I'm honored to introduce four-time Australian Olympian, Lisa Weightman, to the RunChats pod! Professional runner for Asics Running, associate partner at IBM where she oversees a team of 236 consultants, and mom to 7-year-old Pete, Lisa could write a book on how she juggles it all, but is quick to credit her incredibly supportive family, running community & colleagues at IBM. Her running journey is truly inspiring and nothing short of remarkable. Time and time again, Lisa was told she wasn't good enough or couldn't do something and has used that to fuel her enormous competitive fire! Lisa has a personal best of 2:25:15 in the marathon, 1:08:43 in the half marathon, 31:20 in the 10k, and was a bronze medalist in the 2008 World CrossCountry Championships. Lisa recently placed 2nd at the Gold Coast Marathon in early July, running 2:25:55 at age 43! Can you say #fasterasamaster?? Lisa grew up in an athletic family and enjoyed netball as a kid until one too many crashes with the concrete caused her to shift her focus to running. In her teens, Lisa would run sessions with her dad's Aussie footy team, the Fitzroy Lions, so he could keep an eye on her. No doubt trying to keep up or outrun Dad's athletes helped forge her competitive fire. It was also a full-circle moment, as she used to sneak into the locker room with her sister to try and listen to the halftime speeches from her dad who coached the Fitzroy Lions in Australian rules football. Topics: managing her training, her IBM team, and family during the pandemic; youth sports, netball, finding running; trying to stay healthy, finding orthotics, persisting through stress fractures; meaningful race moments—Gold Coast, 8th place at NYC, 5th at London Marathon, 2022 Sydney 10K 31:20 (the fastest time ever run in Australia), World Cross Country team medal in Edinburgh; athletes who inspired—Lisa Ondiecki, Benita Willis; mindset, her darkest hole; impactful coaches—Jeff Hawkins (junior coach), Pam Turney (coach in her 20s), Dr. Richard Telford (her mentor since 2000 and coach from 2009, who coached Lisa''s dad in Australian Rules Football; community service—being an ambassador for Running Mums Australia and for a sustainability company called ZeroCo. I'm stoked to meet Lisa and Lachlan at the Berlin Marathon and am rooting hard for her to chase down a new PR! It was truly a privilege to host this convo and share Lisa's incredibly INSPIRING journey! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on. If you are a keen follower of Australian athletics, Jessica Hull needs no introduction. Earlier in 2020, Jessica went on an Australian national record setting streak, kicking it off with a 5000m new national record of 14:43.80 at the diamond league in Monaco, followed one month later by the national record in the 1500m 4:00.42 set at the diamond league in Berlin. And then just less than two weeks later, Jessica ran another Australian National record in the 3000m in Doha 8:36.03. Now the 5000m record was an 18 year record held by a prior featured performer of the show, Benita Willis, Episode 20 and Jess's 1500m time has her poised to be potentially the first Australian woman to ever run sub four minutes in the coming years for the 1500m. Needless to say, Jessica is a huge talent and on this episode, you'll hear Jess share around the highs, lows and learnings, the origins of her athletic days, the role of her family and support team in helping Jess perform at her physical best, the influence of time spent on scholarship at the University of Oregon in the US, the role of strength and conditioning in Jess's performances, fueling for the work required and Jess survives the physical performance round and issues a doubleheader on the physical challenge for the week. Here is my conversation with Australian National record holder, the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m Jessica Hull. This week I chat with the inspiring, talented and speedy Jessica Trengove OLY about all things running, especially marathon running, and so much more. Jess grew up in country South Australia where she thrived in the sporty culture and excelled in several sports, including netball. Ultimately, inspired by the likes of Benita Willis and Usain Bolt, Jess chose running (and aren’t we Aussies happy about that)! We talk about Jess' break through race in Nagoya, Japan (2012) to qualify for the London Olympics, her PB of 2.25.59 set at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2018 (a hurtling pace of 3.27/km), her two Commonwealth Games Bronze medals and, of course, her Olympic Games experiences in London (2012) and Rio (2016). However, like all professional athletes, there have been a few pot holes in Jess' path to success, such as bone stress injuries requiring adaptive cross training and managing her mind set.Two of my favourite aspects of our discussion were about how marathon running is a tactical event requiring attention to things like getting a good line to your water bottle and gel, especially in a pack, and hearing about Jess’ weekly training schedule. These days, Jess needs to work her training commitments around motherhood; her gorgeous little boy, Billy, was born in November 2019.We also talk about fuelling, goal setting, Jess’ physiotherapy career, training tips for all runners listening to this podcast and her company, Rundies, that produces underpants designed specifically for runners and sports people.Apart from hard work and talent, it is clear that Jess’ passion for running and perseverance have played huge parts in her success as a world class marathoner. Being in the company of Jess is like taking a happy pill; she’s positive and vibrant and made me want to go out for a run!PEOPLE AND LINKS MENTIONED IN THE EPISODEJess Trengove's Instagram handle: @jess_trenJess Trengove's website: https://www.jessicatrengove.com.auRundies: http://rundies.com.auPhysio Smart (where Jess works as a physiotherapist): https://physiosmart.com.auBenita Willis’ Instagram handle: @benitawillis_Podcast episode with Amber Halliday OLY: https://amandaswellbeingpodcast.com/amber-halliday/HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE PODCASTFollow me on Instagram @amanda_wellbeing_podcastPlease tell your friends about the podcast and share it with them.If you could rate and review the podcast on iTunes, that would be super helpful.Purchasing a book from my website is an easy way to support the podcast too. Since the last episode in early March, the world as we know it has certainly changed a little. So after a short hiatus, Down the Track is back and what an episode it is. Sean and Tim are joined by Australian running legend Steve Moneghetti to discuss the impact and ramifications of Covid19 – particularly in terms of the sport of athletics. By mid-March, it was obvious that the situation was getting serious and the cascading number of event cancellations started to hit home to the athletics and running fraternity. Sean talks about the cancellation of the Australian Championships while Steve talks about his experience with one of Victoria’s largest running events, the Run for the Kids. And it's not just events in the firing line, training for everyone has now been upended as squads are no longer allowed, social distancing is the thing and the ability to travel to training venues curtailed. So adapting to a new routine is important and Steve talks of his personal experience of adjustment and workarounds. The IOC finally made the call on the Olympics with the decision being made to shift it by almost exactly 12 months to 2021. Sean examines some of the changed qualification processes for Tokyo 2021 and raises the question of who may be benefitting or disadvantaged by the changes. Steve looks at it from the athlete’s perspective and delves into what decisions or thought processes athletes will be making right now. The knock-on effect of the changed Olympic date means that the 2021 World Athletics Championships scheduled for Oregon moves to 2022 and into a similar time slot as the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. What does this mean for the athletes and the selection of the Australian teams? And with the World Indoors in 2021 moving to the same weekend as the World Cross Country Championships to be conducted in Bathurst, will this impact the first major athletics competition in Australia for 20 years? It’s a case of no rest for the wicked as the AV staff transition to working from home and continue to keep the wheels turning in the world of athletics. With no scheduled competition it is a changed dynamic but this hasn’t stopped a flurry of activity. One such activity is the transition of Coach Education to online learning while our Competitions and Community Engagement teams are hard at it preparing for the world post-pandemic. Episode 35 wraps with a shout out to Tori West and her new podcast Athletics Up North. With two episodes already released featuring Jake Doran and Benita Willis, this is certainly another podcast you should add to the playlist. It’s great to be back and we’re sure you’ll find plenty of interesting conversation in the latest episode of Down the Track.
