Send us a text"A wolf at the door" – that's how researchers describe the growing threat of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), a potentially deadly tick-borne disease that's increasingly prevalent across the Americas. In this eye-opening conversation, Drs. Janet Foley and Andres Lopez-Perez challenge common misconceptions about this dangerous pathogen.Did you know the brown dog tick – a primary vector for RMSF – thrives in urban environments rather than wilderness areas? This tick commonly infests homes, yards, and kennels, putting dogs and their human families at risk even in cities and towns. Drs. Foley and Lopez-Perez emphasize that veterinarians serve as crucial frontline defenders through early detection and treatment, potentially saving both canine and human lives.Time is the enemy with RMSF. Each 2-3 day delay in starting doxycycline treatment doubles or triples the risk of death. While case fatality rates vary dramatically between regions, Drs. Foley and Lopez-Perez attribute these differences primarily to healthcare access and speed of diagnosis rather than bacterial strain differences. Their international collaborations reveal how the same disease manifests differently across various ecological settings from Brazil to Mexico to the United States yet shares common challenges requiring coordinated One Health solutions. For veterinarians, the key takeaway is maintaining a high index of suspicion for RMSF in endemic areas, even when symptoms initially appear vague. Despite today's focus on antimicrobial stewardship, the hosts emphasize that appropriate doxycycline use for suspected RMSF represents good medicine given the disease's potential lethality. Through greater awareness, timely intervention, and collaborative approaches across medical disciplines, we can better protect both animal and human health from this serious emerging threat.Listen now to understand the evolving ecology of this disease, learn practical approaches to diagnosis and prevention, and discover how your veterinary practice can play a vital role in addressing this significant One Health challenge.AJVR article: https://doi.org/10.2460/ajvr.24.11.0368JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.24.11.0756INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ? Today I'm joined by a repeat guest Dr. Phil Zeltzman - a polymath and veterinary surgeon. He's joined me on episode #42 and #107. He is the co-founder of Chronos and SURGE. Chronos is a remote back-office solution for veterinary practices. SURGE is a community of “MOBILE SURGEONS HELPING MOBILE SURGEONS”. Phil always a pleasure to connect and I get to share that with the audience this time. Phil's bigger macro and micro views at where things stand today in veterinary medicine. "Pet spend on a real basis (accounting for inflation) is down 20 straight months - this is worse than the Great Financial Crisis which was 19 months." - Phil's thoughts and does it feel that bad in the marketplace today? We chat Chronos - Phil joined me in episode #107 to talk about it. You've been talking about “reactivation” a lot lately and wanted to have you share more about that. Phil is the co-founder of Surge - which is a group of mobile and some B&M locations around the country. I was able to come to a meeting back in 2023 and loved it. Share a bit about Surge and how your GP peers can leverage and utilize what Surge has to offer. Phil's questions for me sparked a fun conversation. And so much more!!Our Sponsors GuardianVets (be sure if you reach out to mention us for 50% off your first month) Granite Peak Associates
Brigitte Brisson, DMV, DVSc, DACVS from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph joined us on OsteoBites to introduce Magnetic Resonance guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound as a treatment modality for osteosarcoma and describe preliminary results in canine patients.High Intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive percutaneous thermal ablation technique that allows deep tissue treatment with precise control over the shape and location of energy deposition. It causes minimal collateral damage and can be used to treat primary and metastatic tumours. In addition to its role in tumour ablation, HIFU has attracted attention for its potential to stimulate the immune system and possibly mount a response against metastasis. In humans, HIFU has been used for ablation of a variety of soft tissue tumours and most recently, it has been used in bone applications, specifically for the treatment of osteoid osteoma (OO) lesions in pediatric patients. Other reported bone applications include bone metastasis and osteosarcoma.Dr. Brigitte Brisson is a professor of soft tissue surgery in the Department of Clinical Studies at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC). She graduated from the Faculté de Médecine Vétérinaire at the University of Montreal in 1996. She performed a small animal rotating internship at the OVC followed by a Surgery residency with concurrent Doctor of Veterinary Science (DVSc) in small animal surgery. She became board certified in small animal surgery (ACVS) in 2001 and has since been on faculty at the Ontario Veterinary College. She is an ACVS Founding Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery and a Founding Member of Veterinary Neurosurgical Society.

You wince as you hear your vet tell you that your 2 year-old German Shepherd has hip dysplasia. You did nothing to cause it. The special x-ray he just got told you he was born with excessive laxity in his hip joints. You thought he was a little lazy because he didn't always want to follow you up the stairs or jump into the car. Sometimes, the morning after a big hike, he didn't even want to get up to go outside and then laid down to eat his breakfast. At times, he would snap his head around when you gave him butt scratches, but you thought that was because it tickled. And no matter how much your daughter tried to get him to stand on his hind legs for a treat, he just wouldn't do it. It isn't that he is lazy; it's because his hips hurt! Even though his loosey-goosey hips could not be prevented, there is still plenty you can do to manage the onset and severity of hip joint arthritis that follows. And it's pretty simple stuff like weight management and strengthening! After listening to Michelle Powers, DVM, DACVS, CCRT, DACVSMR educate you about hip dysplasia, your worst fears will be allayed and you'll feel empowered. Hip dysplasia is not a death sentence, just an unfortunate and very common orthopedic condition that needs lifelong management. Your dog is an athlete. You ask him to perform feats of athleticism on a daily basis whether you realize it or not: jumping into the back of your SUV from a stance, sprinting across the field for a ball, hiking up that steep trail, or running beside you for your morning jog. And then there's the “squirrel's revenge!” Yes, your dog always sees that squirrel taunting them as you open the door and takes off like a shot, leaping over the stairs, only to come to a dead stop at the base of the tree. Can you imagine if you did this upon waking in the morning? You might think you'd injure your knee and that is exactly what happens to your best friend. He suddenly comes up lame in the hind leg. It doesn't get better so you take him to the vet and sure enough, he's torn his cranial cruciate ligament or CCL (ACL for us humans). Then you find out, it doesn't heal on its own so your vet recommends surgery! Believe it or not, this scenario plays out all the time because tearing the cranial cruciate ligament is THE most common orthopedic diagnosis seen by veterinary surgeons. Listen as we talk with Mary Ann Nieves, DVM, MS, DACVS, about everything cranial cruciate ligament:Anatomy of the dog's knee and why does slope matter? The function of the CCL and why it's so important? The complicated and multifactorial reasons that lead to CCL tears.Does this injury happens in all species, even our cat friends? Can we do anything to prevent these injuries?Surgery vs. conservative management: pros and cons. What is a TPLO, TTA, and lateral suture?Arthritis and chronic pain after a CCL tear, especially if no surgery is performed. What is the role of prehab and rehab for CCL injuries?Find Dr. Nieves at Blue Pearl Pet Hospital.DisclaimerThe contents of the PetAbilityTM podcast are for informational purposes only.
