harryhill#Aid's#HIVCheck out our website at www.whostomanddick.comCheck out our website at www.whostomanddick.com

Tyler Bryant's musical journey embodies the purest essence of artistic dedication. From the moment he left his tiny Texas town of 1,700 people at age 17, armed with nothing but talent and determination, his singular focus has been creating authentic music that resonates. That unwavering commitment has evolved into a Grammy-winning career spanning performance, songwriting, and production. What strikes you immediately about Bryant is his refreshing perspective on success. Where once it meant packed venues and non-stop touring, he's found deeper fulfillment in creating meaningful music while maintaining balance. His current rhythm of 50-70 shows yearly complemented by studio work represents not a compromise but an evolution—one allowing him to truly savor each creative moment.Bryant's production philosophy is equally enlightening. Rather than imposing his vision, he describes himself as "a professional appreciator" who helps artists recognize their most magical moments. "Hold on, do you realize when you do this, that's super badass? I have goosebumps," he explains. This approach has led to collaborations with artists ranging from Ruthie Foster to Rodney Crowell, culminating in Grammy recognition that Bryant humbly downplays, insisting "the work is the reward."The conversation reveals a musician who's grown not just in skill but wisdom. From building a professional studio from scratch to recovering his beloved pink Stratocaster five years after it was stolen, Bryant approaches each experience with both passion and perspective. Now preparing for fatherhood with a baby due in August, he's entering yet another creative chapter—one where music and family harmonize completely. As he puts it, success today means "getting to make cool music as much as I possibly can and provide for my family." For anyone navigating their own creative path, Tyler Bryant offers the perfect reminder that authentic art happens when you follow what truly moves you.
Send Steve a Text MessageStruggling to make progress with your guitar playing? The missing piece might not be what you think. Guitar practice isn't just about putting in hours—it's about structuring those hours effectively across three critical domains of musical development. This illuminating discussion breaks down what's called "The Three Levels of Guitar Study," a powerful framework that transforms how you approach learning guitar. The first level focuses on visualization and comprehension. Before your fingers ever touch the strings, your mind needs clarity. Can you see that G chord in your mind? Can you understand how chord progressions work together? This mental mastery forms the foundation of everything else and can be practiced anywhere—even without your guitar.Level two is where most players concentrate their efforts: physical execution. This hands-on development builds your technical abilities through exercises, repetition, and focused practice. Whether you're struggling with bar chords, speed, or finger independence, this level addresses the mechanical aspects of playing. The third level—often overlooked but absolutely crucial—is creativity. Here's where you develop your musical voice through phrasing, dynamics, and personal expression. Even if you primarily play cover songs, this element separates mechanically correct playing from truly musical performance. The most effective guitar practice balances all three levels according to your specific goals and current abilities. Some players need more theoretical understanding, others require technical development, while some should explore creative expression more deeply.Ready to transform your practice routine? Analyze which level needs more of your attention, and watch your playing evolve in ways you never expected. Search for Guitar Zoom Academy to discover how personalized guidance can accelerate your progress across all three levels of guitar mastery. The record captures four nature-inspired suites that obliterate the lines between written music and spontaneous creation. The project shows how Kim moved from performing exclusively new classical works to embracing improvisation and collaborative music-making. Recorded live in a single afternoon at a studio overlooking New Hampshire's Squam Lake, Spaces reveals Kim's deep connection to the natural world and her belief in creating musical environments where artists can truly listen to each other.Kim is here to share the story behind this unique project and discuss how creating space—both musical and personal—has shaped her approach to teaching and performing.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Kim Perlak & Francisco Mela's album Spaces)–Dig DeeperVisit Kim Perlak at kimperlak.com and follow her on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTubePurchase Kim Perlak & Francisco Mela's Spaces from Sacred Black Records or Qobuz and listen on your streaming platform of choice.Meet Dr. Kim Perlak, Chair of Guitar at Berklee College of MusicDig into this episode's complete show notes at spotlightonpodcast.com–• Did you enjoy this episode? Inbal Segev is a virtuoso Israeli-American cellist. She has been characterized as “a cellist with something to say”. She's performed with the Helsinki, Dallas and London orchestras among many others. She frequently commissions and champions new works. Her playing can be heard in the 2005 movie “Bee Season” starring Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche. One of her newest projects in “I'm Nobody! Who Are You?”, an Emily Dickinson setting for unaccompanied women's choir. And she's scoring a documentary film about a Holocaust survivor. My featured song is “Tree Of Life” from the album PGS 7 by my band Project Grand Slam. Text us about this show. The Swongos (Thomas Mangelsen - guitar, Lisa Mangelsen - bass, Brian Liggett - drums) are a surf band from NW Wisconsin (what?!) with a twist. Make that many twists. The foundation of their music is surf, but from there they add layers of exotica, spy, psychedelic rock, metal, alternative, and even jazz (thanks to vibes player Thomas Mattioli) for sonic creations that can be described best by just looking at their album cover art. The colors, textures, and shades that inhabit their original instrumentals is unique and will have you becoming the titular Curious Tourist from their first release. Get ready for something refreshingly different—it's The Swongos!"Swampie Invasion," "Drunk On A Carousel," and "Wanderoo" written and performed by The Swongos℗ 2022 The Swongos. The podcast just wouldn't be the podcast without Tom Lennon! OF COURSE you know Tom from Reno 911, The State, @midnight, the first ever episode of this very podcast, and a million movies that he's acted in and/or written...but he is ALSO quite the guitar wizard. At Chris's request, Tom brought one of his fancy guitars to give Chris a couple of pointers. The dudes hung out, noodled, and talked about their musical influences. Also, Tom told a bunch of stories that sounded like bizarre dreams a person might have after eating right before bed but are totally real and from his actual life! A teenage bass-playing f*ck-up prodigy. A big brother in an ill-fitting bodysuit on national television. A drummer playing chicken with the cops on his motorcycle. And one of the greatest singer-songwriters to ever pick up a guitar and stumble towards a microphone. These were the Replacements: shambolic and chaotic, just like the best rock ‘n roll often is. In 1986, the Minneapolis quartet delivered a legendary performance on Saturday Night Live – one which ensured their short-term demise while cementing their long-term legacy. What other bands or artists should have made it big, but never did? Are there other examples of self-sabotage in music history? It's a classic episode of Baxie's Musical Podcast with guitar legend Carlos Alomar from June of 2023! From 1974 to 2003 Carlos Alomar was the longest serving band member during David Bowie's historic career. He served as one of the key members of Bowie's infamous D.A.M. rhythm section--playing during the most artistically power stretch of his career. But that's not all. Carlos has played on more than 30 different gold or platinum albums with an enormous resume that includes names like James Brown, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Alicia Keyes, Iggy Pop, Luther Vandross, The Pretenders, Simple Minds (featuring his wife Robin Clark), Ben E. King, The Main Ingredient, and the late Tina Turner as well. This is one of the most astonishingly brilliant guests EVER! One of my favorite episodes! Absolutely amazing! Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee
Shawn Okpebholo is a Grammy Nominated Nigerian-American classical composer. He combines his classical training with his African roots. His music has involved themes of Negro Spirituals and stories of enslaved resistance and resilience. He's had commissions from the Chicago Symphony, the United States Air Force and others. His songs have been performed by the Los Angeles, Fort Worth, Portland and Des Moines Operas. And he's conducted Master Classes in Nigeria.
