In this week's episode, Paul Andrews addresses a common challenge among beginner guitarists: learning and actually remembering songs. Paul shares a structured approach to not just learning new songs but maintaining and improving them over time. Whether you're struggling to recall previously learned tunes or looking to build a solid repertoire, this episode offers practical tips and actionable steps to level up your song practice routine.Key Topics CoveredCommunity Update:Paul announces a live Zoom Q&A taking place on Sunday, 31st August at 9 pm GMT for Beginner Guitar Academy members. He details how to join, submit questions, and access the recorded session if you can't attend live.Practicing Songs vs. Practicing Skills:Songs are a collection of different skills (chords, rhythms, techniques).Key tip: Break songs down into their skill components to assess if they're suitable for your current level.Avoid picking songs that are too far above your ability; focus on skills first, then songs.A System for Learning Songs Efficiently:Step One: Pick the Right Song:Choose a song that aligns with your current skillset.Listen to the original, identify sections (intro, verse, chorus), and loop those sections in practice.Start with simplified versions and play the song slowly. Only increase tempo as you gain confidence.Step 2: The 3 Ps System for Maintaining Songs:Practice – For new or challenging songs/sections. Loop and break down tricky parts.Playthrough – For songs you can mostly play but need to keep fresh.Perform – For songs you know inside out; these are gig-ready or can be played start to finish confidently.Rotate songs between these categories as your abilities improve.Step 3 - Balancing New Songs and Old Songs (The 50/50 Rule):Don't just chase new songs or only maintain old ones. Spend half your practice on new material and half on revisiting and maintaining what you already know.Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them):Always starting at the beginning of a tune. Not listening to the original recording.Neglecting old songs. Not keeping a song log.Collecting snippets instead of completing full songs.Practicing without a clear goal.Action Plan for This Week:Make a list of every song you can (or almost can) play.Categorize each into Practice, Playthrough, or Perform.Schedule a setlist run-through (like a mini gig at home).Add a new, suitable song to your practice pile, balance new and old (50/50).Track your song practice and progress.TakeawaysFocus on skill-appropriate songs, break them down, and use a structured maintenance method to truly own your repertoire.Rotate between learning new material and refreshing old songs to keep your playing both exciting and reliable.Set clear intentions with every song practice session to avoid getting stuck or demotivated.Celebrate your progress as songs move from “Practice” to “Playthrough” and finally “Perform”.Resources MentionedBeginner Guitar Academy: Join for a structured, supportive approach to learning, with access to live Q&As, workshops, a song library, and two weeks of access for just $1.Next Steps:Ready to make progress with your song repertoire? Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 579 of the Chasing Tone Podcast -  Brian's number one guitar buying tip and California dreaming with Tracii Guns and Norman's Rare Guitars Richard has been living in the 1980s and has a rant. Meanwhile there was some very tragic news in the world of metal so the guys discuss it despite Internet woes. Closer to home in the pedal industry, Josh Scott from JHS had a nasty accident on his cycle so the guys do their best to send healing powers across the airwaves.Blake spent a couple of days on the west coast and hung with almost everybody who is anybody! He tells us about his time with the legendary Norm of Norman's Rare Guitars and somehow it involves the Goo Goo Dolls. Brian shares his one tip for picking a great guitar and Blake talks about his time with friend of the show, Mr. Tracii Guns. Brian has convinced Richard to buy new gear and there is a modicum of excitement before Bri takes it all straight to the gutter. Blake realizes that he too is becoming old and the guys compare aging woes.Duck Update, Meris, Leisure Suit Larry, Richie Sambora, Rimshots...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Courses and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Contact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

