Christone "Kingfish" Ingram has been steeped in the Blues since he was eight years old, when he visited the Delta Blues Museum as a student in Clarksdale, Mississippi (Jackson Advocate). He played drums, bass, and GUITAR and was recognized at a young age for his exceptional musical talent with his debut album Kingfish, in 2019 on Alligator Records. Since then he's released two more albums, won a Grammy and a shelfful of Blues Music Awards, and he's still just 26. His raw and inspired guitar playing, soulful vocals and mature songwriting, bandleading, mentoring younger musicians, and starting his own record label have led Christone “Kingfish” Ingram to be “the face of a new generation of blues artists” (Fender). Christone "Kingfish" Ingram and his band play songs from the new album, called Hard Road, in-studio. Set list: 1. Voodoo Charm 2. Bad Like Me 3. Nothin' But Your Love

Queen Elizabeth replays a tape of her husband King Edward's band as she obsesses over his failing health. Her brother, Lord Rivers, tries to comfort her, as do her two sons from a previous marriage, Gray and Dorset. She tells them that the sons she conceived with Edward are still too young to rule, and that if her husband dies, the throne will go to Richard until the oldest son comes of age, putting her safety in jeopardy. Buckingham and Derby arrive to report that King Edward's health is improving and that he wants to make peace between Richard and Elizabeth's clans. Richard barges in with Hastings at his side, railing that he's being disrespected and that people are telling lies about him. Elizabeth does her best to defend herself against his accusation that she put Clarence in jail and that she is vying for the throne. As they argue, the old Queen Margaret arrives unseen and listens to them from outside the house, commenting bitterly to herself about how quickly power is lost. She finally confronts the group and berates Richard for the murders of her family before cursing everyone in the room, one by one. After she departs, Catesby enters to say that King Edward wants to talk to his family. Richard, left alone, celebrates his mischief, then hires two murderers to kill his brother Clarence in the Tower. There, Clarence tells Brackenbury (the jailer) about a nightmare he had in which he drowned trying to rescue Richard and was dragged down to hell. Greg Klyma is prolific songwriter and seasoned road performer known for his energetic live performances and clever storytelling lyrics that deliver entertaining rides through hilarity, reflection, passion and loss. Buffalo-born and based, Klyma is a scholar of rock 'n' roll and country music. From that foundation, he has developed a distinctive and compelling sound that resonates with audiences across the country — and even worldwide, with international indie artists having covered his songs. You may also have heard his original tunes on SiriusXM, the Midnight Special, and Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour. Guitar lessons at the age of 13 led to songwriting at age 18. In time, Greg taught himself to play harmonica, mandolin, piano, and tenor banjo. After nearly 30 years of touring and with more than a dozen studio albums under his belt, Klyma isn't slowing down. The Singles Project shows a songwriter who has matured and whose craft continues to evolve. Klyma change is real. Greg visited the Flamingo Lounge on September 29, 2025 and shared his stories and original composition, "Two Degrees in Buffalo", a well-known song by Greg, featured on his 2008 album Rust Belt Vagabond. A sonic thrill ride for fans of guitar music, guitar hero/composer LYLE WORKMAN's new album — called Rhythm and Leads Guitar — is a captivating instrumental odyssey no guitarist should miss. Step into Lyle's studio with me, and we'll plug in some guitars with him and dive deep into his new record and much more — including his blazing solos with Bourgeois Tagg back in the '80s; his new, custom Stan Cotey-modded EVH head; and even some cool pedalboards. And yes: Lyle is a highly accomplished film composer, so if you want to immerse yourself in that realm (including learning how he created soundtracks to hit movies such as “SuperBad” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”), be sure to go back and listen to Lyle's FIRST appearance on this show, which was on Ep. 110 of No Guitar Is Safe (back in 2020). This episode is presented by GUITAR PLAYER and GutiarPlayer.com. Thank you, Guitar Player! And thank YOU for listening. Please share! —JUDE GOLD, host and creator, No Guitar Is Safe podcast
