Bom play! Today, we look at nutrition in one of the world's most promising yet challenging regions: Latin America. Our speakers explore food culture and production in Latin America, how regional poverty fosters food insecurity and hunger, and how these factors, in turn, impede economic and social development. But learning and teaching others about food, its nutritious make-up, supply chain and distribution cycles can be transformative. Joining us are Brazilian chef and social entrepreneur David Hertz, who founded Gastromotiva, the first socio-gastronomic business in Brazil promoting social inclusion; Pedro Padierna, ex-President of PepsiCo Latam and food advisor in Mexico; and Mayssa Al Midani, an Investment Manager in Pictet Asset Management's Thematic Equities team. The host is Luis Merino, a Private Banker at Pictet Wealth Management.
Make way for a new kind of entrepreneur, one that includes their own personal values on the balance sheet. We'll meet three innovators who are making a profit while helping to end hunger. Our journey with host and Global Head of Philanthropy at PepsiCo, C.D. Glin takes us to Brazil, Israel, and New York City. David Hertz of Gastromotiva has a startup that is breathing new life into the restaurant business. Then, we meet Eran Pollack of N-Drip, a revolutionary new irrigation technology that is improving crop yields. Finally, Lauren Bush Lauren of FEED explains how fashion can act as a vehicle to end hunger for school children around the globe. You can join us on this journey too, PepsiCo Food for Good will donate up to 1,000 meals per episode every time you share an episode on social media with the hashtag #journeytozerohunger. Nature-Based Systems ThinkingDavid and Laura Hertz — On Nature-Based Systems Thinking, on Resilient Communities through Design, on Their Award-Winning Atmospheric Water Sequestration Invention WEDEW, on the Democratization of Natural Resources, and on the Resilience Fund. ‘We live in a world of transitions between the fossil fuel and free world. There's no time to be apathetic and it's incredibly exciting to live in a time where investment being placed in incredible technologies that could help reverse the consequences we created. A world where we can see a distributed system and natural resources democratized. — David Hertz About David and Laura HertzDavid has been working at the edge of sustainability and the forefront of regenerative architecture for over 35 years. As a systems thinker, he engages a variety of fields through design and believes in expanding the conceptual limits of architecture.Throughout his career, David has connected the art of building with responsible stewardship of the Earth. A LEED accredited professional, he serves on the board of Heal The Bay and is a member of the City of Santa Monica's Task Force on the Environment. David taught sustainable design and mentored students at his alma mater, SCI-Arc, as well as Art Center College of Design and USC, and currently serves on the Academic Advisory Committee for UCLA's Extension Program. Laura is a storyteller, an environmentalist, a humanitarian, and a concerned citizen with the goal to educate and inspire to leave this planet a better place. A native Californian, Laura grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. She spent most of her childhood on the coast sailing. As a daughter of a commercial airline pilot and a wildly creative mother, Laura's lifelong passion for photography is the product of her traveling adventures around the world, discovering the visual beauty and intrigue of foreign lands, cultures, and customs. She worked as a Photojournalist for many publications and later as an Advertising and Lifestyle Photographer. In 2015, Laura and her husband David Hertz, co-founded Skysource, a social impact enterprise focused on creating deployable atmospheric water solutions that address all aspects of global water issues. She also serves on the board of The Bay Foundation, 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental group that restores and enhances The Santa Monica Bay through actions and partnerships that improve water quality, conserve and rehabilitate natural resources, and protect the Bay's benefits and values.. A lifelong passion for surfing has made David and Laura active in issues of water quality and access. ‘18% of Californian budget is pumping water across long distances – this is huge. Desalination plants and water movement are not the cleanest solutions. 0.22% of fresh water is contained in water vapor and we forget that there is 6 times more water vapor at any given time than there is in rivers and lakes. This happens to sit at the highest point of the water shed, and once extracted then cooled, water becomes extremely accessible and free.' says David Hertz.Together, David and Laura founded Skysource to democratize water, and their efforts culminated in winning the Water Abundance XPRIZE. Since then, they have focused on making communities more resilient through design. After the Woolsey Fire devastated their community, David has become committed to helping friends and neighbors rebuild their homes and lives. David is also the co-founder of Resilience Fund for Advancing Climate Technologies, focusing on water, food, energy, and carbon transformation technology solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Siga o Rodrigo Sardinha: @rodrigosardinha85 no Instagram Siga o Rodrigo Galvão: @openhouse.cast no Instagram
Though Laura-Doss Hertz & David Hertz, founders of Skysource.org, had their own individual paths to purpose through careers in advertising, photography & architecture, they both shared a passion for protecting water and the belief that it is human kind's most precious resource. This belief resulted in a life changing idea that fueled the innovation of the self-contained, sustainable energy-water generator called WEDEW to solve water scarcity. This also granted them the prestigious XPrize award in 2018.
David and Laura explain the Wedew machine - which brought them the million dollar grand prize for the XPRIZE contest. It produces water from the atmosphere and turns biomass into energy. And they also discuss their plans to lessen their footprint and live a life of sustainability.
This week we talk with David Hertz and Nicola Gryczka, the founders of the Social Gastronomy Movement. The conversation is a fascinating dialogue about where motivation comes from and the power and impact that one person can have when they engage with their community.

Welcome to the first official solocast of the Travel With Meaning podcast. I’ve been enjoying bringing you conversations with interesting guests sharing travel stories and don’t worry we have three more interviews coming up with David Hertz, Angela Sun and Richard Bangs to close out season one. As I promised in the intro episode I was going to share some of my travels throughout the year and how travel has always shown up for me when I needed it. Something else I shared in the intro episode was I lost my job the end of January and I was thinking travel was going to play a big part of my life for the next few months. This episode is some of my thoughts, experiences and meaningful moments from travels my travels over the first six months of 2019. I found doing the interviews so much easier. Which means I’m going to have to lean into being even more vulnerable on my next solocast. Hope you enjoy…see you on the open road! Mike Angela Sun David Hertz Richard Bangs
Learn about the fascinating new Skysource/WEDEW system that is able to draw fresh drinking water from the moisture in the air, created by David Hertz and his company FAIA and the Studio of Environmental Architecture. The Skysource/WEDEW system recently won the grand prize for Water Abundance with XPrize. In this interview, David explains how the WEDEW system works, and how it can be deployed to many areas around the world to supply fresh drinking water from the air. It can be used as an adjunct to current water municipalities, for disaster relief situations, and for people who don’t have access to clean fresh water where they live. Find out more at: skysource.org.
David Hertz is an architect and founder of Skysource the winner of Water Abundance X-Prize, was able to create water from air using 100% renewable energy sources, for under 2 cents per liter. They started with Skywater, which was able to take water out of the air, but it required humidity - what they won the prize for was WEDEW (wood-to-energy deployable emergency water), which is essentially a rainforest in a box.