Mac DeMarco has long been loved for his laid-back guitar noodlings and so called “slacker” rock. He sometimes calls it "jizz jazz", but whatever it is, it's gained him a loving fanbase across the world. For the past few years, Mac has moved away from traditional albums in favour of brain dumping huge swaths of music – a lot of it without lyrics. But now he's returned with an old school album, and for him he says it's capturing the essence of where he's at right now. What matters. On the day he released Guitar, I invited Mac to Take 5. Send Steve a Text MessageWhat does it really take to build a sustainable career in music while maintaining your sanity and relationships? In this revealing episode, Steve Stine pulls back the curtain on his musical journey and sets the record straight about a common misconception."I do not own Guitar Zoom. I have never owned Guitar Zoom," Steve clarifies early in our conversation. Working for Dan Denley's company for 15 years as a content creator has been just one chapter in Steve's multifaceted career. From his first transformative encounter with Kiss's "Love Gun" album as a child to teaching over 100 private students weekly in his twenties, Steve's path has been defined by both passion and overwhelming commitment. The heart of this episode explores the breaking point that changed everything. While juggling teaching positions at a Montessori school, a rock academy, and a college—plus playing in touring bands—Steve found himself burning out. His wife was "running ragged" managing their daughter's activities while he was perpetually absent. When Guitar Zoom offered him a chance to consolidate his career, Steve made the difficult choice to step away from his numerous commitments. "It was the first time I think I've ever just sat in silence and had a moment of peace," he reflects on that transition. Now at 55, with a grandchild and decades of experience behind him, Steve has found a delicate balance between his love for playing, teaching, and his commitment to faith and family. His story offers valuable perspective for musicians at any stage who struggle with the tension between creative fulfillment and personal wellbeing. Whether you're starting your musical journey or reconsidering your own work-life balance, Steve's candid reflections provide both inspiration and practical wisdom. Primus have completed their first headlining tour with drummer John Hoffman, who has been plenty busy since his hire in January 2025. This latest tour spanned 25 dates in 24 cities over 35 days, in which the band played 47 different songs! We dig into those numbers, the stage production, and the general excitement from the fanbase as Les, Ler, and Hoffer made a mad dash across the United States to establish live rapport, continue to establish their foundation, and just perhaps, toss about some ideas that may become songs for a new record. WERE YOU THERE? This week we're dusting off a true gem from the Tone Mob archives! My 2019 conversation with Mike Mitchell of The Kingsmen. Recorded live in a Portland cigar bar, this one dives into the chaotic birth of garage rock and the most famous three chords in history: Louie Louie. Mike tells the story of how the band cut the track in a one-hour, $36 recording session — and then somehow wound up under FBI investigation because nobody could understand the freakin' lyrics. (Imagine J. Edgar Hoover, in a suit and sensible heels, spending taxpayer money trying to figure out if a bunch of teenagers were singing about naughty, naughty things. You can't make this stuff up.) We also get into the invention of Sunn Amps, how their pants-blowing stage volume influenced Hendrix, The Who, and the Stones, and why some folks consider The Kingsmen the accidental godfathers of punk. The Kingsmen's FBI story has been making the rounds on the internet lately, and I thought it fitting to have folks hear it from the man himself. It's a reminder that rock 'n' roll has always been loud, messy, a little stupid, and that's exactly why it's beautiful. So crank this one up, blow your hair back, and enjoy some history from the loudest living room in America. RIP Mike Mitchell. Support The Show And Connect! The Text Chat is back! Named after being mis-identified while returning a uHaul, the pop'n'roll band We Are Scientists has been making melancholic, nostalgic, and melodic songs, familiar and fun, for some 20 years. Since their debut album With Love And Squalor, they've wandered into the worlds of comedy and English soccer while continuing their own spin on indie rock with and without synths. Keith Murray and Chris Cain, on their latest, Qualifying Miles, return to a more direct, "band in a room" sound, reminiscent of the '90s guitar rock heroes of their youth with pedal boards aplenty and rock waltzes. We Are Scientists, with touring drummer, Keith Carne, plays in-studio. Set list: 1. Please Don't Say It 2. Dead Letters 3. What You Want Is Gone

But let me maybe start from the basics. What I'm talking about is the Tonewood amp. That's a little amplifier that clips to the back of your guitar and then it uses a built-in speaker to produce some effects through your guitar's sound box. So I'm going to explain this in some more detail how this works but this is the basic idea. So where do we start? We start with the fact that this amplifier is in fact a rectangular device. If you can imagine you have a guitar relatively middle size, it definitely will occupy a very tiny space on the back of your guitar. The way this works is that with the device, when it ships, you get something called an X-bracket and this X-bracket has some adhesive tape that you use to attach the bracket itself to the guitar from the inside. Now I just wanted to let you know that this does not in any way damage the wood of your guitar. They usually advise that you try the amplifier first before you attach it, but, you know, that's already sort of for the manual. I'm not going to go into these details here. So let's say you know the place where you want to attach the amplifier. From the inside you find a similar space where you can attach the…

Tracii Guns of LA Guns joins Greg Koch for a refreshingly honest exploration of what makes rock and roll endure through decades of industry upheaval. Their conversation weaves through Tracii's musical awakening at age five—hearing Led Zeppelin's theremin breakdown in "Whole Lotta Love" from the backseat of a car—to building and maintaining LA Guns through countless lineup changes and industry shifts. With remarkable candor, Tracii takes us behind the scenes of his evolution as a guitarist, from his early days playing "Scorpion-style heavy metal with a little Jimmy Page thrown in" to his current approach. Guitar aficionados will delight in their deep dive into equipment - Tracii's journey from traditional JCM 800 Marshalls to embracing digital technology while maintaining his signature sound. "You keep changing stuff but you keep getting the same sound," his tech once observed. The pair unpack the mystique of legendary guitarists like Jimmy Page, revealing that greatness often comes from simplicity rather than complexity. "For all the magic that he is, he bought his main guitar for 500 bucks from Joe Walsh," Tracii notes, suggesting that true mastery comes from dedication to playing, not gear acquisition.Perhaps most valuable is Tracii's hard-earned wisdom about music industry survival: "You don't need a million people, you just need enough people to support you. You get 10,000 people buying everything you do, you're done." In an age of algorithm-chasing and viral fame, Tracii and Greg remind us that authentic connection through live performance remains the beating heart of rock and roll.Want to see these two legends join forces?