Send Steve a Text MessageMoving beyond scales in improvisation requires balancing technical knowledge with creative expression. We need to develop both our "guitar brain" and our "music brain" to create authentic musical moments.• The guitar brain encompasses technical skills like scales, arpeggios, theory, and fretboard knowledge• Most guitarists get overwhelmed practicing too many disconnected techniques• The music brain thinks about what you want to sound like and how to respond to what you're hearing• Consider elements like phrasing, repetition, dynamics, and register when improvising• Start with backing tracks that match your current skill level and comfortable keys• Narrow your focus instead of constantly adding more techniques• Practice creative expression daily rather than occasionally• Authentic playing connects with audiences more than technical flashiness• Assess what's working in your playing before adding new elements• Make deliberate musical choices about speed, volume, register, and styleKeep practicing and focus on developing your creative approach alongside your technical skills. Guitar legend Steve Howe (Yes, Asia) returns to Now Spinning Magazine for the 3rd time! to go deep on the new reissues of Portraits of Bob Dylan (1999) and Natural Timbre (2001). We discuss how he chose the songs, why he avoided the obvious Dylan hits, arranging with taste (and restraint), performances with Jon Anderson, Annie Haslam, PP Arnold, Phoebe Snow, Allan Clarke, Max Bacon, Keith West, and the elegant drumming of Dylan Howe.We also explore the acoustic architecture of Natural Timbre—fingerstyle breakthroughs (“Dream River”), sequencing as storytelling, and knowing when to put the brushes down. Plus: Steve hints at a new Dylan-related EP, Signals Crossed, bringing the Portraits spirit into the present.Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine

Drummer, composer and bandleader Nate Smith joins me on the show this week. While many people have come to know of Nate's work through his recent collaborations with Vulfpeck, Brittany Howard, and as a member of the Fearless Flyers, Nate has been playing, touring and honing his craft for decades. His early experience with legendary jazz vocalist Betty Carter led to him being a full-time member of Dave Holland's group for many years, and carved out a reputation as one of New York's great up and coming jazz drummers. Nate's wide range of skills and musical tastes led him to start his own group, Kinfolk, which has recorded 2 spectacular albums. A somewhat random invite led him to become a member of The Fearless Flyers, which exploded on youtube, and has paved the way for Nate's own set of solo and collaborative videos that are highly original, exciting, and musical. His collaborations with musicians like Charlie Hunter, Cory Wong, Victor Wooten, Carrtoons, and Lionel Loueke are well documented on both album and youtube videos. Nate's latest project is under his own name, entitled “Live-Action” and is an incredible collection of compositions, improvisations and collaborations with many of his musical partners. Nate will be touring quite a bit over the next while with his band, so be sure to catch them when you can!You can get all the latest info on Nate and all his projects, records and amazing set of videos at natesmithdrums.comEnjoy my conversation with Nate Smith! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. Why This Episode Matters:Dan Rothman isn't just the guitarist of London Grammar, he's a prolific songwriter, producer, and collaborator who's helped carry the band through more than a decade of international success. In this conversation, Dan shares candid reflections on band diplomacy, the power of restraint, and the deep emotional connections that make songs timeless.Who is Dan Rothman:Dan Rothman is best known as the guitarist and co-founder of London Grammar, the British trio whose atmospheric sound and powerhouse vocals have captivated global audiences. Beyond the band, Dan has written, produced, and collaborated with a wide range of artists, and is carving out a serious path as a songwriter and producer in his own right. What We Dive Into:* The balance between being a diplomat and being an artist* How therapy and self-reflection shaped Dan's role in the band* The importance of restraint in guitar and production choices* Lessons from industry legends (Mark Ronson, Greg Alexander, Sting)* Why relationships matter more than hit-making formulas* The beauty of collaboration vs the myth of doing it all aloneThree Key Takeaways:* Diplomacy keeps bands together - Dan calls himself the “bridge” between personalities, showing how soft skills can be as important as technical ones.