The world of Biotechnology is critical to all of humanity. Professionals in this field need to keep up on the emergence of new techniques, equipment, and processes to continue to forge new pathways to innovations that lead to making a difference in the lives of others. In this episode of UMBC's Mic'd Up Podcast, we chat with a graduate of our M.P.S. in Biotechnology, Chidera Igbokwe '22."I would say that I learned that the industry that I'm in is so much bigger than just me. There is this emphasis on the fact that we're often making life changing medicines for people. And everything we do, makes a difference in someone else's life. So there's this focus on product quality, making sure that everything is documented in the correct way. Sometimes it can get tiring. But then I realize that the products we make go into people's bodies and actually do things in their bodies. I think that that puts things into perspective." - Chidera Igbokwe M.P.S. Adam Scott is one of the funniest screen presences of the past decade. But the road to becoming the sitcom stand-out we know and love was anything but an overnight success. ""I had friends in school who I graduated with who, from the very start, said 'oh, no, I don't want to do this or that.' Kind of turning their nose up at certain things,” Scott says. “And I was always of the mind of, 'I'm going to do anything and everything. I just want to get in front of the camera or get on stage and do anything.' And I did, for a long time."" In this episode of “In the Envelope,” Scott walks us through the highs and lows of his entire career, from early roles in movies like “Hellraiser: Bloodline,” to comedic breakouts “Party Down,” “Step Brothers,” and “Parks & Recreations,” all the way up to his dynamic dual-sided turn in Apple TV+'s “Severance.” Brought to you by UCLA's Professional Programs at the School of Theater, Film & Television. --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster are two of the biggest names in Broadway history, currently starring in one of the most beloved musicals ever, “The Music Man.” For the Tony nominated duo, keeping each performance fresh means ignoring their own icon status and focusing on the present. “Sometimes, it's easier to fall back on things you know work,” Jackman says. “It's a fine balance. At times you're like, 'ah, I don't know what's happening with this scene.' Then you find it, then you lose it. A clean energy transition is an essential part of combatting the climate crisis, and the clean energy revolution is already here. But it may not be happening at the speed that we need. In this episode, we'll delve into why we need a clean energy transition, why we're not seeing it at the scale that we need, what role the government plays, and how we can ensure that this transition is socially just (ie. fossil fuel workers and other people affected by the transition don't have the livelihoods taken away). Joining us to talk about the clean energy revolution is Dr. Timothy Johnson, Professor of the Practice of Energy and the Environment at Duke University, Associate Dean of Professional Programs, and Chair of the Energy & Environment Program. His research expertise lies in the intersection of energy system planning, design of the built environment, and natural resource management, with a particular interest in how we can leverage interactions among these areas to improve environmental quality and human health. Singer-songwriter-turned-award-winning actor Cassandra Monique Batie goes by Andra Day—a stage name inspired by one of her biggest influences, Billie Holiday. It feels meant to be, then, that Andra’s recent Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination are for her portrayal of the iconic musician in Hulu’s “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” adapted for the screen by Suzan-Lori Parks and directed by Lee Daniels. From singing and dancing as a child in San Diego to being discovered by Stevie Wonder and collaborating with Spike Lee and Common, the Grammy- and Daytime Emmy–nominated Andra has now joined the ranks of musical leading ladies with Academy Award nods for their feature film debuts (including Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, and Diana Ross—also as Billie Holiday in “Lady Sings the Blues”). “It is okay that feelings will come up,” she says to her fellow artists. “Show up anyway in the midst of those feelings.” Read more about “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” here: https://bit.ly/31SdhRN Stay tuned as always for handy audition tips from your Backstage casting insider! Gary talks with Mr. Bill Boozang, an Associate Dean of Graduate and Professional Programs at Emmanuel College in Massachusetts. Mr. Boozang offers a very comprehensive and thoughtful view of his career as an educator. He started teaching at a public high school, then a 2-year college, a 4-year college and finally at the graduate level in a University setting. These career chapters encompassed both public and private higher education institutions. He also went beyond the classroom to start ‘Learning Centers’; evening and graduate programs and ‘satellite campuses’ as part of his various roles. He never lost a passion for the classroom though; and views his role as an educator as helping students in ‘learning how to learn’ and setting high expectations for themselves and their educational achievements.

The era of technological disruption we're living in has really only just begun. In a day and age where access to education and information is easier than ever before, many institutions are struggling to create innovative programs that are relevant to the needs of today's market, not mention also attractive to today's highly-educated, debt-averse prospective graduate students. On today's episode of the Enrollify Podcast, we speak with Joanne Wang from Vanderbilt's School of Engineering about how Vanderbilt is designing and marketing brand new graduate programs like their Master's in Cyber Physical Systems (think “Alexa” and “the internet of things”) and their Master's in Risk, Reliability, and Resilience (think “engineering solutions and systems to respond more sustainably after a hurricane hits”!).