* Restraint is a superpower - from guitar playing to production, leaving space often creates the strongest emotional impact.* Collaboration > Isolation - even the biggest producers lean on others' strengths. Great records are born from relationships, not ego. Before You Go:Think about your own sessions: are you leaving space for the artist's voice, or filling it with your own ideas? Try practicing restraint and see what emerges when you focus on trust and emotion over perfection.Chapters:0:00 – Intro1:25 – Beyond London Grammar?3:25 – Music as relationships5:35 – Diplomacy, therapy, and keeping the band together7:30 – Saying no to “smash hits”12:30 – The making of “Hey Now”17:55 – Does hard work make a better song?23:00 – Deliberation vs spontaneity24:20 – Guitar tones, amps, and the London Grammar sound28:40 – The art of restraint in guitar playing37:20 – Writing songs that move people41:20 – Emotion over analysis in songwriting48:00 – California Soil and collaborative creation50:20 – Returning to DIY and reflecting on Truth Is a Beautiful Thing57:20 – Collaboration vs doing it all alone59:50 – Quick Hits1:06:15 – Closing reflections & outroList of References from the Interview:Songs:* “Hey Now” – London Grammar* “All My Love” – London Grammar* “You Only Get What You Give” – New Radicals* “Message in a Bottle” – The Police* “Murder on the Dancefloor” – Sophie Ellis-BextorProducts/Gear:* Vox AC30* Fender Twin Reverb* Strymon Flint pedal* UAD Ox Box* H-Delay (Waves)Connect with Dan:* YouTube: @Rothmanmusic* Instagram: @dan.hjrothman* Spotify: London Grammar* Apple Music: London GrammarConnect with Toru:* Website: torubeat.com* Instagram: @torubeat* YouTube: @torubeat* Spotify: Toru* Apple Music: ToruCredits:This episode was co-produced, engineered and edited by Matthew Diaz. Send us a textJoin Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musiciansA dobro lick that ended up in a feature film. A blue-tinted photo above the bar at the Gov. A midnight residency that turned into decades of collaborations. Charlie Owen joins us for a warm, unscripted tour through the songs, friendships, and stages that shaped his life in Australian music. We trade the mythology for the moments: meeting Don Walker in the small hours, saying yes to Tex Perkins for Triple J's Unplugged, and learning how a Working Class Ringos ballad could hush an arena full of Chisel fans. Charlie opens up about his long run with the Divinyls and the bond with Chrissy Amphlett, the quiet pride of being named among Australia's best guitarists, and the surprise of discovering that Midnight Rain with Lewis Tillett topped Rolling Stone critics' list years after the fact. The thread is always the same—collaboration, taste, and putting the song first. We get into the set he's bringing to South Australia: a solo, guitar-forward celebration with dobro, electric, acoustic, and a light touch of keys—no loops, no samplers. He explains why he sings now, how certain tracks like Spencer P. Jones's The New Day of the Dead feel eerily current, and why some songs are too heavy to carry on stage. It's a candid look at legacy, grief, and the craft of making a room go quiet without turning up the volume. If you care about Australian rock history, storytelling through strings, and the way music keeps our people close, this conversation will stay with you.Join us, then share the song that changed you. If you enjoy the show, follow, rate, and leave a review—then pass it to a friend who knows every line to a Tex, Don & Charlie record. What has Charlie Owen been up to lately? “It's not you, it's me.” That's the line Amy Millan used to break up with her guitar. The Canadian singer-songwriter had lost the love she had for her instrument and wasn't sure it would come back. But after taking a break from her band Stars, she found herself working on her first solo album in 15 years. It's called “I Went To Find You” and it came out earlier this year. That's when Amy sat down with Tom Power to talk about the record, and how it was inspired by the loss of her father at the age of five.
